Q: How exactly do you calculate changing a Line into a Cone?

CharlyHow exactly do you calculate changing a Line into a Cone? I am asking for the purposes of the Shape Breath Metabreath feat. As the feat says: If you have a line-shaped breath weapon, you can opt to shape it into a cone. Likewise, if you have a cone-shaped breath weapon, you can shape it into a l...

@NautArch You see my message in discord about your bounty task?

Anyone attempt to watch Zack Snider's justice league?

@NautArch No, but I did read the wikipedia article on whale sharks this morning. It was thoroughly engaging, 8/10, would recommend.

@ThomasMarkov Diving with whale sharks is on my bucket list.
And hammerheads

Ive been swimming with dolphins and otters, never done whale sharks though.

12:41 PM
@NautArch That's a large bucket

@AncientSwordRage Yes it is, chum.
Also, if anyone has dogs this stuff is amazing. I'm not sold on the shedding reduction, but they've been smelling great for 3 weeks.

@NautArch Do they know that "safely" is spelled wrong on the packaging?

@NautArch Just be careful about the grape in that, I've heard it's bad for dogs

grape seed oil. It's possible the thing about grapes that is bad for dogs isnt a component of seed oil.

We only have cats here, and the last time they got washed with shampoo they had a full on feud for half a week until the shampoo smell dissipated
@ThomasMarkov true

12:48 PM
Internet says grape seed oil is totally safe for dogs

@ThomasMarkov thank you thomas/internet

1:41 PM
@ThomasMarkov my recollection is no one is actually sure why exactly are grapes so surprisingly toxic to dogs (though of course we might have converse evidence for particular compounds in grapes)

@ThomasMarkov eek, probably not

1:59 PM
I decided that if I'm ever sent back in time and become a pirate, my name would be Barbamigas, which simultaneously would mean Beard Friend and Crumb Beard

@AncientSwordRage And now I'm craving migas.

3:00 PM
Second set of eyes here?
looks like those chips are basically equivalent or that the older one is actually better?

Nominally the same stats but the newer seems to have higher reported actual speeds.

3:29 PM
@NautArch you're welcome

4:02 PM
@Someone_Evil that's what it looks like to me also

@Someone_Evil turned out not to matter. Dell has 1.5 month shipping delay for the laptop.

4:55 PM
you'd likely not notice much practical difference between them but the newer one is better. (higher turbo frequency etc.)

@Carcer went with ryzen 7 surface laptop 3

fair enough

delivers in 4 days, ha!
much better than 1.5 months
considering that employee's computer is dying (5 year old macbook pro)

Now Todd Kennrick has left DND Beyond, I find myself just not watching their youtue videos anymore

@AncientSwordRage I never did in the first place. Was he a good presenter?
@NautArch We expect basic research on questions. I have responded to your comment.

@KorvinStarmast yeah he was, seemed down to earth and interesting to talk to.
He has his own YT channel now

@AncientSwordRage That's good, I suppose, for him.

yeah I think so

Maybe we need a meta Q&A about whether the optional and expensive source books should be assumed when evaluating if a question is well-researched. i.e., can we fairly expect that all askers must first consult the rules text if the rules text requires them to purchase optional source books? In this case, is it fair to expect that everyone who asks questions must purchase a copy of the DMG, Tasha's Guide, and all the other books?

I think it reasonable to expect that someone doing the worldbuilding for DMing a dnd-5e game have read the DMG.
No, it is not reasonable to expect every person to ever play dnd to read the DMG, but that isn't a fair comparison to what we have here.

7:21 PM
So there's a minimum purchase requirement before questions should be asked here?

For asking good questions, yeah, probably.
At least about some things.
How can I do [thing from the DMG]? is not a great question because "thing from the DMG" is the canonical answer.

But if the asker doesn't own the DMG, then they wouldn't know if the DMG has the answer.

"Thing from the DMG is insufficient for my objective for these reasons, is there any other material that gives guidance for doing this" is a better question.
@MikeQ Yeah.
Nobody is voting to close the question.
It's answerable.
It's just not a great question in its current form.
"Shows lack of research effort" is a perfectly valid reason for a downvote.

A: What Do We Do With "Read The Book To Me" Questions?

doppelgreenerThere's at least two kinds of easily confusable questions here though: I hear the DMG has rules for X. I don't have the DMG. What are the rules for X? Are there rules for X? What are they? #1 is a deeply problematic question that asks us to engage in violating copyright: the person should buy...

8:04 PM
I don't see this as a simple read the book to me thing, either. This is trickier DM stuff, and not everyone understands the DMG or how to use it - that's a big part of why we're here. I mean, there are some RTFBTM questions, but this doesn't quite seem like it.
@KorvinStarmast If you feel like it's downvote worthy, that's fine, but citing specifically where in the DMG answers can be found is an answer. THat's all I was really saying there.

8:33 PM
@Mitch I too am beginning to feel like my norton has been flogged for too long. I have been patient, made suggestions, given advice....the example sucks, but for some reason the OP is fixated on it. I am done with this and VTCing....is it possible there is a spam element here? — Cascabel 27 mins ago

Q: Where is the 'Show the true face of Death' move detailed?

Emma LawThe sidebar at the foot of page 225 (section dealing with 'Making Monsters') refers as follows: Oh yeah, dead and ghostly is disturbing. That gives it the Terrifying tag and I’ll give it the move “show the true face of death.” Where do I find that move detailed? Or is it a Custom Move?

@ThomasMarkov no need to jump in

8:51 PM
I'm not super familiar with it, but it might be an example of (or related to) crytyping (which is mostly around on tumblr-sphere which now includes a swath of twitter IIRC). Here's my source on it, the mention is around the 3:20 mark

@AncientSwordRage I didn’t earn 50,000 fake Internet points in eight months to not throw it around when my friends are getting picked on.

This is bizarre, like some sort of ancient grudge.

Don't feed the trolls. Flag as rude, then move on.

@MikeQ What about force-feeding trolls? I don't think I've tried that yet.
Maybe troll foie-gras is a thing?

Trolls regenerate something like 10-20 hp per round. Engaging them isn't productive.

@MikeQ But troll foie-gras!

@Someone_Evil that's super interesting
@ThomasMarkov I'm not saying it's appreciated, I'm saying it's not worthwhile.
@MikeQ I'm wondering if there's something more to their accusations of being bullied on sci-fi and fantasy, as well as RPG?

9:18 PM
@AncientSwordRage you underestimate how worthwhile it is to me to waste time on the internet. :P

@ThomasMarkov a stackexchanger after my own heart it seems

@BESW definitely some good strats here re: sticking it to trolls -- teaming up on them and repeatedly, yet calmly, bashing their trolling with factual info forces them to escalate, which gives you a much stronger stance to report them to the platform

I've recently heard it posited that the best thing you can do in response to someone arguing you in bad faith is to ask them why they hold that position and try to convince you; take you for a walk in their paper mansion and try not to instantly fall through the floor.
(In the context of online / new media discourse about irrelevant topics like Potato Head.)

11:45 PM
There's always nuance based on where the conversation is happening (don't flood the victim's mentions), how public it is (private conversations can be more about rehabilitation, public conversations should be more about educating the audience and supporting the victim), etc., but ignoring trolls is always going to silence their victims and give them space to escalate and recruit.

@Powerdork eheheh. I basically bow out of those culture-warrior topics as a matter of rule anyway, partly because they're so bloody irrelevant

Some topics (especially when the subject is whether or not a person or category of people deserve human rights) shouldn't be publicly treated as something that might have a point, at all.
Which is why calmly correcting is a more universally useful tactic than providing a platform. The goal is to NOT give them an opportunity to try and persuade the audience.
(The nature of the engagement changes dramatically if it's a private conversation; you're not concerned about it turning into a recruitment speech, and they're more likely to be able to admit they're wrong if they aren't in front a crowd, so it's more productive to focus on rehabilitation in private, and more productive to focus on deplatforming in public.)

@BESW yeah, the other factor is that while on major platforms, most troll encounters are basically random encounters AFAICT (not saying that different folks don't run into them at different rates), it's possible that some arenas may have persistent "house trolls" that continue despite extreme levels of deplatforming (Techdirt's infamous ootb comes to mind), and knowing the local rules of engagement can be helpful in those circumstances

Aye. And pay attention to the victim and the context of the initial contact. There are demographics who get specifically targeted on platforms where people outside those demographics only get random encounters; similarly there are specific terms and phrases that get targeted.

A white guy on Twitter and a Black woman on Twitter, posting the exact same content, are going to have dramatically different levels of harassment, and the nature of the harassment will be notably different as well.

@BESW ...which makes me wonder what context cues the harassers are using as a basis for targeting
