I did not remember your name, but I remember your eagle icon

Love you too!

@didxga Um, you must be confusing me with some other bird.
I can't take credit for answers that are not mine. I have merely edited one question of yours.

A: Why should the first person pronoun 'I' always be capitalized?

CerberusThe pronoun I began to be 'capitalized' around the middle of the 13th century. But this was not true capitalization. Note that it was long before the printing press: all texts were in manuscript. Before the 11th century, the letter i was normally just a short vertical line, without a dot. The j ...

Haha, what, am I an eagle now too?

hehe. yes. thanks anyway

When you think you've heard it all...
It was a pleasure!

I always blush when I speak in public.

3:08 PM

Nope I'm not.
So does noöne have an opinion on I could probably continue going through the motions?

@Cerberus oh, ok, cool, then Are you in Facebook

Herr Eule, es wär vielleicht besser wir sprächen auf Deutsch?

Aber mindestens!

sheila is now on facebook, its correct

Aber ich fürchte das mein letzer Satz war nicht korrekt...

Und "noch jener"... Ich verstehe, was Du meinst, aber ich bin auch der einzige.

Das stimmt, ich denke Deutsch und tuerkisch ähnlich sind

@Boob: Ja? Also Zimmer klingt lustiger!

Aber wie meinst du das
@Cerberus aber nicht wie du

@RegDwight I have no idea what you just said :p

3:23 PM
Actually, it's neither Zimmer nor Raum. It's Chatroom.

Englischraum?

@RegDwight Ich wollte sagen, for now... aber vielleicht meinst du daß das schon eher stattgefunden hat...

@MrDisappointment I was quoting Cerberus, and I have no idea what he meant by that, either.

i think room name should be "languages learning"

@Cerberus fürs Erste, vorerst, einstweilen.

3:25 PM
Ich weiß aber oft selber auch nicht was ich sagen will!
@RegDwight Ach ja, Danke!

@Cerberus gern geschehen

Ach ja,danke!

@Miss Some might argue for 'where languages learn you', but it's a long shot.

gern geschehen

@Miss Bye?

3:25 PM

L'Allemand, c'est trop difficile.

3:29 PM
/tschuess miss

3D Gain?

@regdwight? whats mean by that

As in, gain higher volume?

Is that like a pill or something?

@Cerberus Again, 2ndGain, 3dGain

3:29 PM
Click here to 3D Gain inches quick.

@Miss, you are also programmer?

Again, 2gains ..?

just see your profile at stackoverflow

@didxga I am I am

@Boob Hey it was Mr D's word...

3:30 PM
@Cerberus As in I don't know, it was just a feature I seem to recall alongside a Dolby Surround button, or something

@didxga but my programing sex is little weak..:(

My word?

Hmm... what did it do?

@Cerberus How you dare, it's originaly my word

3 mins ago, by Boob
Bye, 3dgain

3:32 PM
Oops, my apologies to you both.

@Cerberus O.K , I forgive you

@Cerberus Again, I'm unsure, but I would assume it was an enhancement of sorts... not sure that helps subdue the allusions to private parts any.

@Miss, programming is your hobby or profession

Hah to be honest I didn't even catch that allusion.

@didxga now its hobby and profession both

3:33 PM
I only know that gain is often used with volume.
Measured in decibels.

@Cerberus That would be my thought.

Nice, so am I

But how any three-dimensional aspect would help increased volume... oh well.

@didxga, what do you mean by "so am I" .

@Miss He is miss , too
tiree

3:35 PM
but really to be very frank, my programing sex to weak...

@Miss, programming is my hobby and profession too

@Miss Are you horny?

@boob: no

You insist on saying that, sounds weird

ahh how and why

3:37 PM
"just like that"

sex mean skill here

yes i agree with @didxga

@Boob That's what she said?

@MrDisappointment What?

Precisely. It was more inquisitive than anything else.

3:39 PM
@MrDisappointment You are agree with me, O.K

Well, that's a little stretch of the imagination - I hardly agree with anyone.

i think @didxga understand my word "sex" .. and you people make me him

@MrDisappointment Haha. Cultural references: 1, pineapples: 0.

@MrDisappointment You earned a reputation for open-mindedness

So should I ask this as an actual question:

3:41 PM
@MrDisappointment I'm not anyone

I could probably continue going through the motions...
I read this and it struck me as slightly odd.

@RegDwight I should think so, too. ;p
@Boob I don't know about that, on either point.

@Cerberus Have you seen 'The Notebook'?

Nope?

I should probably stop chatting and shopping for metronomes, though, and get this frickin' products page done and dusted - I know that.

3:44 PM
Work sucks...

ok @didga .. see yu bye , i would like to leave from here .. beu

What?

Leaving again so soon?

Was, bitte?

@MrDisappointment Hey now. There's no reason to stop shopping for metronomes. Ever.

3:45 PM
@Miss Bye :)

@Boob Das war kein Deutsch.

@RegDwight aber du kannst einfach meine Frage antworten

Welche denn?

@RegDwight I wholeheartedly agree. I regret that the MD behind me might require more substantiated reasoning. :(

@RegDwight "The Notebook" Film

3:49 PM
@Boob No, haven't seen that one.

@RegDwight "Have you seen " has an idiomatic meaning by the way, means you HAVE to see it

@RegDwight Bye, man, see you later.

Q: Housekeeping App — does it make sense?

Phil PeterWe are providing an app which manages your finances — like a housekeeping book. Our space is limited; therefore, we want to use the slogan "Housekeeping App". Would an English speaker know what is meant by that?

Q: Is Python a snake or a programming language? If the latter, why is it choking my dog?

RobustoWe've been getting a rash of questions asking, essentially, what a programmer should name methods or properties. One such was a request for a word that meant both "add" and "remove" because the programmer wanted to have a method that could add or remove an element. Does this really fall under E...

Here is a good borderline example; is the Housekeeping App question on or off topic?

Q: Should I changed the structure of a sentence/add filler words to make sure that the sentence always starts with a capital letter?

JobHere is a quote from a book on C++ ("for", "while" and "do" are keywords in many languages, and in most languages they have to be in lower case. The C++ language is one of those.): Simply put, algorithm names suggest what they do. "for", "while", and "do" don't. One cannot write "For" inste...

good question, but i voted to move to writers.se

@JSBangs I agree and voted same.

@MrHen it's definitely borderline. as such, i think that it should stay
i prefer to err on the side of inclusion

I could see the capitalization question belonging here but it seems like a much better fit for Writers
@JSBangs I voted for "Too Narrow" but mostly just to encourage discussion. It feels like a tie for me.

What happened to that ISBN question ?

4:33 PM
@Boob Which question?

I saw a question about ISBN there but cannot find it now , plus hej

Q: A few questions about ISBNs

PaulThis post is probably only tangentially related to the subject of the board (English language and usage), but I don't know where else to place it. I'm looking for some details regarding ISBNs. Are ISBN codes (International Standard Book Number) used for anything other than books? Maybe diploma...

That?

exactly, thanks

Oh God, are we like famous now? Quick, comb your hair!

@RegDwight not just yet. the day we get a plug on Language Log will be the day to comb your hair

The day Pullum signs up I will put a big huge fat-ass "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" on my profile and retire.

I'm clapping for you

6:01 PM
Let me know when i can stop it
hmmm, I'm more important now

@RegDwight you still there? I got another one of my opinion questions for you
0
A: He's good people. Just him. The one guy.

Rafael BeraldoAs for the grammaticality of this phrase, in Portuguese we have an expression that is exactly a translation of “good people”, “gente boa”. It is pretty common in the informal register of the state of São Paulo. Unfortunately, as far as I know, there are no ngrams for Portuguese, so I can’t say f...

Check the comments on that answer. I don't really want to drag that conversation out...
Am I off base?

Nope, at least i don't think so .. if you wanna know my opinion

@Boob All opinions welcome. ;) I just ask Reg because he is a Mod and he was just here... but now is gone.

I'm victim of that wink there ..

Victim, eh?

6:11 PM

It's not vitally important

I voted to close this because the asker is looking for a very specific word that was used somewhere once. Without a better description of what is happening here I consider this far Too Narrow to be of any use

7:04 PM
I also voted to close.

@MrHen Boot-licking has some negative meanings?
Anyway, I've deleted my post cause it was not so related there
new answer is worse than mine by the way

"There is not a parallel of latitude but would have been the equator if it had its rights."
Actually, let's get this right:
"There isn't a parallel of latitude but thinks it would have been the equator if it had had its rights." — Mark Twain

@Boob What?

@MrHen Professor boot-licking
or bringing apple
is that correct?

Does anybody else see letters instead of squares in my profile?

7:32 PM
I can't see

I see squares and letters.

OK, that's odd, because those insular letters are part of the Unicode standard

@Vitaly I see squares. The page does not match your picture.

Thx guys.

I recognize the quote, though. Beowful, yeah?

7:34 PM
yeah

@RegDwight: Who the hell is Pullum and why should we care? Except that you can move on to full-time LEGO.

Gotta go, DWYL .. night all

@Vitaly part of the standard does not imply widely-supported, alas

@Vitaly — Well, @RegDwight might sooner get to be Kate Middleton's first Russky. I'm just saying.
Looks like a Kosmonaut's space capsule just came back to earth.

7:45 PM
I was traveling.

That's what Kosmonauts do. Or so I'm told.

Indeed.

7:57 PM
@Robusto What kind of background do you have to recognize Beowulf in its original text, but misspell it?

@SpareOom — To answer your second question first, I made a typo. To answer your first question second, I had to translate Beowulf when I was an undergraduate in college.

@SpareOom I would imagine he needs a strong background in Anglo-Saxon literature to do that.

It was the second semester of Old English.

The ability to recognize text from Beowulf and the ability to mistype a word are actually very different skillsets.

I excel at both, fortunately.
I mean foturnaely.

8:08 PM
lol

I still have my big Anglo-Saxon dictionary, though. And my English Historical Documents including the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Heady stuff.

I have a collection of horror stories. Eerie stuff.

I took only one class in which we read Beowulf, but it had been translated into modern English.

I have a collection of guns. Army stuff.
I have a collection of FIFA paraphernalia. Footie stuff.

I have a collection of bobble-head dolls. Heady stuff.

8:12 PM
I have a collection of spoons. Touristy stuff.

Actually that was a lie. I don't have a collection of bobble-head dolls.
I don't really have a collection of anything, at least nothing that could be called a collection. Random stuff does not a collection make.

I have a collection of books. Literary stuff.

A collection of Soviets has you. Stuffy Soviets.

Fine, mock me.

Has this room a collection of stuffy Soviets?

8:15 PM
Hey, mine were just superficially connected to what you said. No actual mocking there.
I just find the word heady amusing in general.

Aw, I wanted to collect more mocking.
@Robusto Excuse me for being nosy.

@Kosmonaut — As it was intended to be.

@Robusto I just had cardiac surgery. Hearty stuff.

I just got treated for carpal-tunnel syndrome. Handy stuff.

I made some bread yesterday. Kneady stuff.

I've got a cold. Stuffy stuff.

I have on-demand dyslexia. Ready stuff.

Q: Difference between "OK" and "okay"

DalexLWhile typing a post on SO, I noticed that the word "ok" (when used in the sentence "I'm still learning so it is ok") was marked as misspelled (got to love spellcheck!) The first suggestion, however, confused me. The suggestion was "OK" (as apposed to "ok"). Then I thought, what about "okay"? So,...

What are you people doing?

Haha.
We're involved in some heady stuff here.

Playing with words.
We're being wordy, or a little punny.
Rather, they're succeeding, I'm trying.

You're trying my patience.

I see.
@MARTHA! Help.

8:51 PM
Mwahaha.

Why do gods never appear when you need them...

Gaudy stuff.

Innit, though.
Or however you spell that.

@MrHen I guess it's not a dupe. It's similar but not quite the same, IMO.

@Kosmonaut Which part is left unanswered?

8:54 PM
Well, maybe you're right.

@Cerberus — So ... @Martha is the god of thwack?

@Kosmonaut I "answered" it which should explain why I think it is a dupe.
;)
@Robusto God or goddess? Is Martha a gender-neutral god?

We don't have gender in English. So I guess that's an open question.
Anyway, gotta get going. ttyl.

bye!

9:18 PM
@Cerberus The aphorism that springs to mind is "God helps those who help themselves."

9:41 PM
I've got to go folks. Bye.

@Martha: Oh! So I should thwack them myself. I suppose I could do that...

Q: Is the "-b" to be pronounced in the word "limb"? What about "thumb"? "Crumb"?

BillareI'm confused about the differing pronunciations of words that end in "-b". For example, I remember being some of earliest teachers that the "-b" in limb was meant to be silent, and one should properly pronounce it as lim. Now, that seems to me in contrast with the pronunciation of the word ...

@Billare: Isn't this answerable via a dictionary?

10:41 PM
Okay, well I answered the deeper question.
But I think it could have been worded a bit better (specially the title).

10:58 PM
@MrHen, your answer was quite good! And the question interesting!

Q: Refer to something belonging to someone else and I

CalebHow do I refer to something that belongs to both myself and someone else? Example: - My friend's and I's party. - Mine and my friend's party. - My friend's and my party. I can't figure it out :/

@RegDwight. Is there any way a mod with supernatural powers could repair my blunder (committed too fast and typed in the wrong textarea) ?

11:14 PM
@Kosmonaut Yeah, I didn't quite know how to process that question
