did not expect to see such variation exists. do we have aatex, batex, catex, eatex, etc?! :))

2 hours later…
8:26 AM
@egreg oh no :)
@egreg @CarLaTeX ^^ :)

8:45 AM
@PauloCereda I saw it yesteday on twitter, lol! (@DavidCarlisle ^^^)

@CarLaTeX :)

8:58 AM
LaTeX2e <2021-11-15>
L3 programming layer <2021-11-12>
3

@JosephWright I tried to update texlive.net but @StefanKottwitz's ctan mirror doesn't have it yet:-)
@CarLaTeX sharks clearly have no taste

@JosephWright I will not buy this programming layer, it's scratched

@PauloCereda b

@DavidCarlisle oh no

@DavidCarlisle I can give you a login so you can manually update at random times instead of my nightly cron job ;-) checking run time now
Shall I run again for you? no problem :-)

9:06 AM
@StefanKottwitz it doesn't really matter, I was just jealous of @JosephWright

@DavidCarlisle what's the matter, I'm jealous of @JosephWright every day
@DavidCarlisle tlnet has a time stamp of 4:45 yesterday and today, my cron job runs 0:50. I guess it's a good idea if I move my cron job to 6am

@StefanKottwitz ooh how about a cron job every minute? :)

@DavidCarlisle you can update texlive.net :-)
@PauloCereda the CTAN rsync took about 2 seconds, so it seems to be not so exhausting

@StefanKottwitz 1Gbps is nothing to your network. :)

9:23 AM
@PauloCereda rsync is just crazy efficient

@StefanKottwitz ooh :)

@StefanKottwitz @JosephWright bit.ly/31NrOkG
@PauloCereda now you need to make Overleaf match ^^ :-)

@DavidCarlisle ooh
26 mins ago, by Paulo Cereda
@JosephWright I will not buy this programming layer, it's scratched

@DavidCarlisle bit.ly isn't much shorter than texlive.net/run?\LaTeXe\%20\fmtversion :-)

@StefanKottwitz ah that one happens to work, if it gets any longer the chat markdown messes up the link that's why I used the shortner
@PauloCereda bit.ly/3Dc1MWk

9:32 AM
@DavidCarlisle I cheated and used [...](...) to have the non-messed-up link

@DavidCarlisle bit.ly/3n9Rosh

@StefanKottwitz even that fails sometines last time I tried
@PauloCereda bit.ly/3ongymJ

@DavidCarlisle bit.ly/3Dp0jM8

@PauloCereda ups, I made a scratch to Overleaf

@StefanKottwitz oh no

9:39 AM
@PauloCereda don't tell anyone

@StefanKottwitz ooh

422 Unprocessable Entity ok :-) that was true
@PauloCereda I corrected my URL to overleaf.com/docs?snip=\LaTeXe\%20\fmtversion.

@StefanKottwitz missing \%20 :-)

Hi folks. Does TeX have a standard error file handle? And more generally, if there is some documentation about TeX file handles, please point me to it.

@DavidCarlisle just the \ mh, that was the scratch, corrected :-)

9:50 AM
@StefanKottwitz oops

A: Write to aux file directly from lua

Marcel KrügerYou can use an undocumented extension of texio.write: Instead of passing a string as first parameter, you can also pass a TeX output file handle, e.g. \the\@auxout: \documentclass{article} \begin{document} \section{zzz}\label{z} \makeatletter \directlua{ texio.write(\the\@auxout, [[\string\de...

has a reference to "TeX output file handles", but I don't know what those are.
And doing a search in "TeX by Topic" for "handle" comes up with basically nothing.

@FaheemMitha he just means the things from \newwrite

@DavidCarlisle I had \LaTeXe%20\fmtversion and the AI did not load xspace (@PauloCereda, your task)

@DavidCarlisle Oh.

@FaheemMitha so a number 0-127 denoting a file opened by \openout

9:54 AM
@DavidCarlisle Does 1 happen to correspond to the aux file?
And which correspond to stdout and stderr, if any?
latexref.xyz/_005copenin-_0026-_005copenout.html says between 0 and 255 for LuaTeX.

@FaheemMitha auxout is whatever number it gets from \newwrite which is probably 1 unless you did something to get a file earlier. stdout (+log) is any number that isn't allocated to a file
@FaheemMitha never believe what you read on the internet

@DavidCarlisle And stderr?
@DavidCarlisle I think this counts as an example of Russell's Paradox.

@FaheemMitha not available from tex but I assume you can use Lua

@DavidCarlisle No, TeX just redirects it to stdout.
So, @MarcelKrüger mentions \the\@auxout. Is this associated with the number 1 in some way?

@FaheemMitha as I say it shouldn't be assumed to be 1 but it will be mostly (unless you use \include)

10:02 AM
@DavidCarlisle How can I determine that? I tried to print \the\@auxout but just got an error.

@FaheemMitha then you did something wrong, this works for example
\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}
\makeatletter
\typeout{XX \the\@auxout}
\end{document}

@DavidCarlisle Well, I didn't include the \makeatletter bit. My bad.

@FaheemMitha but you shouldn't ever need to determine it, the whole point of the tex register allocations is that the numbers don't need to be known

@DavidCarlisle Well, I sort of tripped over the issue. I wasn't trying to determine it.
I accidentally invoked the undocumented feature that Marcel was talking about.
And was very puzzled for a bit.

@FaheemMitha No it goes to stderr, I just tried.
\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}

\directlua{
io.stderr:write("\string\n-1 is negative\string\n")
}
\end{document}

10:08 AM
@DavidCarlisle Huh. I tested it earlier, and it went to stdout.

$ lualatex bb421 > /dev/null

-1 is negative
6 mins ago, by David Carlisle
@FaheemMitha then you did something wrong, this works for example

@DavidCarlisle OK.
@DavidCarlisle Thank you for the correction.

10:22 AM
@FaheemMitha you could report the latexref error to Karl

@DavidCarlisle Not sure what you mean. What latexref error?
Also, Karl who? Karl Berry?

Meanwhile, inside my terminal:
giraffiti:
	Vandalism spray-painted very, very high.

@FaheemMitha yes but actually the contact address at latexref.xyz/About-this-document.html

@DavidCarlisle Oh, you are referring to
30 mins ago, by Faheem Mitha
https://latexref.xyz/_005copenin-_0026-_005copenout.html says between 0 and 255 for LuaTeX.
?
So that's the wrong number?

@FaheemMitha 0-127 is the range
\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}

\immediate\openout100
%\immediate\openout200

\end{document}
@FaheemMitha try ^^ with the second line uncommented

10:28 AM
@DavidCarlisle OK.
@DavidCarlisle Confirmed. Sending an email.

11:04 AM
@DavidCarlisle Email sent.

@UlrikeFischer @samcarter ^^ ooh

1:28 PM
@PauloCereda @egreg @Sebastiano ^^^ Suricato is still under shock!

@UlrikeFischer ooh

@PauloCereda we probably should not discuss that two of the three players are related to Mönchengladbach ;-)

@UlrikeFischer :)

1:54 PM
@PauloCereda clever cats!
@AlanMunn much safer to let the kids play with guns than chocolate eggs - this country never stops to surprise me....

@PauloCereda oh, vimmers...

9:12 PM
Where in the texmfhierarchy should I place Lua binary modules so that TeX will find them? My Lua scripts are located in ~/texmf/tex/luatex, but TeX doesn't seem to be finding a binary module placed there.

9:42 PM
% Lua needs to look for binary lua libraries distributed with packages.
CLUAINPUTS = $TEXMFDOTDIR;$SELFAUTOLOC/lib/{$progname,$engine,}/lua//
@FaheemMitha ^
so export CLUAINPUTS=~/texmf/tex/luatex: should work

10:09 PM
@UlrikeFischer Ulrike, you're fantastic ahahahahahaahha ahahahahahah ahahahahah. Of course the chipmunk is in a state of shock.
@yo' Hi yo'.Welcome
@UlrikeFischer @egreg @PauloCereda Jorginho wanted to save the Italian country....But I think that it requires a pinch of humility, of giving space to others. He had already missed several penalties. Now stop with Jorginho as a penalty taker.

@Sebastiano you should play cricket instead

@UlrikeFischer I last night wanted to forget the scandalous video of the citizenship fund: Italians are always generous....especially with the Romanians. Look this video video.repubblica.it/edizione/milano/…
@DavidCarlisle Very kind David the cricket is very nice: interesting :-). I have terrible back pain: the muscle between my neck and shoulder blade is inflamed and I can't even twist my neck. I couldn't play the famous cricket on English soil.

@Sebastiano I meant Italy not you personally:-)

Oh, dear, we've just received a tornado warning! Two of them -- the alarm on the cell phone nearly makes one jump out of one's skin. Guess I'd better look for a place away from windows to hunker down.

@DavidCarlisle Look I am in tilt ahahahah :-)...I understand often (with the inglish language) another concept.
@DavidCarlisle Look here:
@DavidCarlisle Italians aren't good at cricket at playing but at giving away money they are real masters.
@barbarabeeton Barbara don't worry: just hide under the bed. At most I can host you: here in Sicily we have Mediterranean cyclones. obviously I'm joking to remove your fears. Be very careful.
@egreg Hi Prof. Have you seen this video? youtube.com/watch?v=jkwemS1CPIc or this news? video.repubblica.it/edizione/milano/…
@TeXnician Hi and welcome into chat.

10:32 PM
@Sebastiano Appalling.

@egreg But hadn't you seen it? :-) Taxes in Italy are paid only by honest people. If money is given away in television programs, it is normal that everyone wants to come to our country. Let's not talk about Sicily: they all land in Lampedusa, Pozzallo, Augusta and in many other Sicilian places. We are the banana republic.....

@Sebastiano I saw it in the TV news program.

@egreg The first news is given on La7 in the date 11-11-2021 edition 20:00 with the mitic Mentana :-)
