A: How do off-topic question askers find MO?

Najib IdrissiWhen I type "ask a math question" into Google (incognito mode), MathOverflow is the second link. Of course, Google tailors results to my past search history, but I would wager that this is a significant source of new users. SE spends a lot of time and energy on search engine optimization, so this...

It is worth pointing out that Tim Campion recently escalated to SE the request for some changes in the text of the modal window shown in your screenshot: What should the modal window for first-time askers say? (The final proposal is in the accepted answer.) — Martin Sleziak 19 mins ago
@MartinSleziak That's interesting, but I'm skeptical. As Internet users, we are trained to close modals (which usually contain ads, cookie/tracking-related boilerplate, newsletter registration forms, or similar useless information) as quickly as possible to get to the useful content. — Najib Idrissi 14 mins ago
It's right to be skeptical - but still I think that it is worth trying. In my 2021 feature request I have mentioned some data from other sites. This was follow-up to the previous feature request from 2017. One of the moderators said back in 2018 that they are planning to do this - it took more than two years. (I understand that some MO users might see advantages to having such questions here - but I did not recall objections to these changes.) — Martin Sleziak 8 mins ago
@Catija I was a bit curious whether it is possible to get some estimate when somebody might look into Tim Campion's request: What should the modal window for first-time askers say?

Q: What should the modal window for first-time askers say?

Tim CampionWhen a user asks their very first question on a Stack Exchange site, they are shown a modal window with some introductory advice. As explained in the March 2020 announcement of this feature, there is a standard Stack Exchange boilerplate wording for this advice, but the wording can be customized ...

A: What should the modal window for first-time askers say?

Tim CampionOkay, after several days with no further substantive discussion on this question, it appears that both changes which I suggested as answers are supported by the community. After tinkering with a couple other possibilities, I was not personally able to come up with anything making the words "resea...

Sorry if this seems impatient - after all it was marked only a month ago. (Which is negligible compared to the time the MO mods waited before doing anything. On the other hand, I would guess that this is something that's not very difficult to do.)
