Q: What does it mean when my guy friend sends weird texts and how can I get him to be serious?

Jim BobI am a 18 year old male who has another male friend. In person he acts like a normal guy and speaks is a little on the quiet side but he sends texts that are a little weird and remind me of how of 12 year old girl would text. examples below. Of course, it is completely his option on how he wants ...

4 hours later…
6:45 AM
morning

2 hours later…
8:31 AM
morning all

I think it's just you and me :P
How's life?

8:56 AM
it does seem to be that way early in the morning a lot of the time :)

Yep, timezones :)

life could be a lot worse - work is picking up which is nice but i wish i'd gotten better sleep yesterday

The work thing sounds good, the sleep thing not :D

thank youu, and how about you :)

9:12 AM
work is getting a bit too busy, and sleep is lacking too (but that's my fault, I spent too much time staying up late lately :) )
This afternoon, people will start working on the floor of my apartment, tomorrow too. After that, my parents are going to do the painting and wallpaper (I'm not 'needed')
Not sure how I feel about it, this way I won't learn how to take care of myself, but I tried the painting and I sucked at it so far... so perhaps it's better that I stop practicing XD

its an interesting point about getting help vs better independence

If it were up to me, I'd be doing everything myself... they are going to die someday, and I'd rather learn before then so I don't end up paying others for simple stuff like that.
On the other hand.. I am grateful that they are insisting on doing this for me.

thats... definitely one way of looking at it

We'll see.. there's a diy stack exchange, I just remembered. I can snap a picture of the botched painting I did so far, and ask them if they have tips.
One way or another, I'll figure it out :P

i'd definitely be the sort of person to pay for it to be done over anything else

9:35 AM
I dunno. It feels so wasteful to pay for something just because you're kinda lazy XD I mean, I'm doing it too now! I'm paying people for putting in the floors, and the tiles outside later....
But yeah... there's money being spent that could probably be spent on better purposes than just being too lazy to try myself XD

1 hour later…
10:41 AM
i mean spending money to be lazy is fine as long as it isn't for everything

I don't know... I sometimes feel this whole society is pushing you more and more to spend money on having others do things for you, that you can do yourself (or making it impossible for you to do things yourself, like how hard it is to repair appliances these days).
And I don't like that, so I try to do what I can to stay aware that I'm just being lazy and that I should probably be better off learning to do things myself instead, so that if there ever comes a moment where there is no money or money becomes worthless....

10:58 AM
right to repair is finally starting to make waves but i concede your point. It is also probably for the best to be as self sufficient as possible... though planning for money becoming worthless does seem atleast a little pessimistic.

XD I know... it's borderline doomsday prepper but... given the way things are going these days, I can see it becoming reality more and more :/

lol
@Tinkeringbell I'd paint walls, but flooring and stuff.... ehhh
And I've painted my ceiling when it was needed and its nooooot worth it
@AlexRobinson you need tools to do stuff right
Our washing machine PROBABLY would have been fixed if we had a bearing puller and my dad hadn't just beat the bearing into submission ;D

@JourneymanGeek yes, though my understanding is that the movement is currently focused around giving non first-party repairers the right to perform it - so price gouging should be cut

@AlexRobinson oh that's kinda a thing for most appliances...

fresh out of luck if you own an iphone. battery replacements should cost in the order of £20-30 but apple will charge you anywhere between 1/3 to 1/2 of the cost of the phone itself

11:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek That's also a thing... needing different tools for so many things, while back in the good old days, a set of screwdrivers, a hammer and a soldering iron could get you a long, long way.

i ended up replacing my iphone 5's battery myself and saved £200 or so

I can get spares for our cooker - first guy we talked to was like "Oh, we need to instal it and its like... $$$" and the second guy at the same company when we called ahead was.... "Can you tell me who's that idiot?"
@Tinkeringbell and a soldering iron :D
granted our old TV needed repairs a lot... our current one has been humming along for a decade and half ._.

I had wireless headphones that ran on rechargeable batteries. The 'lid' of the battery compartment got lost one day... and do you think I could order a spare? For a set of headphones that was maybe 18 months old?

@Tinkeringbell sometimes

I couldn't. So the thing worked for a while with tape, but after a while moisture got in and it died...

11:10 AM
I ordered a replacement headband for my last pair of headphones...

I ordered the spare part, only to get a mail months later that they could no longer deliver it.

silica gel and duct tape would probably do a decent job...

and I have a spair part of the bit that broke... 3d printed in steel :D

3d printing definitely seems important for self sufficiency

eh, I'd say having models of replacement parts would be nice
even if you didn't have a 3d printer, you could get parts printed indefinately

11:13 AM
thats a fair point

@JourneymanGeek no, that goes against the 'don't pay other people to do stuff you can do yourself' :P

@Tinkeringbell Well - you have the option of spending 200-300 dollars on a 3d printer, then learning to use it...
or ordering out a replacement part in nylon or steel... on a 10 000 dollar printer...

@Tinkeringbell should one purchase a 3d printer printer so that if your 3d printer breaks you can make a new one. If so, how far up the manufacturing chain chain do you need to own hardware for true independency

@JourneymanGeek I'd be fan of a system like laundromats then. Just insert coins to use the 3d printer. But not like a shop where you order spare parts.

I'm going to bring up my weekend project again
I can buy a new keyboard for 65 quid. I just spent about ... 25 dollars on the same switches (with free shipping), and 2 hours on fixing a 30 dollar keyboard
it dosen't make sense in terms of $$ but... I could
@Tinkeringbell shapeways is essentially - upload a model, they print and mail it to you .

11:18 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yes but then you also pay for someone else to do the printing and mailing. I want something where I only pay for using the machine...

ah
and bring your own consumables?
Some hackerspaces print stuff for people if you cover costs, or bring beer

Sort-of? Maybe you can pay for the filament too, like how you can use the university printer for like 5 cents a print: it covers ink, paper, and the upkeep of the machine.

That's what a lot of hackerspaces do :D

It still sounds like there's a middle-man there then.
Someone you need to ask to print for you. That's not how the university printer worked :P

Well - if you know how to use it...
"ehh... just use the damned thing"

11:22 AM
That sounds more like it :P
Communism XD

actually an anarchist commune
in communism, workers own the means of production
in this case "whatever, don't break it"
you take responsibility for your own actions, and have a obligation to ensure that others still can use the item in question for their own use

I usually don't like anarchy... but this sounds nice :)

Ah, its a nice theory
but it needs people to be aware of that, and not be selfish

i feel like a lot of people have a disconnect between what they think anarchy is and what it actually is

it breaks down the moment someone breaks something and dosen't take responsibility
@AlexRobinson cause folks give it a bad name
its not 'no government'
its 'no one has the right to force you to do something'
or precisely, not using violence, force or threats to do so

11:28 AM
@JourneymanGeek From wikipedia: "Anarchy was first used in English in 1539, meaning "an absence of government"" XD

On the other hand, as a moderator, while I try not to use cohersion as a way to regulate things, sometimes, I'm also the wielder of the rolled up newspaper

@JourneymanGeek And this is going to fail then, like any form of 'golden rule'

@Tinkeringbell much like any theoratically wonderful system...
it breaks down because cows are not spherical
People are not totally rational, unselfish and do not have perfect information

People suck :P

(or communism because no communist party has been able to go past being an absolutist organisation and hand over power to the prolitariat)
on a small scale, there have been examples of societies that ran on both lines

11:47 AM
Democracy isn't working either, as that somehow pushes people to the right and left without having an eye for the middle.

basically power goes to the best liers or the most ruthless :D

12:01 PM
@Tinkeringbell i feel going by the initial definition of any word can be unhelpful given how contemporary language is - particularly in slang

@AlexRobinson I know... but it doesn't make it strange that many people still associate a word with it's initial meaning, that it causes such a misunderstanding.

ah, i misinterpreted your point, my mistake

No worries... I need to make clearer points :)

well i also know i have a tendency to misinterpret which probably doesn't help lol

1 hour later…
1:40 PM
Happy Thanksgiving.

2:06 PM
I thought it was national flu shot day! Isn't thanksgiving a bit later?

2:24 PM
Canada.

Googles... Ah. Okay, makes sense :P

Heh.

1 hour later…
A J
3:27 PM
> 15 + 15 is thirty.
16 + 16 is thirty too.
breaks the silence

4:06 PM
I'm afraid it'll stay silent for a while again, until tomorrow ;)

A J
4:34 PM
hmm

4:53 PM
Unless you have loads to talk about? :P

A J
Nothing much to talk about, though.

5:25 PM
Same here.. mostly mentioned everything that's going on that deserves mentioning :P
