I have inherited a tomcat application running on RHEL that connects to a local postgres database. We have a total of 8 servers in multiple states running this. Each server actually has two different postgres databases on it. Each day we switch back and forth from one database to the other and ...
@dan you're not wrong. I actually find myself being a bit more careful what I VTC these days, as I know i've been trigger happy in the past. It's a fine line to walk though, each time a borderline OT question goes past you know someone will use "but that question was allowed" as a justification for stretching things a bit further next time.
yeah. I've got less problems with being strict over things being OT and more problems with "DUMB QUESTION WHERE'S THE CLOSE BUTTON" (and like I say, I know I've been guilty of this myself)
video calling would be great on a phone. I'm not sold on it on a PC or even a laptop. If you're far away from family and friends and want to see them, then its better than nothing I suppose

The discussion related to using iSCSIcli as a tool to execute setup seems to have gone cold. I tried using the tool and was successful....or so i thought until I found that the relation between source nic and a specific connection was not static, fixed. after setting up I found that the souce n...
@RobM - Skype is easy enough to use for most, has a cool name, and great marketing/word of mouth and is free (for the most part). That's the appeal. But I agree with your critique. Personally, I think video chat is still very awkward. Until they manage to put the camera dead center behind the screen somehow you still end up talking to people that aren't quite looking at you.
@RobM Completely agree; but it was there first, and it works enough that it gained critical momentum. I was hoping MS was killing it off, but instead their focusing on it more. =[
@Cole My in-laws got Android phones over the weekend. So I set them up with all the stuff I've found over the last year that works really well. It's the same setup I've done for quite a few people now, and with a few tweaks here and there, everyone seems to like it. Well not my mother-in-law. She "got confused" by the digital clock with calendar and weather on the home screen. She wanted a 2x2 Analog Clock tile, with a 2x2 Yahoo Weather tile, and no date information. I still feel dirty.
@cole if you feel dirty now just wait until it randomly decides not to boot from the upgraded controller. Or you get an email from equallogic support on monday saying "You know that firmware that we emailed you about saying 'FOR GOD'S SAKE upgrade to this right now?' well... 'FOR GOD'S SAKE don't upgrade to it!'". Good times.
Anyone else becoming a fan of HP Networking gear? I haven't used their stuff in years but the demo and price points I've been seeing have my interested.
We are considering their 5820X switches and some 5406zl's. They seem to be so much cheaper than the Cisco gear or even the Juniper gear we currently use.
ProCurve gear, from my experience, has similar CapEx and dramatically lower OpEx than Cisco. I haven't had the chance to play with Juniper ever.
The transferable warranty is a huge plus too; you can buy used gear and it's fully warrantied (with some odd exceptions here and there). Along that same vein, the 54xx switches are pretty popular and you can find refurbish (HP calls it "Renew") equipment around very cheap.
nice job Tom...At first I thought you were saying you got 14.5k rep in December already alone. I was prepared to disable my account and walk away with my head hung low.
I know some people aren't allowed to buy "refurbished" equipment, but the stuff I've got all looks like new, works like new, warrantied like new, and costs half as much....
For some reason my VM I'm running nagios on gets like 0.5% packet loss, and nagios randomly reports my hosts as down when they aren't even though I set them to the "WAN" latency setting it comes with.
@Cole its not too late for you then.. Make sure you create an Alias name that you reply to
and when someone sends you an email directly tell them you will forward it to your colleague who will take care of them and forward it to that account.
@TheCleaner I want to throw my HP networking gear through a fan, if that's what you mean... Fucking hate it. Hate it like a hate a luser who needs their account unlocked 3 times a day. It's cheaper, sure, but it's annoying as hell, and having to completely relearn a networking CLI does not make me a happy chappy.
@HopelessN00b - blasphemy! Kidding...I haven't used their gear in probably 5 years. We are a decent size Juniper and Extreme and Cisco shop. I agree with relearning syntax though.
@HopelessN00b The only problem I have with HP's CLI is that it's similar to Cisco, enough to make you think commands might be the same... then you get "syntax error" and remember you're not on a Cisco device.
That's certainly not a technical problem with the gear though --> PEBKAC
@ChrisS I see it as a design flaw, honestly. Inventing your own standard when the guys with ~100% market share have a completely different one that everyone's used to.
@MikeyB Yeah, I know, but it is one of the top tags, and has no wiki whatsoever...
@HopelessN00b Those guys with way less than 100% market share (though that's a common misconception) have copyrighted, trademarked, and patented their interface to the point where making a duplicate of it is asking to be sued off the planet. In fact, you're probably in violation of some corporate conspiracy laws for even thinking about making a duplicate.
Also, for anyone not seriously considering Juniper and HP as contenders: During the 2011 analyst call, Cisco's CEO John Chambers called out several competitors by name, including Juniper and HP. A year and a half later, Cisco's stock price still hasn't recovered from that call.
I love my Juniper gear. It's great stuff. I just get frustrated when I call Sprint/AT&T/etc. with router issues and the first thing they ask is what kind of Cisco router I'm using.
Holy Crap this sucks! http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/12/14/shooting-reported-at-connecticut-elementary-school/
I'm not normally an advocate of overreactive security measures; but I can't quite understand why schools still don't have at least one security guard (seems like 1 guard per ~500 kids would make sense). Or metal detector vestibules with auto-locking doors (I've seen some banks installing these recently)
