Congrats to our enthusiastic users drones.stackexchange.com/help/badges/54/enthusiast

@Daniil for beta sites, we don’t make one. There’s nothing special about it, though. Just create a room, name it, add a link to it.
@Daniil Depends on the site. The room will automatically choose one. If you want others, figure it out as a site. :)
You don’t need a mod if the person the room chose is around and can name someone else.
... but apparently no one has been added yet.

user435118
@Catija I thought it was supposed to choose one, just asked because no one has been added...

12:29 AM
There’s a wait... not sure how long.

12:40 AM
@Daniil Thanks!

1:05 AM
@Daniil Yea! Hoping to get one of my own soon... I'm eligible. :)

1:24 AM
Looks like maybe 30 days from creation.

6 hours later…
7:28 AM
@ifconfig I did include my thinking about that edit (-: drones.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/482 "When I think 'rubber band plane' I think of an aircraft using the bands for thrust ... but if enough other users agree to the edit, then fair enough."

Yeah, I heard.

No worries, just thought I'd check so you know it wasn't personal!

👍
@Kralc FYI, these are what I was talking about: rcsuperstore.com/hobbico-64-rubber-bands-1-4-lb-approx-100
I can't seem to find a picture of an airplane that uses them :( , but there's one in my garage. :)

Yes, I've seen a couple of planes that use them to hold on the wings; I wasn't sure how common that. Although only yesterday I came across an aircraft that uses rubber bands to hold the propeller on!

Lol, yea. All kinds of uses, structural and elastic-powered craft.
The sky's the limit, hehe

user435118
8:36 AM
@ifconfig Yay, you got the badge. Well done!

user435118
@Catija 30 days is today, so we will wait and see...

user435118
But how did Materials.SE get a room owner before us: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/info/107323/materials-modeling ?

8:52 AM
@Daniil Manually added by someone: chat.stackexchange.com/messages/54335944/history
An automatic appointment will look like this:
in The Awkward Silence, Oct 29 '17 at 23:36, by Feeds
Tinkeringbell has been automatically appointed as owner of this room. (What does this mean?)

user435118
9:09 AM
@Tinkeringbell That was 123 days after the room started though...

@Daniil Oh, yes... I just picked mine because I knew it was there. TAS had another room owner before that, but they were inactive.
> Automatic appointment of room owners
If a reasonably active room has no owner, or none of the owners have been in the room for a certain time, a new owner may be automatically appointed, to ensure that there's somebody who can administrate.

user435118
What was the first RO, how many days after the room started?

It seems the first automatic appointment was 16 days after the room started.
I found it!
> Update: This is now automated; if none of the owners of a reasonably active room has shown up for a while, the most active user (whose activity must also be above a certain threshold) will be automatically made owner. This logic would also have made ircmaxell owner of the PHP room, hadn't I done it manually.

The exact values are currently: "a while" means 30 days, "reasonably active" means at least 50 messages per day (averaged over 30 days), and "certain threshold" means 10 messages per day (same averaging). But we might still tweak those numbers.
y'all are too quiet. Talk more!

user435118
9:26 AM
@Tinkeringbell Let's have a chat then :)

user435118
@ifconfig You too! ^

@Daniil I'm supposed to be working :P Things are almost done compiling, so... it's going to be sloooow chat? ;)
Whoever is going to be appointed eventually might be able to answer V2Blasts question in the comments there ;)

user435118
Maybe these limits should be reduced, say average 30 messages a day?

user435118
@NikeDattani Do you still want me to ping Catija to come into the Materials.SE chat room?

user435118
@Tinkeringbell What do you think about reducing the limits? Should I suggest on meta.SE?

9:31 AM
@Daniil I'm not sure. For a room with less than 50 messages a day, a room owner might not be very needed. 50 is very little!
With this message, today's total is already 44 ;)

user435118
Really, doesn't look like 45

We can count :P 46
47: From now on, everyone shall number their chat-messages :P

user435118
How do you do a strikethrough in markdown? - 48

user435118
Also what do you work as?

50: three times a '-' in front and behind your sentence/word likethis

user435118
9:36 AM
Thanks (50 51)

user435118
Um... ^

---likethis---

user435118
Oh sorry, didn't see the three

Now you have 4 after ;)
Yay!
I also lost count :P
I work as a software developer for a big grid operator.

user435118
🎉

user435118
9:38 AM
Ah cool, what language do you use?

user435118
Never heard of it

user435118
Is it popular?

user435118
I mainly use Python

Depends on who you ask, I guess. It's a very specific language for some very specific tasks. Even gis.se has only 9 questions about it, there isn't much of a community online. I started programming in Java for a year or two. After that I was asked to move to GEO/GIS and learn Magik, given my background in archaeology they thought I might have the necessary grasp on some basics to quickly learn this one... and GE is working on getting rid of Magik and replacing it by Java.

user435118
9:43 AM
I just released we have 1500 messages, and 30 days= 50 messages a day

user435118
But the transcript is showing the room only exists for 29 days: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/106718

user435118
Maybe it will be 30 in the evening, around the time the room was actually created

user435118
We need 35 more messages for 1.5k...

So, that means you've crossed the 1500/30 is bigger than 50 mark.
Given how programmers work, I would say the code probably just divides by 30 and doesn't look at dates (that would explain the 16 days for TAS' first RO, for example).

user435118
People eligible for RO: No-one

9:46 AM
Now you only need one person that has written on average 10 messages a day, so at least 300 in total ;)

user435118
No-one averages 10 a day

user435118
Spam

user435118
Just joking :)

user435118
I need 4 more messages

You seem to have written 297 all time messages in this room... so I guess with a bit more chatter, you might wake up a room owner tomorrow ;)

user435118
9:47 AM
Do you use Python?

user435118
Go to sleep a room owner :)

@Daniil Hmmm. You might have to stay up quite a long time, I think...

user435118
Does the 10 a day threshold need to be upheld after a RO is appointed?

user435118
@Tinkeringbell Why? The room was created around 5pm my time...

Nope. There's no automatically disappointing Room Owners, but if you become too inactive another one may be automatically appointed too.
@Daniil I'm not sure at what time the script runs ;)

user435118
9:49 AM
I stay up till around 12/1 so we will see

1 might do it ;)

user435118
Do you think I should raise the issue on Meta as to whether everyone thinks I am ok as a RO or whether I should appoint someone else?

user435118
Ok, I'll just leave it then :)

user435118
> Do you use Python?

9:50 AM
First a.) wait until you're actually appointed, no selling hides before shooting the bear and b.) if people really think you're not, they can make their own meta post :P
No, I've never used Python :)

user435118
Do you think I'm ok?

user435118
I should probably wait till I am though, good idea :)

user435118
I have the tendency to get too excited about something which may not happen and it never does happen

Sure, why not? There's always a learning curve but I think you could take it... and if it makes you feel better to have some backup from the beginning, you can always ask for that.
But indeed, wait first. See how it goes if it does happen... Unless you really don't want to, then you should stop talking now and perhaps if I move some messages to Trash, the script will be confused :P

user435118
lol It's fine, I'll see how it goes

user435118
9:53 AM
You can move messages because you are a mod, right?

user435118
Can I just say you average a high number of votes per post on IPS

Yep. Room Owners can do that too, to an extent. The only special thing moderators have is that we can move messages to moderator only chatrooms, so that no one that's not a moderator can ever read them again.
meta.stackexchange.com/q/271267/369802 is a good overview of what users, room owners and moderators can do in chat moderation.
@Daniil You can. Results are pretty skewed though, given that most of my answers were written when we still had 5 posts a day on HNQ.
If a question doesn't reach HNQ, 3-5 votes are often the average.

user435118
10:07 AM
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, that's mostly the case for me as well on other sites

user435118
12:47 PM
@Tinkeringbell When you tag something on MSE as status-review, do you review it yourself or tag it at the request of CM's?

Don't quote me on this but I think mods can put if they need an input from a CM and not really at the request of them
I think there is a topic on Meta

Q: Our Commitment to Responding to Meta and Moderators

JNatAs Teresa mentioned in our Q1 roadmap blog post, the company is working on establishing our commitment to responding on our Meta sites and to our moderators, by setting up a new Meta engagement policy. The goal is to increase staff participation on the various Meta sites, particularly Meta Stack ...

there ya go

@Daniil This one was tagged because I don't know the answer and another mod doesn't either...so we feel it's one of those that can only be answered by an employee.

user435118
@Tinkeringbell Ok, makes sense

user435118
1:23 PM
@Tinkeringbell Can you give me a link to the post on MSE announcing you as mod please?

user435118
Having toruble finding it...

@Daniil This one?

Q: Please Join Us in Welcoming Our New Meta Stack Exchange Moderators!

Tim PostWe're really excited to announce the appointment of three new community moderators to Meta Stack Exchange! I know this might come as a really big surprise to some, and I can't wait to talk about it, but let's not delay the introductions any more. Please welcome ChrisF, Tinkeringbell and Journeyma...

or the council one

user435118
@CaldeiraG Thanks

user435118
Yes, that one

@Daniil yw :D

user435118
1:25 PM
I was using all sort of search params and couldn't find it

i just searched tinkeringbell and ordered by number of votes ;)

user435118
Much simpler than my search:

user435118
body:moderator OR body:nominated OR body:nomination is:q closed:no score:100..500

user435118
That should have still worked... not sure why it didn't

Q: Why does this search not return expected results?

DaniilI was searching for this post: Please Join Us in Welcoming Our New Meta Stack Exchange Moderators! I searched the following: body:moderator OR body:nominated OR body:nomination is:q closed:no score:100..500 i.e.: The post either contains 'moderator', 'nominated' or 'nomination' It is a q...

1:35 PM
@Daniil no clue
it's like reddit search
you get better results searching on google and adding the reddit keyword than using their search engine xD

user435118
@CaldeiraG Agreed xD

@Daniil I'm not sure SE search takes OR for the body operator? The only reference I can find in the advanced search faq references tags.

user435118
@Tinkeringbell I am using Samuel's userscript for search

Hmm. It seems to use (and) instead of (or).
The moderator appointment post doesn't contain the words nominated or nomination.
meta.stackexchange.com/q/160100/369802 < seems to confirm the search is 'and', so now I have to figure out if the 'or' is only for tags ;)

user435118
1:56 PM
By OR I mean if it contains either moderator or nominated etc.

user435118
Not all of them

Yeah, but the search engine uses 'and' by default, and overriding it with 'or' for body searches is not possible at this time.
OR is only for tag searches.

user435118
Ok, thanks

No problem, you're welcome :)

user435118
@Tinkeringbell Sorry for not accepting your answer. Glorfindel's answer just gave a bit more detail

user435118
2:08 PM
No offence

None taken. :)

user435118
I did give it +1 though :)

More detail?! I dug up a comment from '13 for my answer :P
I saw. It's okay, really.

user435118
Can mods see users votes?

Q: Clicking on an admin link for a site where I'm not a mod displays the mod agreement page instead of a 404

DavidPostillWhen I click on a link to an admin page on a site where I'm not a moderator I see a Moderator Agreement page instead of a 404 page. Example (using my own UserID): Clicking on https://stackoverflow.com/admin/show-user-votes/3536342 displays: The URL gets redirected to: https://stackoverf...

But I saw both answers being upvoted + one being accepted at practically the same time ;)
Logical conclusion ;)

A: Could moderators see votes in the past?

user102937Diamond moderators can see the same information about votes as you can. In addition, diamond mods can see voting in the aggregate, between users. This is necessary to identify voter fraud. This ability to see voting patterns has been in place for as long as I have been a mod, although the tool...

user435118
Oh ok, so basically just like user x voted for user y 10 times and z 5 times?

Really all I can say is probably in that post: talking about the details too much will make the tools we have too easy to evade.
Run for a moderatorship on this site once the election opens, and you might be able to check for yourself ;)

user435118
2:17 PM
@Tinkeringbell I will, my nomination post is nearly ready ;)

Good luck then!

user435118
Thanks

user435118
4:31 PM
@ifconfig Have you heard anything about Joshua yet regarding featuring the site on YouTube?

user435118
Maybe he could even participate on the site...

user435118
I think it’s time to start thinking about ways we can promote the site

user435118
We are getting some activity at least

user435118
3.85 questions a day in the last week

user435118
We need more traffic from search engines

user435118
4:35 PM
We are getting quite a bit of user account creations though: drones.stackexchange.com/…

@Daniil No, haven't heard back yet. :(
Are those all new users?
Huh

user435118
5:07 PM
Yes, they are newly created accounts

5:56 PM
173

6:10 PM
nice!
IDK where from, but it's great to see!

Oh. I was saying 173 messages today.
But it's definitely great how many new people there are!

6:43 PM
OH!
Wow

1 hour later…
user435118
7:59 PM
@JacobB You mean 173 chat messages?

user435118
Does anyone here play pool (either real or digital)? If so I am planning a new SE site for pool. Please ping me if you have interest in setting up the proposal

Huh.
IDK if there's a sufficient community online though...

user435118
There is, 8 ball pool is a massive app

user435118
I contacted them asking them to get some publicity or even sponsorship

user435118
No. 3 on the AppStore for sports

8:04 PM
@Daniil Sports SE already covers these cue sports, although I remember there have been attempts to proposing a new SE site for those
(or more specifically I remember reading a meta post on that)

user435118
I think there needs to be a specific community

user435118
Loads of topics: Cues, the online game, breaks, spin, rules, 9 ball pool, tournaments, tactics etc.

user435118
I’m a big player of the online game

You could post on Sports Meta about this proposal and see what users think

user435118
Will do

8:07 PM
because I can't find the meta post anymore

DaniilI was thinking of proposing a SE site about pool (the game). I saw we already have a pool here, which isn’t the most popular. I am thinking of making an election chat room where we can discuss the election (when it starts) and ask candidates questions, what does everyone think?

@Daniil yes.
I did mean chat messages
@Daniil I think that's a good idea.
Anyone else think so?

@JacobB Great questions by the way

user435118

@Daniil Thanks!
I try to make questions that will be useful to lots of people.
You also have many great questions.
:)

user435118
Thanks :)

user435118
@JacobB Will you be running for mod?

I'm not sure yet

user435118
You still have time to decide :)

Yeah

user435118
10:56 PM
Waits to be appointed as room owner

:)

For context

user435118
@JacobB Do you have many photo entries if we were to run the photo competition?

@Daniil Yeah, I saw that earlier.
@Daniil Not really.
I don't take a lot of photos of things

user435118
11:00 PM
What do you fly for mainly, for fun?

I have a 5 inch drone which I fly most often.
I also have a small drone for when I don't have lots of room.

user435118
Did you join SE only because of the Drones.SE site?

Yeah
I hadn't heard much about it before.
And I wasn't as interested in the other topics.
When did you get into SE?
