@Wipqozn I found the blog of your long lost tortoise cousin.

4 hours later…
09:43
@MadaraUchiha hey
have you noticed that in the users page
singerofthefall has x reputation
but if you click to see his profile he always has x+101
?
when usually we only have x+1 on our page
what sort of bug is that?
@JNat No, take note that you're viewing what people did this week
@MadaraUchiha ah, that's it then
Hmmm, nope, we're viewing the month
Very weird indeed.
09:56
tell me something
regarding references you provide on your answer
@JNat I asked for Manga references.. not wiki references. we tend to loose context where that information actually came from if we just rely on wiki references. Next thing you know we start getting unreliable references and the site credibility is hurt. — MozenRath 9 mins ago
MozenRath does not like that my reference is a wiki rather than a chapter or databook
but I think this does not make my answer worse, since I cite my references
am I thinking about this the wrong way?
@JNat The problem with referencing the wiki, is that it's not "canonical"
I understand that
Instead, referencing the manga is factual and final.
Of course, referencing to wiki is better than no reference at all.
Hey @MozenRath
10:00
but since I cite that my reference is a wiki, then it is up to you to find that trustworthy or otherwise, no?
@MozenRath hey
hi @MadaraUchiha
@MadaraUchiha that was my point
if any better reference pops up, I'll add and edit my answer accordingly
it is better than no reference at all
but the wiki is the more reliable reference available
but i think it is ok to poke for chapter references than to leave it at that
10:01
atm, at least
@MozenRath That's correct. The beauty is, that you can edit it yourself and add it, in case the original answerer did not.
@MozenRath the thing is that in the part that matters to the answer, the wiki does not state chapter references
@MadaraUchiha Yes, if you find anything more trustworthy or important or relevant to the answer, simply add it yourself
how do i find the actual chapter when I do not know where the information came from myself
@MozenRath agreed, but that is exactly my problem
see the thing is i dont like to get answers that come from just reading wikis rather than the actual manga
because then you cant think of it as complete
10:04
@MozenRath The wiki's articles are most often very accurate. And they often contain manga references themselves too.
@MozenRath Somebody should make an editable wiki manga.
@Mechanicalsnail There're wikis for most animes..
@MadaraUchiha No, not a manga wiki, a wiki manga.
@Mechanicalsnail Now I'm confused.
i know but not all the info is referenced by manga chapters there
10:06
@MozenRath I understand that, but the wiki does not reference anything regarding that 'retaining physical damage part'. However, the fact that Kabuto can modify the technique in order to choose the body's age is somewhat implied, since he was able to do it with Madara
@MozenRath How effective is Japanese OCR now?
so you see some comes and writes something on a wiki and it might be wrong
You could scan the whole thing and search.
It should get dialogue (though not sound effects).
I have raised a meta question about this
maybe we can take discussion there for everyones benifit
@MozenRath, you realize that we can't recheck all manga chapters to find the exact reference each time we answer a question, right?
10:11
@MozenRath The point is, you can't expect every answer to be ideal. Sometimes, we cannot remember the exact chapter/page (remember, in Naruto there're over 600 chapters). The Wiki provides a concise summery, which often includes any information you seek.
Instead of focusing on the reference source, focus on the information given to you in the answer.
The information in that case is correct, whether it came from the manga or the wiki matters less.
Anything else, @MozenRath?
@Mechanicalsnail you know, meta posts do not generate reputation (for some reason), there's no point at making them CW.
@Madara, they don't generate rep until the site is released (in both betas the reputation is shared between the main and the meta). But a community wiki answer explicitly allows everyone to edit it ;)
@MadaraUchiha Edit it.
@Mechanicalsnail I honestly believe that with the "suggested edit" feature introduced, there's very little point to the CW feature.
11
Q: Should we reconsider the position of Community Wiki posts?

Madara UchihaWell, I wasn't here at the time, but from what I understand, suggested edits are a relatively new feature. Before that, people would use Community Wiki to designate posts to be edited easily by low-rep users. Today however, with suggested edits, virtually anyone can edit any post, given his edit...

@MozenRath I've edited my answer, to include a chapter reference and a note on the wiki reference
@MadaraUchiha No suggested edits on Meta sites.
10:24
@Mechanicalsnail Can't argue with that.
thanks guys
sry had to go for work
@MozenRath, yea that's always annoying...
@SingerOfTheFall I am currently in class....
also annoying
10:40
@MadaraUchiha Here it is
@MadaraUchiha lol

Q: should wiki references be allowed?

MozenRathI think it is very important that we allow only Manga references in the answers to any questions. I think that wiki references tend to loose context of the situation where the information came from. This may even lead to pple starting to answer with really unreliable sources as references and thi...

The butterfly is pretty slow... took it almost a hour
@SingerOfTheFall It updates periodically.
10:57
@MadaraUchiha, I was always wondering, does Sharingan help to debug code faster?
@SingerOfTheFall It does, actually.
@MadaraUchiha, I envy you then :P should probably get one for myself.
Also, sitting like this increases that ability further by approximately 40%.
@MadaraUchiha lol before clicking I saw where you were going with this lol
what about looking on code like that?^
11:02
@SingerOfTheFall Nope.
@MadaraUchiha, good, I would definitely look weird...
Do you know any furigana inserters for Firefox?
I've tried Itadaki, but it causes my browser to crash...
@SingerOfTheFall Hyouka?
@Mysticial, yes
@JNat, what about this one?
11:11
I'll try it, thanks
but I think the problem is the html ruby add-on
11:21
@SingerOfTheFall yeah, it crashes anyway
11:46
@SingerOfTheFall: I found one that works, it's called furigana injector
Does anyone have a good kanji parser/translator plugin for Chrome?
I'm using Rikaikun, but it doesn't work in all cases.
12:00
well, see you all later
@MadaraUchiha I don't know any
:D
12:11
おっすみなさん
Nee... is Soul Eater good? ^___^

1 hour later…
13:26
@Mochan 久しぶり
@Mochan I heard it is, never saw it though, have it downloaded an ready :P

2 hours later…
15:30
@MadaraUchiha: do you know other mythological influences in naruto?
16:25
@JNat Yeah
Orochimaru Tsunade and Jirayia is a known store
Also, Susano'o vs Yamata no Orochi, which was displayed with Itachi vs Orochimaru
Not to mention all of the Sharingan jutsu

3 hours later…
19:34
@MadaraUchiha Yeah, I also knew those
20:16
@MadaraUchiha do you think it would make a good question? To ask for mythological inspirations for naruto?
or could that be too vague a question?
@JNat ...are list questions allowed here? If not, I would say it's not a good question to ask.
4
Q: How are the bijuu adapted from real mythology?

Madara UchihaI know that the nine-tails exists in many anime series (The notables are Naruto and Pokemon), as well as I also know that the two-tails is adapted from Japanese mythology (The Nekomata, a cat with a split tail). Does this convention apply to all/most other Bijuu?

@GorchestopherH this question asks for a list-type answer, but not off-topic
I believe the only problem with list-type questions are the ones that are overly broad
questions like "I've just finished watching X. What series are similar to this one?" are the type of list the we should watch out for
at least that is what I understood
@GorchestopherH and both here
5
Q: What kinds of questions should/shouldn't I ask here?

Madara UchihaWhat are the kinds of questions I can ask here? Which questions are considered good and on-topic questions on this site? On the other hand, what kinds of questions shouldn't I ask here? Which questions are considered off-topic, and out of the scope of this site?

and here
2
Q: How to write a good question, or improve quality of an existing question?

SingerOfTheFallHow do I ask a good question? How do I improve my questions so they are not down-voted and/or closed? Why was question XXX closed? What can I do to improve the quality of my questions?

nothing is referenced that would lead me to think that this would be a bad/off-topic question
plus, there have been some questions that ask for the same type of answers that have not been closed
but I could be wrong
20:42
Asking "what are all the mythological roots used in Naruto" is a fairly huge, open-ended list
but would it be seen as off-topic or not-constructive?
even if it was a CW maybe?
That's why I asked if list questions were legal here. They typically aren't.
@JNat “not a real question”, generally, because it's too broad
@Gilles I see
20:43
@Gilles yes, I understand.
@GorchestopherH it's not so much whether they're legal, as whether SE works for this type of question
Almost everything in everything is based on something previous to it, usually cascading back to antiquity or legend. So a huge loose list sometimes viewed as a poor fit for a Q and A site.
for LIST ALL THE FACTS, there's TV Tropes
so maybe if it were something like "are all sharingan jutsus inspired by japanese mythology?" it would be better
right?
@Gilles By "legal" I of course mean "have people decided it fits or not". There are guidelines somewhere.... I don't know what they are for here.
20:45
@JNat yup: if you concentrate on a specific element, it's reasonably scoped
@JNat I would think so.
like Amaterasu, being based on the Sun goddess "Amaterasu" whose fire consumes all and is never quenched. Etc...
ok. thank you both
:D
or Susano-Oh, which is based on the god warrior and slayer of the great demon Orochi
@GorchestopherH yeah. they really are all based in japanese mythology
susano'o, amaterasu, tsukuyomi, kotoamatsukami, etc
@JNat Right... Some are very obvious. Don't do yourself a disservice asking something you already know will be glaringly obvious with the first result of a google search.
20:51
oh, I meant to ask:
would you like the chatroom to have a feed of questions tagged anime on other sites?
Oh hey... Giles, you're "The Doctor" right? Didn't accept my answer yet? C'mon!
Science Fiction and Fantasy and Movies and TV get anime questions, presumably they're interesting to people who read this chatroom
@GorchestopherH No, I'm Gilles
ah... some other "G" named person is also "The Doctor" then...
did you mean Neal?
Haha, yes, sorry. Rhymes with Gilles, that's where I was confused.
20:55
@Gilles I guess that would be good promotion right?
@JNat it wouldn't promote Anime and Manga, no
ah
I misread
I thought you were asking about feeds of anime questions on other sites
we can post some Anime and Manga questions in the Science Fiction and Fantasy chatroom, if there are a few tags to select on-topic questions
but what you meant earlier is that there are some anime question in SF&F
yes, and the people who hang out here are likely to be interested by those
20:58
yes
One way to promote Anime and Manga would be to make an ad on Science Fiction and Fantasy
I guess that would be nice
I've gotta go

Q: Community Promotion Ads - 2013

Grace NoteIt's been about a year now, so it is now time for the reboot of the Community Promotion Ads! What are Community Promotion Ads? Community Promotion Ads are community-vetted advertisements that will show up on the main site, in the right sidebar. The purpose of this question is the vetting proces...

21:12
@JNat note that I didn't ask about "How does naruto adapt the jap mythology"
I asked about the very specific case of the Bijuu.
We should design something as well
@Gilles Perhaps with a mascot anime character?
21:37
Is there anyone?
Oh hey. I was working on a Community Ad for SciFi. :)
=)
Need a hand?
I think it's working, but an opinion won't harm.
:P
What do you think? Impressions?
I think I'll post it on the site and see what people think about it.
@Alenanno problem with alchemy is that it's not unique to Fullmetal Alchemist
21:51
@MadaraUchiha Yeah, but it's ok to refer to one anime only.
I've noticed they asked some questions about it.
22:06
@MadaraUchiha Is that the only problem you found?
@Alenanno it might be more effective to link to a specific, popular question that can draw people in
4
You mean in the "link" or in the sentence?
@Alenanno both
For the link it might be

Q: Why does an alchemist need a transmutation circle?

VegerAs a follow up, but another subject, of my question about equivalent exchange part of the alchemy laws. Why do (most) alchemists require a transmutation circle? Does any circle suffice or does an alchemist require a specific type for each (type of) job? At least the size seems to matter...

that picture would be fine for a question about alchemy
22:11
I think that one fits pretty well.
I'll be thinking of a more apt question.
22:45

Q: Should anime/manga influence questions be allowed?

kuwalyI just saw Has the "It's over 9000!" meme spread back to Japan? and was trying to figure out if this is on-topic. It is about anime but only in the sense that it is asking about anime's influence in Japan. Should questions about anime/mange memes or anime/manga's influence in diffe...

@MadaraUchiha I was thinking of doing a community ad where you compel the viewer with your tsukiyomi. The tag line could be something like: "This is the community you are looking for!"
@Krazer What do you think of the ad I did?
@Krazer Maybe with Sishui's eye.
@Alenanno I think a link to that question, with that banner would be perfect.
It has a great answer too
@Alenanno it not bad. But if it wasn't for the bottom line, it could almost pass for a Chemistry.SE ad. I recommend using a sans-serif font for the tag line. It makes the letters stand out more.
@Krazer Chemistry? With a glowing alchemic circle? :P
22:58
As Madara-sams noted it's a bit generic. It could apply to scifi, too
I do like the design nice job with the circle
I didn't do the circle. :)
That's the human transmutation circle
Are you planning on bringing me back to life proper, so that I can take over the world? :P
Red on black was a nice touch
@MadaraUchiha Never! :P
Glory to Madara-sama!
23:01
Don't support the evil! :P
@Krazer lol
@MadaraUchiha Ahah
23:14
Hey @Pureferret
Welcome
@Krazer Nice idea about the eyes... I might try it.
23:40
hey there
Hey @JNat
@Alenanno: I liked your add
@JNat Thanks!
@Alenanno and I also thought that Madara's idea of one with shisui's eye would be nice
23:56
@JNat It's cool, but SVG can't really catch the pattern in the background of the eye
@MadaraUchiha what pattern?
in the manga it's just that, but in black and white
