@FaheemMitha Complicated? The perl answer is very clear, in my view. More simple than iterating over the chars is probably hard to find. And the second solution with a few pipes is very well commented and easily understandable. What would you imagine to be simpler? (You like to stress you are on a Unix-like system; remember Unix philosophy is “do one thing and do it well”.)
@TeXnician I didn't stress it. Just mentioned it. And I thought that something like this should be possible more directly from some utility. Without programming.
@PauloCereda Given how much of a thing Unicode is, and also given that the hex representation seems to be everyone's favorite, I just assumed there would be a way of getting it from a file without fuss.
Anyway, the top answer (the Perl one) works, so I upvoted it.

Does anyone feel like commenting on this? I'm considering posting this on StackOverflow, but I thought I would first ask if I was doing something obviously wrong.
Would you use the beamer docuemntclass for presentations at alma mater or at school or switch to PowerPoint? I believe that PowerPoint is indispensable in such cases, what do you think?
@Schubladenzieher Hold a few of my talks with PowerPoint, a few with beamer. If there is a template I must adhere to, I use the software in which the template was provided (unless I got enough spare time to develop a beamer template). Boils down to: I prefer beamer if I have the choice.
@JosephWright does the beamer class option onlyslideswithnotes actually exists? it is mentioned once in the docu with "see below" but there it no description.
@FaheemMitha The for in loop runs until the first return value is false. Since the second row starts with NULL, (which is represented as nil) the second row is interpreted as the end marker and not a real row, so it isn't printed. Since it already had an end marker, the function isn't called again to close the cursor.
