@DavidCarlisle -- Upside down, it turns into an apostrophe, but it remains symmetrical. Very nice. (Although it pains me to admit it.)

6 hours later…
6:20 AM
Hi sorry to disturb you again. But I think the LuaLaTeX one has some problems
The output is different from input.
Any ideas why it's happening?
Like instead of "ମୋର " it shows "ମ ୋର "
To put it in familiar terms, suppose I want to write "Schrödinger" but it shows "Shro (diaeresis)dinger"

6:35 AM
@PNDas your script probably needs HarfBuzz. Add [Renderer=HarfBuzz] after the setmainfont command

@UlrikeFischer still not working

6:58 AM
Yesterday I shared ctan.org/tex-archive/language/oriya?lang=en . And you said I have to manually install them. I'm having trouble where to put each folders.
As said in the readme, mf file in metafonts folder, tfm file in tex folder?

Woha! I recently earned the gold tikz-pgf badge and if I now vote to close a question it will be closed immediately? I guess, I need to "close wisely" now ...

7:14 AM
Ah, not always ... I somehow need to lookup the rules ...
Aaah, so this only holds for duplicates. For other reasons to close, it still needs 5 votes ...
Question answered. Sorry for the self-talk

7:42 AM
@PNDas then ask a proper question on the main site with a small example. Don't link to an external overleaf project.
@PNDas I wouldn't use that. It is from 2003, probably unmaintained and there are only bitmap fonts. If you have problems nobody will be able to help you. And as David said non-latin fonts are complicated with pdflatex.

Is it possible to modify this answer tex.stackexchange.com/a/561540/279956 ??
It's very similar to what you have suggested

@PNDas you should use the answer button in the chat (on the left of a message) if you answer to create a reference.

Okay.
When I get tagged here, it creates a sound like a spring is released. I got scared that something happened to my laptop. Ha Ha

yo'
@CarLaTeX it's stuffed in the chicken.

@yo' :D

8:06 AM
@PNDas that is the point ;-). Freeserif doesn't support your script. I tried with noto (from fonts.google.com/noto/specimen/Noto+Sans+Oriya?subset=oriya) and with it this here looks ok:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\setmainfont{NotoSansOriya}[Renderer=HarfBuzz,Script=Oriya]

\begin{document}
ମୋର
\end{document}

@UlrikeFischer Thanks, You're a life saver.
Should I still ask the question in the main site? Because it'll help other Odia people later.
Is it possible to make it a community post?

@MarcelKrüger this noto sans oriya contains a variable font. How do one get bold with it? fontspec claims it can't find it.

overleaf.com/project/6336f815c3699a68aa015db9 see this again, there is still some problem
But in the noto sans odia site, it appears correctly, fonts.google.com/noto/specimen/…

@PNDas sorry but don't link all the time to overleaf. either show a short example here, or if it longer ask on the main site.

\documentclass[12pt]{amsart}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\setmainfont{NotoSansOriya}[Renderer=HarfBuzz,Script=Oriya]
\begin{document}
ନାଆଁଟି ମୋର କାଳିଆ, କେହି ନାହିଁ ମୋ ଭଳିଆ |
\end{document}
But this doesn't show the output
How to do that?

8:16 AM
@PNDas i get this:
what is not correct?

@PNDas overleaf list the fonts they have installed pick one they have or add the font to your project

@DavidCarlisle ah, good guess :-)

I got this

@UlrikeFischer no bad guess, I got what @PNDas got. Older luaotfload?

@DavidCarlisle is the font from overleaf?

8:20 AM
@UlrikeFischer no

@DavidCarlisle yes, just saw in the log. I got the variable font from google.

/usr/share/fonts/truetype/noto/NotoSansOriya-Regular.ttf

@DavidCarlisle What is this?
@DavidCarlisle Any way to resolve this?

yo'
@PNDas Hi, Tom from Overleaf here. If you have an issue in Overleaf that's not shown elsewhere, it's indeed possible that the font versions we have is not the most up to date one. (With thousands of fonts and for scripts nobody on the team is proficient in, it gets tricky). The best option to be sure you get the font you need is to upload it directly.
@PNDas Considering packages, we should be at a version between 2022-06 and 2022-08 for all packages, and you can always check the version by adding \listfiles. (I'm not at my PC now so I can't give you more details or look for the right tutorials, sorry...)

@DavidCarlisle unless overleaf has an older version than the one I got from google it is not the font, so probably older luaotfload.

8:28 AM
@yo' Thanks Tom, I don't know how to upload it. I'll have to google it.

@PNDas simply use the upload button below the menu.

Also, I want to thank you all. I appreciate your kindness.
Ok done
Now it looks fine
Thanks again

@PNDas so the problem was with the font in overleaf?

@UlrikeFischer Yes

@MarcelKrüger that noto oriya font is also offered as a variable font, how do one get bold there? fontspec doesn't "find" it.

8:40 AM
@UlrikeFischer I think you currently have to request it manually:
\documentclass[12pt]{amsart}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\setmainfont[
  Renderer=HarfBuzz,Script=Oriya,
  BoldFeatures={RawFeature={axis={wght=600}}},
  BoldFont=*
]{NotoSansOriya}
\begin{document}
ନାଆଁଟି ମୋର କାଳିଆ, କେହି ନାହିଁ ମୋ ଭଳିଆ |
\bfseries
ନାଆଁଟି ମୋର କାଳିଆ, କେହି ନାହିଁ ମୋ ଭଳିଆ |
\end{document}

@MarcelKrüger that works. But it looks as if one will have to start to think about some interfaces or checks from fontspec. Can fontspec detect that the font is a variable font?

@UlrikeFischer I think this needs Lua to check for the axis, I'll add an interface to luaotfload. We probably should also look into adding instances to the font lookup.

Thanks, I have few more questions (1)How can I do italics? (2)How to add fonts in TeXmaker? It is giving me the error "! Package fontspec Error: The font "NotoSansOriya" cannot be found."

@PNDas You should really ask your questions on the main site, now that you have some working code to start with. This is what the main site is made for.

@JasperHabicht Okay

9:03 AM
@PNDas As for "How to add fonts in TeXmaker", since you use LuaLaTeX, you need to install the font you want to use to your computer, just like you would do if you want to use the font with Word (or whatever other software). As for the italics, it depends on whether the font supports italics. If not, it is possible to fake italics using slant (FakeSlant).

@JasperHabicht "Aaah, so this only holds for duplicates. For other reasons to close, it still needs 5 votes ..." -> I think also dupes for which you added the tag yourself are exempt
@JasperHabicht Congrats! :)

@JasperHabicht see Marcel's exmple above you can get a variable font version that probbly has a slant axis

@DavidCarlisle Sadly it doesn't (only weight and width)

@samcarter Yes, I had something like that before I had the gold tag: I voted as duplicate and the community bot also voted for it immediately and the question was closed ...

@JasperHabicht I have already installed the font. But I don't know how to add it in the TeXmaker. In overleaf, I just need to add the .ttf file.

9:06 AM
@MarcelKrüger ah OK I thought having gone to the trouble of making a variable font they would have added that, oh well..

@JasperHabicht If the community bot votes, this means that the original author of the post agreed to the dupe and thus it will be closes immediately.

@PNDas texmaker is just the editor, your local luatex should find it if you have installed it in your system

@samcarter I see ... there is a lot of things going on in this system that you only learn about after having used it for a long time already

@DavidCarlisle I was also surprised to that was not the fact :(

@JasperHabicht "I guess, I need to "close wisely" now" -> close them as duplicate as some draw-this-for-me post and it will be correct in most cases :)

9:09 AM
@PNDas also you don't have to pick noto, what font does your browser use for example, you could use that

@samcarter maybe this would be a candidate for another fun-tag ...

@JasperHabicht like "how to post a question" ?

@DavidCarlisle the static version don't have an italic either.

@DavidCarlisle hey, come on! I did post some questions ...

@JasperHabicht yes, the secrets of stackexchange - descended from generation to generation through fairy tale stories in the community :)

9:10 AM
@JasperHabicht you managed, some of us are still trying

@JasperHabicht You should teach @DavidCarlisle how to ask them :)

@UlrikeFischer I guess one can fake them, but then maybe better to find a font that has them (if they make sense).

@samcarter Actually, I have to admit that it becomes more and more difficult to post a question the longer you are on this site ... one reason is the infamous "solved it already by creating the MWE" effect ...

9:43 AM
@JasperHabicht yes, Q&A sites are brilliant in rubber duck debugging ones problems :) However if I already have a MWE, I'm usually going to post it anyway with a self-answer in case someone else will have the same problem in the future.
(and even if I found one possible solution, I will often get a much better answer. So posting a solved problem is definitely worth it)

4 hours later…
1:44 PM
Does anyone know why my page in latex is unusually big?overleaf.com/read/jftcgtbgsrmm

2:28 PM
@PNDas You might get an answer faster if you make a minimal working example and then ask a question on one of the Q&A sites for latex.

@samcarter, I know but I think it is a very silly problem. I feel that asking in the main site is very formal. So, I don't want to post it there.

@PNDas Don't worry about that. As long as the question is clear and contains a minimal working example which allows others to reproduce the problem without following external links, it should be fine.

@samcarter Okay I'll post it there.

3:03 PM
It's very strange, I created a blank project in overleaf and copied the code from the previous project (whose link I shared) and compiled it. There the pages are of correct size but in the previous project the pages were very large.

3:27 PM
@PNDas Just a guess, I did not follow the external links. A new project will automatically use the current texlive2022 version. Existing projects will keep the version under which they were created

3:50 PM
@PNDas don't ignore errors (that red 3) don't load amsmath and amssymb as you have loaded unicode-math, for the size, you have specified \usepackage{geometry}
\geometry{
a4paper,
total={170mm,257mm},
left=20mm,
top=20mm,headheight=14pt,footskip=14pt
} what size did you want?

just a second
the \geometry{} doesn't work with unicode math?
I wanted a normal A4 paper

@PNDas they are unrelated,

Okay I opened the link I shared
It seems fine
But in my account this looks like:
But when I open the link in incognito mode:

@PNDas Isn't that just different zoom levels?

No I didn't zoom in
I also don't know how to zoom in/out.

4:00 PM
@PNDas looks like zoom to me

@DavidCarlisle We can have a zoom meeting about it. I will just announce it on the TL list.

How to zoom out then?

@PNDas hover just below the recompile green button and a zoom +/- blue box appears
@mickep go away

@DavidCarlisle Oh no :(

4:02 PM
@DavidCarlisle Okay it was really zoomed in. But I swear I didn't zoom in
I'm sorry for wasting all of your times.

dodos are good on zooming

@PNDas i will send my overleaf customer support bill to @PauloCereda :-)
@mickep do (did) they taste as good as ducks?

@DavidCarlisle We will never know. :(

@DavidCarlisle Ha Ha , I'm sorry.

@DavidCarlisle I have a colleague who always eats vegetarian, except when duck is served.

4:06 PM
@samcarter It'd have been really embarrassing, if I had posted this on main site.

@PNDas no, questions really are better asked on the question site

On a side note it is very difficult to write Odia on LaTeX. Constantly switching back and forth from Odia to English.

@PNDas Is it easier elsewhere?

I don't know. But I know that there is a paid software
that article/book writers use

Do yo have an easy way to write the Odia in your editor? Or how do you do that?

4:11 PM
@PNDas Javier did say he'd show babel's auto switching but really it's the same even if latin script eg switching between English and French you would use markup to switch language not just mix them up so correct hyphenation, punctuation spacing etc is used for each language

@mickep I have English and Odia keyboads in windows. So I use that
After 10th we don't have science books in Odia. So I thought why are people not writing books in Odia. I wanted to write my own articles and put them online.
Now I know why people don't write books in Odia.

But if you have a keyboard it does not seem too complicated.

@PNDas once you get past small tests, how often do you need to switch scripts? Compared to the markup for sections, lists, math, ... one command to switch scripts does not seem much?

Odia inscript is complicated and Odia phonetic is easy. I don't know how to express my problem. When I write a word in LaTeX, say "କାଳିଆ ", it doesn't end at ଆ , it ends after some spaces. Do you understand what I'm saying?

@PNDas ?
@PNDas as we have said before, make a real example and post code on the main site

4:23 PM
I think switching is more difficult.
@DavidCarlisle In the link, I posted try to delete some odia letters and see what gets deleted

@PNDas oh that is not latex that is the editor, check with overleaf support the ace editor they were using is hopeless at indic scripts, but I thought they had switched to a different one.

In the pictures, if you notice the pointer is after ସେଟ but when I wrote "aha" it appears before ସେଟ .

@PNDas had a similar issue at learnlatex, I need to switch to codemirror github.com/davidcarlisle/latexcgi/issues/2

So it is difficult to delete and rewrite etc. And if you want to add something in between two words, 1st you have to find where the first word ends.
@DavidCarlisle also I tried TeXmaker, there is also the same problem.
So I thought it is problem of LaTeX

@PNDas I tried it a bit in vs code now, and I could not see this problem, but maybe I was not doing the "right" thing.

4:32 PM
@PNDas in overleaf "source" is the new codemirror editor (I thought this should work) "legacy source" is the old ace one which does not understand unicode combining characters, they display OK but it has no idea what column the cursor is in
@PNDas locally try a different editor Word, or vs code or emacs or whatever works, then run lualatex on the command line
@PNDas but do raise with overleaf support

@DavidCarlisle Okay, I'll do that.
In MS word I don't get this issue. But in MS word, everything else doesn't work.
Instead of writing the article and putting it online. I'll just write the blog itself in Odia that is much easier.

@PNDas as i say, you can use ms word to write latex, if that is better for you

@DavidCarlisle I have never written latex on word. I'll have to see.

@PNDas save it as text (wordpad may be simpler) or just select all and paste it in to overleaf or ....

4:49 PM
Now that I see the chat history of last few days , it seems people don't ask that many questions here. Actually, in the mathematics chat room, people ask small questions which they think is not appropriate for main site. So I asked my questions here.

23
A: Chat's etiquette regarding questions

David CarlisleIt's OK to ask on chat but you should not expect an answer (although you may get one anyway). The Q&A site is designed for asynchronous help, you ask a question and it stays visible and can be answered by anyone at any time that they feel convenient. If you ask in chat then although the archive...

5:19 PM
@Skillmon thanks very much. Could you elaborate what is the after heading mechanism?

5:29 PM
@tush \@afterheading the internal command used by \section and friends to suppress or not indentation of the following paragraph and to suppress a page break until at least a line of text after the heading, you will be able to find examples on this site
