Variant B.1.1.529 has a fuckton of mutations and is rapidly pushing out Delta and other variants in certain regions in South Africa. It is even more transmissible than Delta and even appears to have mutations that allow it to evade immune responses.

of course twice the warning was warranted, but usually the first warnings came without sufficient data
the data in that Twitter thread looks too steep to me. To outcompete Delta by that margin would require an enormous advantage

So I read a bit more about that new COVID variant. Apparently, the effects of the mutations are mostly speculative, and the are where it rapidly pushed out Delta and other variants was already low in infections, so there wasn't that much to push out
