12:03 AM
2 hours, 2 candidates, and still just 90 seconds per candidate?

12:59 AM
so I gather that Joe is just making shit up?

@Unionhawk the thing about support for Reagan’s social security cuts in an op ed by Sanders is true too
So both of them are making some stuff up
Based on scrolling through the Congress website on my phone Biden does not seem to have made any amendments to the bankruptcy bill after it got to the floor

@TimStone I somehow missed this earlier, and wow. This is why your country is so politically divided(and fucked). One half of that divide is made up of people like this.

2 hours later…
Why does twitter tell me "we found that this nazi you reported is indeed a nazi" but not suspend them or even delete any of the tweets I report?
like really @jack you have one job
well actually two
or maybe none
In my complicated assessment with many very scientifically measured things I have determined that it will be very difficult for the democrat to avoid winning the general
there are many states that could flip and have Biden polling slightly above Trump
RCP poll averages have Biden up 3.8 & 4.8 points in PA and MI, respectively
AZ and NC also have Biden up by similar amounts
WI is a tie
With just 2016's map but winning any combination of three of those (except AZ + NC + WI, which is 269) the Democrat wins by a few electoral votes
so maybe not extremely hard, but there are a lot of winning combinations that could reasonably happen
Florida polls just slightly for Trump and if the Democrat wins Florida along with one other of those 5 states it is a win
And if they somehow won Texas but it were otherwise the 2016 map it would be a win by 1 vote (extremely unlikely that Texas would be won without it being a landslide in other states)
All of this is assuming that (historical) swing states like NV, CO, ME, and NH are won again

1 hour later…

7 hours later…
11:53 AM
Ah cool
Glad we set like 2 trillion dollars on fire that's now just zeroed out instead of using it to help people directly

12:05 PM
Look it's fine it was a loan and we can always go after the banks assets, checks notes other people's money
Still can't believe this, lol
"THE PANDEMIC IS NOT OUR BURDEN TO BEAR"
Pandemic: ???

There's apparently some bar in Ohio that is refusing the order which
seems like a bold strategy for a liquor license having business

Yeah I guess the same is true for these places in DC, since it's DC?
I would simply not kill my patrons to spite the government, if I owned a business

I mean more in the sense that it seems like a good way to uh, lose your liquor license

12:29 PM
Yeah I just meant since DC has no governor that pissing off the DC mayor seemed like it would also result in that, lol

12:40 PM
Yeah true I guess she is the governor of DC
Actually the president might be the governor of DC
but as a dumb symbolic title

@TimStone Can't let employees getting sick get in the way of all your moooooooooooooooooooooney

lmfao very good Brian what the economy really needs is a drastic and immediate supply chain shift
China did a very bad thing and China should be ashamed but this as a response is actually just dumb
A prerequisite for Fox & Friends, granted, but my word

I mean I'm all for enforcing stronger restrictions on countries you import from, but now isn't the time.

Also I guess now that it's bad it's not a hoax?

Although I can't help but wonder how he'd feel if Canada was suddenly all "If you want us to work with you, you need to stop discriminating against LGBT+ people"
@TimStone No see, now Trump has said it's real

@TimStone Oh good, just what we need

Eyyyyy bird flu in the Philippines welcome to the party

@TimStone wait is it just a bird thing?

Maybe Corona and Bird FLu was the giant meteor we needed all along
@Stormblessed No. It's just that birds are carriers, which then transfer it to humans.
And then the humans transform into deformed human-bird hybrids.

oh shit

12:58 PM
Maybe the viruses hate each other, let_them_fight.gif

We do at least know mostly how to handle influenza

wait it broke

@Stormblessed I get it. That's funny.

@Wipqozn Shouldn't it be 8 years?

yeah

1:01 PM
Mayan prophecy was in 2012

@Nzall Yeah, but there'll still be a few folks struggling for life in 2022

TWO MORE YEARS! TWO MORE YEARS! TWO MORE YEARS!

My office has gone purely WFH for now. A lot of other offices are doing the same.
The premier also said they'll be instructing all international travellers they need to self isolate for 14 days, but they made it really unclear if that means they'll be doing "Please do this" or if they'll somehow be trying to force you!?

@Wipqozn is the premier like a governor?

It's like an emperor of canada

1:05 PM
@Stormblessed Yeah, except the name sounds cooler

definitely

Now you might be thinking "isn't the queen the emperor of canada"

@Unionhawk No, that's the ruler of the Shadow Cabinet.

Which province are you in?

and the answer to that is yes

1:05 PM
@Stormblessed Nova Scotia

however

@Wipqozn oh I know where that is. It's in Canada

ALL HAIL EMPEROR THE QUEEN

(they do not teach us canadian geography here ever)

The main thing to remember is that we were featured in an episode of Archer once
Also that Trailer Park Boys show is from Nova Scotia
or so I hear. I've never watched it.

@TimStone OKay so setting aside the fact this is unethical, also what
"Let's get our healthcare workers really sick during the middle of a pandemic"

Look he was just thinking (?) boldy

Ah my bad. Didn't mean to question his boldness.

@Wipqozn I mean, considering they can be infectious for like 5 weeks...

You guys need better officials

I know what, you all can have Doug ford and jason kennedy, and we'll take SAnders and AOC!

> “It’s basically using up all their ammunition within a three-week span,” said Mr. Wong. “There’s nothing left. They can’t use monetary loosening as part of their arsenal anymore.”
Narrator: Oh but they'd try!

@TimStone imo they really should avoid doing that unless they are 99% sure it will actually help
because after doing that they don't have any further down to go to boost stocks

Yeah but the President was Mad Online!

no you see other countries have a negative rate

1:12 PM
seems like using all the cards too early
@Unionhawk wait what??
wouldn't it be more effective to just not do bonds or whatever they're called?

is it like "hi government here are 10 bucks" and later "thank you for that, here are 8 dollars back" @Unionhawk

Won't someone please think of the 1% during these hard timeS?

yeah he said that yesterday and I was like "yeah, I don't think that's how it works my man"

1:20 PM
@TimStone TFW even your own propaganda thinks you're going too far...

@Unionhawk problem is that alot of the advice is to look out/avoid people with flu like symptoms. for a system that's not even keeping up with COVID-19 just imagine how things will go when you have to deal with people with Bird Flu symptoms thinking it's COVID-19

if flu-like symptoms, test for both, if influenza treat for that, if not manage symptoms

@Stormblessed Narrator: It did not help
> Dow plunges 2,250 points, 9.7%, as more of US economy shuts down, Fed makes emergency rate cut; oil prices fall sharply.

1:36 PM
We're hitting that 13% circuit breaker today for sure

Trading was halted within seconds of the opening bell

Yeah premarket was already -9

@TimStone damn
next time one of these happens there should be a bailout for everyone except the stock people

@TimStone oh yeh, the whole "let everyone get infected and those who don't die create heard immunity" falls on it's ass when this isn't like chicken pox and we still don't have a vaccine

1:48 PM

$SPY is the one to watch
next is -13%
now -10%

So I should have held off on my extra investment contributions for a bit longer?

like I don't get why the people who freak out, sell everything, and crash the economy further should be the ones who get billions of government dollars

@TimStone was anyone credible (alot of Fox Presenters) saying this except from Trump?
infact i would not be surprised in Fox just echoed what the president said

@MBraedley Should have bought gold checks notes

1:50 PM
@Stormblessed from what i understand it's mainly AI's doing this

Okay you should have just set your money on fire instead

my campaign promise is to just not have stocks

@TimStone hey look at least it's beating S&P

it's a great economic theory

like from what i learned during AI in University is that alot of trading is done by AI's who can make snap decisions and when they get it wrong, it can trigger a cascade

1:51 PM
if the economy doesn't exist, you can't have bad economic numbers
@Memor-X someone was telling me that a lot of the reason the stocks go up and down so quickly during the day is that if one AI sells or buys a lot, a bunch of other ones do the same thing

Pretty wild that in the midst of all this it randomly comes out that RuPaul's been fracking

@TimStone wait what?

rupaul apparently owns a bunch of land in wyoming and leases a bunch of it to oil and gas

If things continue to slide, I might just put more money in.

1:56 PM
It's honestly one of the dumbest things I've seen this week

@Stormblessed yeh. perfect example of this can be seen in Spice and Wolf when Lawrence has that bet with that kid who's fallen for Holo and want to "buy her freedom" (it was a joke from Holo). when Lawrence and Holo sell some metal (i think) it triggers everyone else to sell. then you get that in a split second because AI's work insanely more faster than a human (and a wise wolf god)

we impose sanctions on medical supplies to iran so I mean yeah that checks out

@TimStone week starts on monday
should be monday or past that now in the world. it's tuesday for me now

1:59 PM
It's unrelated but technically counts as being more dumb now that the market has erased the gains over his entire presidency

@TimStone and yet he'll cherry pick and brag about how strong the economy is

There was also a poll about possible VPs that was pretty, yeah
Guess who got 16% in that poll

@Unionhawk Gritty?

I'll give you a hint they were the 2016 democratic nominee for president

Oh I thought there was a poll to replace Mike Pence

2:01 PM
@Unionhawk wait what

.......i'm sticking with my answer

I like Hillary, but that would be a Bad Idea

Anyway it will be extremely funny when Mike Pence gets the bus because he was "in charge" of the coronavirus response
Unless we're all dead. It won't be funny then

just saw a clip of Trump talking about the fed rate dropping from 1 to 0.something and dropping from 0 to 0.2
this year can you guys elect someone who has some basic math skills

@TimStone what does that expression mean? I've never heard it

2:04 PM
I was just abbreviating throwing him under the bus

oh duh
I wonder how many kids don't have school now

2:32 PM
So I imagine this is already linked somewhere in the past 24 hours, but worth bumping:
> According to the German newspaper Die Welt am Sonntag, which first reported the story on Sunday, Mr. Trump offered CureVac roughly $1 billion in exchange for exclusive access to the vaccine. The newspaper quoted an unnamed German government source who said Mr. Trump wanted the resulting vaccine “only for the United States.”
> But another German official, reached by The New York Times, said it was unclear whether the administration simply wanted the research work, and for any resulting production to be on American soil.
What's unclear to me is under what auspices these financial offers were being made...
As President of the United States? Is our government even in the business of buying out foreign companies?
In his capacity as CEO of Trump, Inc?

@BradC Yeah, Wipqozn has already mentioned it yesterday

Probably more like a "Trump didn't recognize and/or understand the actual implications of such an offer"
Some follow-up today:

@BradC I assume it was specifically for the vaccine formulation, which e.g. NIH could subsequently make available to select manufacturers
Wasn't expecting that emotional drop at the end there
"Cancelled for World War II…and because Harry wanted to do some construction"

@TimStone I mean, you don't want to end up with any nasty lawsuits because a child fell into a woodchipper

Oh, of course not, it's just funny in the comparative gravity of the situations

2:47 PM
Many historians are calling the 48-52 renovations "world war 3"
for values of "many historians are" equal to "I am"

Truman's war on style

@TimStone No no no, they're immune now! That government official said so!
but yeah, getting reinfected seems to be common
IT'S GREAT
Justin is addressing Canada again in 2 hours
Maybe he'll announce more lockdown
or maybe he'll just be all "PAAAANIC! EVERY CANADIAN FOR THEMSELVES! WE MUST INFECT OUR DOCTORS!"

Narrator: The dead would not, in fact, end up being stronger than ever before
Hmm unless they're vengeful ghosts now
He also announced 5000 medical volunteer corps activated, and no utility is permitted to cut service or charge late fees (including phone and internet)

3:33 PM
fing dying right now, "Ah yeah the mayor's gonna lose his shit because he can't go to the gym but yeah no we have this under control"

3:48 PM
…Did not expect Romney to pivot to Yang Gang but uhhh, here we are?

4:11 PM
@TimStone what??!

I think we're just reaching the point where not doing anything is untenable, any given person (voter) will likely know multiple people impacted negatively. So it's either expand social programs or give people money, I guess

I think from an ideological point there is a huge difference between UBI in general, and a time-limited measure during a crisis.

@TimStone I mean breyer and ginsburg should have retired in 2011
tbf

4:19 PM
@TimStone it certainly makes sense to buy at some point if you can, but I doubt that point is right now. I would suspect that stocks will continue to fall for a while

It's also weird messaging for a government! "Sure people are still dying but have you considered buying stonks?"
It's part of his job function but maybe just don't go on the show for a bit idk

4:34 PM
@TimStone Also being proposed by uhh Tom Cotton?
It's weird because I assumed he would also want the poor to die out of spite like he did Obama's nominee
Anyway it's great that the Democrats did some dumb compromise or whatever with the White House just so the Senate Republicans could come in and say "Actually we will save you"

You mean to tell me that "we'll guarantee paid sick leave* *for companies with >50 and <500 employees" isn't the epic clapback that they thought it was

Look corporations have the ability to take care of their workers we don't need to give them handouts taps earpiece I'm sorry I'm being told now they don't give a shit and won't

> South Korean church sprayed salt water inside followers' mouths, believing it would prevent coronavirus. 46 people got infected because they used the same nozzle

4:50 PM
bill go home

Just embarrassing to be the mayor of New York and get owned by either of the Cuomos

Which one would be more embarrassing

Hm
Tough call in a trying time

Like on one hand one of them is the governor of new york and kind of your boss, but on the other hand one of them is not the governor of new york so?

4:57 PM
Inland Empire [Medium - Success]: one of them is not the governor of new york, yet
todo: play more disco elysium

@Unionhawk oh god no
Resolving the strife between the NY Governor and NYC Mayor by making Chris Cuomo the latter
Joint biweekly presser called the Cuomo Conversation

The Cuomo-calypse.

5:39 PM
looks like the restrictions are getting quite a bit more serious here in Germany

5:58 PM
@MadScientist Same in Canada
Trudeau is just finishing up a press conference now.
So bullet points from Trudeau's current address is:
- Canada banning entry to most non-residents
- Airlines ordered to ban anyone showing symptoms from boarding
- Arrangements will be made to assist stranded Canadian citizens (this might be trying to get them home, or just providing financial support for those that they can't/won't get home)
- Only four airports will accept international flights
US Citizens will still be allowed entry
Which is wild, considering how poorly handled the situation is in the US. But our economies are so intertwined, I'm sure that's why.
I fully expect the US to have one of the worst break outs and death rates of Covid-19.

Wow that stat someone threw out on the CBC news cast was wild

@RedRiderX Which stat?

25,000 tests done in Canada, 23,000 tests done in the US
Really want a citation on that one.

6:14 PM
Wasn't there a study awhile back on how banning travel didn't help with preventing pandemic spread?

@Yuuki Yeah a reporter brought that up as a question

Something like "if someone has the virus and wants to get home to get treatment, they're going to get home because they're fearing for their life" or something like that?

I'd be curious to see more details around that study tbh

I think Trudeau's response was "the doctors said it might help".

I do appreciate how everyone's getting increasingly racist as this thing spreads.

6:17 PM
@Wipqozn here all non-essential stores are closed, restaurants and anything else is closed, hotels are only for non-holiday stays, mass in churches is disallowed

@MadScientist They've banned larger gatherings, but that's about it.
NSLC (alchohol) will be closing tomorrow, supposedly.

they're even closing playgrounds

Just Nova Scotia, I think. Unionized.
@MadScientist Makes sense. I feel like playgrounds are probably a hot bed of disease.

I'm a bit impressed how far they actually went, I expected slightly softer measures

Canada don't fuck around when it comes to Covid, it seems.
Sounds like they'll be greeting all canadians coming home with guidance that they should self isolate, along with some information on how to go about that, and resources they'll have available to them. This includes financial support.
They'll all need to sign that they've received this information too before they've left the airport.

6:36 PM
Now I'm unsure if there's any special consideration I need to take when going to places like the grocery store
Since the official word is "stay at home, please"

I should probably buy a few frozen pizzas

@RedRiderX well, you can't avoid buying food. I'm mostly just trying to keep a bit of distance in lines, and avoid touching my face while outside, and wash my hands immediately when returning home

Yeah the washing hands thing is probably the best advice
That and I already go to the grocery store at strange hours already
so probably won't be many people there.

and of course right now I avoid touching unpackaged food and putting it back

I just go around coughing so I can cut in lines

6:44 PM
Jumped out to me when I realized that's a grocery store I've been to a number of times.

> “Respirators, ventilators, all of the equipment — try getting it yourselves,” Mr. Trump told the governors during the conference call

@RedRiderX uh... amazon fresh is looking increasingly appealing right now

@MadScientist The complete and utter ineptitude at display is just unreal.
American friends, it's been great knowing you. I'm sorry when the Covid-19 gets all of you due to poor leadership.
The GOP are as much to blame for this as Trump. They had a chance to remove him from office, but they refused.

yeah board of elections texted me like 'hey we need poll workers' and
no
thanks

@TimStone the timing with the primary really complicates stuff.

@Wipqozn I feel like y'all cheated by having enough space for everyone to stand a kilometer apart, the people crazy enough to live on an island exempt

@TimStone I mean, that's completely fair.

7:14 PM
Netherlands is going to try herd immunity

@MadScientist Not sure what that means when there's no vaccine

@Wipqozn it means only limited social distancing, and no shutdowns like in other countries

Basically isolate everyone who's vulnerable, then when 60-80% of the population has the virus "naturally" they can stop the social distancing

Don't repeated cases show that immunity isn't easily gained, though?

I don't think we know much yet, as far as I understand some limited immunity is very like in any case, but it is unclear how long it lasts. I've no idea of whether this kind of virus mutates enough to make it difficult like influenza
press conference is starting

I mean it's Eternal 2016 so it probably evolves faster than a bug pokemon

@MadScientist @Wipqozn To chip in what you probably already know, coronavirus is an RNA virus, the family of which are more prone to mutation than DNA viruses.
(one strand of genetic code instead of two)

@puzzlepiece87 as far as I remember Influenza has some special features that lead to the many different strains and no global immunity against it, high mutation rate isn't enough

and it sounds like the US will only go with "strong recommendations", nothing stronger (federally)

@MadScientist Just to clear up because I just mentioned literal strands of DNA, I'm guessing you meant many different strains.
@MadScientist @PrivatePansy @Wipqozn Are you sure the way we characterized the Netherlands here is correct? Compare to here

@puzzlepiece87 It's kinda hard to tell when you don't speak the language and can't go to the original sources

7:42 PM
"we have a problem that a month ago nobody ever thought about"

Proposal to determine NBA 2020 champion: each team holds an intra-team tournament, then the winner represents their franchise in a 32 team, best two out of three tournament.
@MadScientist Remarkably dumb to admit you've never thought about bioterrorism as the head of one of the biggest targets in the world.

8:04 PM
Dow is continuing to fall. Down over 10% today, more than 2400 points
Over the past month its gone from over 29k to under 21k, nearly a 30% overall drop

8:26 PM
Seems like uhhhh not the opportune time but okay

My work just announced WFH/in the office repeating alternations by week.

9:39 PM
@BradC wow

@Stormblessed closed almost 3k down

Wikipedia says that today was the worst Dow Jones day ever
So were 3/12, 3/9, & 2/27
Maybe it is not a good idea to do stocks right now, in any capacity

it's kind of painful to look at the value of my investments right now

10:19 PM
Yeah setting acorns to "no round ups no recurring" lol
at least I'll get a small capital loss next year, since I'm also shifting to a less aggressive portfolio

@Stormblessed alternately, a really good time to do stocks since they're cheap

My losses are not as bad as the DAX or the S&P500, so it doesn't look like my portfolio is too aggressive

and assuming we're not heading into an apocalypse, in which case your stock portfolio is likely your least concern

I'll certainly start buying some in a few weeks

grimaces at timing the market

10:29 PM
@Yuuki but they might stay down for a long time

@puzzlepiece87 I'm not really timing, I'll start some monthly buy orders and spread it out in any case

the mechanisms to stop/slow decline have been largely very ineffective

@Stormblessed I have probably at least 30 years until retirement, if they stay down that long we're in serious trouble of some kind in any case
I still can't entirely believe that I'm seeing essentially the world shutting down for business, and serious restrictions on free movement in most big democracies.

10:50 PM
Ah apparently also being suspended, justice

@MadScientist yeah... I'm talking about more short-term actually trying to make money. The Great Depression was only 3.6 years; 30 years sounds impossible.
@TimStone what is apparently being suspended?

Justice, we're not doing justice anymore
(As long as you do crimes the president likes)

@Stormblessed I bought my first funds shortly before the dotcom crash, so I know that sometimes it also goes down very sharply.
