she doesn't like thunder/lightning, but is better about rain now

@leslietownes That's a start! Shai's sister before she died at 5 years old, was terrified by thunder and lightening. She would literally skulk tummy on ground with legs looking like she was swimming, to get behind furniture, under furniture, and such. My dread of thunderstorms, because of her fright, led me to dread them, even though Shai is okay with storms.

@leslietownes That's so sweet!

@leslietownes Oh, wow, kind of like a "knaves and knights, or knave and knight" logic puzzle! Cool indeed.
@hyper-neutrino Try your hand at nerdle!
@quid Your challenge for this week is to complete one (or more) nerdle, and post result(s) on or before Sunday, February 27, 2022.

@amWhy I'm up now. Sorry for waiting

@soupless Don't worry. I just wanted to make sure we touched bases, :-)
@soupless I need to finally eat soon. If this is early morning for you, I'll make sure to catch you in 9-10 hours? Else, I'd be happy to address your question, as best I can, here, or any room of your choosing :-)

@amWhy Oh, okay. Please do so, it's quite early here.

@soupless No problem! I'll stop in first thing tomorrow. See you until then!

Thank you very much!

@amWhy Me, me! Back in the old days, I wrote a BASIC program to let my friend and I play Go, with the board drawn using ASCII art. And I carried a copy with me on a floppy, so we could play wherever there was a computer. Incidentally, I still have most of my BASIC programs including that Go program, and I can actually run them on my current computer using an emulator called DOSBOX! =D

10:07 AM
@amWhy i've heard backgammon is really neat, and more mathematically interesting than is commonly believed. i've never played it myself.
Go is cool. I am bad at it.

@AlexanderGruber I played it a lot when I was younger.

has anyone ever got 1/6?

@MartinR how to play this, i'm new

@Koro I had 2/6 once by pure chance. But I don't play it every day, and sometimes I just give up because I cannot think of matching english words.

2/6 is really nice :).

12:25 PM
@Prithubiswasleftmse I don't really like the haphazard unicode standard, but it's what we got. For instance, the emoticons list seems so childishly put together (e.g. the three monkeys), and not an attempt to provide useful emoticons. There is no thinking emoticon, and some of them don't even make much sense (e.g. "disappointed but relieved face").

@user21820 There is no thinking emoticon?

@Prithubiswasleftmse Not in that unicode block.

@user21820 Wait then how can I type 🤔?

Because they added it only years later. Clearly, they weren't thinking in 2010 when they added the above-linked list:
Emoticons is a Unicode block containing emoticons or emoji. Most of them are intended as representations of faces, although some of them include hand gestures or non-human characters (a horned "imp", monkeys, cartoon cats). The block was first proposed in 2008, and first implemented in Unicode version 6.0 (2010). The reason for its adoption was largely for compatibility with a de facto standard that had been established by the early 2000s by Japanese telephone carriers, encoded in unused ranges with lead bytes 0xF5 to 0xF9 of the Shift JIS standard. KDDI has gone much further than this, and has...
Your thinking emoticon was added in 2015 as part of this list.
Apparently, it took 5 years for someone to use their brain enough to find it missing from the available emoticons. =P

@user21820 So it took 5 years of 🤔 to add the 🤔 emoji. Cool!

3:01 PM
@user21820 It is rather fun, and is manageable to do routinely, i.e., it isn't a time-suck!

@amWhy Hahahaha it already started sucking, because I found this archive.
I need to practice to make perfect! =P

@user21820 I found that too! Only did the first wordle! Picked up the game early in January.

@amWhy I'm going to do a few just to find my own humanly-playable strategy (since I'm not a robot like the one 3b1b made). =)

@user21820 Exactly! Good for you!

3:20 PM
The 3rd one was crazy.

3:46 PM
@user21820 fourth try was HUMPY, fifth, HUMPH. Indeed, quite crazy!

@amWhy I took 4 tries for that one, but on quite a few others I took 6. So far haven't lost yet, but I'm amazed at how many words can fit. Many times I can only think of one word left and it's completely wrong.

4:03 PM
@user21820 Wow, imagine the word LYMPH being used, while players try to exhaust all vowels, or GYPSY
That why I learned in first grade: List Vowels, to which we learned A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y.

Yea I was looking at the frequency chart and it turns out we can cover the top 10 letters using two words, but I don't know what to do after that.

or GLYPH ? Or CRYPT?

And I also know from mastermind that the strategies that minimize the worst-case guesses is typically disjoint from the strategies that minimize the expected guesses. Which one should we try to minimize for wordle? =)

@user21820 Yes, we've talked about that in this chat, strategies to maximize always winning, and strategies minimize how many guess are needed. I do like to minimize time/trials. Some users here will set aside that a letter is in the correct space, or two are in the word, to attempt to rule out more letters. If won plays in "hard mode", any attempt missing or violating earlier feedback, is rejected. I strive toward that mode. I've occasionally used a letter I should have known
the letter was already ruled out. But it's always an accident, or cognitive slip, when that happens.

@amWhy Ah, "hard mode" rules out a strategy with fixed first two words like ❤ 🦕 =P

4:22 PM
HEART and (what? animal?)

DINOS
=D
I'm literally trying that on today's wordle. Now thinking what to put as 3rd word.

Ahh, I get it!
About half of the time, I start with STARE, or STERN

The very first time I played, I started with HEART MUSIC, then after that I switched to STARE but didn't know what to put after that. Then I went to look at the frequency chart. =D
But even with blind first two guesses, I'm sure HEART DINOS is not optimal. Just too lazy to think. =P
Have you tried today's wordle yet? I'm hesitating halfway through haha.
Ahh.. I'll just try my luck.
Ok game over. I just realized that even posting the coloured boxes can give away a tiny bit of information to other people who haven't tried it yet, so I'll not post my results so soon haha..

But frequencies of, say, H, lowers significantly if one finds S, T, are NOT in the word, (or it increases dramatically if S, T, C, P are in the words. Frequency charts only report "how frequently does this letter occur in five letter English words." But they rarely occur without accompanying letters.
@user21820 That's fair.

@amWhy Yea you're right. HEART DINOS is just a first-order approximation for lazy brains like me. =D
HEART is actually worse than STARE according to the frequency chart, but I can't make the next top 5 letters after STARE into a word.

4:36 PM
I wonder how much traffic EL&U recently, has been from Wordle users?!

Maybe we should have a separate room for those who have already tried today's wordle hahaha..
@amWhy Did it spike recently?

@user21820 I was thinking the exact same thing!

What room name? WORDLE CURDLE?

@user21820 I don't know yet. I am wondering.
@user21820 That's great. But we are also beginning to report our "Nerdle.com" results here.
Which, more than Wordle, seeing colors may provide hints to users who might "get" where the "equal" sign is likely, and/or operators.

@amWhy Ah. Either we could have one room for all variants; try whichever wordle/nerdle/...dle variants you want for today before going to that room, or we could have one room for each variant. The former option seems preferable?

4:46 PM
@user21820 I agree, the former, for now. "Wordle Nerdles"?

 Wordle/Quordle/Octordle/Nerdle/Semant

For discussion about today's puzzles (spoilers!). A full list ...

Or "Wordles & Nerdles"
@user21820 I like that :D

5:08 PM
@amWhy Sorry, I'm late. Yes.

@soupless No worries!

I want to ask if my behavior at that time can still be considered as normal. For context, our teacher asked us to make eulogies for ourselves in the perspective of others.
I took the perspective of my teacher. Before I finished reading it, he realized that it was from his perspective. And then he cried. Although I didn't show it back then, deep inside, I felt happy that I made my teacher cry.

@soupless Absolutely it is about as normal as any one can behave. Everyone reacts differently to grief; that shows great empathy.

I mean, the happiness that I felt when I made my teacher cry. I think that's not normal.
I believe it's beyond normal. Yes

I think it also allowed you to express your grief, in a safe circumstances, vicariously. And I think his tears were yours, vicariously. I'm guessing you were happy, because you saw that it is valid to grieve. Maybe.

5:14 PM
@soupless It's hard to judge human emotions, especially those that come suddenly in unusual circumstances. Your teacher's assignment certainly counts as unusual. But why in your own words do you think it's not normal?

@user21820 Because seeing someone cry out of grief shouldn't make you happy, right?

@soupless I think you are miss attributing relief, not feeling so alone, the validity that sorrow is okay to express. Those are all feeling you try to shut down.

@soupless Who knows? amWhy gave a suggested possibility for your happiness at that point, and it's not a usual circumstance where we have prior incidents to compare to. Do you normally get happy when other people are sad? If not, then maybe it's just a sudden emotion you felt and nothing more.

No, I don't think it was relief that I felt at that time. If I were to describe it, I think it's something like 'Well, good for you.'

I suspect you resented the assignment. And/or you don't like him much at all. In those circumstances, it sounds like you were trying to make a point. That's different than a pattern of behavior. Can I ask you: if how you responded to me about your cat's dying; did that feel good to you?

5:22 PM
@amWhy It didn't feel good as there is too much regret. But maybe because I don't like him.

@soupless Ah, so if you don't like that teacher then I agree with amWhy that it could be the main reason you were happy to make him cry. Whether it's a good thing or not is a separate question (and complicated by the weird assignment), but at least does it seem to explain your feelings?

I think it explained my feelings a little bit. After that, I seemed to regret what I did though, but I still doubt if what he showed was his genuine emotions or just an act.

Agree with @user21820. Every one feels resentment at times, and we often feel badly afterwards. That's pretty normal.

@soupless Well, I find that assignment a bit distasteful, and since you say you even regretted it a bit, it seems to me that you're just fine, and I'll just forget about that incident. Regarding whether he was genuine or not, I would by default assume it was genuine (unless there is a history of false tears), but not think too much about it.

conviction in the floyd case.
@amWhy i'll think about it.

@leslietownes Really! Do you have a link?
All I'm seeing, when searching is the Conviction of Chauvin, who has already been sentenced.
You must have your finger on the "pulse" of Breaking News! I just found on NBC news. Thanks for the tip to check anew!
Interesting that the Federal trial precedes the State Trial: "A state trial is scheduled for June against the men on charges of aiding and abetting murder and manslaughter."

in another high profile case, the parents of that school shooter who gave him a gun and went on the run after he did a school shooting are being charged with negligent homicide, or whatever their jurisdiction calls that.

Also, learned this: google.com/…
@leslietownes Oh, awesome! I read this morning that the judge would be deciding today.
@leslietownes Tomorrow, a judge will rule whether to move the 15 year old to adult jail, or let him remain in the "Children's Village".

11:23 PM
@amWhy I'll make an honest effort
@amWhy yes

@quid Yeah, with those I addressed, like myself, it goes without having to ask. Please know that @user21820 and I have launched a chatroom for Wordle and Nerdle.
I haven't minded it here, at all! But @user21820 noticed that the colored grids, and comments, might be spoilers. The new chatroom makes "Spoiler!" clear in the room description.
