Well, in real life it's the third-least common naturally occurring element on Earth (after Osmium and Rhodium). I'd expect to find about one ore-bearing block every 150 thousand chunks (6250x6250 blocks area fully mined out) or so ...

@Jochem Minecraft currently only supports equal distribution. Which is too bad, proper alluvial deposits would not only be a good place to look for minerals, they also tend to be the more interesting formations after some erosion has taken place.

it's fun, though very much still in development

You can build rockets, go to other planets, build rovers... but that's about it, the unmodded game has no way of doing things beyond that. You can equip a ship with an antenna and scientific gear, but there's no way to use the info you gather

you can build space stations and moonbases though if you want

and there is (apparently, haven't gotten into it yet) an insane modding community which adds a lot of stuff to do. There's a mod that lets you create topographical maps of objects in the Kerbal solar system, there's mods that add communication ranges and missions and everything

the plain game only has a sandbox mode, there is no campaign yet.

@MartinSojka I just wish it would give you more statistics. In the builder, it would be nice if your ship would give you an estimation of delta-V per stage. In orbit, it would be nice if at least Ap and Pe would show up somewhere in the map HUD

as a beginner, I have a lot of trouble figuring out how much fuel to take, and generally take too much, creating giant unstable monstrosities of rockets

I get none on my server, My flux is high enough though, I got random lightning to the face already. And I regularly hear it crashing down on some unsuspecting mob.
