@reuns I do wish we had a better picture of exactly what moderation entails. But the idea of the math.se mods handling MO is a nonstarter for several reasons. First, there's no indication that the MO mods need additional help; they are doing just fine. My impression is that the main reason we're even having an election is just because it's been awhile since we last did so and there's inherent value in rotating these duties a bit.
@TimCampion OTOH, I thought in the past about the idea of outsourcing ("hiring") mods to some people who are not MO users. Considering that a typical MO user has a lot duties IRL (coming mostly from academia) means that there isn't much time for moderating.
As you can see, the MO mods often ignore questions on MO that only they can answer. (As an example you can take your question: What do moderators do these days?)
My impression is that the mods on Mathematics are more responsive on meta (and in chat).
Of course, this is just my personal impression. I am not sure what would be good statistics to measure such things and compare mod involvement on meta between sites of various sizes. (Mathematics is about 10 times the size of MathOverflow.)
I have noticed that, during elections for moderators, the candidates are awarded a "candidate score", computed from their activity on MO.
Is its algorithm public, so that I be able to compute it for myself, to know where I stand?
In particular, I have noticed that it depends on the number of ba...
The way stats used to be shown during a moderator election have recently been changed. It now shows a "candidate score", which appears to be an amalgamation of total rep and certain badges, awarding a point for each badge and each 1000 rep. This change is retroactive, so all the previous and clos...
How can I find out what my election candidate score is?
For example, on Ask Ubuntu I'd like to see exactly what score I'd have out of 40.
A SEDE query would work but I'd like one nicely presented - an equivalent of flair would be really nice!
@EmilJeřábek: Yes, the first of those posts fully addresses my questions, and the second one is useful too. Maybe write a brief answer containing those two links, allowing me to close this question? — Alex M.17 mins ago
The criteria are described exactly in What are the details on the "candidate score" which shows during an election?. Moreover, What would my Election Candidate score be? includes a link to a SEDE query that lets one compute their candidate score.
There was a high correlation between "candidate score" and victory here, and a low correlation between votes on the questionnaire page and victory. Both probably what I would have expected.
@WillSawin Yeah, that's very new to me. On MSE it's usually somewhat correlated. But then again, I received the most upvoted (tied with Daniel), I just had a lot of downvotes too.
MathOverflow's second moderator election has come to a close, the votes have been tallied, and the three new moderators are:
They'll be joining the existing crew shortly — please thank them for volunteering, and share your assistance and advice with them as they learn the ropes!
For details on...
I realize that I didn't understand exactly how the single transferrable vote would work and there's more reason to vote strategically than I expected
it's interesting that a significant number (>25) of people didn't vote for any of the top 4 candidates - I wonder who they voted for and what they based that decision on.
So the reason there are fractional votes is that when a candidate exceeds the threshold required to win, those whose vote is currently allocated to that candidate gets fractionally re-allocated to their next choice basically?
The fraction coming from how much is required to get the candidate back down to the threshold?
Congrats to @TimCampion, and @StefanKohl, as well! And I want to personally thank you for your response to me when I commented on a comment below another candidate. You made it clear to me, you have all the qualities to make a good mod! Aww, darn, it's only Tuesday! These results call for a celebration!
I think the newly selected moderators are all excellent additions to the team; I'm looking forward to seeing the site improve further under your stewardship(s) :)
@amWhy @AlecRhea Thanks, and thanks for contributing to a productive and healthy election!
@AsafKaragila @StefanKohl I am perhaps being a bit over-cautious, but I am personally not signing the moderator agreement until I run it by the MO board, just to be sure that they are on board with it.
The election process is over, and now it is time to declare the winners:
Good luck in the new position, I'm sure that you'll prove to be a great addition to the community and its moderators!
On the same breath, I wanted to express my (and the community's) endless gratitude to the leaving Ant...
@AsafKaragila Congrats moderator Asaf, I knew you were going to win, I knew it since the day I realized you were running as candidate, since @MartinSleziak posted the elections posts on meta chat... Thanks.
