@UlrikeFischer After being called out for causing trouble, yet a new identity has surfaced: user241266
@DavidCarlisle It would be nice if TeX had some kind of dead code elimination and tell you about the macros you defined but didn't use.

@HenriMenke perhaps but with expl3 pre-loaded there are typically thousans of macros that are unused, and even more if you load tikz

7:21 AM
@CarLaTeX thanks and good morning 2U2!

@DavidCarlisle Sure, telling you about every macro is just going to be noise, but it could be used to identify files whose macros are unused, which then allows to identify packages that are unused.

@HenriMenke wasn't it already deleted? One could not click on it yesterday.

@daleif The username is not a clickable link, if that's what you mean.

@HenriMenke it is normally on active users, then one can see their activities (which was what I wanted to check)

7:28 AM
@daleif it is a new number (266 not 086).

@HenriMenke ahh, I was wondering what the connection was with the numbers in the URL, thanks

@UlrikeFischer sounds strange that Ubuntu etc would not include texlive-fontconfig.conf.

@daleif I have no idea, I'm on windows ;-) I only know that linux users typically have a problem here. What is the content of your conf file?

@UlrikeFischer I use upstream TL, so I'm guessing the same as yours
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>
<dir>/opt/texlive/2021/texmf-dist/fonts/opentype</dir>
<dir>/opt/texlive/2021/texmf-dist/fonts/truetype</dir>
<dir>/opt/texlive/2021/texmf-dist/fonts/type1</dir>
</fontconfig>
Nice little XML document. Might as well test your suggestion on that question. I've generally given up on xelatex in my system, which is why I tend to send people to lualatex instead.

@daleif I'm on windows ;-). I don't have to bother with this.

@daleif note that last line (type1) has issues I suggest deleting it (I raised that as an issue on texlive list the other day)
@UlrikeFischer what's the context here?

@DavidCarlisle extend fontconfig so that xelatex can find the fonts by name.

Q: "CMU Serif" font is not found by fontspec

sparusaurataWhen I compile a document using the CMU Serif font: %!TeX program = xelatex \documentclass{article} \usepackage{fontspec} \setmainfont{CMU Serif} \begin{document} Lorem ipsum... \end{document} I get an error: Package fontspec: The font "CMU Serif" cannot be found, even if the font is actually...

@daleif thanks just found it
@daleif Norbert is in charge of packaging the tug version and the debian one, he's probably barred from messing with system wide font configuration in debian (and also when I suggested deleting that type1 line he said he was suspicious of including any of those directories so agreed with deleting one of them)

@UlrikeFischer tried the soluition you linked to, sort of worked, now I'm getting xdvipdfmx:fatal: Invalid font: -1 (0)

@daleif that is exactly what happens if you leave in the type1 line,

@daleif did you remove the type1 line as suggested by David?

Not yet, fc-cache took a whiiile, I'd edit it and run again
yes, that helped

2:05 PM
@UlrikeFischer it will work and I'll claim the credit, and noone will think to scroll back this chat a month or so and see I got the idea from you.

@DavidCarlisle Isn't that the plan? You get the fame -- I get the blame ?

I added an answer as to what I did on my system.

@DavidCarlisle My guess this is because texlive contains a huge number of fonts that most users don't want appearing in their libreoffice drop down list and taking half a life time to load…

@DavidPurton people who use wysiwyg editors deserve no sympathy?

@DavidCarlisle works for me

@PauloCereda -- You're very naughty. (Where's @AlanMunn?)

@barbarabeeton ooh

@PauloCereda found distant relatives of you...

@Rmano ooh <3

@Rmano oh a fight

4:37 PM
Yep, lot of noise but no contact... they seems quite civilized

@JosephWright ooh

LaTeX2e 2021-06-01 final pretest off to CTAN

@JosephWright June 1st? :)

Why adding `\mathit{hbar}` instead of just \hbar makes it not render as hbar? All in math mode. Maple generates hbar by putting it inside \mathit{hbar}. When doing so, it renders in pdf as `hbar` and not as the math symbol expected. I will report this to Maplesoft so they can fix it, but wanted to ask why this happens. Here is MWE

\documentclass[12pt]{article}
\usepackage{amssymb}

\begin{document}

%Maple generated
\[
\mathit{hbar} x
\]

%default
\[
\hbar x
\]

%from amssymb
\[
\hslash x
\]
\end{document}

@Nasser Since there is no backslash before hbar, it is not a command but just four letters next to each other. \mathit only affects the font used, it doesn't magically turn text into symbols.

@MarcelKrüger yes, this makes sense. I reported this bug to Maplesoft so they can fix the Latex generator.

6:45 PM
@MarcelKrüger ooh MathML secrets
@DavidCarlisle quack

7:06 PM
@PauloCereda luamml even comes with an integrated secret mode: If \tracingmathml is set to 0, MathML is still generated but kept hidden from evil users.

@MarcelKrüger ooh
ooh trials
@DavidCarlisle ^^

7:29 PM
@PauloCereda oi dinner
@Nasser note if it is fixed to be \hbar than \mathit` will have no effect with the standard font setup. \hbar is set up as a fixed symbol not like the lower case letters that change fonts with math alphabet commands.
@PauloCereda see: now you have jinked it and it's not usable for what I wanted to do

1 hour later…
8:40 PM
@PauloCereda Oh, I wonder if it wouldn't be easier to give the ducks a label that still can have cookies :)

@JosephWright longtable 4.15 I hope it works....

9:08 PM
I have a package called postersizes.sty which defines reasonable font sizes for the standard commands plus a few others. It's designed to work withtcolorbox although it has no dependency on it. It's dated from 2018 but has no author. It's not on CTAN and googling finds nothing. Anyone recognize it? If so where did it come from?

9:26 PM
@AlanMunn you wrote it one evening and forgot about it?

@DavidCarlisle It's possible, but I don't think so, looking at the code. It has way more stuff commented out that I would likely never have added myself. If it were just a list of \@setfontsizecommands I'd believe it, but it also has a bunch of commented out code setting display skips and list parameters etc. So I'm pretty sure it's not mine.

Apr 27 at 8:11, by Ulrike Fischer
@DavidCarlisle ah sorry, I sometime forget that one should assume that every package is from you unless proven otherwise ;-)
@AlanMunn I didn't write it but the quote seemed appropriate

@DavidCarlisle :) But now searching a bit more, it seems that I did indeed write it, since the original version is inside a folder of stuff I wrote for an R workshop we held 3 years ago.

@AlanMunn some people may be surprised by that. I'm not, it happens all the time:-)

9:49 PM
@DavidCarlisle A little more detective work explains the commented out code: I adapted my version from the extsizes package .clo files.
