If you play against the AI, at a certain point it will offer a surrender, say GG, and you can either accept or decline. When this happens, there is still a number of buildings (and possibly units) left to defeat. Destroying them gives XP, which will help me level, but if I accept the defeat, then...

@AshleyNunn I was just so mad when I finished it the first time. I completely missed that there were dialogue options with your companions, so I never spoke to them... Turns out it was an achievement.

I assume the item won't because maxed out implies no more, but I am not sure if that only applies to leveling. I will save these items if they do in fact increase a maxed stat.

There are a few events that result in your child count surging - adopting a neighboring clan, for example - but even in those cases, you tend to benefit more than you're hurt by the kids.
