12:00 AM
But it's so easy!
you inform AD of your network structure
and it automagically optimizes certain things for it.

@MDMarra default-first-site-name
Makes me shudder

@MarkHenderson everywhere.

I, literally, haven't seen a single client have it set up correctly

this isn't so bad if you have only one site and like 20 workstations

AWS is one of the greatest tech shenanigans ever perpetuated against the American people

12:01 AM
hospitals, banks, insurance companies

but I've seen this kind of setup in companies of 15000 people

@MarkHenderson swag.default-first-site-name.internal

@WesleyDavid I'm totally guilty of .local

@MarkHenderson Me too ;_;

@WesleyDavid every time you create such a domain God kills a kitten.

12:02 AM
I haven't built a from-scratch domain since I got lectured by @MDMarra about it

I have a client migrating from corp.<example>.com to <child>.<example>.corp
I'm crying on the inside

@MDMarra Do it, take their money, then take their money again when it doesn't work

@MDMarra so many things wrong with that

We're only contracted for the migration not the AD design

for instance
domain migration itself is sketchy and should be avoided at all costs
is it even officially supported?
I don't think it is

12:03 AM
yeah
microsoft even makes a tool for it
ADMT

Huh.

it moves and translates group membership and even updates ACLs on moved computers/servers to reflect the new group SIDs

Every time I've seen it done it's been a 3rd party tool

Because Qwest stuff is easier to use than ADMT

@FalconMomot American Humane Society: Remember to spay and neuter your kittens. Or make a .local domain.

12:04 AM
And has a few more features
But ADMT, once you use it, is adequate for almost anyone
But still, the migration is because of an acquisition
So it makes sense, but still
.corp shudder
And they're doing the "empty forest root" thing. I hate that shit.

My preferred way of doing things when there is an acquisition is to try and nuke the smaller company's infrastructure as much as possible

hahaha

onboard all their employees like you just hired them, migrate applications, and nuke the AD.

Again, we're only being engaged for the migration. The rest has either been decided by their internal IT or some other shitty consultants

yeah...

12:06 AM
Doesn't make me judge them any less, though :)

@MDMarra empty forest root why?
ugh

"To protect the Schema"

yet another of these uninformed BCPs
lol!
nevermind that exchange requires changes to the root

If you have admins making unauthorized schema changes, you shouldnt have hired them

Ok AD experts. What is the purpose of setting an 'SMTP' bridgehead in sites and services? IS SMTP every actually used for intra/inter site replication?
As far as I know I have never actually seen it on the wire.

12:08 AM
SMTP?!
no, it isn't used for replication

@Zoredache If you have a 5600 baud soup can connection to a remote yacht
It doesn't actually even replicate all attributes if you use SMTP site links

@FalconMomot it is an option on the server prefs under sites and services.

I forget what it leaves out, because no one on the planet uses it

so it is.
Hmm, actually, this could be a really big security hole

@Zoredache essentially it's for links that have latency so high that RPC will fail, since SMTP is more resiliant to that condition.
@FalconMomot I believe it only works when you have a valid client-auth PKI solution in place.
But again, no one uses it so I don't remember the specifics

12:10 AM
it is true
according to the docs I am reading

Mission Accomplished. Rocked another interview.

nice dude

@Adrian ...aaaaand no callback for two weeks.

Argh, from a job posting I just got emailed: Please demonstrate your Microsoft Active Directory Management (account/group/calendar) management
because everyone stores calendars in AD

Mac users, how can I stop filevault from prompting me for a password twice when my laptop wakes from hibernate. Docs say it shouldn't...yet it does.
waking from sleep is one prompt, hibernate is two

12:12 AM
@MDMarra did you change your password at some point in time?

Negative
I had it disabled for a while but I just turned it back on yesterday
it happened when I first had it on, and it's happening again

No, I'll hear by Thursday. Theyre stand up folks.

I know I have seen people here have that happen when they have changed their passwords. The mac expert told me something like you had to go tweak things in the keychain.

hm
I assume the first one unlocks the actual volume to resume from hibernate and the second on is the normal logon because the computer sleeps for x minutes before hibernate which locks the screen
So, I get why but I can't figure out how to make that not happen, since the docs make it sound like it shouldnt

@MDMarra Right, but by default your filevault password is the same as your login password. So once you type your login password, it is automatically cached and handed off to apps that request it.

12:15 AM
yeah

ahhh satisfying, got my metrics all up and running across the servers

That's what's not happening :(

If your filevault password is different, there is a way to save it to the keychain, which may be what you want
But I haven't used a mac in a couple years so I can't help much.

nah, it's the same password
The worst part about digging for problems about stuff like this, is that you get hundreds of retards on macrumors that have no clue
You get dumber by searching for an answer

@MDMarra uuuuuuuuugghhhhhhhh apple.stackexchange is just as bad
If you ask a real question about a real problem they go all gaga on you

12:18 AM
yup

Q: iMac consistently losing all bluetooth connectivity

Mark HendersonI have a Late 2011 27" iMac that once a day loses all bluetooth connectivity. (Very rarely it will drop just the keyboard or just the mouse, but 99% of the time, it's everything) This is a huge problem because I only have the iMac bluetooth keyboard and mouse, so this basically renders the entire...

Q: iOS6 has loaded someone totally different's details

Mark HendersonI did an Over The Air update on my iPhone 4S this morning to IOS6. But it has showed me someone elses phone number after the update. When I send an iMessage to my wife, it comes from this random persons phone number. When I try to facetime, it comes from this other number. But "Phone" shows the ...

Neither of them with acceptable answers
fwiw neither of them are actually problems any more, the bluetooth one was fixed with the last (paid) service pack for OSX and the phone one went away on its own after a few days

A: How much will adding an extra hard drive to my MacBook Pro affect battery performance?

MDMarraHaving a second hard drive will certainly decrease battery life by a noticeable amount. Behind the CPU and LCD, the hard drive is the largest drain on battery. A word of caution: RAID 0 is almost never a good idea, unless you'll be doing backups constantly and don't mind being totally down if a ...

so many of my comments got moderated there
but what's left is still a clusterfuck of misinformation

@MDMarra isn't it annoying when people ask for a source for what you consider a common sense answer

It's worse when their source is a PSU vendor's power consumption numbers for 5 year old desktop components when you're talking about notebook parts

@MDMarra What up, fool?

12:23 AM
@ewwhite Nothing, just trying to make filevault less annoying

Yeah, I don't use that.

@MDMarra yeah, seriously... that was completely not relevant lol

@ewwhite You're black, don't you need extra protection from search and seizure in Chi?!

@MDMarra No, the police don't get involved here.

hahahaha
You can't be compelled to produce an encryption key or password!
I'm more concerned about it getting stolen and my identity getting jacked, but either way

12:26 AM
@MarkM: Be nice or you will be banned. Please save the rants for other forums that are more accepting of that type of behavior. — Philip Regan Oct 17 '11 at 20:45

It's okay. All of my important information is in the cloud

@MarkHenderson yeah, what a loser right?
@ewwhite Did you know the federal government can get any email from any citizen without a warrant after 180 days or after you've opened it
I'm not talking about prism either

@MDMarra how would they get it?

@MDMarra maaan, I read through the comments on that... are all apple users that retarded?

It's some legal bullshit where they can get a subpoena for it and dont need a warrant, just because you've already read it
@ewwhite subpoena, no warrant necessary

12:27 AM
wait... that was dumb question, I said apple user :p

@MDMarra Who would they get it from?

google, facebook, etc

ewwhite.net ?

haha
they could subpoena you directly for it
but i guess it wouldnt be a secret any more ha

Ooops, I ran my mail on a Supermicro server... All-gone.

12:28 AM
Dear Mr. Marra,

As I work to address the needs and concerns of American families and businesses across the 13th Congressional District, it is important that I hear your views. I want you to know that I always take your views into consideration as I work to make the right decisions to revitalize our economy, invest in our future and meet our obligations. I appreciate you taking the time to contact my office regarding the National Security Agency's activities.

The United States government has a responsibility to ensure our nation's security while respecting the constitutional rights of all
My rep accidentally(?) revealed that in a reply to an email that I sent her about how PRISM was shitty and they should end the secret FISA courts, or at least make the rulings public

ooooh

> Currently, certain federal agencies can use an administrative subpoena to compel service providers like Google or Facebook to disclose emails that have been opened or are older than 180 days.

Deep.

moral of the story "don't open your email"

thats scary

12:41 AM
@MDMarra That's why I use Wickr for erry'thing.

So a couple days ago, I watched what has to be my favorite TechEd 2013 video. I very highly encourage you take an hour and watch it too - but only after you've read this post!  This video finally inspired me to take care of a problem that had been bugging me (no pun intended) on my own Windows machine for several weeks. On my Windows 7 work laptop, I use Outlook for my work emai

been watching gangland...
daaamn

@MDMarra Yeah, I think the court ruling that's based on used logic along the lines of "if someone throws away an opened letter, it doesn't require a warrant to snag it from their trash can on the curb"
Which has so many things wrong with it. Like the whole premise.

@ShaneMadden I've heard before that there's an argument that if you let a third party hold your mail, you have no expectation of privacy since a third party is involved
Also sketchy

@MDMarra That's why I run my own email

What the hell are you all you people hiding that you're so scared of someone else reading your emails?

Nothing
I'm sure you've heard of a "slippery slope," though, right?
Privacy (though not explicitly spelled out) is protected by the Constitution. And US citizens are protected from unlawful and unreasonable search and seizure by gov't agents as well.
So, unless there's an amendment that changes that, a lot of people here expect that...you know...those laws are followed

@MDMarra You Americans and your constitution. 99.999% of Australians probably aren't even aware we have a constitution

1:12 AM
99.999% of your population are kangaroos

You're BOTH right

@JoelESalas We weren't arguing?
I'm just trying to understand

@MarkHenderson Yeah, Americans enshrine the constitution more than they should. Some to a ridiculous degree. But the concern, in general, is less "I don't want you reading my email", and more "why do you think you need to be reading my email?"

@ShaneMadden Amurka

1:35 AM
wtf is the easter egg room

so you can test stuff
like
rm -rf /

@MarkHenderson that's why The Castle should be required viewing in school.

still don't get it. I type ls, nothing happens

@ShaneMadden: or as I say it, I have nothing to hide. You better have a perfectly good reason why you want to know this ;p

@Andrew The "vibe" of it

1:39 AM
Hi. Is there a problem with the reputation attribution system? I got an answer upvoted and accepted yesterday and it shows a 0 next to them
but the system still cut points for downvoted answer...

@RyanRies If you require a more functional easter egg, go here and type "insert coin". You'll need to click the fly-by, but after that... have fun.

@jscott Thanks now I just feel like I dropped acid

@JScoobyCed This is the chat for ServerFault. You may want to check StackOverflow's chat

If this game were multiplayer it would be amazing

@jscott: only happens on serverfault

1:42 AM
@RyanRies also javascript:var%20s%20=%20document.createElement('script');s.type='text/javascrip‌t';document.body.appendChild(s);s.src='http://erkie.github.com/asteroids.min.js';‌void(0);
(bookmarklet for in-browser asteroids)

@jscott: I am a long-time user of stackoverflow and never had issues. Started yesterday on serverfault and got downvoted (-2) but no point for my answer... feels like not coming back here :S

@JScoobyCed Sorry, we are a crotchety lot

@Ryan: yeah I see that :D

eheh. that explains everythhing.
Though I'd like to say. we have a very special site culture

anyway... i'll check later...

1:47 AM
@JScoobyCed The question you answered was Community Wiki
Which is a retired feature of the site because people did dumb shit like flagging it when they weren't meant to
But the side effect is, no points for CW questions
I've removed the CW status and you should have your points soon
(after the next recalc, I dont know how often that is)

Go to serverfault.com/reputation and click "Trigger reputation recalc" -- that is if those parts are still all wired up. :)

@WesleyDavid Were you searching google images for "bofh logo" as well today?

@jscott No. I took a selfie in the mirror.

1:55 AM
@WesleyDavid I need that as a poster at work

@WesleyDavid Ha! I mean I saw that very image in a search today.

@jscott You took a picture of me when I wasn't looking? Creeper.

People often use Falcon metaphors involving prey when talking about putting me on some client.
though I think that thing is a hawk, but still.

@FalconMomot Is that your actual birth name? I'm curious...

This is one of the best tech articles I've read in a long time

1:58 AM
@WesleyDavid yes. people ask me that a lot too.

Q: Linux md RAID does not see USB drives at assemble time

Peter SahlstromI'm running a software RAID-1 on Debian 6.0 that consists of two internal ATA drives and two USB hard drives. Everything works fine until I reboot - then, only the internal ATA drives are added to the RAID. Once the boot completes, I'm able to add the USB drives just fine with: /sbin/mdadm --man...

@FalconMomot I figured it was a question you get a lot. I just started to think that maybe it wasn't a nickname after all. =)

@FalconMomot USB is not a production storage system!

Totally isn't.
@Andrew certainly not for putting in RAID arrays, anyway
fermez-la.

@FalconMomot ...aaaaand I totally creeped all over you and added you on G+ and LinkedIn.

Public Service Announcement: It's only creepy if you're unattractive.

I'm curious if SF will help this person or downvote them into the ether:

Q: had a CISCO 2960S dropped in my lap - how to setup the management interface?

paul lanken[ note - this was moved over from StackOverFlow where it was very offtopic ] Few tasks in the world are more of a joy than to have a chunk of hardware dropped into ones lap with a post-it note that says "configure this for that new subnet". I know my way around Linux/UNIX but have never had to ...

@jscott Well with an intro like that how can I not downvote him?

@WesleyDavid: I dragged @FalconMomot here, and I don't remember his birth name either ;p

@jscott long question is long
@JourneymanGeek it's the same as it is now......

2:03 AM
@FalconMomot Cropping out the show output, it almost fits on my screen.

@WesleyDavid Seriously? I want to give the guy a hug and say "It's all going to be OK..."

@MarkHenderson +1

@MarkHenderson: then downvote him on principle?

@FalconMomot was not born, but was cultivated in a Tim Horton's warehouse from a host body consisting of discarded Twinkie wrappers and beef au jus slag.

2:04 AM
waves a Canadian flag

if it was a tom horton's warehouse wouldn't he be made out of doughnut holes?

no... they sell those

only the ones unsuitable for use in creating host bodies.

@FalconMomot Want. =(
Can you ship those without getting in trouble?

2:06 AM
@WesleyDavid let me go outside, walk around my building, and pick some up...
also, I wonder? probably, but they'd be stale.

Overnight shipping! Are they worth it?

@FalconMomot: at some point of time I learnt that my old school anthem was ruthlessly perloined from the lyrics and tune of the maple leaf

@JourneymanGeek Ha! That is awesome.

and I mean, they barely changed the lyrics

@WesleyDavid when they used to be made fresh, before the chain was bought by wendy's, yes.

2:08 AM
(look up "The ACS school anthem lyrics"

@FalconMomot Tim's is owned by Wendy's?!

Wendy's ruins everything they touch.

@WesleyDavid Alas, yes.

@RyanRies Show me on the dolly where Wendy touched you.

@WesleyDavid In the boneless, skinless chicken breast :(

2:10 AM
wait, I have been living under a rock. it got spun off.
@JourneymanGeek you're right, the lyrics are almost original. That makes a really awkward school anthem.

NEVER TALK BAD ABOUT WENDY OR DAVE WILL KILL YOU WITH A SPATULA. SIDEWAYS.
@FalconMomot Man I always forget how big Calgary is. Do you live close to downtown? That's a big place.

@FalconMomot: I was almost shocked ;p

But seriously, they used to have a chicken breast sandwich that had an actual piece of real chicken in it. They've since "enhanced" the sandwich to have a processed, re-formed piece of "protein" in it. And they used to have great fries. Then they "enhanced" them by no longer peeling the potato skins off of them. No one wants that. And we all know what the "chili" is. Let's not even speak of that. Wendy's sucks.

@WesleyDavid nowhere near. I'm on the very northeast tip of the city, but by transit I can get downtown in like half an hour.

@FalconMomot Oh wow, so you're actually not too far from Airdrie?

2:15 AM
Yeah, it's super close to here
it'll probably get annexed within a decade

@FalconMomot Well if you ever make it to sunny Phoenix, we'll go egg a Wendy's in Tim's honor.

yay, almost caught up with continuum

There's a Wendy's within just a few minutes walking form me.

we have an odd tradition in this province of never building metropoli, and instead allowing cities to grow forever and annex their neighbours.

2:16 AM
@WesleyDavid For sure. I spend very little time there, but I might actually be around there sometime within the year for non-professional reasons

@FalconMomot: thats exactly how my former employer operates

@FalconMomot Bring some shades.

@WesleyDavid Probably should. I don't go outside much...

It's only 103 right now. Summer hasn't cranked up yet.

I actually work from home and sometimes don't leave my place for like a week.
I don't think it's ever been that hot here.

2:19 AM
Record high temp in Calgary: 97.0F.
Bah! There will be a period of about eight to ten weeks where at no point does the air temperature go below 90F here.
Overnight lows in the low 90s and daytime temps in the 110s.
@RyanRies ...what is the chili?

... that actually sounds awesome
being able to go out in the rain and not shiver.

@FalconMomot Yeah, surprisingly we get some rain storms here. About 14" a year, and it's all in the late summer during Monsoon season. Some in the early spring.
People around here put on sweatjackets and freeze when it's 50F in the evenings in Winter.

I'd wear a sweatjacket in that weather too, if there was any wind.
but, I'm all bones.

@MarkHenderson Thank you, I'll wait the recalc. If that makes sense to keep it a CW, I don't mind the reputation. Didn't expect this :)

fail.

2:25 AM
@WesleyDavid It's the detritus scraped off the grill during the day... week... month... with chili sauce added! ;)

@RyanRies Gotta be resourceful in these times.

@jscott yes the serverfault.com/reputation triggers the recalc... but things aren't wired up in the profile page reputation tab :D

I thought recalcs weren't a thing anymore?

paul lankenFew tasks in the world are more of a joy than to have a chunk of hardware dropped into ones lap with a post-it note that says "configure this for that new subnet". I know my way around Linux/UNIX but have never had to deal with a CISCO router, ever. So I have been given an old CISCO 2960S chunk ...

@JScoobyCed It takes a bit for everything to jibe. Hang tight. It'll happen.

2:37 AM
Answered. I think I'm right, though I've not configured anything cisco in forever.

@FalconMomot I've only messed with ProCurve. Not the best resume fodder. =/
Been in Procurve shops all my career, and then just went with what I knew and implemented it wherever I went after that.

@WesleyDavid that's unusual.
Cisco people are kind of a dime a dozen though
and cisco is seriously losing out to juniper these days

I'd totally go Juniper, but never have the budget.

@ShaneMadden I dunno, there's still recalcs done but they're not required to undo things
Rep is still denormalised I believe

juniper is awesome
and they're paying a lot of attention to security lately.
Arg, car alarms outside my window for the past 10 minutes straight
there should be a law whereby I'm allowed to go smash in all his windows with my skateboard.

2:55 AM
evenin' gents.

@FalconMomot Yeah bcause that will stop car alarms from going off

It would enable me to then pop the hood and steal the battery.
while having the pleasant side effect of discouraging the installation of the damn things.

@MarkHenderson I can pop over there and idle my VFR next to his car. The bike will drown out the alarm and the alarm will drain his battery. Problem solved.

aha! I can actually call the bylaw officers on him! Off to see where the damn thing is at.
(a punk calling out bylaw enforcement. I think I'm getting old)

Anyone use Veeam for VM backups? I'm needing to build a Linux server for the storage target

3:05 AM
@Andrew Yep
Its pretty easy to set up an NFS target
And Veeam itself acts as an NFS location for vSphere. It's pretty cool. It adds an NFS datastore that has just the VM you want to recover. You can then either start it and get what you want, or storage vmotion it elsewhere

@MarkHenderson do I just add stuff to /etc/exports? I've never configured it myself, only had it auto-configured by other software installs

@Andrew Oh, I have no idea about that part
I only know the veeam side
We back up to a NAS that took care of all that shit for us

is webmin the cpanel of server admin?

3:20 AM
@Andrew pretty much
also, good god, burn it with fire

@MarkHenderson guessing that a lot of the config is explained in man pages, I'll RTFM

3:37 AM
another subjective question: XFS used to be recommended for "big files"/"high performance" over EXT2/3. What about EXT4?
(also online defrag etc. considerations)

3:47 AM
@Andrew I regularly vote to close questions that are webmin only. And I definitely VtC those questions where the owner whines that they only know webmin and want to do it through the webmin interface.
@mdmarra Is this for real? I didn't think LMHOSTS would be applicable in the modern era? serverfault.com/a/516831/73435

@Adrian so... canonical question / FAQ / whatever for "Q: I'm trying to do (on-topic) thing with (bad solution), HALP"; "A: Use (proper solution)"?

@Andrew A little too general for a Canonical question. =)

sigh, chicken and egg project :/

2 hours later…
5:49 AM
Fascinating: container ship breaks in two (which is somewhat unusual), but the two parts didn't sink! They're floating separately, 15 miles apart at one point:

@Ward Thats a lot of cargo to be going to the bottom of the ocean
Someone's priceless supercar was probably in one of those containers

6:01 AM
@MarkHenderson You lost a Bentley didn't you.

morning

@Ward your bragging must have been so transparent I missed it

@WesleyDavid Unlikely I'd buy a Bentley until I'm at least 50

I just put a down-payment on one...

@ewwhite On a Continental?

6:13 AM
(psssh... not really)

(please be an Anarge...)

but I see them often here in Chicago.
and I wonder... why?

@ewwhite Because money
Gotta spend it on something

I suppose that's true.
but none of us will get rich doing this...strange to think that those levels of income are possible.
but I think the same when I see people renting $15k/mo. apartments in NY.

@ewwhite Exactly. Unless you run your own big business we will never have these things
And I'm OK with that

6:23 AM
As am I, but I do wonder if I'm doing it wrong.
I have a pretty good hustle going... but even then, there are many tiers above what I can achieve.
illustrates how bad income inequality in the US really is.

@ewwhite do you have a minimum salary regulation in the US?

It's state-by-state. Here, it's $8.25/hr.
which puts you below the poverty-level.

at a 40hours/week average that makes ~1300$ a month if my math doesn't fail me

A little rough.
I don't know how people do it.

6:40 AM
@ewwhite the minimum salary here is [645.30€](http://www.empleo.gob.es/es/Guia/pdfs/pdfsnuev/RD171712.pdf), see Art 1, regardless you can read spanish; how is that for poverty level?

@dawud low... but some of the social services burdens may be gone... Health insurance and healthcare are big issues here

@Iain He was bragging about being around a bunch of cute girls. I suspected he was referring to his wife and daughters. I was right. =)

Ha! - it was so transparent I didn't see it :)

@Iain Early bird.

6:56 AM
@WesleyDavid as usual I've been about for ages, start early, finish early - enjoy the long evenings

@Iain I'm getting that way, but I am naturally a night owl, and live with people who are very much so. It's hard to get to sleep before 1AM. =/
I get up at 7-ish as a rule, even if I'm tired. I find the forced schedule makes my head clearer.
I'd strongly consider becoming a 10PM-5AM sleeper if I could get some co-operation.
@Iain What time do you get up as a rule?

I'm usually awake by 6:10
last night I was asleep late but by 11:30

@StackExchange sigh Can we pleeeeease remove XKCD from the blog roll?

Morning

@ewwhite healthcare is becoming a problem here too, as private corporations take over the public system
on other news, we finally got rid of the old Alteon and now we are using brand new F5

7:56 AM
@StackExchange There is nothing new under the sun.
gargh. Server rails that won't unclip and the servers weigh... lots.
tomorrow!
