@Alenanno It's not bad it's about a what happens to a boy when his ship is wrecked and it's stranded on a life boats with wild "animals"
@Krazer I suppose it's based on some asian story, isn't it?
My friend from college did pre-vis/post-vis for the movie
@Alenanno the author of the original book is Canadian, the protagonist is Indian
@Krazer I continuously fail tonight. :P
@Alenanno There's a lot of spiritual and religious themes, so it's not easy to guess at first glance ;3
Have you seen it?
00:19
Yes.
I stayed after to see my friend's name in the credits, too.
He's famous xD imdb.com/name/nm4284947
Are you serious? lol
About the friend, yes. The famous part, no.
Hm. I just realized that Cybersix is an cartoon made by a Japanese studio, adapted from an Argentinean comic book series, with a Canadian cast, for Canadian and Argentinean audiences.
That's quite a mix...
00:35
Indeed.
01:27
Congratulations on the public beta, Anime & Manga Stack Exchange!
Hey @Mochan :)
おっす~元気ですか
元気、あなたは?
@Alenanno 元気です~
01:34
Is "バカのカタカナ” a valid sentence?
Baka no katakana
I am not sure... :P but it sounds weird to my non-native ears.
lol
but I might be terribly wrong
:P
I don't think it is >P
XD
Are you going to nominate yourself as a mod?
Do you know any good J-PopxDubstep mashups
@Alenanno Oh.. should I?
Uhm no :P I don't even know what that is
01:36
;A;
@Mochan Well, only if you want. I was just wondering. :P
@Alenanno I think I may... I don't think I'll become one, though. I'm not that popular >o<
@Mochan It's not a matter of being popular :P
Oh no. I am so not nominating myself. That's scary >.>
ahah
:P
01:38
Plus, if there are only three spots - I could name 3 people who are already going to get it despite my efforts.
Who knows.
U_U
lol
I don't know what to do... ;___;
ahah
Hm~
Anyway, I gotta go, it's late 'round here. :) sorry I'd stay but... :D Goodnight!
01:40
お休みなさい
おやすみ!
I think I'll wait until the real election FWIW
02:08
@Mochan I've heard of カタカナバカ being used
As in 日本人はカタカナ馬鹿
@Krazer I see. That probably makes more sense. I hope you get mod btw :3
@Mochan Why thank you~
@Krazer ^^
@Mochan Your use of バカのカタカナ is probably also correct, but did you intend on バカ being possessive of カタカナ?
@Krazer Nah, just 'baka'. I think it's written in Katakana, is it not?
02:16
@Mochan katakana is probably best thought of as the Japanese italics
@Krazer Hm~
properly the hiragana (ばか) or kanji (馬鹿) is used. IMO katakana is just for emphasis or to make a word stand out, especially in anime and manga
@Mochan I recommend this book if you get a chance: books.google.com/…
Thanks ^^
It talks about Japanese way of using English. In particular, he goes into detail about the use of English loanwords in Japanese for advertising, packaging, pop songs, etc.
According to the author these English loanwords aren't really loanwords, but instead English inspired creations... in other words, Japanese are using English for their own purposes in ways which they can appreciate rather than copying the usage of native speakers
@Alenanno You might find the book enjoyable, too.
Very interesting! I'll check it out!
02:32
I just noticed that we've had 0 new questions (that are still open) in 12 hours

Q: Which mythologies or folktales inspired the stories in Mushishi?

grasshopperI read somewhere that the mangaka made footnotes at the end of each volume explaining what inspired each story. I've only seen the anime so I would like to know which mythologies or folktales, if any, inspired the stories in Mushishi.

That reminds me, if you haven't read and watched Mushiishi you should do that.
Like, right now.
That is the most recent one, and it's 12 hours old
Drop everything you're doing and just do that instead.
@Wipqozn Agreed. It's pretty amazing.
The only major complaint I have with the author is that he fails to make a distinction between English terms that are standard in Japanese and terms that a flavor of the month (fad-ish), I found that quite a few of the examples that he provides are a bit dated and probably not commonly used anymore. It would have been nice to make this distinction and to elaborate on the processes behind both forms of usage...
02:36
Oh, @Mochan, that reminds me, you should avoid accepting answers on discussion questions on meta.
1
Q: Are "What episode does [event] happen in [anime/manga]" like questions on-topic?

MochanIs asking about when a specific event happens in an anime or manga on- or off-topic? For example: In the NANA manga, when does Nana Komatsu break up with Shouji? In Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, when do the brothers find the Philospher's Stone? In Katekyo Hitman Reborn! the anim...

THis here for example. You accepted @Alenanno's answer before anyone else said anything, but it's now clear that community support is what I stated, which is they should be allowed. However, since you accepted an answer it is now sorted to the top and is the first thing users see.
@Wipqozn Have you looked the author's latest series, Suiiki?
@Krazer No sir.
How is ti?
Oh OK. Sorry, I am not familiar with the meta, really :3
@Mochan No worries :). I figure you weren't, so I just thought I'd let you know. Meta is very different than the main site.
@Wipqozn Hahaha thanks :)
02:39
An outcome on discussion question like your one usually isn't reached until a few days after all discussion on the topic has stopped, just to make sure all arguments have been heard and everyone has had a chance to vote and offer input.
@Wipqozn Pretty good very touching. All 12 chapters have been scanlated if you are interested.
@Krazer Only 12 chapters? Has my attention already.
@Mochan It's only questionable since it is not licensed :P
@Krazer Oh~ gomen ne, then
@Mochan I would buy it if they released it
:7349814 :O now everyone knows!! Quick hide it!
02:48
@Krazer No-one knows anything
I'm bored. Making nachos or lunch (T__T) bbs
@Mochan nacho salad go go go
@Krazer Great, thanks. I'll need to read this tomorrow.
If it's only 12 chapters I should be able to do it in one sitting.

9 hours later…
11:24
@Krazer That's not so weird for loanwords. :P
@Mochan @Wipqozn I fixed my answer.
@Alenanno encyclopedia*
Also, "What is Naruto's last name" should be closed as NARQ in my opinion.
Ops.
Try asking "What is a variable on PHP?" over on Stack Overflow, and see how that would be closed.
11:39
NARQ is chosen when another (GenRef) is not available.
That's the usual thing that happens.
So, it'd be GenRef, if it was there.
But the point is: are we sure to allow very basic questions? I'd say no.
@Alenanno No, of course not.
If this site really grows, they're going to be a pain. A real pain. Or pein. :P
It's part of Stack Exchange policy that questions should have a minimal amount of research put in them.
That's exactly what I said in my answer.
Perhaps now it's a better answer though.
@Alenanno Never, ever spell his name with an 'E' I hate it when people do that
11:41
lol
You brought me horrible memories from WikiAnswers
@MadaraUchiha lmao you wouldn't have gotten the joke otherwise. And by the way, his Japanese name is spelled like that.
ペイン = pein
:P
@Alenanno He should've called him Itami and be over with
Ahah
:P
By the way, @MadaraUchiha
have you seen this?
@MadaraUchiha By the way I forgot... Negative closed question self-delete. So no real need for deleting. :P — Alenanno 36 mins ago
questions*
@Alenanno I haven't.
While that's true, OP still should be aware of the fact that he's facing suspension if he keeps posting bad questions
That 30 days period also allows him to improve his question, and hopefully get some upvotes
11:49
Yes yes. But I meant on the deleting part (especially if you are a moderator).
Even though in this specific case, there's hardly a chance the question to be improved.
When I discovered that, I stopped deleting (except real bad cases).
@Alenanno Over on Stack Overflow on the tag, there are a lot of crap questions
Questions which are dupes of dupes of dupes
We usually delete those rather quickly.
lol :P
Duplication is awesome, it allows search engines find it more easily
But the plus becomes a minus when there are literally thousands of them.
11:51
:P
Yeah.
800 results :)
dies
The problem became so severe, we even wrote plugins to help us. Like chat members to quickly detect and close/delete those, or adding a pre-defined list to the duplicate selector, for very common duplicates
=)
Since this site is small, and new
I don't want to apply this strictness over it as well
Give people their time to improve and learn, and let the system do its thing if they don't.
After all, we have the auto-suspension for a reason.
@MadaraUchiha Let's suspend everybody!
12:18
Naruto's Anime is getting weirder and weirder by the episode...
It's a filler right now.
Who knows, maybe you didn't know.
How can I know what you know if I don't know what you actually know?
:P

Q: How to write a good question, or improve quality of an existing question?

SingerOfTheFallHow do I ask a good question? How do I improve my questions so they are not down-voted and/or closed? Why was question XXX closed? What can I do to improve the quality of my questions?

@Alenanno Well, I am reading the manga, remember?
What manga? And who are you? Who am I? Where is this?
:P
2 hours ago, by Alenanno
Who knows, maybe you didn't know.
I don't see how that answers my message. lol
@Alenanno Naruto, the most powerful ninja you know, Alenanno, Anime & Manga chat room.
Better? :)
14:14
Thanks, now I remember everything. But there seems to be wrong information.
:P
You're not the most powerful ninja!
@Alenanno You know anyone more powerful currently? :)
@MadaraUchiha Konohamaru. :P
@Alenanno It's true that Konohamaru is stronger than your average Anbu (seriously, they're supposed to be strong??), but I'm a bit stronger :)
14:29
~16 hours until the end of the world
It's the 21st already in parts of it. :)
But since the Mayans were a Mesoamerican civilization, they probably existed in what are now the Central and Mountain time zones in the US (so UTC -6 and UTC -7) :p
Good point @Krazer
By that reasoning, San Andreas Fault finally dumping the trash into the ocean and creating the Arizona Bay would already be the "the end of the world".
I was anticipating zombie meteor volcanoes everywhere, stars are winking out of existence like someone's tidying up and closing up the universe.
14:35
Im all for an apocalypse, especially if it creates a fallout situation with ghouls, talking trees, etc
14:49
AH I can still read @Krazer! :P
lol
hey there!
Hey @JNat
@Alenanno Curses! Foiled again!
15:06
@Alenanno how can we build this list I had proposed?
@JNat No idea honestly. :P
I also have no idea
because I do not know books on anime and manga
so I have no idea what to put there
(it is actually why I proposed the list)
:D
Perhaps we can start with the notable recent ones and work our way back? We can also link the light novel translation for those interested, too.
Maybe also include notable music? OP, ED, OSTs, etc
@Krazer what do you mean with light novel?
@JNat you mentioned "technical and theoretical details" of anime and manga, for those wanting to learn more about a specific series based off a light novel series, they might be interested read it to learn more about that particular series
15:18
:"Ranobe" redirects here. For the Madagascar locality, see Berevo-Ranobe. A is a style of Japanese novel primarily targeting middle and high school students (young adult demographic). "Light novel" is a wasei-eigo, or a Japanese term formed from words in the English language. Such short, light novels are often called or LN in the West. They are typically not more than 40,000–50,000 words long (the shorter ones being equivalent to a novella in US publishing terms), rarely exceed 200 pages, often have dense publishing schedules, are usually published in bunkobon size, and are often ill...
@Krazer I see
Basically, novels with some illustrations sprinkled in; a typical (serialised) book form.
@Krazer I think a list of resources like this would also be useful. But by "technical and theoretical details" of anime and manga I meant books on manga and anime
like this, for instances (which I just got from Wikipedia, I have no idea if it is good or not)
@JNat so reference books on anime/manga?
that is what I meant
but what did you have in mind/ understood from my proposal?
15:28
@JNat I was under the impression that it was a compilation of notable anime/manga serializations that have shaped, changed, or had significant impact in popular anime and manga culture... an overview of anime/manga so to speak
That could also be a part of the list I guess
we could structure it to include -reference books on anime and manga, -more informal works, -"an overview of anime/manga so to speak" (like you said)
and other things that would come up
@Krazer I actually do not know any books on anime/manga, so I have no idea where to start (also I don't have a lot of spare time nowadays)
What should the scope be? It's easy to go off in a tangent considering the scope of the material
Also who should the target audience be?
the target I guess is anyone interested in manga and anime
and with a list like you were saying could easily find other great anime/manga to go on
or to get started
or with the type of list I said understand more what is behind anime and manga
I think a getting started and "explain it like I'm five" guide should work to start us off
yeah
15:37
Just be careful to make sure that you don't get too rooted in the newer series (because they are fresh in the mind) that you forget about the older ones
I dont know alot of overview books, but i think series that have a significant impact on anime and manga like akira should be included
I don't like most of the reference books on anime/manga history and culture
@Krazer for newer series we wouldn't get into much detail
@grasshopper agreed
@Krazer I've never read one
but I read this one
@Krazer not many fans do
and I learned some interesting things
but this one is a lighter reading
15:41
so it will basically be a list of the most influential series with a few reference books?
@grasshopper my initial idea was to have something that would help people (and me) understand anime and manga
@grasshopper but it will basically be whatever the community wants/needs it to be
I'm iffy on reference books... Anime Encyclopedia is okay. I feel the art books are what stands out. The Studio Ghibli: The Art series is pretty decent (Nausicaa, Porco Rosso, and Spirited Away are the most notable ones). Lain: An Omnipresent in the Wired showcases some of Yoshitoshi ABe's fantastic artwork...
by the way is there a date for elections? so I know when to cast my vote
@Krazer how do the elections go down? this is my first time (on either side of one)
@JNat This is mine, too. I believe pro-temp moderated help out with the site until the site officially graduates Beta, then official elections are made for official mods.
15:52
@Krazer and ultimately pro-tem mods are chosen by who?
community or SE team?
@JNat the comunity
@Krazer alennano's post on meta says "the SE Team will pick up (usually 3) users to become Moderators"
@JNat based on community votes
@Krazer ah ok
Yo, mina-san
15:55
@JNat This might provide some better context:
@MadaraUchiha hey
24
Q: There's an election going on. What's happening and how does it work?

ben is uǝq backwardsThe community bulletin says that there is a moderator election occurring. How does the election work and how can I get involved? Return to FAQ index

This applies more to "official" elections
@MadaraUchiha thanks
16:03
well, see you later
bye
@JNat Bye~
16:21
@JNat I would suggest NOT to put any anime artbooks, or official manga/anime sites on the resources list
(there's no reasonable limit)
16:34
0
A: Resources to get started on the manga/anime universe

KiruwaI would propose the following categories for a resource list here: Legal online (English) anime sources Legal online (English) manga sources Links to anime/manga import companies Books about Anime/Manga as art or culture Indexing sites (this might be tricky... as most are fansub indexers... all...

Q: How can we attract more users to this site?

KrazerNow that we've made it out of private beta (congratulations to everyone involved!), we should focus on drawing in more people to help grow the site. What can we do to help promote this SE and attract more users?

2 hours later…
19:06
@Alenanno: re: fixed your question. I still disagree with you. Too basic is what down votes are for.
@Wipqozn fixed my question?
@Alenanno answer*
The one one the question we're talking about now, too basic.
I can certainly understand why EL&U may need GR, to avoid the site being filled with "What's the definition of X?", but I don't see it working on this site.
The site we most resemble is SFF, which recently removed the GR close reasons due to it just not working at all.
huh, the SE team still hasn't removed the GR close reason from SFF.
I think they decided to stop using it over a month ago now.
I am not pressing to add the GenRef reason, we may exist without it, but I think we should forbid too basic questions. Just that. :P Now I have to disappear. I'll be back later.
:P
@Alenanno and I think that's what downvotes are for. I think this is just one fo those situations where we just won't meet eye to eye.
Because I certainly understand your position, I just don't agree with it.
19:52
Honestly... GR as a close reason should require a link to the definition... and only include a very small selection of hosts. We could use it on JLU and accept... the yahoo.co.jp dictionaries, for example.
(That has the problem that you might encourage people to ask, since they do actually get an answer... but there are ways around that)
20:15
Yo
howdy
I'm not sure if anyone here is familiar with Ni No Kuni, but if not you should look into it. It's an RPG being developed by Level-5 and Studio Ghibli.
20:40
@Wipqozn I remember thinking I should try this when the Japanese version came out, but I never did get around to it.
How is the story? I remember thinking that apart from the animation it looks like a pretty typical JRPG, but that was just based on the trailer and one gameplay video.
@LoganM I haven't played it out. The game isn't released in NA until next month.
The combat looks fairly good. It's like a cross between pokemeon and the tales series.
@Wipqozn I played the demo at NY Comicon, definitely one of the better JRPGs as of late
@Wipqozn Ah I thought you had played the JP version. The combat looks pretty good, but I don't usually play RPGs for the combat system.
@LoganM it's similar to the whole tri-ace/tales battle system with its own little quirks
If you've played White Knight Chronicles, it plays out very similarly to that
@Wipqozn The DS version came before it but it was never localized
20:54
@Krazer I've played White Knight Chronicles, as well as a lot of the Tales games, so the battle system looks fine. What I'm more concerned with is the story, which looks sort of average. I typically only play through 1-2 games per year, and I usually choose more based on story than mechanics.
But if no one here has played the JP version, then I'll just have to wait until the NA release to get some idea of how it is.
There should be a demo out on the PSN store.
it's ~2.6GB I think
I personally like the demo.
@Krazer Really now? I might need to download that.
@Wipqozn Been out for about 2 weeks I think
Yeah since Dec. 4 according to IGN, for the US at least
21:10
lol I've been playing too many VNs, so when I saw 2.6GB demo my first thought was that it would probably last at least 15 hours.
Of course, that's still pretty big even by normal game standards, but for a VN it would be gigantic
Here's the behind the scenes stuff if you are interested:
I think there's a hard cap on how long you can play the demo
21:47
@Krazer Downloading it now (once my PS3 updates)
holy snap sony. Stop making my perform updates. IT's a pain in the ass.
Why do I need to jump through so many hoops to download a free demo.
Just have a "download" button. Don't make me go through a bunch of checkout pages.
This is terrible user interface design.
I'm tempted to never buy anything from sony again to punish them for having such terrible UI.
I might be overreacting though.
22:32
All I really want from the new store is for them to have a regular update time each week, I hate knowing a game is coming, but needing to check throughout the day to see if it’s available yet
Also they need a way to sort the download list. It's a depressing chore scrolling through a half decade of demos and DLC...
