@barbarabeeton I think its effect on the active list is smaller this way, if you do 2 a day for a year there is an effect on the list for the whole time. if you do them all in one go after a day or so the active list is back to normal, and all the posts fixed

@DavidCarlisle obviously: half of the active list is already un-David-Carlisle-d ...

7:18 AM
@tush the after-heading mechanism can help as well (and also can prevent indentation of the first line, if that's wanted)
@tush \endinput closes the currently read file (so if done while your main file is read it ends the TeX run)

8:11 AM
@mickep if only we could declare new math classes with custom spacing rules... tex.stackexchange.com/q/660063/1090

So, who got the most "answer edited" notifications this morning? I only got two. Who can beat that?

@samcarter I had 26 messages.

@UlrikeFischer Oh, excellent chances for you to win the most notifications contest:)

@samcarter can we have a "who made the most edits" contest?

@DavidCarlisle What should the big price be? A roasted duck for dinner?

8:17 AM
@samcarter good plan, or maybe a pineapple pizza

@DavidCarlisle Duck wrapped in pineapple pizza?

@DavidCarlisle how did you do it so fast?

@UlrikeFischer I'm well known for speed of error free typing

@DavidCarlisle mmm, after all your hard work, you'll need something more sustainable!

@samcarter at first I was rather shocked ;-) I thought I had to go through all of them and check, but after the first two I saw I can blame David.

8:21 AM
@UlrikeFischer :P

@UlrikeFischer I modified I script used to fix the \\ issue a few years back. @shreevatsa gist.github.com/shreevatsa/… basically it takes two key strokes to move to next post and 2 more to edit and re-submit the post, so you are mostly just limited by the 5sec per post limit of the site

What's next? University of Southern California ?

9:12 AM
Can we add a <tag:magic-ball-needed> to the site?
2

@Rmano I am really in favour of it!

@Rmano if worked it would have already been created before it was needed

@DavidCarlisle True. the tag is actually already somehow implemented: "Closed. This question needs details or clarity. It is not currently accepting answers."

@JasperHabicht yes, but it's not so funny. "Closed. Cristal ball out of batteries" would be much nicer.

9:29 AM
Next time, I'll add ЁЯФо to my comment. As tag-replacement

@DavidCarlisle I do not see what keeps you back. :)

5 hours later…
2:27 PM
@Rmano would be a really, really useful tag! I'd like to propose it for this post tex.stackexchange.com/questions/660034/… :)

2:56 PM
Hi, I'm new here. I wanted to write a LaTeX document in Odia/Oriya language (my mother tongue). I searched the internet and found "https://ctan.org/pkg/oriya". See the page 5 of the file "https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Awjf5iRKuTM6GNlePnEFXKYN_sOiLbQs/view?usp=sharing" . It says we just have to add package "oriya". But LaTeX gives error that "oriya.sty" not found
Does anyone know why it is happening?

@PNDas it is not in texlive, you would have to install it manually from ctan ctan.org/pkg/oriya. But can't you use lualatex or xelatex and some open type font?

I don't know how to use them, Also I don't know how to install it manually, sorry.
I'll have to see some youtube tutorials.

@PNDas It sounds as if learnlatex.org could be interesting for you (learnlatex.org/en/lesson-14#the-unicode-era has bit about using special fonts)
@PNDas How are you using latex? Locally on your computer with some editor like texstudio or are you using overleaf?

3:12 PM
@PNDas something like perhaps (but I have no idea about your language):
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\setmainfont{Freeserif}

\begin{document}
\end{document}
you then only need to compile with lualatex to get this:

@samcarter hi, I usually use TeXmaker and sometimes overleaf.
@UlrikeFischer thanks but I don't know what is lualatex, I have to search

@PNDas For overleaf: you can find a guide how to switch the engine to lualatex at overleaf.com/learn/how-to/Changing_compiler

@UlrikeFischer But will it be possible to write math equations in that?

@PNDas that is a tex variant. There should be menu entry in texmaker to change from pdflatex to lualatex, and in overleaf too.

@samcarter thanks I'll see it.
@UlrikeFischer Thanks , I'll try that.

3:18 PM
@PNDas yes, it is quite similar to pdflatex. The main difference is that it can handle unicode and open type fonts.

Actually I am not that knowledgeable in LaTeX. I copied a preamble from someone. Whenever I write a document I use that preamble.
Whenever I need something, I google it. Usually people in Tex stackexchange already answered it.
So I copy that answer and add that in the preamble.

@PNDas then do as @samcarter suggested and take a look at learnlatex.org: learnlatex.org/en
3

Hmm

@PNDas definitely use luatex and not pdftex, using pdftex with non-latin fonts is far more difficult

Also is it possible to have something like this: input "ka' and output is рмХ??

3:29 PM
@PNDas I realise it is not the right laguage but the issues for using LateX for Oriya will be similar to other Asian languages and learnlatex has a Marathi section that you may find useful learnlatex.org/mr

In the last message, I was talking about phonetic.
@DavidCarlisle I'll see that. Thanks

@PNDas possible, using teckit with xetex or lua callbacks in Lua, someone may already have set up the mappings but if not it is usually not too hard if the mapping to Latin script is simple enough

3:44 PM
@PNDas this makes it look more complicated than it is and again, wrong part of India, but just to show transliterated input is possible tex.stackexchange.com/a/511266/1090

@DavidCarlisle Thanks for giving your time.
LaTeX sure is awesome.
So many things possible.

4:02 PM
@UlrikeFischer Does it not work in amsart?
The odia text is not appearing

@PNDas vvv
Missing character: There is no рмХ (U+0B15) in font [lmroman12-regular]:+tlig;!
Missing character: There is no рм╛ (U+0B3E) in font [lmroman12-regular]:+tlig;!
Missing character: There is no рм│ (U+0B33) in font [lmroman12-regular]:+tlig;!
Missing character: There is no рм┐ (U+0B3F) in font [lmroman12-regular]:+tlig;!
Missing character: There is no рмЖ (U+0B06) in font [lmroman12-regular]:+tlig;!

@PNDas you need to select a suitable font like me above with freeserif.

You are using the default latin modern font, you need to switch to a font that covers this range

Okay thanks, I just have to delte the \usepackage{lmodern}.
@DavidCarlisle What is this?

@UlrikeFischer they have \setmainfont{Freeserif} but somethig changig it back.. ah... lmodern
@PNDas in overleaf use the menu at the top to see the log written by latex (that is from your project) latex warns about the missing characters, you do not have to scan the final pdf checking if any got dropped
@PNDas ^^^^

4:14 PM
Okay thanks

4:26 PM
\usepackage[utf8x]{inputenc}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\setmainfont{Freeserif}
I had the first two lines in the preamble. do the last two lines overwrite the first two lines?
I don't remember why I have the first two lines. May be I wanted something and the copied it from stack exchange
@DavidCarlisle what is this?

@PNDas remove them fontenc and inputenc are for pdftex

okay

5:01 PM
@DavidCarlisle -- But I thought you were one of the people who recommended not overloading the active list. Oh well, it's done. What's really needed is a way to allow a mass update without affecting the active list, but the powers apparently won't allow it. On the other hand, it was something like that (done by a power) that caused the double backslash disaster, so ...

5:12 PM
@DavidCarlisle -- Your script missed some desirable textual changes, but I can find most of those with a simple text search.

6:04 PM
@barbarabeeton also it intentionally missed all other uses of tex.ac.uk as a ctan mirror I may pick them up on another run but want to wait until the sql data is updated on sunday morning
@barbarabeeton they do now (sometimes) do bulk updates if you ask them nicely but as I'd already done the sede query seemed simpler just to do it. As I say the effect on the active list is limited it's aready well down the second page

@DavidCarlisle -- That shouldn't affect my intention to search for "UK TeX FAQ", which is all text and desirable updates aren't always the same. So I'll go ahead with that. I ran a search yesterday, and there were only about 70.
@DavidCarlisle -- Yes, but it managed to hide a bunch of other updates that I might have liked to see. My "follow" list isn't quite precise enough.

@barbarabeeton no it's all the non-faq ones, I'm not sure how many there are but they were showing up in my first searches until I had tweaked the search just to pick up the faq
@barbarabeeton if you want on sunday I can make a list of all posts mentioning the faq, although since there were over 400 broken links fixed, I think fixing is the main thing, if we worry about old posts with dubious wording on the site there will be no end

@DavidCarlisle -- Thanks, but don't bother. I'm taking a look now, and find, amusingly, that a lot of the hits are on answers that I wrote,

2 hours later…
8:49 PM
@barbarabeeton please check my text for comma placement

@DavidCarlisle Nice!

@DavidCarlisle -- Upside down, it turns into an apostrophe, but it remains symmetrical. Very nice. (Although it pains me to admit it.)

3 hours later…
11:39 PM
@DavidCarlisle the link you just added to tex.stackexchange.com/posts/3780/revisions gives me "Nicht gefunden. Die angefragte URL /tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/comprehensive.html konnte auf diesem Server nicht gefunden werden. " (CTAN's 404 error...)

@Lupino yes I spotted that on a different one and stopped, 404 is better than it was (no server at all) as tex.ac.uk is gone, but as here there's always chance that things have moved and just updating the domain isn't enough. I may redo tomorrow missing out /help tree

same with this one: tex.stackexchange.com/posts/12083/revisions Could it be a language thing?
@DavidCarlisle oh, okay. Was just curious why someone would bump up all the decade old questions :D

@Lupino mathmode got pulled, but there are a few hundred ctan references to tex.ac.org (orginal UK ctan host) and it's probably better to change them even if some still don't work as things have moved. None of them work as they are
