Q: Fictional teleportation scenario and conservation of energy

Dima1982There are many examples in pop culture where someone can teleport (a mutant in X-Men or teleportation as in Star Trek). There are a lot of scenarios where a character is falling from a great height and someone catches them mid-air and teleports them to the ground, saving them. My question is, wh...

Off topic as fictional physics, I believe

1 hour later…
3:51 AM
@Dilaton Manishearth is gone for several days on vacation.
IIRC until June $5^{\textrm{th}}$

Hmmm... I thought he said he'd visit sometimes...

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ Perhaps. I got the impression he meant gone and unavailable but he could be back some point.

BTW,....
Pffft physicists... always looking to bend the rules of the system. — slugster 6 mins ago

I love that the Internet and sites like this can bring two people like you and I separated by thousands of $\mathrm{km}$ and many hours of timezones together in one place to discuss physics.
We're truly lucky compared to the world Einstein and others lived in.

@BrandonEnright Of course.... I had always thought about it - None to discuss ;-)
That's what lead to my addiction (Manish knows how I'm addicted, because we had a private discussion once) ;-)
I'm always excited with this flowing scheme (group chat)

4:01 AM
It's also great that we share a language. Of course that's due to a huge amount of work by you to learn English.

@BrandonEnright Ohh.. It's your native.. Isn't it?
My bad... But (a secret), I don't speak English like I do in chat ;-)

Yeah English is my native language. It often makes me feel guilty that I didn't have to work to learn it.

@BrandonEnright Guilty... Eh? :P

I spend more time communicating with others that learned English in their adulthood than learned it naturally.
So I didn't put any work into the prerequisite that allows us to communicate and they put a huge amount into it. That's not "fair".

@BrandonEnright Truly speaking, the English I speak now is actually from the members here...
I always rob some words from those pro's...! ;-)

4:04 AM
Your English is pretty good. You have a better grasp of the details than most Indian-English speakers I know.
Almost every idea you communicate comes across with enough detail it's clear and understandable.

@BrandonEnright Thanks... I got a positive response. I think I can use that to my next mod election ;-)

To be honest, your English isn't what's holding you back from a moderator election.

@BrandonEnright The way I presented (nominated) myself first was very bad...
1 sec...

I saw.
It wasn't bad.

Ohh... BTW, did you see the town hall chat digest...?

4:07 AM
No.

A: 2012 Moderator Election - Town Hall Chat Digest

Tim Stone David Zaslavsky asked Crazy Buddy: If I remember correctly, you've said that you are not (yet!) a fluent English speaker. Do you think there is a chance of you misunderstanding people's comments while moderating, and if so, how would you prevent this from causing problems? Crazy Buddy answer...

When you get sometime, read the whole story... In fact, Ron Maimon also participated in it ;-)
Town hall chat happens during the final phase of election...

If you allow me to speak my mind... This isn't meant to hurt your feelings.

@BrandonEnright I know... ;-)

In terms of English, your fully qualified. I think you understand it enough to make good moderation decisions.
I think you lack maturity. That's not something you can "work harder at". You're 17 or 18 now, right? I think you probably won't be qualified until at least 25.
You need more experience dealing with conflict and "exotic" personalities.

@BrandonEnright Thanks... Maybe I should creatively try to induce something like humor into my speech...
@BrandonEnright Hey... That's a long time ya know..! :D

4:14 AM
It is. Maturity can't be rush.

I'm patient..! (I mean, I'm waiting) :P
(When someone says "I'm patient" in India, AFAIK most people start to think of the phrase: "I'm a patient")

I would not have been patient when I was 17-19 either.

Maybe I'd get some experience when I go abroad (especially US) for my higher studies...

Some people are really mature at 19. That wasn't me.
I think there is something to say for years of experience and maturity.

10 years back..? (every decade) the era was (has been) different

4:20 AM
I have no doubt that you work hard and try hard to do your best. To be completely frank though, I would not vote for you in a moderator election because I feel you lack the necessary maturity to resolve disputes and difficult conflicts.

I don't think only maturity is necessary for a mod... (I like open'ness)
There are enough mature guys already here ya know... (what about David or dmckee?)

Openness == transparance
transparency I mean

@BrandonEnright Psychologist..? Man, I shouldn't have started speech with you :P

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ No I'm just very introspective. I look back at myself at that age and try to guage where you are. My view is inherently biased and distorted by my own perspectives.

I see that... Cool (Good orator you're) ;-)
10 mins... brb after breakfast :D

4:35 AM
Hmm... Once you interrupt a conversation, there's no way to start it again :D

Did someone notice that nonagon has been suspended...
I feel guilty now whether I had screwed up something on MSO..! :/

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ In my opinion we shouldn't use this chat to discuss the shortcomings of other users. Unfortunately I participated in the chat about Nonagon as much an anyone else.
That being said, he had a suspension coming.

@BrandonEnright Ohh.. Cool... Leave it..!
(Still wondering, he's suspended on math.SE too)
BTW, the answerer actually guessed it right ;-)
I hate to sound negative but non-mods can't tell if a user has other accounts. I'm not trying to imply that's the case here, but I'm just suggesting another possibility. — Mysticial 10 hours ago
This is the interesting case ever..! (in my SE activity) ;-)
Now, I can understand why dmckee said that. Our mods have watched those voting patterns :D

4:54 AM
Our mods have a very difficult job.
A rather thankless one too.

Nope... I'm just curious about their tools... Waiting for 10k to access those ;-)

You'll get there, I have no doubt about that.

Of course, we all would get it... (In fact, our rate of rep. score is high) ;-)
I think I'm attracted towards this badges, scores, votes, etc. scheme... That maybe the reason for curiosity ;-)

My first year of college my roomate was from cambodia and his English was terrible. Much worse than yours. He worked really hard and 4 years later when he graduated his English was great. There was no way to compare the 4-year difference
.
The same will happen to you if you work at it.

@BrandonEnright I understand (I'm working on it)

5:00 AM
I can see that you are and it shows in your posts and edits :-)

I watch atleast a movie per day with my uncle (or someone nearby)... - especially subtitles help me much
@BrandonEnright Thanks Brandon... for your positive feedback - I take your advice :P
The only problem I have now - is Spoken English
I'm working on it by speaking to an imaginative apparition like John Nash :P

1 hour later…
6:06 AM
@BrandonEnright Okay... I think I've found "why you said that..!"

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ Hey I'm not sure which "said that" you're referring too but I just went to bed so leave me a message and good night! :-)

@BrandonEnright I thought you had already gone..! :P

Well I had but I forgot to turn the sound off and I have the bad habit of jumping out of bed when I hear a sound that means I have a message waiting :-p
Anyways my machine is on mute now. G'night and have a good day!

Gd n8 - be sure you read those messages ;-)

Usually, (as I'm quite unstable) I keep changing my behavior often...
I'm quite confident that you'd change your judgement within several months for sure ;-)
@ChrisWhite: So, you didn't go to bed..?\ :P

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ Not yet....

ah... I know you..! You go to sleep only at morning IIRC ;-)

A: Altering Venus rotational speed to match Earth's via weather manipulation

Clive BallardSome good information with regard to Venus climate and the recent "Venus Express" mission, can be found at: http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2008/03/venus-unveiled/ Some of the comments also contain good info, but there are,a lot of them. >200. If looking for more, or different inf...

user54412
and I'm wondering if people think it counts as spam

user54412
i mean its only purpose is to link to a global warming site, which has really nothing to do with the rotation rate of Venus

user54412
6:14 AM
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ actually, I'm in a different time zone right now

user54412
it's not even midnight yet :P

@ChrisWhite Flagged it..! :D
@ChrisWhite Cool... But, Isn't Brandon more or less near your time zone..?
I think he's too sleepy while you're too studious ;-)

user54412
Probably - I think we're in the same state

Whaaaa... (Then, I'm right) :P

1 hour later…
7:41 AM
@ChrisWhite Hmm... I've noticed that the answer may not necessarily be a spam...
It's not useful, as it isn't related to what the question really asks...
The link gives some info about Venus (can be obtained from Wiki or so...)
Maybe a link-only answer ;-)

Q: Physics SE should emphasis on problem solving

Kazi arafat AhmedI observed math SE is more active than physics SE. They don't close problems. I think Physics SE should encourage problem solving. Moderator should not close homework problem. This will help community to think about harder one.

Q: What is the force of air resistance on slow-moving ball in air?

AnnaI'm trying to figure out if an accelerometer can detect the change in air resistance as a small ball (0.1kg, 4cm radius) is thrown up (2m) and falls down again. This works out to a velocity range of 1.4 m/s to -1.4m/s. How can I estimate the acceleration due to air resistance at these speeds?

I had VTC'd this question...

A: Physics SE should emphasis on problem solving

Ϛѓăʑɏ βµԂԃϔPrecisely, they've stopped closing homeworks and our HWs are quite less compared to Math.SE and we've got enough active users (especially me) and actively rushing mods to close those things... I think I had screwed up something in the middle...
Anyone interested to review that...

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ These are all from MSO ..

Wha...?
I need a clue :D

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ see the most upvoted question on MSO main page.
means answers in it.....

@userØØ7 I got that now :P

1:09 PM
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ Yes you see your IP address...Everyone see their own IP
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ Don't edit your chat message......

@userØØ7 Well,.. Why's that so..? It does respond to you..! :P
I can think why you say that..!
I didn't get that first (wondered whether MSO did this to me)
Happy..? :P

1:27 PM
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ Also you see how upvotes are gone in nonagon's account??User removed:-261. That means he had been using other account prevously as well and the other bounty was also from fake rep.

@userØØ7 I know... That's what meant by "voting irregularities"... ;-)
Everyday, they should think that one day or other, they'd get caught ;-)
Wondering if Manish is around...
I mean, what the hell is this..?

3 hours later…
4:29 PM
Everyone...
Today, I noticed something different (I think this happens every day)
Usually, I spend atleast 5 hours hearing music with my 2.1 surround ;-)
In my room, it doesn't have a significant effect.
As my bathroom occupies less volume, I can reason that sound is reverberating more inside...
But, what about my hall..?
The bass is too high in my hall whereas in my room, bass & treble are quite equalized...

My thought is that bass (being at a low frequency) is easily transmitted through a given volume than treble without significant loss in energy...
As in case of pressure waves, treble spends most of its energy pushing the medium back & forth and gets weaker before spreading out...
Hope I'm right with this thought ;-)

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ A possible explanation can be Eco sounds are produced.

4:45 PM
@userØØ7 Echo is what I meant by reverberation (a resonance)... Of course, I can hear those in my bathroom (has less/no absorbers)
My room & my hall are quite same except that the hall's volume is twice that of my room (wood, plastic things, being more or less the same)
I suspect this has to do more with distance covered by these waves. I maybe wrong ;-)

5:13 PM
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ I think those 2 lines(posted by me |^ ) are making the image above it look dirty. But it can't be removed now.

Why it should be removed..?

If it's ok then no problem :)

Chat is totally for fun & only fun...
There's no necessary to format or delete transcripts (neither dump something useless inside) unless very necessary ;-)

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ Dou you think I shud have posted this math.stackexchange.com/questions/403069/… question in physics.se?

@userØØ7 yep..! of course - flag it ;-)

5:28 PM
the calculations had been a page long so I think maybe someone else do it easily.

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ but I fear that here it would be considered only a mathematical querry.

1 sec...
What do you really want..? I think you didn't define that on the question..!
(First, I had a view over the question only)
BTW, incorrect definition of torque..!

Yes, if you think it include physics then it will be better to migrate it. But I think that just include 3D .
@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ I think i defined $\vec r $ wrongly.
? or just Fxr is the problem(instead of rxF)?.

@userØØ7 Nope.. here's what I asked you...
Okay, so what's your question? — Muphrid 32 secs ago
@userØØ7 Yep..!

5:33 PM
Are you Muphrid?

@userØØ7 Sorry... I'm always crazy - Just indicated that I asked the same..!
@userØØ7: Better see what math mods do... In its current form, it's too localized here ;-)

@ϚѓăʑɏβµԂԃϔ Yes but not too localised in M.SE

I know...

Darn, I guess I should give some answers in the near future, my question/answer ration starts to detoriate and it is in danger to even get divergent ... That makes me somehow feel like a nogoodnik :-/ (?).

I have some questions about physics education, who can help me ?

@kvasirr what's the basic gist of your question? It have have already been asked here or there may be a good place in the stack exchange network to ask it
