@ErikDarling I just run two instances on the same machine
I suppose you could use Docker as well 🙄

yeah i could also chew glass
let's see which happens first

🤣
I installed an 2022 Express instance a week or so back for some question or other
I'm keeping it around for the time being

it's probably more trouble to uninstall it

Yeah, it uses hardly any space so whatever
I tried to learn to love local db for a while, but it irked me

like an electric toothbrush

1:37 AM
Bit like that
Except local db doesn't need charging. It doesn't make my teeth feel clean either though so

try rubbing some charcoal on it

For Halloween protection

you do have quite a candy habit

Not loving lollies can get one deported
Also having too low a blood alcohol level

if the candy doesn't get you, the red wine will

@PaulWhite Trigram searching, reused a lot of your code, but switched to indexed views instead of triggers, and changed the msTVF to an iTVF and removed the now unnecessary merge hints. dbfiddle.uk/usnfX6Io
Also improved the top-3 logic in order to get a top-n sort before rownumbering, rather than a sort-rownumber-top.
The plan looks very neat: split the search into trigrams and distinct them, index seek for trigram counts, top-n sort then row-number and pivot, then index seek the three trigrams and merge-concatenate the results, finally index seeking the main table.

3:02 AM
Right off to sleep, I'll leave to you upside-down folks to take a look, back in the morning/night/whatever.

@PaulWhite Morning. Any thoughts on it?

None
I'm busy with other things
But I'm happy you found something that worked for you

That's surprising. Wait, you have a job? I thought you worked Consultancy ©® for free :-)

I'm not busy with work, no
Various people have adapted that solution to their own requirements over the 5 or 6 years it's been up

10:34 AM
I actually did it as a side thing, didn't actually need it in prod. Just trying to see if it could be improved.
It's a cool idea anyway. I believe Postgres even has trigram indexes built-in

11:18 AM
I have surprisingly little time for random code chat on my wife's 50th birthday

Happy Birthday to Mrs. White.

@JohnK.N. Thanks. Good spot on the screenshots showing no log backup on that question btw, though it does make it a dupe of dba.stackexchange.com/questions/29829/…
Technically, her birthday ended 2h ago, but it's always a bit smeared out due to friends & family in different time zones

1:31 PM
@PaulWhite I'd have no objections if the question were to be marked as dupe.
I thought it might be a bit unique from the perspective that OP seems to be new in the DBA domain.
The duplicate Q & A is for a long running transaction. The current Q is because they aren't backing up the TLOG.
Same results in the end, but for different reasons.

@SeanGallardy can you please shoot someone at microsoft for me?

The guy on this Pluralsight course could not possibly overhype Docker more.

well pluralsight

which guy?

jon skeet on suicide watch

@ErikDarling They don't like guns, they prefer knives. Waiting for knife bans, personally. msn.com/en-us/news/crime/…
@JoshDarnell Did you join the cult Docker club yet?

> A witness yelled at the man to stop stabbing, and he ran off, police said.
this article is full of weird lines
> Once a search warrant was approved, police entered Cantrell’s apartment and arrested him.
like there's a trail of blood and they had his key fob entry

@JohnK.N. I don't think you read the dupe answers v closely
@ErikDarling Yes, that's true

4:38 PM
thank you for addressing my concerns
@SeanGallardy > I'd prefer to take the role offline first, personally.
becaaauuuuuuse?
(i'm not questioning it, but it would make a good edit to your answer)

@ErikDarling gotcha

voting ring activated
uh oh

hehehehehe

am i gonna make it?

most likely

4:42 PM
@JoshDarnell It's hard to know how to interpret that

she'll probably just ask paul if i'm right

who is a kate smith?

@SeanGallardy Not yet. On my way though.

@JoshDarnell I'm excited to see you be a pusher of Docker, super hard, like all the other docker heads.
Have you found your container and savior, Docker?

4:44 PM
Someone has to unload all those shipping containers
World needs more dockers

gotta move these color tvs

that's not working

oh well try downloading one

piracy is a crime

every once in a while i get the urge to try linux so i fire up a vm and then stare at it and realize i have even less to do on there than i do on windows

5:20 PM
you can use WSL

it all leads to the same thing
me not caring about linux

5:49 PM
windows is equally-infuriating so i suppose it's really all about familiarity i guess

6:18 PM
it seems weird that you can't manually drop statistics for a disabled index

6:28 PM
Shouldn't pick on the disabled

6:45 PM
oh my

does that mean you're finally about to post a squat video

@SeanGallardy Just wait!
I'm sure they'll win me over.
I'm easily influenced.

@ErikDarling Saturday is the next legs day. My gym buddy hurt her shoulder and probably won't be there, so probably no video.

you only do legs once a week?

@ErikDarling It's all I can manage right now with my schedule, it has to be a weekend as that's the only time I have.

6:53 PM
ah that sucks

I concur :(
Ideally I'd do something like Tuesday/Saturday split

i do u/l/u/l/DEADLIFTS

oh wow
How long is each session?
Right now I do:
Monday - Chest
Tuesday - Back
Wednesday - Tris
Thursday - Bis
Friday - Shoulders
Saturday - Legs
Sunday - Abs/Stretching/Active rest
I try to keep it to 1 hour, except legs where I will go for 2 or so

You're back on the 5x5 schedule?

6:59 PM
well
3x5 and 3x3 mostly
jeez i haven't updated that in a bit, the bench reps are wrong
does anyone else see the flaw in this post?

7:20 PM
Yes, but I'm wondering which one you're seeing first.

Here's one:
> However, what happen if we add an implict transaction in this script.
Among a few others I noticed, probably the one that jumped out the most

@ErikDarling The author? 😅

user image
I'm wondering how Erik keeps finding those - is he hate-following people?

@SeanGallardy Haha that's a good catch.

@Zikato czechs out

Flaws:

1. Covering a subject that has been covered so many times while offering no new perspective.
2. What's the point of doing 5 different loops of 10k?
3. Linking to an own version of sp_Who42 instead of WhoIsActive
4. Microscoping screenshot
5. Implicit transaction
6. Dragging an Azure into the blog post even though it plays no role.
So anyway, we got a new president

7:56 PM
@Zikato Is this good or bad?
or shades of gr(a/e)y?

good, I'm even a bit optimistic

:gasp:

but president holds little executive power. At least we won't have to be ashamed of him like the previous one.

Hey, chin up, there's still time for that to happen.

It also sparked some nice memes

8:05 PM
@JoshDarnell we’ll aside from that

8:26 PM
@Zikato the rca on the post is that the transactions aren't waiting on writelog, probably because he ran his garbage pail script while the transaction was still open, so the waits wouldn't be happening yet

8:37 PM
@ErikDarling yeah, that's much better than mine. I've missed the obvious because I knew what was supposed to happen

i should make a sock puppet account to comment on his posts

@ErikDarling I don't follow that. It seems to me like the RCA is right. You can cut down on transaction log activity (and WRITELOG waits) massively by using one explicit transaction vs. implicit transactions for each statement.
You have one begin tran log record and one end tran record, vs 10,000 of each.

but there are zero writelog waits for the transaction script
which makes no sense
> In this case, the WRITE_LOG will change to ASYNC_NETWORK_IO
i follow what you're saying, it's derivative of this q&a
121
A: Is it a bad practice to always create a transaction?

Kin ShahIs a bad practice to create a transaction always? It depends on what context you are talking here. If it is an update, then I would highly recommend using TRANSACTIONS explicitly. If it is a SELECT then NO (explicitly). But wait there is more to understand first : Everything in sql server is c...

8:54 PM
@JoshDarnell But he's using a point in time lookup at waits instead of collecting them over time like XE or sys.dm_exec_session_wait_stats

@Zikato I agree the way he presents the evidence is total garbage. I'm just saying that the conclusion that using an explicit transaction in a situation like that will reduce WRITELOG waits is correct.

it's also sort of wrong that all five insert loops are in one transaction, rather then the begin tran/commit being around each separate one

9:52 PM
Yeah that's cheating.

I swear if I hear "five nines" one more time, I'll fail over

What was the point of the five loops?

The number nine looks like a loop, innit
So five loops is to increase the application availability
Much better than four loops
also, four day work weeks are much better than the usual five; you can have a Friday when everybody else is having a Thursday

10:12 PM
Maybe he's paid per line of code

10:49 PM
@mustaccio I’m working on a zero day work week

11:12 PM
yes but is it a zero work day week?
Feb 26 at 21:17, by Erik Darling
It’s always Monday in The Heap
shouldn't it be "always Friday" then?
are you hiding something Erik?

Ask your mom

11:51 PM
Perhaps in your "culture" this kind of jokes is innocuous, but I wish you'd refrain from them

Jeez, my culture gets put in quotes
Pistols at dawn I suppose
