Every time I (mistakenly) press Alt+Shift+number one of my applications disappears from view. Does anyone know how to bring them back? It kind of feels like they move to a different desktop, but I don't know how to look at those desktops.

Windows 10?

Yes.
I think I can see them in Task Manager listed as background processes.
It happens every once in a while that I mis-type, and I usually end up rebooting my PC to get back to normal. But I'm sure there's a better way. This time, I'll have lost quite a lot of work if I reboot.

I think you've got an add-on running to do that; I can't find anything about that key combo when I bingleduck.

11:54 AM
Uh. Not that I know of.

Are you certain it's ALT SHIFT # and not WINKEY SHIFT #?

Yes, Win+Shift+# clones window number 3

Sorry; my bad. I don't mean "#" literally; I mean WINKEY SHIFT and any number. But the docs don't provide a consistent-with-your-description function for that, either.

@JeffZeitlin I know you mean a number. That's what I mean too.
Also, it appears to only happen for 2,3,4. I presume because there are 4 "virtual desktops" (except I don't actually have that), and I'm currently on number 1.

Actually, Win10 does have a virtual desktop system built in; I don't use it, and I can't find how the keyboard interacts with it.

12:07 PM
@JeffZeitlin Yeah, I know. But this is crazy. I can repro it no problem. And my apps are surly still running.
Clearly, it isn't Windows' virtual desktops. Even if I create 5, Alt+Shift+5 doesn't do anything.

Yeah, and again, the available info isn't consistent with what you're describing.
The only think I can think of is a third-party VD manager, but you say not.

@JeffZeitlin That made me look through TaskManager's list of applications, and lo, I think I've found a 3rd part VD manager!

:)
Which one?

Dexpot. My problem was that I only have it running for something entirely unrelated, so I never thought of it as a VD manager.

I'll have to check that out; first I'm hearing of it...

I only used to to pin windows on top.

I know I've seen other software for that...
Looks interesting, some nice features listed. But it's purely commercial, not worth it to me.
/me is a cheap-a$$

Because x86 needs to go die in a fire: cnet.com/news/…
All x86 hardware will be obsolete.
I've said this time and again: x86 is inherently inefficient. The x86-64 instruction set space is an absolute mess and a nightmare to comprehend. Parsing x86 code requires more silicon and more power than decoding Arm instructions. Semiconductor manufacturing improvements can only do so much. When we reach the end of Moore's Law, when every major manufacturer uses fundamentally the same process, nobody will want to use x86.

Decoding Arm instructions is always going to be cheaper (in terms of power) than decoding x86 instructions. Even if the rest of the core, including the execution engine and backend, are of similar complexity, an Arm frontend will always be more efficient than an x86 frontend.

Well, i knew at some point that Apple would want to ditch intel CPU's for their own silicon
But I don't think the world is ready to move onto ARM
Windows for ARM is meh

@CaldeiraG Apple has experience in changing/moving architectures, and basically control/want to control their own stack

1:42 PM
@JourneymanGeek they make the hardware, the OS, i would expect it be easy to switch architectures at any time
considering now macOS becomes closer to ipadOS (forgot its name :p)
it's a ecosystem you're paying for basically

2:12 PM
yup

It's a clever trick
Can't have a antitrust suit, if it only runs on your hardware.

3:58 PM
@CaldeiraG Yes, it's called iPadOS.

@bwDraco ah good :)
just not familiar with apple tech

@djsmiley2kStaysInside Oooh good point
Hackintoshes are about to get a bit more complicated
and probably even more offtopic on SU

10:05 PM
they are pushing towards serviceless machines
the laptops will be totally sealed with no ports of any kind
it get inside you'll need a dremel
you spend £3k on a new one, when it breaks you'll have to bin it and buy another

@Burgi it sorts of happens now anyways
That rumor of a portless iPhone could very well be true
They don't care about your wired earphones, buy airpods instead

i can even envisage a nightmare world where they rent you the hardware

You want wireless fast charging? Buy our $60 fast wireless charger because the one in the box is 5w lol

OMG! CONSPIRACY THEORY!

@Burgi :/
@Burgi xD

apple invented corona virus so that people wouldn't go round to their friends house and while there borrow a charging cable

11:23 PM
Lol :p

THATS WHY THERE WAS ALL THAT CRAP ABOUT 5G!!!!!!

I wanna see a MacBook that doesn't thermal throttle xD

W A K E U P S H E E P L E ! ! ! !
