Q: It´s allowed to play with rubik cube in shabos? if not whay? what melache?

YossefIt´s allowed to play with rubik cube in shabos? if not whay?

Things that are awesome:
1) This not the first time someone's posted this question.
2) @DoubleAA managed to recall this.

@IsaacMoses Indeed.

Adorable misogynistic photo. But is it spelled correctly?
Should there be a Yud in Ishti?

1:57 PM
@SethJ Presumably, that's acceptable in ketiv malei

2:09 PM
@SethJ Incidentally, I read the misogyny here as very mild. The joke would work almost as well if there was a Hebrew word for "spouse," and it was substituted there for "Ishti."

Q: What is the appropriate response of someone outside Israel during a war?

user1668During a war or large scale military operation what are some of the best things for a person living in chutz l'arertz to do? Is saying tehillim and doing extra chesed enough? Should a person run to Israel and join the effort? Is there a middle ground? Sourced answers only, please.

^^^ Well-timed bounce by @Community.

Woohoo! My first good answer (though, not, I hope, my first good answer).
@IsaacMoses I'm surprised there's no vav in hakol though. That's a pretty common addition in the plene.
Also, shouldn't there by an "es" in there? Or does Modern Hebrew grammar allow that to be dropped, at least colloquially?

@msh210 woo hoo! I hope someday to have a good question (I seem to do better with questions than answers :-) ).

@MonicaCellio This answer, btw, is a CW (not only is it CW de jure, but a bunch of people contributed), so my receiving the good answer badge is a bit of a joke.
FWIW we have two good questions with good answers:

A: What is the halachic source for objection to gay (civil) marriage?

ShalomHere's a more cut and dry answer. Said Ulla: There were thirty commandments that Noahides accepted, but th...

A: Rejecting others' friend requests on Facebook

jakeIn Pirkei Avos (1:15), we find clear instructions regarding this matter: הוי מקבל את כל האדם בספר פנים One should accept all persons on Facebook.

@msh210 nice! I'm glad we have one that's not purim torah. :-)

hi
just wanted to share this with you guys. found it via a reddit thread I think it's amazing.

@msh210 On a t-shirt, I think the approach to take is a very descriptivist one.

@IsaacMoses For sure. Hence my "at least colloquially".

@msh210 I like to think that someone who kicks off and helps sustain a communal effort deserves credit for the outcome of that effort. Yeyasher kochacha!
@msh210 My gut sense, informed primarily by having gone to yeshiva in Israel for a year, over a decade ago, is that the answer is "yes."

@Jin Wow. Just -- wow.
@IsaacMoses Yes it can be dropped?

@msh210 Yes it does get dropped. :)
@Jin Sounds amazing. I wish I could see Imgur from here.

4:07 PM
@IsaacMoses Can you at least see the imgur description pages, if not the pictures on them?

@Jin sounds intriguing from the Reddit page -- looking forward to seeing the image when I get home!

Jin
@MonicaCellio @IsaacMoses definitely check it out later.

@Jin will do. Thanks for letting us know.

@msh210 Nope. Nothing from that domain

@Jin wait, I just realized I have the internet in my pocket, so I looked at this on my phone. Wow! I want to see all that on a bigger display later, but... that's just mind-blowing. @IsaacMoses, if you have a phone, check it out!

@IsaacMoses what about images on miyodeya questions and answers? they're hosted on imgur too.

@MonicaCellio I economize on my mobile data usage (I use Ting, which charges essentially a la cart, and am cheap), and there's no wifi here. I'll look at home.

@IsaacMoses makes sense. I assume it's not going anywhere. (I don't know Ting.)

@Jin Nope. Also no non-gravatar user avatars.
@MonicaCellio ting.com/plans If my wife and I combined can keep it to under 100 MB for the month, that portion of our bill is $3. If we exceed 100, it goes up to $13. (BTW, if you like this billing model, you might be able to get them to pay your early termination fee, and here's my referral link. </shill>)

@IsaacMoses :-) I need to check what my data usage is these days...

Hey smart ppl - @DoubleAA @msh210 @IsaacMoses @HodofHod:
Are any of you familiar with instances of Parshanuth similar to this one?

Q: Why did God destroy Sodom in such a strange way?

nikmasiWhy does it rain both fire and brimstone (gafris - 19:24) on Sodom surely one or the other was enough? Furthermore, if the whole city is 'turned upside down' (19:25) why was there a need to rain anything down at all?

What I mean is, we have so many miracles mentioned in TaNa"Ch, and they are in fact analyzed for their meaning, but are they ever subdivided like this one?
"I get the fire part, but why the brimstone, and why the raining down?"
I mean, do we subdivide the Makkoth in Mitzrayim into "I understand the locusts, but why did they have to eat everything?"
Or, "I understand saving Yishma'el, but why did it have to be a well, not a river?"

@SethJ I can't provide an example offhand, by I think so. It might not always be posed as a question, but commentaries pick all kinds of stuff to pieces, assuming omnisignificance. joshwaxman could probably give you a fairly definitive answer.

8:31 PM
@SethJ Not sure about parshanus, but darshanus yes. IIRC midrashim describe various afflictions earned by Vashti, the m'rag'lim, and others, and later works (maybe the midrashim themselves?) state why each was deserved. I can't, however, provide any citations.
Some well-done a cappella. (All-male.) (I've linked to two songs I know. The same n-et has more, on YouTube, that I don't.)

Q: Why should A Capella music be allowed during Sefirah?

Seth JI'd like to breathe new life into, and put a new spin on, this thread: http://mi.yodeya.com/questions/1046/live-vs-recorded-music-during-the-omer So, a series of questions: I'm not sure how I feel about: a)the custom to refrain from listening to recorded music during Sefirah or b)the assumptio...

You added the word "significantly" in your summary. — Double AA 4 hours ago
@doubleAA: B'Yoker to my understanding means "significantly" more. That is why the original is there for the reader to translate on their own. — Gershon Gold 4 hours ago
@GershonGold If so, then how would you say "more expensive" without "significantly" in Hebrew? — Double AA 4 hours ago

@msh210 It doesn't one box it in chat though
