@reuns I do wish we had a better picture of exactly what moderation entails. But the idea of the math.se mods handling MO is a nonstarter for several reasons. First, there's no indication that the MO mods need additional help; they are doing just fine. My impression is that the main reason we're even having an election is just because it's been awhile since we last did so and there's inherent value in rotating these duties a bit.
@TimCampion OTOH, I thought in the past about the idea of outsourcing ("hiring") mods to some people who are not MO users. Considering that a typical MO user has a lot duties IRL (coming mostly from academia) means that there isn't much time for moderating.
As you can see, the MO mods often ignore questions on MO that only they can answer. (As an example you can take your question: What do moderators do these days?)
My impression is that the mods on Mathematics are more responsive on meta (and in chat).
Of course, this is just my personal impression. I am not sure what would be good statistics to measure such things and compare mod involvement on meta between sites of various sizes. (Mathematics is about 10 times the size of MathOverflow.)

Q: How could I compute my "candidate score"?

Alex M.I have noticed that, during elections for moderators, the candidates are awarded a "candidate score", computed from their activity on MO. Is its algorithm public, so that I be able to compute it for myself, to know where I stand? In particular, I have noticed that it depends on the number of ba...

This was mentioned several times here in this chatroom - so I suppose that the post on meta was made just to make this available also on meta.

Q: What are the details on the "candidate score" which shows during an election?

user212646The way stats used to be shown during a moderator election have recently been changed. It now shows a "candidate score", which appears to be an amalgamation of total rep and certain badges, awarding a point for each badge and each 1000 rep. This change is retroactive, so all the previous and clos...

Q: What would my Election Candidate score be?

TimHow can I find out what my election candidate score is? For example, on Ask Ubuntu I'd like to see exactly what score I'd have out of 40. A SEDE query would work but I'd like one nicely presented - an equivalent of flair would be really nice!

@EmilJeřábek: Yes, the first of those posts fully addresses my questions, and the second one is useful too. Maybe write a brief answer containing those two links, allowing me to close this question? — Alex M. 17 mins ago

A: How could I compute my "candidate score"?

Emil JeřábekThe criteria are described exactly in What are the details on the "candidate score" which shows during an election?. Moreover, What would my Election Candidate score be? includes a link to a SEDE query that lets one compute their candidate score.

The last minutes... a hush falls over the crowd, who wasn't very talkative anyway.

7:54 PM
5 min

Results are not up yet.

@AsafKaragila then whats the point of putting time in?

I thought that at 0 min, the results were going to display

Best of luck to everyone!

8:00 PM
Winners are Asaf Karagila, Tim Campion, and Stefan Kohl.

Congratulations!

Thanks! :)
@TimCampion @StefanKohl You guys won!

Congratulations, @Asaf!! You had a cheering section on math.se. So happy for you!!

@AlecRhea Thank you!
@AsafKaragila Thank you! (But where do you see the results announced?)

@StefanKohl You can download the ballot file and run it yourself.
Or you can spend a few more excruciating minutes waiting for @Catija to process the results! :-)

8:07 PM
@AsafKaragila Ah, thank you!

@Asaf has everyone beat on accessing results, as long proven even on math.se!! Saves us all some nail biting!

Chill, y'all.
I'm working on it.

Congratulations to all! After all @Asaf did announce the results on time just like he used to do for math.se

@ParamanandSingh Oh, c'mon, I'm running in this election, I have horses in this race. I needed to know.

Wait, what happened on math.se?

8:14 PM
@WillSawin Nothing?

Just a cheering section for their favorite moderator I think, nothing fussworthy

@WillSawin We rely on Asaf, on math.se, to get the results virtually instantaneously!!

@amWhy the results of what?

Results of mod elections

Got it. Didn't realize there were so many mod elections there that this would be noticed and remembered.

8:16 PM
It's a free service provided by Asaf for every election on mathse.
That's apart from his mod duties

At least this time I didn't have to make a meta post.
That's where the real hassle is.

There was a high correlation between "candidate score" and victory here, and a low correlation between votes on the questionnaire page and victory. Both probably what I would have expected.

@AsafKaragila I had the meta page on MO opened, and in anticipation!

@WillSawin Yeah, that's very new to me. On MSE it's usually somewhat correlated. But then again, I received the most upvoted (tied with Daniel), I just had a lot of downvotes too.

8:19 PM
Ok people, I waited so long to know the results. It's way beyond sleep time in India. So bye and good night!!

and Stefan joined fairly late, so he had less time to get upvotes, while Daniel joined early, and had the most time.

@ParamanandSingh Sleep in, @ParamanandSingh, if you can. Sleep well!

Disclaimer: results announced by Asaf are not offiicial because they do not take into account any recounts due to hanging chads :)

@TimCampion Hah!

Q: 2021 Community Moderator Election Results

CatijaMathOverflow's second moderator election has come to a close, the votes have been tallied, and the three new moderators are: They'll be joining the existing crew shortly — please thank them for volunteering, and share your assistance and advice with them as they learn the ropes! For details on...

Thanks for your patience.

8:29 PM
@Catija Thanks for your efforts!

Now... to actually give out those diamonds...
:P

the transferable votes ended up not mattering, in the sense that the 3 candidates with the top first round vote percentage won

That's a nice sign of robustness I suppose

I realize that I didn't understand exactly how the single transferrable vote would work and there's more reason to vote strategically than I expected
it's interesting that a significant number (>25) of people didn't vote for any of the top 4 candidates - I wonder who they voted for and what they based that decision on.

@WillSawin You can analyse the ballot file for these sort of statistics.

8:35 PM
Well, not for the "what they based that decision on" part!
Looking at the ballots, it seems more people than I expected voted for just 1 or 2 candidates

So the reason there are fractional votes is that when a candidate exceeds the threshold required to win, those whose vote is currently allocated to that candidate gets fractionally re-allocated to their next choice basically?
The fraction coming from how much is required to get the candidate back down to the threshold?

Congrats to @TimCampion, and @StefanKohl, as well! And I want to personally thank you for your response to me when I commented on a comment below another candidate. You made it clear to me, you have all the qualities to make a good mod! Aww, darn, it's only Tuesday! These results call for a celebration!

@amWhy Thank you!

@TimCampion I did another "robustness" check and tried a bunch of different voting methods. You three seem to be the winners in every one.

I think the newly selected moderators are all excellent additions to the team; I'm looking forward to seeing the site improve further under your stewardship(s) :)

8:55 PM
@amWhy @AlecRhea Thanks, and thanks for contributing to a productive and healthy election!
@AsafKaragila @StefanKohl I am perhaps being a bit over-cautious, but I am personally not signing the moderator agreement until I run it by the MO board, just to be sure that they are on board with it.

@Shog: Thanks for the edit. That's the second time I beat you to it. :-) — Asaf Karagila ♦ Oct 15 '13 at 20:11

And just who I was just commenting to elsewhere, appears, @quid! ;D

But back then @Asaf was very slow it took more than two minutes... ;-)

Q: 2013 Election Results

Asaf KaragilaThe election process is over, and now it is time to declare the winners: Good luck in the new position, I'm sure that you'll prove to be a great addition to the community and its moderators! On the same breath, I wanted to express my (and the community's) endless gratitude to the leaving Ant...

@AsafKaragila Congrats moderator Asaf, I knew you were going to win, I knew it since the day I realized you were running as candidate, since @MartinSleziak posted the elections posts on meta chat... Thanks.

Thanks!

9:03 PM
Congratulations to @Tim and @Stefan, and Don't. Migrate. Crap. Especially not to math.se :-)
6

@quid Thanks a lot! And I'll do my best to migrate there only questions which are a good fit for math.se!

9:35 PM
@quid Thanks, and I will keep that in mind! lots to learn
