4:00 PM
Ah, now I get why this reminded me of the typical setup of a physicist explaining Stokes' theorem!

user434058
Anyways, since a few mods are here, I was serially upvoted yesterday, and the votes haven't been reversed yet. The last time this happened to me, the votes got reversed in a day. So would you guys look into it, or is it okay for me to have the rep ;P ?

@FakeMod Once again, that'd be a case for a flag.

I'm well-versed in these steps cause this is how we go from the differential form of the Navier-Stokes equations that we solve with finite difference methods to the volume-integrated form that we solve with the finite volume method

user434058
@ACuriousMind Why would I flag my serial upvotes?

I just lectured on it... uhhhh... last week I guess

user434058
4:02 PM
:D

@tpg2114 By solve you mean "get frustrated with until I give up", right?
That was always my approach to trying to solve NS equations!

@JMac I always tell people interested in computational fluids -- try to write your own solver, get it to work for some canonical problems, and then throw it out and use somebody else's code and never look back
Cause it's painful to write a good solver, on many many levels

@tpg2114 In my experience it was painful to try to solve like the "simple" scenarios. Thank goodness for long existing modelling software. It's nice to try for yourself to have some idea what is going on... but my goodness I couldn't imagine trying to actually be productive that way.

It's good to see how the sausage is made. But unless you happen to really like the intersection of physics, engineering, programming, HPC, numerical methods, software engineering, and other applied math area, it is really not worth trying to write a full code
I don't recommend it. It is pretty rewarding though, especially when you can add entirely new capabilities in very short times
Yesterday I was adding an immersed boundary forcing method to do arbitrary geometries on cartesian meshes -- took like 2 hours and it worked right away. But today, I'm trying to write a CAD file reader so I can build a KD-tree of the surface and create signed distance functions
Much less fun.

@MadameAkira Yap, I know Ramayana

4:13 PM
@abhas_RewCie but did you know that part ? and that comment to ?

Recently, a TV Show on that, crossed a world record having 200 million unique viewership...
@MadameAkira No, I mean I know what that book is, but I've never read it.
I know very less on the content of the book...

it's okay
I think everyone has a rough idea of Ramayana

Depends... Some don't even know what's it
@MadameAkira Where you live? country/region?

and the viewership was 77M I think
many are claiming that
it would have made world reccord
but there was a 1983 show of name M.A.S.H. garnering 183M views so
Ramayan settled for second

@MadameAkira 77M was the viewership calculated only for TV users.

4:18 PM
English adaptation is too poetic for this generation to bear(I guess)

Never read...

Seinfeld finale had 78M or 79M also
I take that back, 76M

I used to watch it every sunday in my childhood. Some hindi words are tough to understand.

200M is next level (when they include Live streams too)
lol. I never understood the level of hindi they used.

@tpg2114 I wanted to watch seinfeld but people say if you have watched f.r.i.e.n.d.s already seinfeld feels boring

4:20 PM
I strongly dislike Friends... Seinfeld is one of my favorites though

I feel so ignorant... S Finale had 70+M viewership and I don't even know what it... also MA.S.H.

They are very different styles, however. Friends has overarching stories that go on for many episodes/seasons. Seinfeld has some of them, but mostly you can watch them in any order and they all stand alone

friends was my first exposure to western

Cheers! had 84M viewers for its finale

What is even that ? :P

4:21 PM
Cheeers and Fargo too were in the list

Cheers? It's a show that takes place pretty much entirely inside a local, neighborhood bar in Boston
Led to a few spinoff shows. I think the only one that was successful really was Fraiser

@MadameAkira I've never heard that before. Seinfeld and Friends are pretty different. Seinfeld is "a show about nothing". Basically just narcissists thrown into random situations and reacting to them (often with good running jokes through the episode). Friends seemed a lot more of the 'traditional" sitcom.

Also, that Cheers, I don't even know it. I think that TV in my home is most useless thing ever...
I rarely watch it.
Didn't even watch a single episode of ramayana
nor Mahabharata...

One thing to be made clear is that when I say 77M viewership on TV.I AM TALKING ABOUT A SERIES PREMIERED BACK IN 1987 AND RETELECASTED TODAY in the time of NETflix

XD
exactly
ramayana is early 90(s) still a hit today

4:23 PM
M*A*S*H is a good show too. It's a bit dated and a bit preachy at times. The earlier episodes were awesome, more comedy. Later in the series it got darker, more about the horrors of war, but still had comedy baked into it

@MadameAkira That's still not overly clear. Are you saying it had 77M viewers when it was recasted, originally played, or combined from both?

@JMac Well Ramayan Mahabharata and Bhagwat Gita are the foundations of Hinduism values.

I didn't like the finale much though. Much too dark for what the show was, but I suppose that's what happens in war.

@JMac when played in 2020
@tpg2114 What the show was about?

@MadameAkira ... I don't see what that has to do with the difference between Friends and Seinfeld.

4:25 PM
MASH? it was about life in an Army mobile hospital in the Korean war

show premiered in 1987.
retelecasted in 2020
77M TV viewership.
200M overall(according to Abhas)

@tpg2114 Lemme see that... sounds very interesting...

"Life" is kind of loosely used of course. It's mostly a comedy, especially early on
But, it's pretty funny. I still watch it occasionally

I was coming to friends and seinfeld.
Friends to me felt a bit cheesy at times but yeah Chandler always steals the show is basics theme for me

How long did MASH air?

4:26 PM
@tpg2114 sounds interesting

@tpg2114 I'm getting some rough vibes of it, sounds my kind of show... :-)

Various episodes and storylines usually show up on the "most controversial episodes" lists

@tpg2114 I'm getting some rough vibes of it, sounds my kind of show... :-)

@JMac It held the record for longest sitcom for awhile, lemme see

should I watch seinfeld then ?
I was recommended HIMYM too couldn't bear it

4:27 PM
MASH was 11 years
'72 to '83
I couldn't stand HIMYM either
I also couldn't stand The Office -- parts were funny, but it was just too uncomfortable to watch 99% of the time

Ramayana is very complicated, very highly philosophical, kids won't understand neither head nor tail by it.

I liked the British version well enough though, but it only ran for like 3 series or something

@tpg2114 was about to say the same

@MadameAkira Seinfeld is a lot less "happy" than Friends or HIMYM IMO. The jokes more centre on characters being mean to each other or other people. Still a comedy, and it's not like "depressing", just not as uplifting.

^ Quite true
But in funny ways. And it makes you somehow still like them, they are classic anti-heroes

4:29 PM
confusing... is that too a 90(s) show?

@abhas_rewcie they say the three epics tell us three different things
Bhagwat Gita :- how to live life
Ramayana :- what to do
Mahabharata :- what not to do

@abhas_RewCie Seinfeld is like a staples of 90's TV comedy in north america

@tpg2114 I can't bear steve carell

Which? How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM)? That's a 2000's show
When Seinfeld ended, it was the most popular show on TV

I tried BBT too.

4:30 PM
Big Bang Theory took me some time to watch. When I was at school, people everywhere around me were like those guys and it wasn't really funny to me... it annoyed me at school, so why would I want to watch the same thing on TV

but lost interest soon.
if I could give the "most misleading title" award BBT would be the winner.

@tpg2114 ah yes... finally som show, I actually know
big bang theory...

@tpg2114 I personally really like The Office. There are some episode I skip because they can be way too cringeworthy; but overall I definitely like it. That said, the UK version has a better plot IMO.

coolio

Now I can watch it though, the earlier seasons are funny. It's also less about nerds and more about cramming science jokes into a traditional "let's chase after girls" sitcom

4:31 PM
Brooklyn Nine Nine is funny

BBT is the type of show I'll watch if it's on and I'm distracted, but I don't seek it out or actively pay attention.

@JMac Did you get into Parks and Recreation? I never really watched it cause it seemed just a bit too blatantly derivative. But I know a lot of people who like it way more than the Office
@JMac That's how I use Seinfeld now also -- I've seen them all so many times, I can just put it on in the background and fade attention in and out as I want to

Parks and Rec I tried it.
there are jokes but plot is very streched
I mean it's good but not as good as it is hyped to be.

If you want really narcissistic people taken to the extreme, like what would happen to Seinfeld if they were rich and well-off people, then It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is the way to go

Bojack Horseman fan ?
that's height of narcissism

4:35 PM
Bojack is good.
But, through Bojack, there's a story of trying to get better and failing. Moments where he recognizes he's a horrible, destructive person and he tries to improve but then falls back
It's Always Sunny, there's no redemption or attempts at it. They are just horrible, trashy people
And it's positively hilarious

yes Bojack sometimes leads us on guilt trip.

Has anyone seen Parasite Movie? How's it?

@abhas_RewCie totally worth watching

@tpg2114 Parks and Rec is a weird one. Season 1 was basically just "It's The Office with a woman as Michael Scott and they're in the government". Season 2 onwards gave it a life of it's own, and it turned into a great series IMO. Probably some of the most memorable sitcom characters.

Okay....

4:37 PM
@JMac Yeah, I never really got deeper than season 1

parasite and parasyte(anime) too

Is there any way I can keep my account inactive... Like, "I should not use it for a few months".

@Krishna getting addicted to SE ?

@MadameAkira Certainly everyone is saying that 200M thing... I'm curious for DD's official reports to see what they say there.

Any way other than self-control?

Apps for what?

@Krishna be more productive.

@MadameAkira yes... Sort of

@tpg2114 IASIP is just gold. They cover so much stuff and do it so well.

@abhas_RewCie I still don't get you

4:40 PM
@Krishna There are apps to restrict certain other apps on time/schedule basis.

@tpg2114 I loathe TBBT. It takes the worst kind of nerds, puts them into the spotlight and thinks it's so hilarious that they're nerds, never acknowledging they're also just terrible people.

And sorry, I think I've interrupted a conversation
Oh thanks

this topic isn't worth debating for Ramayan or M.a.S.H .
77M for retelecast after 30 years that's already an achievement.

@ACuriousMind Yeah, they have no real depth beyond horny stereotypes

There was a period where every time I said I studied theoretical physics, I'd get the immediate response 'Oh, like Sheldon?'

4:41 PM
That's what I'm exactly saying, Millions of Viewership to what? A very old, ancient early 90(s) show.

@abhas_RewCie Careful what you're calling ancient...

I've never wanted to punch anyone more than the people who installed Sheldon as the face of theoretical physicists in the public mind
6

@tpg2114 okay.,. but, it's still old.

Chuck Lorre... hah

@abhas_RewCie exactly

4:42 PM
@tpg2114 Yes, I also know that one too.
XD
k... Good Night... I've to stay wake whole night XD
Bye

The problem though is that on campus, there were like 1000 Sheldon's.
That was kinda how people behaved and it annoyed the crap out of me

the text to the show dates back 5th century BCE
so it is ancient
@abhas_RewCie goodnight

Some parts were written 20,000 BC....
Bye :)

@ACuriousMind A lady friend of mine once bought me the boxed set of TBBT on the grounds (so she claimed) that I reminded her of Sheldon. I have long wondered if this was a hint that she wanted to remain just a friend.
3

that part is controversial west does not accept it you will just dig up and argument
good night
download YourHour app.
you'll stop being unproductive on phone

4:45 PM
@ACuriousMind My God pal, calm down! I have never seen you talk so violently :P

he's right though Sheldon is a repulsive character
if he's stripped off his brilliance

"love to hate" types sell tickets

@ACuriousMind please don't tell me he's part of the reason you left theoretical physics :-)

@JohnRennie That's a textbook case of a backhanded compliment, I guess :P

4:53 PM
yeah, a classic textbook :-)

@skullpatrol I don't generally let my life decisions be dictated by imaginary people :P

coolio

@JohnRennie big oof sir

@tpg2114 Oh, my sympathies. I only knew a few but dealing with 1000s must be exhausting ;)

She also said I reminded her of Matt Smith (of Doctor Who fame). Again I have long wondered if there was a subtext and if so what it was :-)

4:56 PM
The subtext there is clear: You should wear a fez.

@ACuriousMind hnnnnggggg
(an expression of deep pain)

Ah, the sound of agreement

i mean, i'm sure i could think of other media that infuriates me more
but for sheer omnipresence, it's hard to beat that show

true dat

5:47 PM
I feel like every article on the stock market is basically "Here's some crazy looking graph with dozens of lines that clearly shows <use some complicated term>. Some analysts think this is a sign prices will continue to rise, while others think stocks are about to fall. KTHXBYE, click our ads!"
I'm in the wrong field. I can plot random variables against each other also and then make wild guesses about what it means
I only have to be right marginally better than 50% of the time. So flip some coins for awhile until random chance has me right 51% of the time, and retire as a financial genius

@ACuriousMind : Watching Hidden Figures does cure that misconception to some extent.

Just a question, How many of you love to see UFO at night?
@JohnRennie hint for just a friend funny!

6:04 PM
@Qmechanic Haven't watched that, but maybe I should
@tpg2114 I think quantitative finance has a "pop-sci" scene much like physics where the things being written only make questionable sense if you look at them carefully :P

yeah, Jim Simons really put the pop in quant finance
In other news, I read Amazon is making billions on this coV situation.

6:24 PM
Is this saying of mine true or false? "In pertubation theory we try to sum up as many feynman diagrams as we can, we leave the rest and hope that they didn't matter that much." What I am asking I guess is, is the neglection of diagrams always/often justified or does it just work?

@B.Brekke It's not a "hope". If you look carefully, the standard perturbative expansion in loop-order is an expansion in the coupling constants. For coupling constants <<1, it's clear that the lower-order terms are the relevant ones. Arguably it's even better to not try to compute every term, since the perturbation series is asymptotic and is not expected to converge to the correct value.

6:53 PM
@ACuriousMind Wow, this sounds strange to me and very interesting! I will have to read up on it. But that means, that even though the factorial growth of diagrams seems to make the sum diverge, by performing resummation I can still get a sensible result?

You get a sensible result for the first few (usually a few hundred in "nice" perturbative regimes) terms, but eventually it will diverge.

7:13 PM
Could anyone give a brief explanation for why the covariant derivative is used in place of the regular derivative instead of just the four-gradient? The four-gradient acting on a tensor creates another tensor (as in the construction of the electromagnetic tensor), but we still create a new derivative, the covariant derivative in GR?
I was thinking about this yesterday, I thought the whole point of using the covariant derivative was because the regular derivative creates non tensorial objects, but the four gradient seems to satisfy this requirement, no?

@Charlie The electromagnetic tensor $F_{\mu\nu} = \partial_\mu A_\nu - \partial_\nu A_\mu$ is not a four-gradient.

are the individual $\partial_\mu A_\nu$ terms non tensorial?

It's an exterior derivative. The exterior derivative creates proper tensors, but only antisymmetric ones
@Charlie yes
Only the anti-symmetric combination of them makes them behave like a proper tensor

ahhhh

How does one derive the spinor metric?

7:21 PM
thank you ACM, that clears that up

@ACuriousMind BAZINGA! :P

@AaronStevens It seems like a lot of people are making reviews these days? Any data on how many helpful vs unhelpful?

Lol

@MoreAnonymous You could look at accepted vs. rejected, but I don't see how you could get helpful vs. unhelpful without sorting that out by hand.

7:30 PM
@AaronStevens My best guess would be to take a random data set and do that by hand

@MoreAnonymous I am not going to spend my time doing that :P
@ACuriousMind I would say the majority of the time I meet someone new and tell them I study physics they say "OH! So you're like Sheldon!?"
Oh, I see you said that too haha

@AaronStevens You guys are lucky! I get Raj because I'm Indian ... I'd love to settle for Sheldon
Hey I did theoretical and mathematical physics for pete's sake

@tpg2114 Take that back right now ;P
