Hmm
What does getting to decide what you do next mean in gane context?

Nothing. It's a meta currency for the group at the table.

Ah ok
So if I win I can make us play Space Goblins, or Goblin Court :P

Yup!

I like these goblin games
Fir some reason
For
Spelling, who needs it right phone?

Ben
1:16 AM
I have thoughts, but I think I'd need to know more first

It's still the same core gameplay loop.

1:52 AM
@Ben Mostly it's an aggressive re-skin of the game's fluff, and I'm adding a few extra mechanics like a hand of cards that represent the meta narrative of the kids' interaction with each other outside the story they're playing, and I'm giving the landmark countdown clock some more crunch.
I'm also aggressively simplifying the bonus/penalty system, along with a re-skin to make it more gobliny.

Q: Does Arcane Abjuration affect a Tiefling or Aasimar?

CWallachThe Arcana cleric's Arcane Abjuration feature may affect a celestial, elemental, fey, or fiend. A Tiefling has infernal heritage and an Aasimar has celestial heritage. Is this sufficient for them to be affected by Arcane Abjuration?

2:43 AM
@GcL That example's a poor one, since in 4e, warforged used healing surges like anyone else.
Nobody seems to want to talk about that one.

Yeah, a lot of the stuff that people are saying 5e improved over 3.5... is stuff they rolled over from 4e without giving credit.

user15026
@trogdor Goblins forever!

3:31 AM
@Ash XD
my goblin children, it is time to rise up!

Random 5e-dnd question, if you've got advantage on your next attack, that'd apply to Grapple/Shove as well?

@Medix2 They both are and aren't attacks - it'd depend on the wording of the source of advantage, I think.

@Miniman Well they are attacks, just also ability checks. But yeah I'm wondering if there really is a horrible annoying difference between having advantage on your next attack and having advantage on your next attack roll :(

3:48 AM
(It's definitely not one of those situations where "the rule is simple: if you're making an attack roll, you're making an attack" is going to cause any confusion....)
=\

I just thought feature normally said "you have advantage on your next attack roll" but then I found one that doesn't... time to look for more features I guess
I'm just gonna chalk it up to a wording mistake then, since everything else I see says "attack roll"

Are you looking for a standard to hew to as you write your own stuff?

Nah I just found a feature that worded it incorrectly and was perplexed, think it was just an actual error. And only technically cheese-able for things like grapple/shove and whirlwind attack / volley

1 hour later…
5:10 AM
@Medix2 "All the attacks in a whirlwind/volley are one attack" has to be one of Crawford's all time most nonsensical ones.

5:41 AM
@Miniman It pains me so

Ben
6:29 AM
@BESW ahh ok that sounds good!

There's gonna be a few more moving parts, but I'm trying to simplify each set and keep them mostly independent so there's not more analysis complexity about how they interact.

@BESW You have all the best ideas
(and more importantly, you make things out of them and that's really cool!)

Nov 17 '13 at 8:52, by BESW
Flattery will get you... quite a bit, actually.
This whole "actually finishing game designs" thing is still quite new and magical to me, I hope it holds.

:> best of luck!

Cardboard Monsters is gonna be a challenge, it's a very new kind of design, structurally.

6:34 AM
I can relate to that. I'm hopefully pushing through a few very long overdue projects within the coming months.

As I'm working these last couple days, I keep realizing that the ideas I'm putting down are sound but I have to completely re-organize them.
In particular I'm struggling with the relationship between mechanics and fluff because in the past my designs have basically been down to just writing the narrative and that's the mechanics.

Q: Can a druid's Spirit Totem feature be used in Wild Shape?

SenmurvCan you use the Spirit Totem feature of Circle of the Shepherd (XGtE, p.23) while you are in your Wild Shape form (PHB, pp.66-67)? SPIRIT TOTEM Starting at 2nd level, you gain the ability to call forth nature spirits and use them to influence the world around you. As a bonus action, you ...

Q: Is this homebrew item, Necklace of Nine Lives, balanced?

Himitsu_no_YamiI originally got part of this idea from the chat from user GcL then fleshed it out a bit and created it as a magic item. I'm not sure if it's balanced though against other Legendary items as it could potentially be quite powerful. Necklace of Nine Lives Wondrous Item, legendary (requires attu...

@nitsua60 As the login/username itself? Since I assume the display name can be anything, even one identical to others' display names.
Also, you'll never guess my Steam ID :P
We should play something together!

Q: Do the prone or restrained conditions grant other creatures advantage on special melee attacks like grapples?

PraxitelesThe description of the prone condition says: A prone creature's only movement option is to crawl, unless it stands up and thereby ends the condition. The creature has disadvantage on attack rolls. An attack roll against the creature has advantage if the attacker is within 5 feet of the...

Prone/restrained conditions mention "attack roll" specifically
there may be other sources that aren't worded as precisely
@Miniman Yeah... that one's quite silly
Today's free D&D product (...well, yesterday's, at this point) is Saltmarsh Encounters on DMsGuild, by Ashley Warren, James Haeck, James Introcaso, M.T. Black, and Rich Lescouflair.
@KorvinStarmast Get that while it's free! ;)
(There's also another coloring book page, as usual.)

8:27 AM
@doppelgreener just saw you come drifting in which, given your time zone, seems very reasonable and, given my time zone, seems very not =|

8:51 AM
lol
go to bed

9:03 AM
@BESW that's adorable

It's a h*ckin' lotta work. [falls over]

9:29 AM
if it's still a chance one of the monsters is just crazily highly mutated, i'm just gonna assume that's whoever the biggest sibling is

9:43 AM
I'm gonna significantly reduce the chances that it gets out of hand, but yeah, it's still gonna be a possibility.

10:42 AM
@doppelgreener Each of the monster decks will have one or two cards that say "When you draw this card: shuffle this card back into the deck and draw two more." But that's gonna be one or two cards out of decks of... probably 20 cards each.

1 hour later…
11:47 AM
(but there's also gonna be more opportunities to go through cards during play, I'm planning)

There's slightly increased odds of player 4 mutating twice over player 1 mutating twice, but it's negligible

Q: Can the Glamour bard's Mantle of Inspiration feature target the bard themself?

Smart_TJThe College of Glamour bard's Mantle of Inspiration feature reads as follows (XGtE, p. 14; emphasis mine): As a bonus action, you can expend one use of your Bardic Inspiration to grant yourself a wondrous appearance. When you do so, choose a number of creatures you can see and that can see yo...

12:35 PM
@HotRPGQuestions I hope so, cause mine did last session :P

1:03 PM
@V2Blast got 'em and a few other free ones

1:26 PM
@doppelgreener I did =)

Good :D

I think it was the aftereffects of an interrupted Thursday night's sleep. (Anyone else get that? Something wakes you up one night, then for a few nights following you also have wakeups?)
I woke up 2am Thursday bolt-upright with a stabbing pain between two of my ribs, could barely breathe, and then it passed in about fifteen seconds. Felt absolutely fine afterwards. Figure it's just a charley horse of the intercostal muscles, which I've never experienced before. But I took a moment to write my doctor an email saying "this happened, I don't have a fever or cough or ache or sore throat. It's probably not CoViD, right? Passed a little too quickly?"
I chuckled.
She chuckled.
WebMD said I have lung cancer.
So... everything seems normal =)

@nitsua60 Nice riff on the mimic joke :)

@V2Blast Yeah I went through a bunch of things and found only one. Shadow Monk's Shadow Step

@nitsua60 I have identified the one dyed in the wool murder hobo in our old fart group. He's playing a monk and, as they crossed a river the other night and a polar bear was watching them (they are 1st level) the others stayed alert; when it was his turn to cross the river, he just took out his long bow and let fly at the polar bear. And of course he hit. (He's a wood elf)
He's a wizard in our other group, who's mantra is usually "patience my backside, I wanna kill something" but we find ways to work around it. In this case, he's on the other side of the river: the barbarian and the fighter got to taste the Polar bear's annoyance before "focus fire effect" ended the bear. I was not intending to have the bear attack ... but after the arrow and the sorcerer's fire bolt, the reaction was changed
They are about to arrive in town, and I need to be prepared for his "Uh, OK, at this point I am gonna kick your butt" approach. (He's done it in the other campaign and my life cleric had to clean up a few of his messes...) What I want to be able to do is turn the whole situation into something absurd in a humorous way... still cogitating.

1:54 PM
@Powerdork I never played 4e despite having some of the Eberron 4e books. If power surge was essentially a class feature and intrinsic to the character, then it fits the lore better than external healing spells working for both constructs and non-constructs.

@nitsua60 can't wake up if I don't go to sleep
but seriously though, why am I awake

GcL
@Powerdork More likely it's not on the minds of many. It's my understanding that 4e was not as widely played as 3.5 and 5e.

@V2Blast Which leads me to a thought ... is a werewolf in human form, not shape changed, immune to a mundane attack with a quarterstaff?
Or better yet, a were polar bear ... hmmmm

@KorvinStarmast I think so
> Its statistics, other than its AC, are the same in each form.
(technically it can only use certain actions in certain forms too)

@V2Blast yeah, this opens up a really neat opportunity
hehehe

2:05 PM
👀

@V2Blast my other question is "can they only shape shift during a full moon" or is it "on demand" and I think it is the latter

@KorvinStarmast that one depends on whether they've embraced the curse
> A lycanthrope can either resist its curse or embrace it. By resisting the curse, a lycanthrope retains its normal alignment and personality while in humanoid form. It lives its life as it always has, burying deep the bestial urges raging inside it. However, when the full moon rises, the curse becomes too strong to resist, transforming the individual into its beast form — or into a horrible hybrid form that combines animal and humanoid traits. When the moon wanes, the beast within can be controlled once again. Especially if the cursed creature is unaware of its condition, it might not reme

@V2Blast Iaah, that makes sense.
but since were bears are usually good, ... heheheh

lol, yeah

"Grrr... must... prevent.. forest fires"

2:07 PM
Her name will be Ursala (something that means speaksing or talking)
Ursaloquace? Almost too cute there ...
Ursala Kwais? Hmm.
@MikeQ "This isn't 'dances with wolves' this is "talks to bears" since she goes out once per month to have a rap session with bears north of the lake ... which is frozen in winter ...
The monk can whack away at her with his quarter staff and she just keeps knocking him prone on his butt with a shove ... this might be funny or it might be lame ... not sure.

@KorvinStarmast All of the town guard have scrolls of hold person as part of their kit?

@nitsua60 nope, the town isn't that high level. The only 'wizard' is a retired Eldritch knight (4) who has been working his butt off (has arcana skill) making low level potions and scrolls to make ends meet. neat idea for a higher level town or city.
And of course the city guard really could abuse those scrolls, so only the Sergeants or Lieutenants would have them. Plus, this guy is a monk, decent wis save
what I am trying to do is evoke a bit of laughter from the rest of the players so the unbeatable big boned lady is only part of it ... plus she's seen adventurers come and go ...

Then they call on the captain of the guard, who has some Billaro's Bands...?

I have a picture of her that I took as a screen shot from Diablo III.
@nitsua60 that's also a good idea for a higher level town/city
But I need to replace that sword with an axe and remove all armor ....
D3 stinks at letting me dress up characters in just cloaks and leather. :p

(There's a fun backstory--generations (editions!) back some adventurer came through town, sowed chaos, and tossed the bands at the one do-gooder who tried to stop them. This captain's granddad. Days later the village finally freed him, and ever since the Iron Bands of $Village have been the cornerstone to their more-efficient-than-usual sense of order. And they get handed down, captain to captain.)

2:33 PM
BESW has stopped a feed from being posted into this room

Might be worth it...
Remember: You Choose the Feeds for this room! Vote, propose, poke an RO if the meta list and the feed-list mismatch!
2

Note: the room feed will sometimes mismatch because inappropriate content invalidates even the most well-voted of candidates.
I think we really need to start a new feed post on meta, it's not the kind of thing that gets better with age given the Stack's voting mechanics.
But I'm going to bed. ttfn

@nitsua60 that also works, but we then end up with a jail break scenario or something, and I am not interested in running a jail break in town; I am trying to get them out of town toward the Sunless Citadel ... torching the town isn't a serial I want to set up.
of course, they might do that anyway ... these are my D&D friends we are talking about, and random has a certain attraction to them all ...

Really stupid trap: sealed scroll labelled scroll of antimatter.

4:44 PM
What's the trap part?

Maybe there is no trap part, and that's why it's a stupid trap?

Good morning, does anyone know how to inform an integration api for ASP with paid market
ASP Classic + Paypal or mercado pago

@MateusVeloso I think you're looking for one of Stack Overflow's chat rooms here: chat.stackoverflow.com
This is a room about tabletop games, and while some of us might be programmers it's probably not the place to seek help for that topic.

5:44 PM
@doppelgreener Unless "GURPS has a book for that, though you may need a spreadsheet to implement" helps with that, too!?

@nitsua60 This reminds me of a case when someone in the GURPS IRC asked about doing some basic MonoBehaviour stuff in Unity 3D. I used the opportunity to give answers. IIRC it took the fellow something like half an hour to realise that this is the GURPS IRC channel and not the Unity 3D one.

oh no lol

4 hours later…
10:08 PM
room topic changed to TRPG General Chat: Main chat room for tabletop role-playing games [dice] [pen-and-paper] [roleplaying]
Name change to help reduce confusion; TRPG has a lot fewer alternative meanings than RPG.
(I know my mother thinks of the programming language first when I mention RPG.)

10:24 PM
I rarely see it abbreviated with only one T
usually I see "TTRPG"

In my exposure, TRPG is becoming much more common in indie spaces.

Yeah, TableTop, bimorphemic just like RolePlay[ing].

Other sources seem to think it's the other way 'round.

Hmm. An amusing thing for a meta question.

Or we could ask etsy. [grin]
There's no need to standardize across the whole hobby, obviously. I prefer TRPG, for a variety of reasons not least of which is that it's faster to write and less awkward to say--especially in this era of online "tables".

10:41 PM
Oh, and roleplay isn't one word outside of some spaces in this particular hobby. It's usually hyphenated or just two words.

I guess my reaction is telling that I'm used to the Generic Universal RolePlaying System (spelled that way, though the word alone tends to not have the PascalCase throughout the rest of the books).
I do see that the all-knowing corporation sees about fourfold more cases with one T than with two.
