@Mithical It was a worthy one to pull. THe edits were beneficial.

Screen reader users and visually impaired folks everywhere thank you.

<3

:D I did write a guide on good image descriptions - but I'm still kinda a novice so if anyone has any improvements, happy to have them. :)

A: How can I write good alt text?

CatijaFor me, adding alt text is really important. Historically I didn't understand why it was important but I've since learned better - people accessing the site using screen readers or otherwise text-only should have the best experience that we can offer them, so if you're editing someone's work that...

I'm always surprised at images with empty descriptions. You took the time to deal with this easy accessibility feature... just to remove it. Better to leave the default "enter image description here", at least that gives users a notice there was indeed an image

Yeah. That seems like an odd behavior - But in general, I tend to think back to the me from 5 years ago who didn't realize why it was important (which I mentioned in my post, too).

2:17 AM
Image descriptions became more important to me once I went back into school - imgur is completely blocked as "porn", so all I see are descriptions (or nothing, if it was removed)

Ah, interesting. That's somewhat disappointing. (that the school blocks imgur)

bobble has been doing a lot of work converting MathJax tables into screen reader-accessible Markdown tables on Puzzling SE and other sites, which is extremely helpful. I thankfully don't have to use a reader much anymore after getting better glasses, but for a few months when my vision went downhill and I used one as an internet reading aid, it was super helpful.

That's been slacking off recently since I got blowback from multiple sources against multiple moderation actions at once, and schoolwork piled up, so it is on pause for mental health reasons

Still a very nice thing that you did, though :)
It's a tricky business because large edits like table conversions and adding image descriptions tend to trip SE's auto-filters if you're not a repped user of that site, it appears to the filter like a large chunk of text removal and a large text addition at once so I'm guessing it automatically flags it as potential spam from an unknown user. So you kind of have to join the site to make accessibility edits there in any significant way.

That accounts for... every single one of my 8+ auto-bans, yep

2:28 AM
I understand why that's necessary, obviously - just a bit of a bummer if you mean well :p
Those darn robots

@Catija, can you whitelist my IP? :p

hehe

I think we only block IPs... I'm not sure we have a way to put people on explicit allow lists.

darn it

bobble is still an excellent editor crown

2:32 AM
do I get a crown
to make me a crowned crown
crown with a crown

hmm, one second
crown-ception

Woah.... that's a lot of crowns.

(by the way, folks, my homework has reached a level where I can no longer devote time to any answers or questions for here. should let up when school ends next Friday)
I am working on my projects before school, during class (even when I technically shouldn't be), after school, and during my normal relax-time

@bobble Good luck!
Also, I just awarded the bounty on your Watership Down answer, so you've scooted ahead of Cheese and fi12 to join the top 21.
Now with more than double the rep of @PrinceNorthLæraðr. North, you regretting inviting bobble here? :-P

@verbose Thanks.
Now, *here*'s an "English isn't my first language, what does this phrase mean" question that I'll agree definitely requires knowledge of the book as well as language skills to answer properly! https://literature.stackexchange.com/questions/11771/meaning-translation-of-title-the-light-fantastic-by-terry-pratchett

9:26 AM
@bobble we’ll miss you. Good luck with projects and finals! Ooh just think, you’ll be all done with school soon! 🥲 Little Bobble ... all grown up (sniff)

Q: How different are "the tracks" from "the steps" that one leaves in the snow?

John VReading a story by A. Blackwood, I am not sure what to make of the following phrase: The night was still as ice, bitterly cold. Breathlessly they ran, following the tracks. Halfway his steps diverged, and were plainly visible in the virgin snow by themselves. I thought that the tracks in the sn...

Q: meaning of "they blurred into one another and were gone"

Viser HashemiThis passage is from The Children's Bach by Helen Garner How fresh and pretty he looked, sitting at her piano in his clean white shirt with the sleeves rolled up and the top button fastened! She said, ‘You look gorgeous!’ He laughed and looked down. ‘What was that you were listening to?’ ‘Haydn....

user12893I want to read this book but i cant find it anywhere. in sites like this you can register and get the download link but I dont have credit card so I cant register. if somebody can get it and email it for me I would be so thankful. https://op.uiergjds.ru/?_token=uuid_1b1panv4g2ki6ka84mn_1b1panv4g2...

@bobble yes, but nobody has to go to university. Now that you’re (almost) done with high school, you’re not obligated to learn another thing ever again!
And just like that, ELU becomes the third site on which I have ever rep capped

8:27 PM
@verbose Nobody has to go to school either, at least in countries (which include the US) where home education is legal.
Congrats on the repcap! If that's from a question rather than an answer, you're a brave soul :-)

@Randal'Thor Hehe, why would I be? :P
It's been a while since I've been here
But I'm finally done with school for the year!!!

Q: Trying to identify short horror story about memory eraser

CarfilhiotI am trying to identify a short story originally published in the 1970s in a British horror anthology. It concerns the invention of a selective memory eraser, and the story concludes with everyone in Britain having been fitted with one of the helmet-like devices by the government, and watching th...

8:46 PM
@PrinceNorthLæraðr Yippee! Big plans for the summer? You’re going to spend your days meticulously researching unanswered Lit SE questions and dramatically bringing down their numbers, aren’t you?

:-D
Congrats tree!

@Randal'Thor True, but there’s an expectation that home-schooled children receive some schooling.
@Randal'Thor ‘Twas an answer

@verbose Yep, the "you’re not obligated to learn another thing" bit is true ... sort of :-P
"Nope, I won't take this job - I might have to learn something, and I promised myself after leaving school ..."

hang out on Twitter for a hot minute and you’ll meet thousands of people who are aggressively proud of their unwillingness to learn anything
2

@verbose Hehe, maybe :P
I'm sorta busy this summer (but definitely much more free time to do other stuff like hang out on Lit SE). I was asked to be the drum major for our marching band next year, so responsibilities... and I'm also taking some summer classes at my local community college, but it's mostly self-paced so

8:52 PM
@PrinceNorthLæraðr ooh nice! Congratulations on the drum major. 🥁 What are you taking at the community college?

I'm taking Fundamentals of Communication, Voice and Diction, and Legal Ethics
They just seemed like cool classes, so I signed up for them

Ah. Prepping to be a hotshot litigator, I see

Hehe, maybe

laying the foundation for your career as an eloquent legal beagle!

I'm planning to major in music composition, but have been exploring potential double-majors so that I'm not stuck with a semi-useless degree

8:55 PM
Ah.

I'm not really completely sure I want to go into law, but I am in our school's mock trial team and have enjoyed that... some basic background in law never hurts
Though law school is expensive and time consuming so :P

Generally music majors I know are very good at math and make their living telling computers what to do

Lol, as of currently I don't like math and I know close to nothing about telling computers what to do
Though Deusovi promises math will get more fun... but he's also weird
(Deusovi is a mod over at Puzzling Stack Exchange and helps me with my math stuff)

you might want to check into law school placement rates ... my sense is that there’s a glut of qualified lawyers with not enough jobs. Unless you go to a top tier law school, and I have no doubt you could get into one of you wanted

Yeah, a career in law is finicky. There's two fields I know I won't ever do - patent law (I can't think of a more boring job that requires soooooo much paperwork) and family law (nope).
(my "enter" button is too close to the apostrophe button :P)
Divorce, drama, custody... yeah no

9:01 PM
@PrinceNorthLæraðr So if we ever need to drum up some support, we know who to ask.

Criminal law seems interesting but also in the words of my friend... "as the prosecution you're probably putting an innocent person in jail and as a defense you're probably defending a criminal"

@PrinceNorthLæraðr entertainment law? With a music background that could be fun

Yeah, I was thinking about that as a possibility

Ah
Doug Emhoff is an entertainment lawyer and he seems cool

Right now, Constitutional law seems the most interesting (it's also what I do currently in my mock trial team - I argue whether or not a piece of evidence is Constitutional or not)

9:04 PM
Ah. Barack Obama is a constitutional lawyer and he seems cool

hehe
The man can dunk three-pointers like it's nothing
I would very much like to go into litigation to make laws, but politics seems more like bashing other people's heads rather than... actually doing stuff sooooo
That sucks

yep, politicians don’t act in good faith, necessarily
The trouble isn’t that most pols act in bad faith. It’s that there are enough who do, which makes it hard for the good faith ones to get stuff done.

@PrinceNorthLæraðr I know someone IRL who spent a few years working as a lawyer and then quit because it made them depressed. They couldn't feel they were doing any good for people; no motivation, morally draining, just the thought of a lifetime in that line of work was unbearable.
It took a huge amount of courage, though, to leave a well-paying job and spend the next few years doing volunteer stuff and trying to rebuild their life in a new direction.

Yeah
Being a lawyer seems to drain the very life from you
I was considering international relations to go into like diplomacy

9:09 PM
@Randal'Thor good for them

I get the odd feeling that being a lawyer just isn't it for me

I'm sure some people find it possible to combine being a lawyer with feeling moral satisfaction and a sense of being good, but at least for this person it wasn't.

Then don’t do it, lad. Lots of careers out there.

@PrinceNorthLæraðr so maybe my anecdote will be food for thought in swaying you :-)

9:11 PM
Piles of paperwork, highly restrictive yet highly unpredictable work schedule, one of the lowest job satisfaction rates in the country, and MONOTONY
My aunt is so funny

As an opposite motivator, if you want a romanticisation of law as "defending the innocent", and if you like 1980s British TV series ...

I was thinking of double majoring in Communications, since that's a really flexible major and just a useful life skill
And my aunt is like
"With your grade and your GPA you want to waste it on Communications? Do something cool like astrophyics!"
I started laughing so hard
She was on call with my mom and my mom just had this like "bruh" moment face
I don't think my aunt realized like how much math goes into something like astrophysics... nor realizes that I'm not really a STEM kind of person

Snobby scientist over here chipping in to say that astrophysics is a real (i.e. STEM) degree and Communications sounds like just a lot of talk :-P

9:17 PM
Ooh i love this youtuber

Well, tree, you still have years of high school, college, and grad school ahead of you, so there’s plenty of time before you have to make an actual living. I’d say the world is your oyster, but I’m worried that would offend Randolph’s vegetarian sensibilities

Randy, you're vegetarian?

between those and the ‘doku’s Victorian ones, I can’t even say anything on here any more 😢

Biochemistry: "A major full of psychotic geniuses who take pleasure in their own suffering"

@PrinceNorthLæraðr You're talking to two vegetarians here, I do believe.

9:19 PM
Dang
Hides steak

So ... we eat plants.

As a tree, I disapprove of the blatant killing of my species

looks hungrily at nearest tree

Speaking of the ‘doku, is it just me or has he been around a lot less lately, both in chat and in posting answers to the site? Hope he’s doing okay

jinx :-)

I had my first Corona vaccine dose roughly 7 hours ago. I haven' felt any side effects so far :-)
Hopefully he hasn't turned into a robot drone, or whatever it is people are supposed to do after getting a Covid vaccine.

I think I grew a third arm after mine, I don't remember

@Randal'Thor i did but on me it’s an improvement
@PrinceNorthLæraðr well, additional limbs is a sign that a tree is healthy, no?

I think so

@verbose bam
Well played.

9:23 PM
Hahaha

\o

Pretty sure @Mith is a fan of this Youtuber ^^

10:03 PM
@Bookworm maybe OP just forgot they had already asked this on SFF

Maybe just trying to get more exposure on it cross-platform and didn't know?

I was trying to make a joke about memory erasure

10:39 PM
Oh lol

11:03 PM
@Randal'Thor Yes, it's more like, you don't have to sit a formal class or take pointless exams. You still learn new things every day, you can't stop that.

@PrinceNorthLæraðr No tree pun here from @verbose or @Randal'Thor ?

Hehe
I know, I was surprised

@PrinceNorthLæraðr why are you wearing a Bobble hat?

It's a long story

Better than a bobble head.

11:12 PM
Its a crown, thank you very much

Ah, the crown prince.

It's also the reason why my name is Prince North Læraðr... it used to be just North... and then North Læraðr

it's the username version of scope creep

Q: Help! I'm being haunted by a non-existent comment

AlexThis is a deleted answer. When I open it it shows me one comment, along with the option to "show 1 more comment": However, when I click on "show 1 more comment" nothing happens. That is to say that no new comments appear, but the "show 1 more comment" link disappears, as it has been "used up":...

I seemed to have missed a lot over the past month ish

~30 sunsets.

@Alex well I was gonna say, you’re not a stem person, trees have trunks
then I realized that those are elephants that have trunks 🐘
so I confused myself too much to respond

That reminds me of the elephant question I haven’t posted.

oh?

Have to get around to it.
Though maybe not.
Basically about different words being used for elephant in a book.

11:25 PM
Pachyderm? mammoth? mastodon? Tusker? Jumbo? heffalump? 🐘 🦣

Not English.
(The book is, though.)

right, I don’t believe elephants are native to England
