@JNK no, what?
:)

JNK
posting it now

@FreshPrinceOfSO But that's not what I meant. He is creating a view inside his dynamic sql and then he is doing a SELECT from that same view

A: Weird error on stored procedure

JNKYour actual issue is here: ' + convert(varchar(50), ' You have a CONVERT without a second argument. It could be you meant to include either the CONVERT in the dynamic SQL or you meant to have this part ' + [UserName] ) as JobName as the end of your CONVERT but in either case, it doesn'...

@Lamak the object will exist in the real scope and he can select from it
he may need a GO after the EXEC but I'm not sure

@JNK way to ruin my parade

@JNK That's exactly it, so he can't do it on an sp. The view needs to exists first (I think)

JNK
8:03 PM
@Lamak you can do it in a script. When you script all objects in a db out it generates all the views in dynamic sql by default I believe
@FreshPrinceOfSO SORRY CHARLIE

@JNK you may be right

JNK
I'm calling you charlie now so I can remember it btw
you have changed your name like 12 times in the past month

@JNK 4, actually.

@MaxVernon Should be easy with Profiler, if it's not a very busy environment..

Its a VERY busy environment, unfortunately!

8:07 PM
Uhmm, even that, I'd take only SQL Statements with text like '%yourFunctionName%', and eyeball it and stop it immediately as a call would come. Anyway, Profiler client not started from the prod server itself, but another machine.
then I'd search for that statement in the sysmodules sys table
as long as filtering is appropriate, even a busy env would stand some actions collected with Profiler

Q: Mysql synchronize the database with a new database

TuyoshiiBrasilI need synchronize a database(just new records maintaining the auto increment) with a new database(blank), maintaining auto increment and doubling the next data entered in both. is there a setting that I apply on my server for me to achieve this? sorry, my english is bad!

Extended Events should be lighter, but didn't get any proficient with them yet.. :)

@JNK Okay, Frank.
So I just discovered this

Q: Syntax highlighting language hints

Rowland ShawDo you think it would be worthwhile to provide hints as to what language to use for the syntax highlighting? Sometimes I find the highlighting on SQL or VB.NET answers is more distracting than helpful; for example: Converting MySQL select to PostgreSQL Retrieving data from a VB.NET arraylist o...

@MaxVernon make that sys.sql_modules
that is good if it's called from a stored procedure, but if it's from a report.. you should investigate further

Q: Junction Table in SQL Server

user2233583I am having difficulty creating a junction table in a new database. I used these queries to create the tables: CREATE TABLE dbo.EmployeeUnavailability ( ID INT IDENTITY(1,1) PRIMARY KEY, EmployeeName varchar(50), Monday varchar(10), Tuesday varchar(10), Wednesday varchar(10), Thursday var...

@bluefeet OW! Right in the E.F. Codd.

@Marian I found how to do this using Extended Events. Thanks @JNK and @Marian for making me think about it! I posted the question and answer on dba.se for future visitors.

@MaxVernon Oh, you and you DuckDuckGo.com

@Lamak I just can't standing saying I "googled" something!

@MaxVernon the duck thing, it's pretty good actually :-)

8:53 PM
@Marian yeah, interestingly I find it has great results, and is very clean, and easy to use. For me, that's a win.

@MaxVernon lol. But still, you should say that you "DuckDuckgoed something

and with the short url, ddg.gg it's easy to type!

instead of I did a search at DuckDuckGo.com

@Lamak LOL!

I like that a google search for "how to accept" comes up with stack overflow at #5

8:54 PM
@MaxVernon I like the box thingie, coming from the extension, even if I go to google

@Marian yeah, the attention to detail is impressive. Have you tried any of the bang ! searches? They are pretty sweet!

@MaxVernon not sure what they are

well for instance you could enter !gi sticky fingers at DuckDuckGo and get a Google Image search for "sticky fingers". Not sure you would want to do that at work!
there is a ton of helpful hints at duckduckgo.com/goodies

@MaxVernon I'll go search for them, thanks!

there are a LOT of bang searches: duckduckgo.com/bang.html

9:01 PM
ah, exactly like google site search?

yes, but really really extended.

Q: SSIS Expressions Date Format get just YY for year

JuanVelezI found many articles on date formatting expressions in SSIS but I couldn't find one that specified how to get just the Year such as 13 for 2013 or 12 for 2012... I tried DATAPART("yy",GETDATE()) but it gives me the same result as DATAPART("yyyy",GETDATE()) I was thinking of a dirty/hack f...

Not sure I approve of SSIS having a transaction level called "Chaos"

@MikeFal Truth in advertising. what's the world coming to?

@MikeFal It was originally specified as "oh for fuqs sake, I give up" but that was described as too unwieldy

@MaxVernon Disappointing
Evening all :)

@MarkStorey-Smith howdy

Mornin' Mark
Easter Tuesday report: sucks, I want it to be Easter Friday again :(

Sad robot

We need a community effort on something chaps, can you help?

@MarkStorey-Smith APRIL FOOLS!!! HAHAHAHA
sorry. overanxious?

@swasheck Get the bertrand back!

@MarkStorey-Smith HM. i can only think of a couple of ways to do that and one would be to permanently ban a particular user

10:02 PM
@swasheck You mean me? Oh, I could sacrifice myself.

@ypercube surely it's not you
@ypercube it'd be more likely to be me than you

@AaronBertrand Drag your miserable, grumpy, SO abusing, idiot slapping, lack of sympathy for dimwittedness but OTHERWISE all round good chap of a self back in here. It's far to SO friendly at the moment.
9
In all seriousness, I feel less smart lately as I'm not getting sufficient visibility of feckless SO questions to make me feel better about my own abilities
3

@MarkStorey-Smith Hahaha so true.

@MarkStorey-Smith pick a random question with the tag

10:11 PM
Hey guys, did you hear about SQL Server 2012 R3?

@AaronBertrand about fecking time :)

Wow
Just as a fair warning.

@AaronBertrand is that an April Fools joke?

@ypercube mmm...maybe?

@AaronBertrand there is a handy "ignore user" feature

10:12 PM
Yup. Feel better about myself already

Wow someone flagged my message?
Holy automated cool it batman

and that was the second question under . Like shooting fish in a barrel.

Guys, please don't flag in this chat room.

Good lord, invasion again

lord that was fun

A: Pivoting 2 columns from 3 Tables and creating pivot-column-names to avoid conflict - SQL-Server 2008R2

bluefeetI personally would do this a bit different. Since you are trying to pivot two separate columns that screams to use the UNPIVOT function. The unpivot will convert your multiple columns into rows to then pivot. Since you have SQL Server 2008, you can use CROSS APPLY and values: select id, cour...

10:14 PM
FLAGS

Good lord, mods go away in the darkness, where you came from.
You don't do the same when I flag in the Tavern

I'm leaving now, as I know pretty much zero about whatever this room's about. :P

@Ullallulloo Heaps and stuff

@MarkStorey-Smith Living on a farm, I know a decent amount about heaps.
Probably different though.

Aaron, drops piles, on the heap... ergo, there will be occasional mod invasions

10:17 PM
@ypercube The Tavern plays by different rules.

no flags there?

wow.

@ypercube it goes by commitee

I think I just found what to ask as a feature for the Heap.
2

i think we should be able to vote to ban as a community

10:30 PM
So, why was Aaron banned?

was he?
i still see him in here
@AaronBertrand you're not banned, right?
nope
he's still around

@swasheck but not talking. Probably because he can't.

ah. pity. funkin' a

Flags (or accumulative flags) get the comment deleted and the user auto-banned for a while.
Not sure if it's 10 or 30 minutes.

ugh

Q: Find out number of active locks on a table

Abdul RahmanI was wondering if there is a way to find out the number of active locks held on a table in SQL Server?

I mean if we're going to ban people for swearing then how the hell have I not been permabanned by now?

@SimonRigharts Good fecking point

@ypercube ... i see your comment. wondering about the relevance? :)

@swasheck I noticed a count of 3 on Aaron's comment, just before it got deleted. Do you want to experiment on my fuck comment above?

@ypercube nah ... i meant on StackOverflow ... "that user is logged in ..."

10:43 PM
@swasheck Ah, sorry

@ypercube no worries :)

So @AlUmmatمجاهد why did you delete that comment? Was it offensive to someone?

@AlUmmatمجاهد Not to me. Is it to you?

@AlUmmatمجاهد I don't find it offensive. So if someone flags a perfectly valid comment, you just remove it without reading it?

so we're going to troll the mods and then berate them until they learn to ignore flags in The Heap? GOOD CALL! We have our plan ... now ... bring me that horizon

10:46 PM
And herein we have the problem with network wide moderation

mods now remove their comments! That is strange.

what was flagged now?
@El'endiaStarman ... which comment was flagged?

@swasheck Why should I tell you?

@El'endiaStarman Social experiment

@El'endiaStarman because we are curious?

10:50 PM
@swasheck Use of my ability for your gain. Pfft.

@El'endiaStarman so if i flag you for a condescending tone what happens?

What's with all the flags?

@swasheck They are probably immune to flagging

(btw ... i didnt but they just popped up)

@OliverSalzburg Very good question.

10:51 PM
Please stop coming here

YAY!!! @Shog9 appeareth

This room was placed in timeout for 1 minute; the topic of this room is "General on- and off-site discussion for dba.stackexchange.com"; - conversation should be limited to that topic.

Look what you've done~

@Shog9 so now can we talk about this like adults?

I don't like this.
2

10:53 PM
@swasheck you mean without flagging every other message? Go for it.

@Shog9 cool. @MarkStorey-Smith and @ypercube may have better grip on this

um, what happened?

@Shog9 but essentially, is there an auto-flag mechanism?

no

I missed the fun since I drove home

10:54 PM
@bluefeet re: Aaron and his ban by an over eager mod from nowhere

@Shog9 (btw ... i didnt flag any of it)

If y'all want to go blue, so be it - but if someone flags a vulgar statement and a mod sees it, there's a decent chance it'll still be removed.

@Shog9 There was a comment earlier (by @Aaron) that was flagged, then 2 mods appeared here and the comment was deleted. And we guess that Aaron was banned due to that from chat for a while.

@ypercube yeah, I saw it

@Shog9 flags are one thing ... banning is something totally different

10:55 PM
so a flagged and deleted comment gets a user auto-banned from chat, right?

and why do i have a blue 0 in my chat thing
nevermind ... f5

@swasheck bans are automatic when a message gets a sufficient number of flags

@Shog9 so the problem with network-wide moderation is that there's little understanding of the internal workings of each site. in this case there's a user who's arrayed against another ... flags ensue and a user gets banned. that seems a bit ... unfair, no?

OK. We can ask a feature of no-bans in the Heap - although I doubt it will be accepted.

@Shog9 And those flags may have been from an over-eager moderator, or two

10:57 PM
@swasheck meh.

@Shog9 nice

@AaronBertrand I hope you're not missing this :)

@MarkStorey-Smith but how? the mods dont show up UNTIL it's flagged, right?

and it would be nice if mods don't respond with "pfft, Why should I tell you?"
2

@swasheck 1 flag

10:59 PM
@MarkStorey-Smith right ... so user 1 flags ... mods show up and brainlessly delete and hammer away, right?

@swasheck Yes, I think that how it worked.

@ypercube especially when i have a supposed connection with that mod outside of this site

@swasheck And take a guess who might have cast the first flag this evening, to prove his point :)

@ypercube @Shog9 this is the core of the problem. delete away, but dont ban

Not me btw

11:00 PM
@ypercube It is normal for moderators to not reveal moderator-only knowledge.

@El'endiaStarman don't you think that's more fitting than your response was?

@El'endiaStarman I find "pfft" more offending than "fuck"

Likewise

@swasheck Normally, it takes a fair number of flags (6 I believe) to delete a message (and trigger a ban). If a moderator marks a flag as valid (or flags a post himself), then that triggers deletion + ban instantly. Moderators can also just ban people for arbitrary lengths of time.
If you feel a ban is unwarranted in a given situation, say something. They're easily lifted.

@Shog9 we kinda were until you put us in timeout :)
(and we were experimenting with flags)

11:02 PM
@swasheck yeah, that's the bit that caught my attention

i'm going home. you all have fun sloshing through the mud.
StackEx is getting more and more ... awkward

@swasheck why would you see a need to do this?

@swasheck You had to know that this experiment could cause a few problems.

@Krazer I was the more "experimental" I think.

@Shog9 So if a couple of moderators with obviously differing views as to acceptable language happen to pile into an otherwise orderly room and elect to make their view felt...

11:07 PM
@ypercube next time instead of "experimenting" you should just ask a mod.

@MarkStorey-Smith ...then y'all either talk it out and come to an understanding, or you get a third-party involved.
(which, I guess you did)

@Shog9 Or scroll up to one of those moderators deleted messages and take a fresh view
I'll be back when I get to a power socket :)

@Krazer How do I do that? You mean ask questions?

@ypercube by pinging them

@ypercube @jco / @jnk / @jack ...

11:08 PM
ok, thnx
@Krazer One of the problems though was that after a few flags had been raised, our questions to the present mods were not answered.

@ypercube Can you provide an example?

26 mins ago, by ypercube
So @AlUmmatمجاهد why did you delete that comment? Was it offensive to someone?
(no answer. Mod erased all his comments after a while)

@ypercube This begs the question, why did was it flagged it in the first place?

I wanted to see if a perfectly valid comment would be deleted due to a single flag. And it was.

Without explanation, unless "pfft" counts.

11:16 PM
Wow, chat's been busy!

@ypercube if you flag something mods will come, but those mods might not be used to general tone and attitude of a room. If you do choose to flag something as spam or offensive, the mods will look at this flag seriously on consider whether it is appropriate or not. The level of appropriateness is subjective however. What you might not find offensive, might be offensive to someone else.

@MarkStorey-Smith - what is dissapointing?

@MaxVernon Your choice of solution to the deadlock problem :)

ohhh. Sorry about that. I had to choose one, and I figured best to choose the answer that I'm actually using - since it has been tested...

11:18 PM
well, tested by me.

as a shit answer and got told off for wasting mod time

I flagged it too. we'll see now.
it is pretty crap answer

@Phil By the non-mod mod?

No idea
"very low quality – Mar 26 at 16:46 declined - flags should not be used to indicate technical inaccuracies, or an altogether wrong answer"

then what should they be used for???

11:21 PM
Exactly

@Phil Could be the non-mod, many of his answers fit that category

or more accurately I guess how would you get rid of a really bad answer?

@MaxVernon Blast it with downvotes

SO is the downvote place. I thought we were above that

@Krazer I agree. But that does not answer why mods feel free to not answer our questions.

11:22 PM
well I guess that works... but when someone says "delete records every time you insert a record" I figure that is pretty dangerous advice. Not that any of us would follow that advice!

@ypercube I can't speak for other mods, but if you ask me a question I'll try to get back to you as best I can.

@Phil VLQ == garbage, nonsense, an unsalvageable blight

@Krazer Yes, you did. Both today and in the previous (flagging incident).

NAA == does not even attempt to answer the question (thanks, me too, separate question)

@Phil Given the choice I'd vote to delete shite/inaccurate/nonsense/dangerous answers, but as per your experience we can't

11:26 PM
@Phil why no comment?

@Shog9 It doesn't deserve it.

@Shog9 This place is more chilled than SO

comments just get you into flame wars trying to prove your point
at least in my experience

By the way, you all forgot to upvote Rolando's answer when you downvoted the turd :)

Most of the mods and so-called "power-users" talk in here and sort things out between themselves
@shog9 It's a brilliant community that some of the other SO sites probably don't have, hence me bringing it up here

11:32 PM
What-ho @AaronBertrand :)

Hey. What a bunch of bullsh*t. Can't say f*ck in any context without mods coming in and stomping around like they own the place. We can't converse like adults here? I didn't say anything offensive to anyone. IMHO.

@Shog9 comments about why an answer as bad - whether you are the down-voter or not - lead to vengeful behavior in enough cases that I've really cut back on doing it.
@Shog9 sometimes I'll comment before there is a down-vote. But once one is there, I've seen way too many cases where the person gets defensive and then suddenly I have a couple of unexplained down-votes on my own answers (or worse, as I'm sure you're aware from meta and our own private conversations).
Anyway I think the mods are too quick to treat us like children. Just another reason this place has become quite less useful and attractive to me of late.

I've no idea how I ended up summoning the likes of @Shog9 !

@MaxVernon it is right, flags should not be used for bad answers. Flags are for answers that aren't answers - should have been a comment, spam, etc. Bad answers are still answers and that's what down-votes are for (and comments, but I just explained why I've been doing less of that).
@Shog9 is a good dude. These other mods that jumped in here, well, since I can only judge them on that one interaction...

11:38 PM
You don't have to comment when you down-vote. But if you're flagging - essentially asking a moderator to delete the answer - then it helps a lot if there's a visible indication as to why the answer is so harmful that simply down-ranking it isn't enough. Whether that's a comment, or in the flag itself.

@Shog9 agree with that. I didn't realize you were talking about a flag specifically.
@Shog9 I didn't follow the arrow, because I'm lazy. I thought we were talking about down-voting that sh*t answer.
Being very careful to not utter curse words, else some big parental mod might find it useful to ban me again. :-(

@AaronBertrand Chill mate, you're a good bloke :)

@Phil tell the mods that, before they blindly ban me for daring to curse
Had enough of that shit in grade school

@AaronBertrand amen brother
I'll take your advice on the flagging

@AaronBertrand If you have time to read all the thread of the last hour, it only needs:
1 user that flags a comment
1 mod (from another site who gets attracted by the flag and is not very lenient n "curse" words or is rather hasty)
to delete the comment and the commenter get banned.

11:45 PM
@AaronBertrand drop me an email - phil@phillip.im

And the (first) flagging user may not knwo the consequences of flagging. I did not know until last week.

@AaronBertrand On that... Like it or not, you offended someone here. What you wrote may have been acceptable to the majority here, but at least one person was upset by it.

Feature suggestion: Retain "flag as spam/offensive" but on click eject the offended person from the room. Problem solved!
:)
@Shog9 I'm sure they can find the door

At the end of the day, all of the mods chat here. We all know each other. Hence me flagging shit and writing why because I know they'll understand
We're not the shit that that is Stack Overflow (Yet!)!

It's actually pretty hard to get chat-banned on SO.

11:47 PM
true. Generally-speaking, you have to seriously piss off an entire room on chat.so

@Shog9 Missed that. Can you link it?

@Phil Just click one of the top starred msgs and scroll back

@Shog9 I get pretty offended when I go to the mall and see all kinds of dumb sh*t. Guess how I solve that? Stop going to the mall.
@Shog9 I find it quite hard to believe that any regular here was offended by what I said.

I wish this was the mall. I could really go for a soft pretzel right now.

@AaronBertrand I find it far more likely that someone was irritated that you can answer pretty much any SQL question with thought and balance, and they wanted to punish you. (keep in mind I didn't see the original comment that got you banned)

11:51 PM
@AaronBertrand Keep in mind, this is also the primary chatroom for dba.se - so you're gonna tend to get folks visiting it who aren't necessarily familiar with chat at all, much less this room's specific culture.

@Shog9 Please accept this image of one, in lieu of a real one:

@MaxVernon Wait, what? Where is an example of this balance of which you speak?

Now I'm hungry

@MarkStorey-Smith lol
all one must do is look at any date/nvarchar question @AaronBertrand has answered.
!
there is no name calling, no degrading comments, just "look, this is how you do it"

@Shog9 We have answered questions from randoms that have dropped in. Without them even asking a question on the site. Try to guide them, but they don't always :)
@shog9 Experts!

11:56 PM
Will be interesting to see if the so-easily-offended is still so-easily-offended.

Guys, as long as you make it clear that there might be some rough language and all agree on what's acceptable, you shouldn't need to flag anything unless it does really out of of hand. People say dumbshit all the time, just look past it and move on.

@Krazer I still think some of you mods tend to shoot first and ask questions later.
@Krazer maybe if you don't understand the culture of a specific room, don't jump on a flag.

@krazer Why are you here? Can you link something unacceptable?

@Phil A few of us saw the flags from earlier. We just didn't leave.

@Phil I think we had 7 mod chappers at one point earlier

11:58 PM
@Shog9 Do you think that a feature request to have the Heap self-moderated has any chance of being accepted?

@Phil I can't have a nice talk with you guys? ;'<

I saw the flag on Shog's timeout comment. So that's why I'm here.

@Phil If it's unacceptable, it's probably already been deleted.

What flags? That's all i'm wondering :) Didn't see! This place is usually cool

@Krazer You know @Phil is kidding, right?

11:59 PM
@ypercube I was, too :p You couldn't tell? >:D

@Krazer Not sure. We haven't talked that much :)
