12:03 AM
@samcarter_left_tex.se --It's day 2 that is the real beast; starts around 3 a.m. local time, and doesn't give up until 2 a.m. the next morning. A few talks I really wanted to watch are during serious sleep time, so I just hope the writeups are good.
@manooooh -- The leaders of the tutorial have led a tutorial along with the in-person TUG meeting for many years. (I've never attended, but they have always been appreciated. It's rather a thankless task, really.)

5 hours later…
5:01 AM
I've removed the superfluous material and bumped it into the review queue. I'd really like to know the answer!
If there's a different SE site where it would be better to post than here, please let me know!

2 hours later…
6:52 AM
@uhoh your question is about the PDF standard and printing, not about LaTeX. On how you could measure it: some viewers (e.g., Foxit) have a measurement tool, a quick search on the internet might help. Still, this is nothing TeX related.

7:02 AM
@barbarabeeton I also will have to fall back to the recorded videos for the talks of Ross Moore and following. As an isolated event they would be doable, but not if there are other sessions a couple of hours before and after :) Scheduling with all these time zones is really not easy. Other online conferences now often use only half a day (late evening in Asia, afternoon in Europe and morning in US), but of course this doubles the number of days and events get very long then.

@samcarter_left_tex.se I will have to watch everything as a recorded video :(

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz :(
@uhoh I don't have time right now to search, but I think there was a video discussing the scaling issue of the image. Either from youtube.com/channel/UCYNbYGl89UUowy8oXkipC-Q or youtube.com/user/sixtysymbols
(thinking about it, I think it was on 60 symbols)

7:33 AM
@uhoh I think you can simplify the problem. If you download the source from arxiv, you'll find the image Fig9cmBH.pdf and it is included as \includegraphics[height=9.35cm]{Fig9cmBH}. So assuming the claim that this is 1:1 is correct, you'll only have to scale the image to have a height of 9.35cm (hold a ruler to your screen until this is true)
@DavidCarlisle Slide from a conference about open source software I'm currently at ^^^^
(maybe they just say this because we don't have a @UlrikeFischer)

7:53 AM
@samcarter_left_tex.se you don't know whether the file contains a white border...

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz It does, I'll have to trust the authors that they did take this into account

1 hour later…
9:06 AM
@samcarter_left_tex.se okay I can download the source from here and I have only one file named 1909.11090 no additional figures are downloaded. When I view that as text and I've found that bit here and again here but I'm not sure how to display the exact thing that I need to scale to 9.35 cm. There doesn't seem to be a separate image to work with, at least not as a separately downloaded file
Since it's simply a filled circle it's probably just generated as some primitive shape. I'd thought that this was done using LaTeX but apparently not.
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz okay I understand now that it's not LaTeX now, thanks!

@uhoh Rename the file 1909.11090 to 1909.11090.tar.gz and uncompress to get the image

@samcarter_left_tex.se Or just unzip (I use 7-zip so just right-clicked and opened)

@JosephWright But then I don't have my zip program in the "open with..." list and have to search it in the whole list of programs :)

@samcarter_left_tex.se :)
@samcarter_left_tex.se Fun reading the source: I wonder what will happen when people using {\bf 1. ...} for sections are asked about tagged PDFs ;) (@UlrikeFischer)
Also
\def\beq{\begin{equation}\begin{aligned}}
\def\eeq{\end{aligned}\end{equation}}
:(
@DavidCarlisle, @egreg ^^^

yo'
@JosephWright they're just missing \! that should surround {aligned}

9:18 AM
@JosephWright In the daily email with the new papers on arxiv the code for titles and abstract are shown as plain text. Every second paper uses such stuff. Reading this mail can be quite painful

@samcarter_left_tex.se I get that; it's a shame, and it is actually an issue: as I'm in an area using Word submissions, I've no idea what happens about clean-up of TeX sources for published versions

@samcarter_left_tex.se aha! There it is :-) The black circle is about 0.960 the size of the white frame, that multitplied by 9.35 cm gives 8.98 (essentially 9.0) cm. Okay This is exactly what I needed, thank you for your patience and help!

@uhoh You're welcome!

@samcarter_left_tex.se however now the rest of my day's productivity is shot because I'm going to be watching sixty-symbols videos, I've got a lot of catching up to do :-)
I didn't know about Dr. Becky so I'll save those for the weekend.

@uhoh :) I'm sorry! So should we prepare for a wave of interesting questions on astro.se?
@uhoh Dr Becky is really great. I met her at a conference some time ago and her talk was really standing out. Seems thinking about science communication is really worth the effort.

9:34 AM
@JosephWright well they will get normal "paragraph" text and no headings - that what word user get if they create their section by making them larger and bold ;-)

@samcarter_left_tex.se I didn't know astronomy was your day-job

@JosephWright mixture of astronomy and particle physics

@UlrikeFischer Well yes, but it's a shame when every basic LaTeX intro covers \section
@samcarter_left_tex.se Ah, right
@samcarter_left_tex.se Big instrument stuff?

@samcarter_left_tex.se I've posted "Dr. Becky to the rescue! How to spot Comet NEOWISE, plus the largest 3D map of the Universe | Night Sky News July 20" under three questions already. This reminds me that I need to improve this answer: astronomy.stackexchange.com/a/36901/7982

@JosephWright One of the instruments I work for has "Cubic Kilometre" in the name, so yes :)

9:38 AM
@samcarter_left_tex.se km3net.org?

@JosephWright yes but neither does the intro covers how to get say a normal sized section, nor does offer LaTeX easy tools to adjust the fonts here. You need a better class like memoir or the koma classes for this. The tutorial examples yesterday had a \Large in the code -- probably to make the pdf better readable, but this too could done with the koma classes better.

@JosephWright yipp

@UlrikeFischer It's a paper using REVTeX, so (as I say a lot to authors using achemso): 'do not worry about formatting, that's the job of the editorial office'
@UlrikeFischer I hope to see some of the video today
@UlrikeFischer As I understand it, arXiv is about manuscripts, not finalised papers, so really they don't even need to be two-column (I'd actually say they must not be, and should be double-spaced, but then I'm used to classical manuscript submission)

@JosephWright oh revtex ;-) Everytime I look at the code I hope I don't have to debug it.

@UlrikeFischer Well it's physics, so of course its REVTeX
@samcarter_left_tex.se Ah, cool: sounds fun (and expensive)

9:45 AM
@UlrikeFischer it started off so well, but then change of author and went downhill:-)

@DavidCarlisle and now we broke it ...

@DavidCarlisle ooh
@UlrikeFischer ooh

@UlrikeFischer ???

@DavidCarlisle ooh
@JosephWright ooh

@JosephWright try
\documentclass{revtex4-2}

\begin{document}

\end{document}
(with dev)

9:47 AM
@PauloCereda 8249

@DavidCarlisle ooh the counter

@JosephWright I wrote them already, so they are warned.

@samcarter_left_tex.se Done!

Q: Why are Delta Aquariids for the southern hemisphere while the Perseids are for the north?

uhohIn the video How to spot Comet NEOWISE, plus the largest 3D map of the Universe | Night Sky News July 20 after 05:28 Dr. Becky (Smethurst, Oxford astrophysicist) says: …and it just so happens that we’ll be passing through the debris trail of two of the comets whilst comet NEOWISE is going to be ...

@samcarter_left_tex.se yes I see what you mean!

@UlrikeFischer Ah, a \document redefinition

10:03 AM
@samcarter_left_tex.se ooh can I post about Red Dwarf? :)

@PauloCereda :)

@samcarter_left_tex.se oh wow

@JosephWright would you like some toast?

@PauloCereda OH MY

10:16 AM
@PauloCereda Be prepared for migration to movies.se :)

@samcarter_left_tex.se oh no
@samcarter_left_tex.se I like how the first episode ever of Red Dwarf is named "The end". :)
@JosephWright "L3 goes fishing"

@PauloCereda certainly better than starting with episode number IV :)

@samcarter_left_tex.se ooh

@samcarter_left_tex.se Ah, well, that could work well if one left it there

@JosephWright Not a fan of the recent ones?

10:22 AM
@samcarter_left_tex.se I'm not as down on them as some people, but I meant in the abstract, the original idea of simply starting at IV and leaving the earlier part 'for ever to the imagination' is probably stronger in artistic terms

@JosephWright The merchandise force was strong :) In general I found them entertaining enough to enjoy them, but they recycled a lot of the old ideas and jokes.

Has anyone ever told you that the configuration and juxtaposition of your features is extraordinarily apposite?

@samcarter_left_tex.se I had no idea!

- Hey mr. duck, just take care of this very expensive equipment.
- Yes sir, don't worry.

[ LOUD AND BREAKING SOUNDS ]

- What happened?
- Oopsie. /quacks in despair
@samcarter_left_tex.se ^^ :)
I am just wondering: should I appear in the Zoom meeting webcam thingy wearing a silly hat?
> Hours of debugging can save minutes of reading the documentation.
6
@DavidCarlisle ^^

@JosephWright William Robertson
FANTASTIC

@PauloCereda I know :)

@PauloCereda ? I suppose I should watch the video?

@DavidCarlisle The video currently has Will's name on screen. :)

Why do I suddenly get upvotes for ancient answers on astro.se ?

10:42 AM
@samcarter_left_tex.se It happens
@samcarter_left_tex.se Probably 'targetted upvoting'

@PauloCereda ah.

NOW WE HAVE TOM

@JosephWright yeah, I'm afraid that's probably true.

@DavidCarlisle from my time at Overleaf, I remember that the revtex4-2 issues were very hard to fix...

WAIT A MINUTE
That might be the Zoom name
So if I write "Wacky duck" instead of my name, it will appear like that!

10:46 AM
@JosephWright iirc (funny, I wasn't born yet), the film originally wasn't numbered IV, but only named Star Wars, episode IV and "A new Hope" was added to the title later.

I click the Zoom link thingy, log into the app, but it tells me to wait... is this correct?!

@JosephWright just hoping you don't encourage everyone to try learnlatex tomorrow and break the server:-) I have done some apt clean and made some more space just in case.

@DavidCarlisle ooh let's break everything

@PauloCereda I don't think the host is already there

@samcarter_left_tex.se ooh

10:48 AM
@PauloCereda be polite you can't enter until you are invited in.

@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz I know
@Skillmonlikestopanswers.xyz But the conceit was brought in pretty early
@DavidCarlisle Soon find out

@DavidCarlisle oh, but how do I know I am invited?

@PauloCereda you'll be able to enter:-)

@DavidCarlisle oh

10:50 AM
@samcarter_left_tex.se OH MY
@samcarter_left_tex.se The amusing thing is that I had queueing theory as an undergraduate. :)

@PauloCereda Are you sure you aren't British?

@samcarter_left_tex.se ooh toodle pip

3 hours later…
1:32 PM
Will posts link, I click and log in into the Zoom thingy to just realise the thingy will start in 3 hours...
I AM AN IDIOT

@PauloCereda A Red Dwarf quote? Really?
Oh, never mind. I see there is... context. Sort of.

@FaheemMitha :)

As long as we are clear that Red Dwarf doesn't actually have anything to do with astrophysics.

2 hours later…
3:38 PM
@PauloCereda try now:-)

@DavidCarlisle are you in?

@UlrikeFischer yes see title screen and Paulo (the other one) setting stuff up in his office (using zoom not youtube)

@DavidCarlisle I'm now in too. they are speaking now ...

yep
@PauloCereda is in now :-)

@DavidCarlisle how can you see this?

3:53 PM
his name appeared as he joined and he spoke:-)
@PauloCereda will have to give the keynote with 30sec notice:-)

4:15 PM
@DavidCarlisle oh no

Everyone listening to the keynote?

Yes!

who is typing in the background?

@UlrikeFischer not me: I'm muted

4:16 PM
Not me, I am muted too.

@JosephWright must be someone on speaker panel, audience is muted anyway

@DavidCarlisle Joseph is in the panel.
:)

@DavidCarlisle Ah, true

Duck presence maximised

@DavidCarlisle I deliberately joined using the standard link, not the panel one
Yay, Rosetta Stone

4:17 PM
Yay, a stone!
This chat is way funnier. :)
Iced tea, anyone? :)

@PauloCereda Tea good, ice-in-tea bad
@PauloCereda I have just bought some fresh tea leaves :)

@JosephWright not Lipton, it's Leão (Lion in Portuguese), suitable for a TUG meeting. :)
@JosephWright ooh we need an infuser. :)

@PauloCereda Whittard's
@PauloCereda Now that I have

@JosephWright :)

Wonder what Khaled thinks of the Arabic decisions
89 people on the Zoom - must be getting on for a TUG record - as there is YouTube too
I see that despite my cunning login approach, I'm still on the panel tab
Kris Holmes is listening :)

4:27 PM
@JosephWright I think you have to logout of Zoom to become an attendee.

@MarcelKrüger I'm not too worried, I just have to stay muted other than during my talk tomorrow

@MarcelKrüger I saw you! :)
@JosephWright Or you were assigned as such. :)

Yay, font shaping has come up

@PauloCereda Ooh

@MarcelKrüger ooh

4:33 PM
@JosephWright I have a very similar example in my talk...

@MarcelKrüger I can imagine
@MarcelKrüger I do like the fact he's mentioned getting experts on the various script types: I know Khaled has raised that recently w.r.t. Arabic

I will talk about video games. :)

@JosephWright And all the Indic scripts. I would love to speak with someone who writes Devanagari and can give me a bit more context about all these signs and shaping rules.

@MarcelKrüger Indeed, sure: I guess that's subtly different to designing the fonts in the first place

I don't have a bookshelf

4:44 PM
@DavidCarlisle Clever question!

@JosephWright which one?

> for Latin fonts people have a very wide choice of font families, given the amount of work taken to produce noto, will it be feasible for others do do something similar or will multi-lingual printing move to a noto only monoculture?

@JosephWright ah, that did go only to the vip

wooo David

@UlrikeFischer Paulo N. is reading them out

4:45 PM
@JosephWright Yep :)

@MarcelKrüger Maybe talk to the people at topanswers.xyz/tex-mar-deva ?

FRANK'S GARDEN

@PauloCereda :)

ooh @MarcelKrüger
oopsie that was me

Seen the [-1cm] in the title metadata of the accessibility talk's slides? Accessible metadata are hard :)
4

4:55 PM
@TeXnician :)

These Paulos are confusing :)

@PauloCereda Can we number them?

@PauloCereda Too many Pauloz
2

@JosephWright LOL

@PauloCereda Channelling en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Too_Many_Zooz
@TeXnician :)

4:59 PM
@JosephWright ooh

So currently around 120 people watching

it stopped? or just me

@DavidCarlisle Nope, it's stopped

@DavidCarlisle no I have no video either

@DavidCarlisle I feel for Paulo N.

5:09 PM
@JosephWright and poor Paulo C.?
Sound okay?
Naughty naughty

5:25 PM
@PauloCereda Challenging

@StefanKottwitz indeed

@PauloCereda Do you hear sound right now?

@StefanKottwitz Yes, I do

yo'
@JosephWright Where is @DavidCarlisle to suggest one of them renames to Dinner?

I am nervous
@yo' ooh Paulo N. obviously

5:35 PM
All the best, you can do it!

@jokerdino <3

@PauloCereda Good luck!

@MarcelKrüger Thanks! <3

@PauloCereda the Bär is watching ...

@UlrikeFischer ooh

5:40 PM
@UlrikeFischer We want him on video!

@MarcelKrüger no idea how to make a video, but I can ask my husband to make a foto ...
Why is there no count down??

I am online!
4

This talk is brilliant!

@samcarter_left_tex.se I hope he's on commission from Nintendo

side question, how can I tune in preferably without logging in?

5:53 PM
@jokerdino youtube is live streaming it (im on zoom which requires login)

much thanks

@DavidCarlisle I feel the overwhelming need to buy something from Nintendo :)

@samcarter_left_tex.se do they sell roasting ovens?

@DavidCarlisle oh no

5:58 PM
ooh

@UlrikeFischer The guest of honour !

@DavidCarlisle <3

@samcarter_left_tex.se ;-) But I since I used my headset for some time (because there was noise outside) I can't get rid of the message that my microphone doesn't work.

@UlrikeFischer I know this problem. For teaching I connect my digital pencil to a second computer, which does not have audio - it shows a similar message the whole time

6:06 PM
@DavidCarlisle <3

@DavidCarlisle you were mentioned

“longtable is awesome” :-)

it's so intuitive no one needs the doc
3

@DavidCarlisle but it is so good prose

@UlrikeFischer the longtable example in colortbl is better coloured

6:07 PM
@DavidCarlisle ooh

6:18 PM
is it emacs?

@DavidCarlisle oh

@PauloCereda excellent audio and voice!

@PauloCereda Thanks for your nice talk!
7

yo'
So nice @PauloCereda ! (I didn't know ducks know how to go live :-) )

@wtsnjp <3 Thank YOU very much, you helped me set the tone for the talk. :)
@yo' quack <3

6:29 PM
@PauloCereda really nice talk!

@PauloCereda Fantastic talk!!!

@michal.h21 <3
@samcarter_left_tex.se <3

6:46 PM
Why does the following not work?
\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}

\def\foo#1#2{%
\def\foobar{#2}%
\foobar
}

\foo{T}{V##1}

\end{document}
Why does this not produce VT?

6:59 PM
@MarcelKrüger -- The list of advisers at the end listed Fiona Ross. She has worked extensively in the design of Indian fonts, including Devanagari. I attended a talk she gave a few years ago on the subject, and it was both informative and very enjoyable. She now works with Tiro Typeworks, and can probably be reached through them.

@Gaussler it doesn't use #1 at all, so it's clear you wouldn't get T what happens to ##2 is trickier

@DavidCarlisle But \foo{T}{V#1} does not work either
How can I write something in the second argument to get the T?

@Gaussler you need to pass the argument to foobar (if I understand the question)

@DavidCarlisle Yes, I know that would work. I just don’t get why the other thing would not
I mean, #2 contains something that expands to #1

@Gaussler the replacement of #2 by the second argument isn't expansion.

7:10 PM
@DavidCarlisle \cs_set:Npo does not do the trick either, so expansion does not solve the problem

@Gaussler the #1 of \foo is replaced by T in the body of \foo's replacement text but never in its arguments so using a macro with an l3 name is no different to using one without, the T is not there.

@DavidCarlisle The important thing was the o in \cs_set:Npo. You said that replacing arguments by their values does not expand anything. I said that expanding the stuff did not do anything either

@Gaussler no I said it wasn't expansion.

@DavidCarlisle Yes, I get it. Thanks anyway :-)

@Gaussler it is a different mechanism at a different time, so edef, expandafter etc don't have any effect on it

7:27 PM
Guys, is the TUG schedule correct?

@PauloCereda Did you miss the TeX in church talk an hour ago?

@StefanKottwitz oh no
/quacks in despair

@StefanKottwitz you are looking at the old one, he's on later: tug.org/tug2020/program.html

@PauloCereda I hope so, I'm expecting your second talk in 2 hours.

@UlrikeFischer <3

7:36 PM
@DavidCarlisle made fun with Paulo

@StefanKottwitz don't confuse ducks they are confused enough already
@Gaussler this perhaps?
\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}

\def\foo#1#2{%
\edef\foobar##1##2{#2}%
\foobar{#1}{#2}%
}

\foo{T}{V#1}

\end{document}

@DavidCarlisle Waiting for Nintendo Animal Crossing: New Horizons in church
@DavidCarlisle confuse times confuse makes crystal clear

@StefanKottwitz good plan.

@StefanKottwitz :)
@StefanKottwitz @DavidCarlisle the best part was PN using "deserve" instead of "require" in his introduction about me. :)

@StefanKottwitz fingers crossed that Joseph doesn't persuade hundreds of people to all try latexcgi.xyz all at the same time tomorrow morning, might be an interesting experiment in server load:-)

7:44 PM
@DavidCarlisle You just did the planning

@DavidCarlisle I already mentioned LearnLaTeX. :)

@DavidCarlisle Is it live (so we all test latexcgi.xyz at the talk time ;-) ) or a recording?

@StefanKottwitz the talk is a recording but the audience could follow along in real time

@DavidCarlisle Yes, you may have a hundred testers, probably not in the same seconds

@UlrikeFischer one for you:

Q: Who cares about metadata?

tanGISI do add metadata to my LaTeX documents since more than a decade. hyperref and hyperxmp provide an interface to do so. Recently the possibilities have expanded with hyperxmp. You can add more and more stuff. In theory, this looks great. I started asking myself who actually uses this metadata. Tag...

@StefanKottwitz if it crashes I'll blame @UlrikeFischer.

7:51 PM
@DavidCarlisle I saw it, but I'm just fighting with a plot that don't want to show the values of last week ...

here we go again....

8:24 PM
hello, how are you ?
please how to do something like this

@lindaOiladali cancel package

how to make 0 ?

@lindaOiladali possibly just ^{0} (we are all watching the tug conference live stream at present, bad time to ask questions:-)
4

8:44 PM
@DavidCarlisle <3

8:58 PM
@PauloCereda thanks for the talk! What you were saying was perfectly understood (for non-English speakers)
Is your next video-talk on the hands of the moderator? Be ready!

@manooooh Gracias. :)
@manooooh Mine? I am ready, I guess. :)

Niceee

9:44 PM
spam alert

Try to follow a bit, but I have no bandwidth here in the semi wilderness in Northern Spain... So I'll watch it later, I hope the link will be made available. Have a nice TUG everybody!

yo'
10:16 PM
@Rmano there'ss surely be the youtube links

10:37 PM
Sometimes nothing seems to work. #macwoes

10:52 PM
@AlanMunn ouch, what happened? :(

yo'
11:04 PM
@AlanMunn :(

@PauloCereda well my Mac mini was massively corrupted in ways I’ve never seen before. Then it took forever to get a version of High Sierra to download because Apple doesn’t like Firefox and I didn’t think to use Safari.
And in an unrelated but worse problem Time Machine has forgotten all my backups and wants to start over even though they are all there on the drive.

11:40 PM
I am using this solution tex.stackexchange.com/a/44835/63097, but the braces are not at the same height
is there a way to have them at the same height?
well, I guess it's fine like this
but is there a way to have them at the same height?

yo'
Too tired, I'll have to finish Ross's talk another day. Have a good night all and see you in the morning!

11:58 PM
@nbro put a zero width rule of a specified depth n each

you mean something like [depth]?
