You start out with a limit of 5 minions and it gradually grows larger. Which is good since you gain an additional 3 minion types as the game progresses.

Are there spotty bulbears?

@BenBrocka I don't think so, but there are bloodthirsty unicorns!
Of course, a major staple of the Overlord series is deciding exactly HOW evil you are.

So you can be just modestly evil?

I didn't care for overlord, but then again I don't like pikmen, so...

@agent86 Shun the non-believer

3:10 PM
pikmin?
who cares, I hate it.
@BenBrocka shuuuuuun

@agent86 Shun

@BenBrocka Yes. For example, you don't HAVE to pillage the town. Or burn down the forest.
(but it sure is a lot of fun. ;P)
The second game replaces the Corruption system with the Domination/Destruction system.
Because in the second game, you end up taking control of several cities... just the how is up to you (mind control the leader or destroy the leader?) Oh, and you can also mind control or kill the citizens, but those are optional quests.

@agent86 Exactly the kind of thing I would expect from my nemesis.

@BenBrocka I was trying, and failing, to explain Gravity Rush to @RavenDreamer. He has a Vita and should play it. I just couldn't explain why. >_>

3:29 PM
Because awesome? Because the visual style in-game and the comic style of the cutscenes are brilliant? Because the game world is surreal and amazing? Because it's free with PS+ right now and it's pretty dumb to not have PS+ when games like Gravity rush are free with it?

@Fluttershy Meh, just hack into his PS Vita and install it for him. Delete all his other games for good measure.

Q: My Hats Are Floating Away!

GnomeSliceIf you start with a full sized window and then shrink it, this is what happens... It also works in reverse. I haven't tried any other browsers yet; this was achieved using Chrome. Help!

@Lazers Pretty sure this is off topic since ZBots are a server thing. An illegal server thing at that, since they are ripped from Counter-Strike: Condition Zero.

Zbots (or Z-Bots) are small action figures that were made by Galoob and first released in 1992. Galoob released four series of Zbots from 1992 to 1994. Galoob also created a number of Zbot vehicles alongside the figures. The heroes were the ZBots (Designed to Defend!). The villains were the Voids (Made to Menace!). Each side has their own logo, usually imprinted on each robot's torso, although some do not have a visible logo. The Z-Bots' logo is a "Z", while the Voids' is a stylized "V". Originally, each Zbot design came in two different color sets, each listed as an individual charact...

@GraceNote That's not the ZBots he's talking about.

This is all I thought about when I saw that question.

4:03 PM
@GraceNote Those are definitely cooler Zbots.

I still have so many.

Okay, I'm going to be a bit selfish here. This needs a little more attention:

4:06 PM
@Powerlord Python

@fredley if I know code, he'll introduce bugs just to spite you

ST2 SFTP had gotten fucked up, and wasn't overwriting my remote urls.py

@Powerlord Huh, almost went "Wait, @AnnaLear writes for... this webnews place I never heard of?"

Who wants to bet Amazon fired that person?

4:08 PM
@MBraedley No, we have the odd flaming row, but on the whole my relationship with code is pretty stable
<3 code really

@Powerlord we got affected by that too

Somehow, I got the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Casino Night zone music stuck in my head. >:/

@Powerlord Generally getting any Sonic 2 music stuck in your head isn't a terribly bad thing.
Except Hill Top Zone.
That stupid siren.

That's dumb, get the Chemical Zone or Metropolis zone music stuck in instead

@Powerlord You got Mystic Cave Zone stuck in my head as a result of this.
@BenBrocka I would've largely preferred Metropolis Zone.

4:12 PM
@StrixVaria HEY! I like Hill Top Zone!
Its music, anyway.

> Validating device, please wait...
Youve been validating for half an hour now

it really wants to be sure it's valid

Let's try restarting it...

@StrixVaria I thought Sega sued apart everything to do with that

4:14 PM
@BenBrocka No clue, but the music they did for it is pretty cool.

@BenBrocka I believe it fell apart on it's own accord.

(sigh) all that for "Your device is up to date". I'm giving up.

Spring Yard Zone is best sonic music.

Oh no it was sonic fan remix I'm thinking of: sonicfanremix.com though it appears to still exist. I mean it's the game I was thinking of, don't see a lawsuit though

4:18 PM

So, anyway, is Sonic Unleashed as bad as they say?

Robotnik's theme from Sonic 3 was the best, actually.

I know Sonic 2006 is thanks to Game Grumps

@Powerlord 'sonic the hedgehog' is terrible. My dad got it for PS3. It's really bad.

@Powerlord I assume so, I played sonic '06 so I never bought another 3D sonic game

4:19 PM
@GnomeSlice Game Grumps have spent nearly 40 10-minute long episodes playing through it.

I'm getting a desire to play Sonic.

@Powerlord Hahahaha ouch.
Sonic Adventure 2: Battle is the best 3D Sonic game, and will always be the best 3D Sonic game.
No contest.

@BenBrocka I skipped everything between Sonic Heroes and Sonic Colors. Sonic Generations was pretty good.

@GnomeSlice Sonic Adventure was pretty solid, though.

@Powerlord Sonic Heroes was better than I was expecting.

4:20 PM
I never played the one you mentioned.

@GnomeSlice What if I liked the original Sonic Adventure better? (Except the Big the Cat stages)

@Wipqozn I'm starting to want to play more XCOM.

@Powerlord Are you kidding me, those were the BEST stages.

@Powerlord I just pretend those stages don't exist.

Also, then you'd be wrong.

4:21 PM
Speaking of which, I need to go back and play Sonic Colors since I heard it was actually good.

I'm seriously going to need to pick up my Dreamcast soon.

@Powerlord I haven't played it yet, but I've heard it was good too.

Replay Skies of Arcadia and Sonic Adventure and Grandia 2.

@StrixVaria EEee, Skies of Arcadia!

Sonic stuff for PC was on sale during the Steam sale.

4:22 PM
@Powerlord Pass.

@StrixVaria The first Grandia was fantastic.

Sonic 1-3, Knuckles, Adventure 1 and 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic Generations iirc

I own the second, I think, but I don't believe I've played it.

@fbueckert Never played the first one, but the second one is really amazing.

I've also heard the latest Sonic racing game (Transformed or whatever) is what Mario Kart 7 should have been.

4:23 PM
Anyone ever play AVSEQ?
It's $1.24 and sounds vaguely interesting.

Too bad I'm waiting for the PC version so I can play as the character "Team Fortress" (no, I'm not kidding)

@Powerlord the cart is just a pile of hats

@BenBrocka That'd be funny, but there is actually gameplay footage.
Although it looked like not all assets were there in the gameplay footage.

@Powerlord boo

For instance, sound assets were generic for most of them (Pyro drives the car mode, so the one you'll see 90% of the time, sounds were definitely WRONG for that)

4:25 PM
> You hear a distant "Zot".

For reference, it switches which teammate is driving when vehicles change... Heavy drives the hovercraft, Spy drives the plane. Also, their super move appeared to be missing from the game.
Then again, the person playing also had to hex edit the driver selection on the PC's beta version to even play as Team Fortress, so...
btw, if you haven't heard Sonic CD's music, I highly recommend it. Both versions of it, actually, as it had different soundtracks in Japan/Europe and North America.

@SaintWacko That sounds like ADOM.

The Steam version of Sonic CD actually has both sets of music (you can choose which it uses), but the vocals for the Japanese version were removed due to licensing issues.

@Powerlord I had sonic CD but just couldn't get into it

(No more "toot toot Sonic warrior" :( )

I've found a few games have weird-ass lyrics in japanese versions of games

Q: What game is this PvP comic referencing?

ZachI'm very curious: what game are they playing in today's PvP comic?

@BenBrocka You'll... notice I mentioned the music not the game. Because although the game had a good idea (traveling between multiple versions of the same level), it was somewhat poorly executed.

Woo, someone commented on my video.

Side note: Holding up and hitting the button does a run rev-up in Sonic CD, which makes it easier to switch times after hitting one of the Past or Future signs.

4:33 PM
@AshleyNunn You might like Sonic Chronicles.

@GnomeSlice That's the DS RPG, right?
Oh yeah, if anyone here hasn't played Sonic Generations, one of the quirks is that the first Act of every stage is played as classic Sonic (and mostly 2D) while the second Act of every stage is played as modern Sonic (and mostly 3D). With their respective abilities. Also, you're playing through versions of classic levels.
The first level being (of course) Green Hill Zone.

I couldn't get into the 3D courses
I just wanted to play more classic zones

Are the stripes on my gravatar more distinct now at the smallest size on chat
Hmmm, better, but not very

Not enough drama in here. Time for a passionate argument about bringing back !

@YiJiang'sEvilClone It looks like a gradient.

@Sterno Here, rage about this

4:59 PM
@YiJiang'sEvilClone A little. I just noticed what it was

@fbueckert Meh

@Lazers I'm surprised this question wasn't more controversial

I like it with

@GraceNote It does, unfortunately. It's actually just two slightly curved stripes running down the length of the gravatar
@murgatroid99 Shhhhh :P

@YiJiang'sEvilClone I expanded it after noting that, just to see what it should've looked like.

5:04 PM
@Powerlord Yep.
Anyone here know of a good app for printing from Android?

@YiJiang'sEvilClone I was surprised I hadn't noticed it earlier, and then I saw the chat message saying that you changed it

@murgatroid99 I think it's like that question asking about what game was being played in some popular video. Whatever resolution we reached on that applies to this one as well, so people know the drill, I guess.

@GnomeSlice Copy the file off your device onto a computer and print from there?
Android devices obviously can't connect directly to printers using USB

@murgatroid99 WE CAN'T KNOW UNLESS THE ARTIST SPECIFICALLY STATES IT!!!!!!!!!

@YiJiang'sEvilClone That's a pain in the ass though. I'm looking for an app for printing over wifi. I've found a bunch that I'm going to try, but if someone has a suggestion that would be much less painful.

5:06 PM
There's also Google Cloud Print, but that requires the printer to support it google.com/cloudprint/learn

@YiJiang'sEvilClone I'm pretty sure you can do cloud print through a computer

@murgatroid99 Ah yes, there's instructions here: support.google.com/cloudprint/answer/1686197?rd=1
A computer will still be needed though.

euuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I need something, not sure what it is

5:09 PM
@YiJiang'sEvilClone Yep, it seems to work

there is definitely a lacking though

@kalina I suggest jelly beans.

Souls? Caffeine? Food? Water? Blood?

@GraceNote too much of a momentary sugar rush

@kalina Drink orange juice.

5:12 PM
I don't have any orange juice :(

@kalina Well, the blood of your enemies is always a good alternative

mmm blood

Orange juice jelly beans

If I ask for help on identifying the name of a game, do I get a ban?

Alternately, blood of your enemies jelly beans

5:14 PM
@ruda.almeida No. Though if you ask the question on the site, it will get closed. But as you are here, ask away.

@ruda.almeida No we won't suspend for that, but we don't allow it on the main Q&A. You can freely ask in here, though.

Thanks.

We may suspend you if it's a terrible game though, so ask cautiously.

don't be mean to the new guys

@kalina Then who can I be mean to?

5:16 PM
@RonanForman But he might not know it's a terrible game until we help him find out what game it is

It's a VERY old game (possibly 20 years or more), it's a monocromatic vertical scroller with a small shooter ship, that goes up one screen at a time, when you reach the top of the screen, or kill all the enemies on the current screen, the level changes. The name is something like "level [number]", or "stage [number]", if memory isn't failing me

@RonanForman gnomeslice, obviously

@murgatroid99 Hence the risk.

@RonanForman I should suspend you for threatening to suspend other people. insuspension.

@ruda.almeida Space invaders?

5:17 PM
@agent86 You're suspended for causing insuspension

@RonanForman in space invaders you don't go up the screen, the enemies go down

@BenBrocka we have to go deeper

@murgatroid99 exactly

That description fits any old vertical scrolling space shooter
And there definitely are a lot of those

@YiJiang'sEvilClone I bet you are right ;___;

5:18 PM
@YiJiang'sEvilClone I'm pretty sure that in a lot of them, the player's ship doesn't go all the way to the top of the screen (at least the ones I've seen)

@ruda.almeida what platform was this? (DOS?)

@kalina ಠ_ಠ

I do remember in one of the first levels, the enemies are bat-like (or seagull-like)
Yeah, DOS
And the name was something like level 32, or level 42, or level 54m or level whateverthenumber.
And each 5 levels or so there were no enemies and you just had to travel from bottom to top of the screen, avoiding hitting the narrow path

@ruda.almeida the name of the game?

@GnomeSlice <3

5:21 PM
@ruda.almeida THIS sounds familiar...
@kalina </3

@GnomeSlice :(

@ruda.almeida how did you get the game? did it come in a retail box? shareware?

I was 11 or 12 and my uncle had it on his CGA-green-screen XT.
Together with Alley Cat and Arkanoid

Wikipedia knows of no DOS game with a name starting with the word "Level"

Maybe I'm wrong about the name, but every other thing I'm pretty sure I'm correct

5:23 PM
@ruda.almeida Probably shareware - those are tough to find any copies or data on.

@ruda.almeida what year would this have been?

@JasonBerkan Yeah, I know, (completely unrelated to my question) I just found a CD from 1995 full of shareware yesterday and I was going to copy it, but it felt to the floor and cracked =/

@ruda.almeida actually, while I'm asking the questions, look at this list and just give me any info you've got :)

@agent86 Well, I played it on about 1993/94 but it could be much older
Alley Cat was from 84, and I played it the same year
@agent86 Hey, thanks for the link!

@ruda.almeida yeah, it just helps to be able to say "no games newer than 1993"

5:28 PM
Found it on mobygames
Thank you guys
Love you guys! =) =) =)
Happy new year
Been looking for it for a whole week

I'm glad you found your game

@ruda.almeida hey, congrats :)

Though, this is the perfect example of why we don't allow these questions on the main site

I know

@ruda.almeida Those are some sweet graphics.

5:30 PM
I was not anywhere close

@murgatroid99 I know, I have read a few articles/questions on meta and on the blog.

hey chat

@JasonBerkan The thing is uglier than my memory had told me, maybe it's the color instead of the green-on-black I was used to... Ugly anyway, damn you affective memory
@JohnoBoy Hey john
Is there a way to make DOSbox emulate green/black CGA?

...now this question could very well go on the site itself :)

@ruda.almeida shudder - I had a friend in the 80s who played all the Sierra quest games on a green and black monitor.

@JasonBerkan Ages ago, I played text-based adventure games on an MSX connected to my TV. One of them was in Spanish. I don't even speak spanish.

@ruda.almeida There should be a Hercules option in DOSBOX.conf. Try that.

@JasonBerkan Thanks!

Though that will just be two color - it may be black and white.

I could use some help identifying an old Atari game
I mean a 25 year old game or so. Anyone here had Atari PCs 30 years ago? ;)

@ruda.almeida I believe pressing F11 will cycle between color modes if you set dosbox to hercules. I think dosbox does green, brown, and black.

@JohnoBoy I had one 20 years ago (at that time, consoles were a luxury where I live)
@JohnoBoy And over time I had about 25 cartdriges I guess

@JohnoBoy I am always willing to take a shot at identification. any info from the ITG blog post would be appreciated.

5:37 PM
Well
it was a very simple game, kinda like the "endless runners" of our time

@JohnoBoy @agent86 is talking about this post: blog.gaming.stackexchange.com/2012/08/…

I answered an itg about The Fennels' Figure Math on the site once. I was so proud of myself.

@JohnoBoy All video games 30 years ago were simple...

@JasonBerkan I remember Blueprint having some depth

5:40 PM
The game I'm trying to find had you playing a man running left to right while obstacles were coming at him (from the edge of the screen? maybe the character itself moved?), you had to jump above them

Probably not Pitfall?

it was a very simple game, but I played it as a 3-4 year old kid so I have somewhat nostalgic feeling about it

being one of the few games I could manage at that age
@ruda.almeida Nah, much more simplistic. I think the player character was much bigger

Bobby Goes Home?

http://blog.bytequeeugosto.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/bobby.jpg

5:43 PM
I played it on an Atari 600/800XL

@JohnoBoy Are you sure it's not Pitfall?

Oh. I had an Atari 2600
Is it compatible?

@GnomeSlice Yes

In my country when people says "Atari", everyone assumes Atari 2600.
Dunno about the rest of the world

I've known pitfall for quite a while, the game I'm looking for is much simpler
@ruda.almeida The 600/800XL are even older, they're keyboard based models

5:46 PM
@GnomeSlice This should be interesting. You enjoyed that. The unexpected is our normal routine. Congratulations - you just destroyed the Enterprise.
When foreplay goes wrong

@BenBrocka Ahahahahahaha

The Atari 8-bit family is a series of 8-bit home computers manufactured from 1979 to 1992. All are based on the MOS Technology 6502 CPU and were the first home computers designed with custom coprocessor chips. Over the following decade several versions of the same basic design were released, including the original Atari 400 and 800 and their successors, the XL and XE series of computers. Overall, the Atari 8-bit computer line was a commercial success, selling two million units through its major production run between late 1979 and mid-1985, a total of around 4 million units. History ...

I'm sure everyone is done with it by now, but I got XCOM for Christmas, and it is seriously messing up my nights. Great game.

13 year production run? That's crazy for a computer

5:50 PM
@agent86 Will look over that. I wonder what's WOT problem with that site

Aw... crnch.it is gone. =[

NOOOOOOOOO!

@JohnoBoy no idea what WOT is.

I was on Zot 5 and died :(

Call me weird, but I don't like mainstream games and prefer stuff like Samorost, Crimson Room, Windosill, Zen bound, osmos, limbo...

5:51 PM
@agent86 It's a Chrome plugin that collects user rating about poor sites and displays warnings beside links

@agent86 In this case, Web of Trust

@JohnoBoy mkay. well, I've no idea why it's problematic :)

They should call it WOTs all dis den

@agent86 Says the site has been reported to host malware

well, my "clan" is called WOTS, so I get confused.
@JohnoBoy shrug if you can describe the game in more detail, I can look at the screenshots, but there's probably 20 of them listed.

5:55 PM
@JasonBerkan It is seriously good.

@agent86 The closest I could find is this, gury.atari8.info/details_games/4310.htm release date seems in line with the age I remember it, I played it in black & white and my memory could be fuzzy
I'm gonna try and find videos of it in motion and see if that's it

@JohnoBoy wow, yeah, seems like smurfs would be something you'd remember...

@agent86 I love that people are using the comments to ask for game identification there

man, I am on an answer roll today.
I may cap. I don't think I've capped in a long time.
@BenBrocka yeah, I really should figure out how to turn comments off on those posts.

@agent86 It's probably an option in Wordpress
