so...virtual school is a total mess here.
my 8 year old is miserable

@NautArch virtual school for kids is so bad :(

it's freaking awful. Especially when half the day consists of "here are 3 worksheets to keep you busy for 3 hours"

@NautArch That was my recollection of a great deal of in person school: "Here's a thing you can finish in 15 minutes. We'll collect it in 45 minutes."

8:38 PM
@NautArch I'm so sorry to hear it. Remind me: is it two days in-person, three virtual, or are you all-virtual up there right now?

@nitsua60 oh, we've got something different here. We're doing 5 days a week, but in two cohorts. A morning and an afternoon.
So each kid is in class either in the morning or afternoon and virtual for the other half.
It's...awful.
Before they went to hybrid, he had a friend coming for the full virtual and it was great. Then they split the class and separated them.

@GcL I had the great fortune to, later in life, be a student teacher at my own grammar school. They confirmed for me a recollection that I'd always wondered about: yes, they gave me the work for the week on Mondays and, yes, just sent me to the library for free reading most Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Might not have been the best for my socialization, but I sure read a lot!
@NautArch O, God. It's like they took the worst model we'd thought of, and made it worse!

@nitsua60 I had a similar situation in school for different reasons. It was nice to have a week's worth of work that could one could just dive into in the serenity of a big table in the library.

@nitsua60 yeah :(
They fog the school between sessions.
But i'm kinda not happy with the acceptance of some students wearing face shields instead of masks (Mass approves this) and that they have indoor mask breaks.
Our rate here is super low, but it doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies so I pulled him from hybrid.

@nitsua60 Ours is pretty similar — this week should be the last we’re all virtual for a while, then we move to A/B cohorts. Everyone’s virtual on Monday then tues/weds are cohort A on campus and thurs/fri are cohort B on campus. Cohort C is all virtual and is opt in (so by default you go to campus but i think about half the class chose cohort c)
Everyone’s masked though
And there’s a lot of things to keep social distancing

@BardicWizard How do you feel about the situation? Are there any upsides you didn't expect?

As much as this fall's been super-hard in a lot of ways, I and my students are soooooo happy that we can all just be on campus and feel pretty "normal" about things.

@GcL won’t know until next week since that’s when it starts
