@LShaver It took about a month from signing to first direct deposits when Bush did it on 2008, IIRC.
@AndrasDeak (It's possible that someone dropped a link to this room in the mod-room.)
01:06
@nitsua60 It is also possible that about four of my light-hearted posts (rejoinder to Yuuki in re beer was one of them, kids playing with boxes was another) were removed from this chat for no good reason, and yet the owners keep the political discussion on screen. Not well done.
01:21
@KorvinStarmast you got a link to that timeline?

It's hard to keep a level head about all of this these days... Social media has blown the whole thing completely out of whack.
I'm even getting sick of the memes :/
"of"... "off"... maybe both...
This is your chance. This is your time. Get off social media.

I have been ignoring it for the past 2 weeks. Unfortunately I can't avoid it entirely; it's how my friends like to communicate with me
Particularly my GF, with her 2 boys. They have been feeling unwell lately, and the boys are staying home from school to avoid mass contact with others. So they've been pent up a bit and I have been trying to keep them calm. Lol
01:38
@Ben teach them the ways of Signal
@Ben What kind of social media do you use? Aggressively curating my social media experience has been crucial to what little mental health I'm clinging to.
It's okay to use the mute and block tools available to you; even though they aren't perfect they can help mitigate the experience. I regularly hit the 200-muted-keywords cap on Twitter.

Just facebook; and even that is limited to primarily humour pages.
And I choose who I'm following based on having a very clear, explicit mission statement for why I'm on a given social media platform, and pruning out everything that's not actively supporting that purpose.

I'll have to probably tell them to do the same - cut out the fat on social media
02:38
@NautArch yeah, here is where I noticed stuff missing, but as I said in the other chat, temporary annoyance, I am over it.
03:05
@nitsua60 inconveniently traditional explanation ;)

Wow
04:31
Don't forget what happened in Texas to the turban wearing gas station attendant after 911.
04:51
Balbir Singh Sodhi (1949 – September 15, 2001), a Sikh-American gas station owner in Mesa, Arizona, was murdered in a hate crime in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. This was the first of several cases across the United States that were reported to the police as supposed acts of retaliation for the attacks. Balbir Singh Sodhi, who wore a beard and a turban in accordance with his Sikh faith, was profiled as an Arab Muslim and murdered by 42-year-old Frank Silva Roque, a Boeing aircraft mechanic at a local repair facility who held a criminal record for an attempted robbery in California...
pardon my "frank/stark" presentation :(
Excellent educational video about the basic math of pandemics:
It's why I am home tonight.
05:20
So far there are only 4 confirmed cases in all of Alaska.
But I'm on immune-compromising drugs, and I know from experience that when I get sick, I get really sick.
So I would take up more than my fair share of needed health assets if I got sick.
Wow!!!
are you diabetic?
05:53
@skullpatrol No. I have MS and am on drugs to treat that. MS is an autoimmune disease.
I see.
So the drugs I am on specifically mess with my immune system.
I have been hospitalized in the past for infections of unknown etiology.
sounds like a good reason to go into complete isolation
"We" will always be here for you pal :-)
05:57
That's alright. I'm an internet nerd. I've been training for this, like, forever.
coolio
06:40
"No exist strategy" means the year 2020 is going to change our view of the world forever.
@nitsua60 Woot!
07:08
@skullpatrol Subscribed. If he keeps that up, I appreciate his end-of-day recap.
07:30
I always wondered how they make those "weakened virus" populations for vaccines, turns out the basic process is relatively simple: they "farm" the virus in a tissue culture or eg. a chicken embryo, then take a sample, and do it over and over recursively until the population is adapted to its new "host", and conversely adaptation towards humans hasn't been selected for.
Turns out it's even called "attenuated virus" in English
I wonder if hosts without an immune system would be optimal because layman's understanding of biology says that'd result in the virus being worse adapted for coping against immune systems.
08:04
*exit
d'oh!
08:14
@kviiri counterintuitively I suspect maybe not, because without an immune response there's less selection pressure on the virus and it won't have to adapt as much to thrive in the new host
@Carcer Good point. Although I reckon it might still work the other way, because there is still a selection element (human re-sampling the virus) which favors big spread in the intermediary host tissue.
Interesting topic to discuss – as long as we remember we're just laymen :)
(don't try making your own vaccines at home kids)
@kviiri it still seems like the adapted virus you sample will probably be able to thrive in humans
but yes, laymen.
@Carcer That's a possibility, cases of attenuated virus vaccines being able to regain virulence are rare but they occur. (And I think most of us have experienced some mini-illness from a vaccine)
09:04
Oh hey, a Finnish paper reports that Favipiravir / Avigan / whatevs is effective against COVID-19 if the treatment is began in the early phases of the infection.
I'm gonna see if I can find an English language source, the paper that reports this is certainly not the most reputable one.
The advantage would be that it's a drug already in use – so it requires little additional testing for safety, only effectiveness.

12:31
@kviiri (Unless the safety testing were predicated on a particular population being expected to take it, and that's going to shift. But still, probably you've got some lead-time on safety testing, even if not 100%.)
TIL Trump is the only president to have graduated from the university of pennsylvania
12:46
Whom he has sued....
(IIRC)
@nitsua60 yup, if they published his grades
13:02
Since Mr. Trump keeps getting mentioned, a friendly reminder that this room is primarily for RPG.SE folks to have a place to discuss the coronavirus pandemic. Discussion concerning the US policies concerning the coronavirus is okay as long as it stays nice to everyone involved, but unrelated discussion, praise or critique of Donald Trump's or anyone else's personality or policies should go elsewhere. Thanks

@skillpatrol Please do not introduce political discussions, we are really trying to keep this friendly and about the virus.
thank you :)

@kviiri "Primarily for RPG.SE folks"... What did I do? :'( :P
@kviiri I had an omelet for breakfasts. Close enough? ;-)
@Mithrandir24601 OK, we welcome our now and again visitor from SFF :-)
And with a name like Mithrandir you have to fit into RPGSE somehow, don't you?
@KorvinStarmast Wait, I'm from SFF?
@KorvinStarmast I know peoples from RPG.SE, does that count?
@Mithrandir24601 Heh, I remember seeing your name there when I visited once, so you have to be from SFF. no, wait, quantum computing, must have been a different Mithrandir...
@Mithrandir24601 Of course it does, as long as you stay six feet away and soak yourself in hand santizer at all times .. is there a cantrip that does that?
@Mithrandir24601 (Your blue chat name only show Mithrandir, the 24601 is hidden)
@KorvinStarmast Bwahaha! There's more than one of us :D
@Mithrandir24601 Uh oh, the MIthrandir virus of 2020 began with an innocuous meeting in a chat room .... scared face
15:56
The real question is, how many of us are there? How many of us hidden in secret, just waiting to reveal our true selves?
16:07
@Mithrandir24601 We welcome all. Would you like to play a game?
@NautArch I would... But I also need to work :/

Q: Why are victims of Covid19 being wrapped in plastic?

CodyBugsteinSeveral articles describe the unique ways Covid-19 patients are being buried. For example, in this Reuters article about Israel: These included decontaminating and hermetically wrapping bodies in double layers of polyethylene. For Jewish dead, ritual washing of the body would be conducte...

The article's in Spanish, but it's the video that's important: elpais.com/videos/2020-03-18/…
@Mithrandir24601 It's just the purpose of the room. We wanted to create our chatizens a place to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic without overburdening our main and offtopic rooms.
That's not to say others aren't welcome of course, but just that I expect the same level of behavior from visitors as I would on the RPG.SE chats.
@kviiri Oh I know, of course, I was just joking that I'm not a regular RPG.SE user
Not everyone in our chat is, either :P
At times I feel the chat and the main site differ in many things
@Mithrandir24601 Mithrandir comes around here occasionally, then disappears for years at a time. Usually, when he comes, he brings fireworks that amuse us little folk =)
that video was a firecracker :(
