7:36 AM
@Deusovi you around by any chance?

yeah, what's up?

I realized my connect-wall puzzle is a bit underclued, so I thought of a way to modify the puzzle to fix that. Trouble is, that invalidates about 15% of progress posters have have already made
Think this is a good move?

hm, up to you
"invalidates" as in you're changing the content of the puzzle? (say, some of the clues?)

yes, and adding a small element that helps bridge the next step

might be good to ask the posters what they think

7:39 AM
good idea
will do that
thanks!
@Stiv and @msh210 thoughts on above?

Intrsting, I also need Deus for something
Tho anyone who can edit the C4 spreadsheet could help as well. In any case, I can't find GentlePurpleRain's email address-- I have checked his(?) Puzzling profile and I have also checked the "document details" of the C4 spreadsheet on both mobile and desktop. I couldn't make a single email address show up.
To be fair, I did send a request for edit access, but that was months ago, and I'm not sure whether or not to follow up with a direct email.

7:57 AM
(maybe ping Deus)

Let's see
@Deusovi

8:12 AM
@Ankoganit I don't know PSE rules/mores.
@oAlt @GentlePurpleRain please see the message I'm here responding to

@msh210 I don't think PSE rules disallow this; if @Stiv and you are fine with it, I'll go ahead and make the edit
If not, I can always just add a hint

the rules don't disallow it, and i think it's better long-term to edit (even if short-term it's an inconvenience for answerers)
@oAlt hm, might be best to make a new copy of the archive sheet entirely then, and i can give out access?
are you looking to help update it?

8:28 AM
re the current c4: cat is a slang term for a person so cats = folk, and cats is a musical... could be a triple definition if cats = cover somehow

8:49 AM
@Ankoganit No worries - happy to modify my answer once the edit is in :)

Good to know!
Will edit in an hour

@Deusovi yup

Oh wait, I didn't notice the CORONA sliding puzzle has got a (so big) bounty...

hahahah

I didn't mean to snipe it, I just coincidentally started working on it before the bounty started

9:06 AM
@oAlt neat! made a copy here - go ahead and request edit access and i'll give it to you

@Stiv edited :)

okie, will do so in a while
done deus

9:25 AM
alright, you should have edit access now!
@Ankoganit Can you double-check the bottom right clue? (Should it be "the bier"?)

thanks deus :D

@Ankoganit Noted, thanks and editing my answer now...

hm, i see A Thing but don't know the specifics of how to execute it
...no, never mind. it looks like a pattern holds up most of the time but not all

@Deusovi I think "beer" is correct. (I'm using an uncommon variant spelling of the word, if that helps)

ahh
well, not seeing it and i should probably sleep soon. good luck, stiv (and others working on the puzzle)!

9:44 AM
Thanks @Deusovi - it's got interesting!

(also i now see what i was missing from your answer - counting is hard)

@Stiv looks good so far :)

@Ankoganit Thanks. Not yet spotted the next step (there are a lot!) so will think on it during breaks today - unfortunately my working day now begins proper! Will be interested if other puzzlers spot it first :)

Sure, no rush

10:07 AM
ok, here's where my non-expertise in cryptics shows:
How does "the queen" clue ER?

@oAlt It stands for 'Elizabeth Regina'
'Regina' means 'Reigning queen'

@oAlt it's a standard abbreviation for "Elizabeth regina" (Queen Elizabeth). If I'm not mistaken, it appears on every current British coin.

ahhh
so "EIIR" is not the only accepted version of the abbreviation it seems
(or maybe thats the current one idk)
but thanks

Q: Some mathematical magic

quaragueThe magician will perform some mathematical magic. He asks his guest to secretly pick any two digit number and then perform a number of operations on it. If the number is even, divide by 2, if it is odd subtract 3 and then divide by 2. Multiply by 3. Add 5. If the number has 3 digits, subtract 1...

It seems I am mistaken.

Whoever last edited the C4 archive, you spelled hexomino's username wrong, hehe.
(probably @Deusovi ? idk but yea it's still there at row 1694 of the original sheet :0 )

Q: freeiqtest.info question - what number should replace the question mark?

pilotjoker999I took an online IQ test(http://www.freeiqtest.info) and encountered this question: I could not find out any valid pattern that determined what number is in the third section of the pie chart(the one that is represented with the question mark). The only patterns I found were very arbitrary, some...

Q: Bridges of Carcass County

jafeThis is a Carcass Walking puzzle. The objective is to place the given cities into the grid, connect them with roads, draw one river across the grid, and find places for the given number of cloisters. The river (blue squares) runs from one edge of the grid to another in one continuous path which ...

Q: Best "Cryptic Clue Chat Chains" (CCCC) Questions

GentlePurpleRainSince November 2016, there has been a game ongoing in The Sphinx's Lair called Cryptic Clue Chat Chains. It involves one person thinking up a cryptic clue, such as might be found in a Cryptic Crossword, and everyone else trying to solve it. We have been maintaining an archive of these clues, but...

Q: Connect Wall - Grid Puzzles Edition!

athinThis is an entry for Fortnightly Topic Challenge #42: Wordless Connecting Walls. Huge thanks to bobble and Deusovi for playtesting! >< And hey, this one may also mark my 100-day puzzle here in PSE, aye-aye the golden Socratic badge! XD The $16$ grid puzzles above should be divided into $4$ cat...

11:45 AM
Tbf I also considered making a grid deduction connect wall but I abandoned that quickly and am trying to find better alternatives
same jafe omg

@jafe ah yes, that was mind-blowing
I remember being all "did that just happen?"

Q: What is so unique about these four numbers?

DrDThese four numbers look like ordinary four numbers. But I found something unique about these four that I do not think is true for any other set of numbers-- unless you raise the bar-may be. So what is that unique properrty shared by these four? ** 1644 1646 1664 1666 **

Q: Meta post where users can share scripts people will find useful when solving/making puzzles

risky mysteriesIs there a Puzzling Meta StackExchange post where users can share useful scripts people might use a lot when solving/making puzzles? If so, can someone direct me to it? If not, can we create one? I'm talking about tools we can't find anywhere else, so no copying from other sources, and no links.

Find it weird that an answer to an IQ test question would have more votes than the question itself
It's weird to me because I'm not interested in those types of questions at all, and so I disregard both question and answer
But then again, I'm only one person...

low-quality questions can still have a high-quality answers

Seriously, can ppl explain why they downvote?
It's so annoying

example: an answer of score 88 to a question of score 8
88
A: Quick!!! You got only 30 seconds

AnonNo real-world car can accelerate faster than $5g$, so the maximum acceleration of the car is under $50m/s^2$. Even if the car instantly decelerates (against a wall or something), the fact that $P$ can do the trip in $1$ second means that $A$ and $B$ are at most $25m$ apart (more realistically $1m...

Epic
@jafe dang what an imbalance

@jafe hm, I thought we banned lateral-thinking answers to non-lateral-thinking questions
Or is this from before that

2:58 PM
I hate it when that happens... it's not perfectly balanced, as all things should be

the answerer felt so desperately that they were right...

@PrinceNorthLæraðr Happens to us all, sadly - I think almost every single one of my puzzles ends up with a solitary downvote with no explanation whatsoever, and you just think "Do you really know what that button does and when you should press it??"
If it's just "Nah, I don't like this one" then that is NOT sufficient reason to downvote.
If there is a problem, TELL ME!

(Of course, if comments already explain the same reason from somebody else, I would say a downvote on the question and an upvote on the comment would be fine...)
"Don't like Pokémon? Skip over this question..."
I think often people who visit from HNQs treat the buttons like the thumbs up/down beneath a YouTube video.
Which isn't their intention - it's not a gauge of popularity, it's a gauge of quality.
(and breathe)
Oddly enough, my Pokémon connect-wall of sorts from earlier this year suffered the same fate!

Q: What you gotta do?

StivYou have 10 groups of 4 words: DUO, IRON, LINKS, ROCK ICE, LED, METAL, TIC DRILL, PI, WIN, WOO BRA, IGNITE, LOOM, RUBBISH AIR, DUST, GO, PAT AUDI, AURA, MEOW, SPEW GRIMM, HOOT, MUD, TAIL ASK, BELL, CATER, MEDIC BLITZ, CRUST, PLUS, SQUIRT CHERUB, SEE, SHIN, STEEL And another group of 10 words:...

Maybe there's just one very angry yet silent Poké-hater among us!

It's probably PETA

3:09 PM
@PrinceNorthLæraðr You're asking each of us in chat (who downvotes) why he downvotes in general? Or you want everyone on the site to explain his every downvote?
@PrinceNorthLæraðr thanks for the earworm :-(

I think that was a rhetorical question

@Ankoganit It probably is

I think there should at least be a reasonable expectation that the first downvoter should explain their reasoning at the very least.

Yeah
But it ruins the anonymity of voting

To be fair though I almost never downvote; I have only done so like 3 times, and they were all on answers that did not answer the question. (Two of them were removed/deleted, but one of them is still there but it's been dormant for months and I don't want to revive it just yet)

A: Commentless downvotes

Shog9 Commentless downvotes do very little to improve the site. Oh, but you're wrong! Voting is at least - and probably more - important than commenting when it comes to improving the quality of the information presented by the site. Up-voted questions are given more visibility, while down-voted q...

(see also comments on that answer)

I get the anonymity argument, but I would argue that constructive feedback is vital on Puzzling - if somebody continues to produce low-quality puzzles because nobody is advising them what their problems are then I would say the community is failing that user

I don't we should require downvoters to explain themselves
But maybe we could establish it as a common courtesy

'Courtesy' is more the word here, agreed - and if you're prepared to downvote you should be prepared to explain why if the user asks for feedback
I must say though that I think in general the Puzzling community is very good at offering helpful advice

It really depends on the circumstances. If an author is a repeat 'offender' and something was explained to him on a previous post, no need to repeat yourself. If a previous commenter on the same post said roughly what you want to, certainly no need to repeat it.

Agreed

3:21 PM
(Again, this is my take and is based mostly on my experience on another SE site, not PSE.)
And sometimes a downvote can be for reasons that the voter cannot, just then, take the time to articulate politely and clearly.

That doesn't mean he shouldn't downvote.

I just had to change some pokemons in my connect wall- that just feels wrong

@PrinceNorthLæraðr "I had to change some Pokemons" like "I have to change the baby, he smells"?
:-)

3:23 PM
oh it's been > a day since my C4 hint. Hmm.
@GentlePurpleRain hiya. I think you can ignore my ping above -- they seem to have worked it out.
Sorry for the hassle.

@oAlt I've added you as an editor to the CCCC archive. Sorry, I must have missed your request.
@msh210 I just added them.

it's fine, still thank you very much @GentlePurpleRain

@GentlePurpleRain !!!!!! Long time no see!

Hello @GentlePurpleRain !
Been a while

It's been ages

3:25 PM
I've been lurking periodically, but not very active.

@bobble He's another geezer, I think :P

I don't think we've met. holds out hand to shake

Do crowns have hands?
@GentlePurpleRain Life's been busy?

Nice to meet you. But no handshakes right now. COVID, you know.
2
It has.

not even virtual ones? :(

3:26 PM
Don't want to spread virtual viruses... :P

so, are you a geezer?

C4 hints: (1) The last letter is S. (2) Part of the clue is an indicator.
3

@msh210 Well, OBVIOUS musical is an anagram indicator of folk, so the word is KLOF, an ancient Gareth-esque word for cover[ing] used in Norwegian vikings #badc4solutions

@bobble I'm not sure how you define geezer. I'm probably older than most of the folks on here. Mid-forties.

Wow, you're younger than Jeremy!
Pretty sure Gareth is older too :P

3:29 PM
@PrinceNorthLæraðr right answer, wrong solution to get there

Yes, I think Gareth is older than I am.

(kidding)

(oh just gonna lay this down as well: the first request for edit access I did re: C4 sheets was with my non-school account, BUT that which had my first name initial and last name, and now I'm thinking twice about using an account with such "revealingness"-- so it was okay if you missed that request too GPR)

@oAlt I think that's the one I just added. Do you want me to remove it?

@oAlt but you use that as your username here, too, so what's the big deal, Oregano?

3:32 PM
Okay so "musical" is most likely the indicator
"Folk" can mean a person or man

It's possible '-' is the indicator

Oh wait... Hold on....

Interesting enough, "COVE" means a man

For removal, maybe

Oopsie.. so you did notice it hahah

3:33 PM
Is "R" something to do with a musical?

@Ankoganit that would be evil. (No comment on whether I did it here.)

@msh210 Well, you are evil so

@oAlt calling you Oregano from now on

@GentlePurpleRain yeah, if you could remove that and add the email in my profile instead, that would be great :0

Definitely not the vilest thing done in C4

3:34 PM
@Ankoganit true

Oh the last letter is an S

@msh210 I'm afraid I do not know the context D:

(not even by me :-) )

I keep forgetting

@oAlt this

Dec 19 '16 at 8:37, by Deusovi
CCCC: Competent? l pass (8)
This is a good candidate for C4 devilry

yeah, the context of that @msh210 hahah

Oh! The def is cover, synonym of folk is part of the charades, and you remove a musical from that synonym of folk, I think

@Ankoganit ouch
@oAlt "had my first name initial and last name"

@PrinceNorthLæraðr that's what I was thinking too

I was saying "O" is your first name initial and "Alt" is your last name

3:38 PM
Hahahahah

@oAlt Done. I accidentally added the same email address again, so you might have got a second invite, but then I eventually managed to get it correct and added oalt2900@gmail.com.

(I actually used to have a neighbor whose last name was Alt.)

@Ankoganit PASS(over) and EGIS are the two defs that fit the "ends with an S" clue. EGIS looks hopeful

Yup, I got a second invite but it's all good I got the other oAlt invite as well
@msh210 that's interesting. Not even Alternative, or Alternate, or Alter... just Alt

@PrinceNorthLæraðr interesting

3:42 PM
@oAlt yep. First name was not Oregano, you'll be surprised to learn.

@Ankoganit Looking under synonyms for "folk" though, and I'm not getting anything promising

intrsting

Yeah, same

In terms of musical, I can't think of any really short musicals besides "Q" (from Avenue Q)

cats? hair? rent?

3:43 PM
@PrinceNorthLæraðr Cats

@msh210 Hehe
@bobble Isn't the full title "Hairspray"?

It's possible the whole '- is indicator' idea is a wild goose chase

@PrinceNorthLæraðr I think they're two different plays.

@Ankoganit Right, but how is folk or musical an indicator
Maybe it's the other way around
Musical-folk?

Hm, that wouldn't make sense syntactically

3:44 PM
folk "removed from" musical?

@msh210 ...yes.

I suppose 'cover' could be an indicator as in 'outer letters' but then there's nothing to do with that

MASS is another word for cover? weird
Actually something about MASS stands out to me
Well Qat spat out GENS for folk

@PrinceNorthLæraðr is it?

3:49 PM
Could it be GENTRIES - RENT = EGIS? (based on the conversation here)?

I think qat just spits out related words, not necessarily synonyms
That'd involve indirect anagramming

Nice find though

@GentlePurpleRain that'd require anagramming (and, incidentally :-) , was not my intention)

True. We'll keep trying, then.

3:50 PM
@GentlePurpleRain Yeah that was a cool find

(also I panicked and thought I still had no edit privileges, but I had double checked on another device and saw that I in fact had now. Thanks for the second time GPR)

"Musical" doesn't have to refer to a musical. It could have something to do with actual music.

@PrinceNorthLæraðr yeah

Maybe it should be parsed as "musical C" "over" (not sure if that's allowed)

3:53 PM
I don't think so

@GentlePurpleRain oh my god
Really hope that's not it

Is that allowed?

I think that would be frowned upon, at best.

PASS might be a good def as well

Could "musical" possibly be a "sounds-like" indicator?

3:57 PM
Ooh
Never seen it used that way, but possibly

Maybe. But there's only three words here

Right, so a word for "folk" that sounds like a word for "cover".

and one would have to have a different number of letters, to prevent answer ambiguity

Caste.. CATS lol

3:59 PM
That's probably not it; just brainstorming.
