Upvote that shit before idiots start running around with thermal cameras in smoldering server rooms.

@GeorgeEdison And Oracle PeopleSoft thinks it's not a supported operating system...

@MichaelHampton Eww, Oracle

Wasn't my link!

@JeffFerland downvoted That's what you wanted, right?

@GeorgeEdison Are you surprised to see xkcd in here?

@StackExchange Flowbomb?
Someone punch me in the head.

@WesleyDavid the haven't implemented punch over tcp/ip so I can't

I want you to hit me. As. Hard. As. You. Can.
"You hit me in the earrrr!"
@Iain My but you're an earlybird.

I think the UK went to summer time.

mornin'
UK is still only 06:39
07:39 here in the civilised world

@DennisKaarsemaker Right, that's summer time

@WesleyDavid I'm usually about by now
So, how is a question about finding a source of smoke in a server room on topic for SF ?

It's probably more ontopic for Firefighting.SE.
Waits for somebody to propose that on Area51...

5:46 AM
@Iain It's kitschy at best. I think someone internet-famous must have spread that link around to get that many views, thus upvotes, thus give it some kind of street cred so it didn't get nuked from orbit.
^ That question.

Years ago I had just that smoke in a storage room but no obvious source. I called out the fire department who used a thermal imaging camera to find a wall mounted fan control switch had released it's magic smoke.

I totally blame my current specialisation in school, but "what to do in case of magic smoke" needs to be covered in your DR and IR plans ;p
BEFORE something catches fire

So it's apparently true that most bikes are made by fairly generic manufacturers and the Specialized and Bianci and Cannondale, etc. are just a relatively small percentage of bikes manufactured and sold?
I don't mean the "BSOs" like Huffy and whatnot
^ Who the heck is "Gravity"?
Never heard of them.
Why would I pay them $400 with shipping for a bike?

@WesleyDavid: well, large local manufactuers
Flying Pigeon (; Pinyin: fēigē) is a Chinese bicycle company based in Tianjin, a direct-controlled municipality, in Northeastern China. With some 500 million units made, the Flying Pigeon is the most popular vehicle ever. Origins In 1936, a Japanese businessman built a factory in Tianjin which was named "Changho Works" and started to make "Anchor" bicycles. The brand name was changed to "Victory", and then renamed to "Zhongzi". After the Communists led by Mao Zedong came to power in 1949, the bicycle industry was revived. In April 1949, Chairman Mao's heir apparent, vice president Li...

@WesleyDavid Isn't Giant the largest frame manufacturer on the planet ?

@Iain With a name like that it had better be.
The heck is "Windsor Wellington"?? bikesdirect.com/products/windsor/wellington1_IX.htm
Is that a bike shaped object cleverly masquerading as a bicycle?
Help me @freiheit and @ewwhite I am so confused!!
Well, confusion isn't an unusual state for me to be in.
Usually it's also mixed with panic and blatant disregard for personal safety.

@WesleyDavid BSO is usually a 'mountain bike' (style) with full/part suspension etc which is so loose and springy that you use more energy to the springs than you use to go forward

If this cardboard bike would hurry up and get put into production, I'd buy it: fastcodesign.com/1670753/…
@Iain Familiar with a brand Motobecane?

Nope

Seing a ton of metal objects with pedals attached to them that have their name on them: motobecane.com

superuser.com/questions/578335/… If I talk the OP into changing his question for a 'what do I look for' type question, you guys want this?

8:00 AM
No, I can't support this. It's borderline topical (personally I think it's off topic). The correct thing to do it get out, stay out, get the fire department out. Spending 2 hours in a toxic environment when something is overheating is plain stupid and we shouldn't be encouraging it. At the risk of being controversial the OP should have been advised to get a professional firefighter. — Iain 11 mins ago

8:20 AM
@Iain I helped a guy here assemble his new 'Tesco Matterhorn' BSO a couple of days ago.
The new wheels were so out of true there was about 5mm of lateral travel on one each rotation.

@syneticon-dj if you look at the smell in the computer room guys other highly upvoted question I think you'll realise that the people he works for are a bunch of shysters so fitting fire detection and suppressant to a DC wouldn't be anything they would consider.
@SmallClanger I know - they're deadfull

Q: Reinstall Server 2012

NickCAnyone know how to repair / reinstall Server 2012 correctly? Not quite as daft a question as it first sounds. Have just discovered that despite being present the 'Refresh your PC' option is not designed to work with Server 2012. There is a 'Reset your PC' option but does this work on Server 20...

Cheeky

@Dan Yes... why? Why, oh why? If you can't just reinstall, you're doing it wrong.

Dan
@HopelessN00b Exactly what I just said, can't see the point
http://www.associateddata.co.uk/

Formed in 1993, just a few years before the website was built by the looks of it

@Dan Their acronym is ADD. Figures.

Dan
@SmallClanger The whole thing is amazing, I can' tbelieve he linked to it

10:46 AM
Ooh, they do website design.

Dan
Forget that dude, they do cloud e-mail:

http://www.associateddata.co.uk/Internet.htm
http://www.associateddata.co.uk/Broadband.htm
And ADSL, oddly.

Only one thing missing:

Yeah, holy hell.

Dan
No hit counter either - shame
Oh shit, no it does have one - it just doesn't work (Bottom right of the home page)

Not true, I see something that says "Hit Counter."
Yeah, that one.

Dan
10:54 AM
Incredible

I never know what to make of this kind of... situation. Is he trying to evoke our pity, genuinely clueless, a brilliant satirist, or something else?

15year old Mark Zuckerberg's Angelfire page. :)

Dan
@HopelessN00b Honestly, I just think they made it 10 years ago (And the rest, actually - that's more like mid 90's) and haven't touched it since
@SmallClanger Blocked here, but saw the post on the reg - quite intriguing

@Dan Well, sure, that's a given. But linking to it in your profile, I mean. It's one thing if they made it and forgot about it... but they made it, and seem to still be using it. Why would they still use that? (Pity, satire, cluelessness, etc...)

Dan
10:58 AM
Whoa, WTF
That website, in its current form, didn't come about until 2003
Which, yes, it's 10 years ago - but I was making websites then and they didn't look like that
Just a one man band, operating from his house, by the looks of it. Fair play though, he's had a Limited (Incorporated to you) company since 1998, though, so must be doing something vaguely right

Or he's got a day job and takes on one job a year...

@Dan Maybe it's tougher over there, but I've set up several Inc.'s, LLCs and S-corps over the years. Takes a few minutes to fill out and file the forms.

Dan
Well, that, too. Why make it Limited though - harder work than it's worth surely
@HopelessN00b Nah, I'm probably giving him too much benefit of the doubt. I was actually thinking of VAT registered, which is more involved but I don't think setting up a Limited company is particularly strenuous

Scrounging to get under my data center's power limit....
Disabling hyperthreading saves a few watts, right?

I highly doubt that
are you using speedstep?

I'm clocked down to 1.6GHz :(
I'm 18 Watts over my limit.
One thing that's not clear... better to use OS-level power management or BIOS-level power management?
(vmware)

Dan
I've always been lead to believe that one should stay away from BIOS power management with hypervisors
Certainly, XenServer hates it

Dan
12:42 PM
My heart still skips a beat when I format a freshly-connected-to, previously used, LUN

<shudder>
@ewwhite I prefer OS-level, because it's easier to get into and manage. And uniform... don't have to worry about different BIOS vendors and versions if you just use the VMWare power management for everything.

yeah, I'm doing an A/B test.

@Dan afaik vmware agrees on that

Dan
@pauska Yeah, I think the C-STATES mess them up. Maximum Performance, Static Power Profile all the way!

Sometimes VMware says to use OS control mode

@ewwhite No, I know - I just wouldn't have thought it'd make that much difference. You'd expect it to simply ramp up as it needs to

So there's a news commentator named Chuck Todd. He has a creepy beard/goatee. I googled "Chuck Todd creepy beard"...

I don't like that man's face.

and landed on this wonderful infographic detailing the trustworthiness of beards.

I'm in the neutral range
well once my mustache grows back, so right now I'm in the questionable.

1:19 PM
But the neckbeard doesn't fare so well.

I read that as I'm in the natural range

By that infographic, @MDMarra is very trustworthy

Dan
Where does "Haven't been bothered to shave this week" fit in

@ewwhite: I'd trust a neckbeard to get a computer running. NOT not to accidentally on purpose kill me ;p

I just need my goatee to connect to my mustache

1:20 PM
I'm rocking the chin straps

My facial hair is a disaster
Then again you guys have had much more time to grow it.
I've been on T for 2 years and almost 3 months. So really, not too bad in the short amount of time.

Dan
Dude, I've had 26 years and can't grow a moustache for anything. Don't worry about it!

w00t I can grow one! @Dan
If an interviewer asked me what my biggest strength was, I'd say my mustache.

lol
I'd trade my beard in for more hair on my head ;p

Q: Debian not obeying static IP for ethernet

demizeI'm using a Raspberry Pi as a router for a small network (wireless being shared over ethernet) right now, and it's running its Raspbian distro of Debian. (and probably end up with a messy hippy ponytail

@JourneymanGeek I guess I can't complain, I have a full head of thick hair.
Lots of guys get super bad receding hairlines/lose their hair

Dan
@Cole I got that too - I like to think it's because I'm such a man
When I was 18 I had literal shoulder+ length hair. Now I have to have a Grade 1 buzzcut every couple of weeks to not look like a paedophile

@Dan I have to get my haircut every 2 weeks
I get a 0 - 1.5 fade and shit grows out in 2 weeks
Even my barber is like "dude that's unreal"

Dan
if I had my way I'd be 100% bald now, the Picard look, but the Mrs says no for the moment

I probably would look weird bald

1:28 PM
@Cole I'm glad I haven't been asked that question in many years. My inner smartass always manages to break out in style when someone serves up a question like that.

@HopelessN00b I've been asked that almost every job interview
Except $oldjob

@ewwhite OS control good, BIOS baaaad

@pauska ¿por que?

@Cole Ugh. It's a terrible, useless question. Interviewers should be ashamed to ask it.

Dan
Your FAQ says that if its about networking or routing and is not in a home setting, it's relevant here. This is about networking, and it is not in a home setting. I've been directed to set up this network in a professional setting. — demize 3 mins ago
What. A. Prick.

1:32 PM
@Cole: genetics, I've got more hair than my dad had at my age (but its still obviously shiny), but the trade off is I'm also getting premie white hair
Using a tiltwheel to change tracks is awesome <3

@JourneymanGeek yeah my dad is 56 and has a full head of hair and not 100% gray yet. My mom was 100% gray at like 45. I've fairly gray now.

@Cole: mom's side goes white, but dosen't go bald. Dad's side is opposite
I also got the hammer toe from my mom's side, and the loose joints from my dad's side

I got the height from my mother -_-

You rectify this problem by taking advantage of theis opportunity to replace your toy with a real router. If you're going to insist that this is a professional IT question, that's only professional IT response there is. — HopelessN00b 18 secs ago

We need the Chopper-Hammer more often

Yeah. We suffer idiocy and attitude way too much around here.

Dan
@HopelessN00b I know, I've been here ages :D

Dan
@ChrisS As I explained to my girlfriend, after a short 'discussion' with a driver about how to stop at pedestrian crossings, I'm basically Judge Dredd

1:45 PM

Dan
@ChrisS See, and if more people understood that, things would be great

I'm more of a chopper pilot...

Dan
@ChrisS ..oh?

Dan
@ChrisS I like your style, sir

1:48 PM
Also, while I generally liked the new Dredd movie, he was severely lacking in the style precedent set by Stalone.

Dan
I've yet to see it, but I shall
@ewwhite That test suite looks interesting, going to have a play with that

The new movie feels like they took one of the comics and made it into a movie... very episodic (like a huge budget TV show; which if they could make it work, I wouldn't mind). There were more than a few unforgivable sins in Stalone's movie, his acting aside.

@Dan a coworker here introduced me to it.

Dan
@ewwhite I like that it's multiplatform - makes it much easier to compare and standardise tests

So apparently when an AD account gets frequent lockouts, and the source is from the Citrix Netscaler - we just create a new AD acocunt for the user. That doesn't make sense to me.

Dan
@Cole Why would you do that?

@Dan because they can't track down where the account is getting locked out from.

Dan
2:08 PM
@Cole Appreciate that, but it's obviously some personal device which connects so the same is just going to happen shortly

@Dan That's my thought.

In startup we are gamify site outage. Three outage and ops team is out.

Dan
Is it possible to add Devops Borat onto LinkedIn. I want everyone to see his tweets :D

@Dan well LDAP authentication goes through the Netscaler
A lot of internal stuff does, like our Portal.

Dan
As in the Netscaler performs LDAP authentication behalf of those services, or it just passes it through?

2:12 PM
@Dan passes through I believe.
I'm trying to get information on it, no one knows how it's setup
Since the guy who set up all this shit - left.
No one knows where anything is

Dan
Haha, NetScalers are beasty - I haven't really got my head round them. So many functions it's unreal
Is it a physical application, or virtual?

what a douche

@Dan the Netscaler? It's an appliance.

Dan
@Cole Nice - they're not cheap.

@Dan I think we're getting rid of it. It's leased
Replaced with a Raritan
Wait maybe not Raritan
some other fucking company, I don't know

Dan

The NetScalers are shit hot, they're just massively complex and expensive

@Cole Sure does

Sounds like hax
Well wtf, this is odd

I'll agree with the OP, phone activation is total BS.

2:34 PM
Created a test user, put it in the group of users having the issue resolving SQLPROD and no problem

Still sounds odd that you would rather waste time on SF looking for a workaround, instead of just reinstalling and getting back on the phone with MS activation.

Dan
@jscott Well, exactly yeah. I can't pretend like I've never put "Call Microsoft" to the back of the days "To Do" pile, but y'know, needs must. Why bodge a server for the sake of it

Q: Allowing inside traffic to outside on ASA 5505

JamesWe have an ASA 5505 with an inside interface 10.22.33.0/24 and outside x.x.x.x/26. The inside ip's are obviously private and the outside ip's are public. I've been able to set up a nat rule to route all requests to one of the public addresses to server1 with a private address 10.22.33.5. By add...

2:42 PM
@Cole What? That's a stellar question. He tells us what is wrong, it's understandable, there's a concrete answer. Sure, he's not CCIE, but hey... it's not crap.

I think I'm just in a pissy mood today.
Got woken up in the very early morning to restart the BES Server shit because we're too cheap to buy a second server since "it should work" even though we've exceeded the maximum BES users on a single server.
by like 500.

@Cole That's a valid reason to be in a pissy mood.

Anyone use a netflow collector they are really fond of?

@JeffFerland it's every other day at this point - and I'm first on call till June.

@Cole Did you have to leave the bed?

@JeffFerland I did

@Cole Screw that. Get a relay you can SSH into to power cycle the thing from home.

@JeffFerland I dunno about stellar. I think I'm with Cole about that question... it's really just "halp why can't I connect to the interwebz through my ASA?" but with a charming little story about how he NATTed incoming traffic to a server.

@JeffFerland had to get up to sit at my computer. It's Domino too...so had to VPN in > RDP > Kill domino > rename the log file > restart the services
Lotus Domino is a cunt.
