@JMac yes those were pretty old questions of mine so and they stopped getting upvote after 3 days of being asked. But suddenly 7 old post were upvoted in very short amount of time. I believe this is a case of serial upvoting.
Hello everyone. I recently read this question physics.stackexchange.com/questions/16160/…. Now can someone tell me that if we have an object of mass say 10000kg and velocity 0.1m/s and a bullet of mass 0.01kg and velocity 1000m/s both have same area of cross section, would the damage on object(which is rigid and cannot move) they have been fired at still be same?
@JohnRennie Sir, since the kinetic energy of both is same they would travel equal distance before coming to rest so what are the other different ways damage would occur?
@Physicsfreak Suppose you're standing in front of the 10 tonne object moving at 0.1 m/s. When it hits you it will just push you out of the way and no harm will be done. The bullet will go straight through you instead of pushing you out of the way.
@Physicsfreak As long as it's only moving at 0.1m/s it will still just push you out of the way.
Imagine I poke you with the end of a stick at 0.1m/s. It would just push you away.
It you had yoru back to a cliff and couldn't move out of the way that would be different. In that case the stick would spear you at 0.1m/s, which would be a gruesome way to die! :-)
@JohnRennie I found this question on earth science SE. One thing that surprised me was that many people in the comment were surprised by the Shell Theorem.
We all know users on our PSE come from all parts of the world and it seems obvious that if someone is using the internet he/she must be writing and understanding English properly. But in some countries the web pages are purely in regional language and therefore users from those regions (of course...
@Knight If there are wrong things in your answer you should fix it. It might not seem like it to you, but David is trying to assist you in fixing that answer.
@PM2Ring Sir I fixed t today, that clarification is added today only.
@PM2Ring He is spamming because he is understanding something else from my answer and showing no signs of learning about why wrote it and keeps on commenting “you’re wrong”.
@Knight The term "spam" on Stack Exchange sites means commercial spam: posts intended to obtain some kind of financial advantage, like advertising. Don't use spam flags for posts that aren't commercial spam. Actual spamming carries heavy penalties.
@Knight The OP is asking about the position vector. They aren't interested in that r radius vector that your answer talks about.
I have read many different rocket equation derivations but I do not understand them. Here is my derivation:
At time $t$, assume we have an accelerating rocket with mass $m$ and velocity $v$. At time $t+\delta t$, the rocket would have ejected post-reaction propellant with mass $\delta m$ at exha...
@Knight On mobile scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the "full site" button. Then you can flag comments. To switch back to mobile, do the same thing, but now there is a "mobile" button
@AaronStevens I suppose it does, but I decided not to VTC because the OP is asking what conceptual error they made, they aren't merely asking us to locate an error in their algebra. But I guess it's a borderline case.
@Knight Your answer could undergo some improvements. The cool thing about SE is that you can edit your post, not just add to it. So instead of keeping your confusing stuff the same and then adding a "clarification" section, you can just edit your answer to be clear from the beginning.
@JMac True, but on these sites that gives you 4 different options, since you can select mobile or full on the site itself independently of selecting mobile or desktop in the browser.
@JMac Trying to improve a suggested edit on a phone is almost impossible...
@PM2Ring Even just looking at suggested edits can be complicated enough on a desktop. I wouldn't want to review them let alone try to improve them on a phone.
On the mobile site, the edit button disappears if there's a pending suggested edit. But if you go to full site, a nightmare begins to unfold. ;) As Aaron said, you have to disable responsiveness, and select the desktop site in your browser. And even then it's a major pain.
They intend to get rid of the mobile view. I really hope they improve the responsive full site view before that happens. Luckily, the dev Yaakov is happy to receive constructive feedback.
Interesting. I know I tried out the mobile app for a little bit a couple of years ago. I forget why I stopped using it. I wasn't as familiar with the site, policies, etc., so I don't trust the "insight" I had back then
A Stack Exchange employee just said the following regarding the mobile site:
We are actively working on the responsive design that works on both desktop and mobile, based on screen size. Once that is finished and perfected, mobile web will be slated for complete removal.
I was recently visi...
@PM2Ring Well then if they get rid of the mobile view, and there ends up being no good alternative for using SE on mobile, then that might help me spend less time on my phone :P
@AaronStevens The mobile apps are dead. The only bug fixes for them are fixes to the API, server side. The apps themselves aren't getting any more fixes, and haven't for some time. But some people still like to use them for some types of notifications, I forget the details.
@PM2Ring The app was nice for notifications. You could get a ping when you got tagged in a comment and stuff. The issue is that I found that as annoying as it was useful.
yeah, but usually, when you apply logarithms for numerical stability you use the rule: log(a*b*c*d*e...) -> log(a) + log(b) + log(c) + ... But now I cannot just to the same thing, because there is no rule for Log( A + B + C + ...)
Liquid oxygen has an expansion ratio of 860:1. This means that as it boils off from -297°F to ambient, it expands 860 times its volume. This is why aircraft have “build-up” coils” that allow the liquid to expand into gaseous form prior to the oxygen breathing regulators. In the LOX servicing c...
Should I remove the last portion of the text where he states that he is from NASA,etc.
@AaronStevens once I wrote that but after sometime a user removed it from the post. Then onwards I don't write thanks, hope this helps, etc. Also these things don't add much value to the post and any way if the user finds some answer as helpful then they can upvote it and/or tick it.
There was a mother meta post a while back to the effect of "maybe being polite actually does serve a purpose, and we shouldn't insta-delete comments that express thanks"
@rob Yeah I can see that point of view. I flag "thank you comments" as "no longer needed" simply due to the policy and the fact that the comment box says not to do it. If that policy changed I wouldn't mind though. Although I do like the idea of comments only being for clarification/suggestions so that they can be deleted once they are addressed. It makes the posts less cluttered
@JohanLiebert Yes, there's a fairly prolific user who always puts that at the end of his answer. Ideally, he shouldn't do that, but OTOH I don't think it would be nice to get into a confrontation with him about it.
@Knight You can see the processing status of your flags when you click on the "X helpful flags" line in your profile. Here's a direct link for your users in case you're on mobile.
@PM2Ring yes given that these are present in every post of the said user. I don't think it would be any helpful if someone went on spree to remove them!
@Knight It was pretty obvious. That user has complained in this room and on Physics meta about getting downvotes & having his posts downvoted or closed for being unclear.
Wow reviewing my of flags: physics.stackexchange.com/a/314652/127931 This really got disputed for a "not an answer" flag? I don't understand how this has 2 positive votes let alone lasted several years. It doesn't answer the question, doesn't explain how it works, and the link broke
@AaronStevens I usually remove "superfluous politeness" like thank-you comments if I encounter them in a discussion that has clearly ended --- e.g. one that's been inactive for a month or more. But I don't remove fresh ones because I think it's useful for a user to have a chance to notice they have been thanked. I haven't discussed this with the rest of the diamond mods, though.
@ACuriousMind I'm really surprised John okayed that. It's really not an answer to what is actually asked, and with the link broken it's essentially a picture saying that they can make a charger out of springs (even though the question was about batteries in the first place, not chargers).
@JohnRennie I guess I just really don't see it as an answer here, because they are asking why it's not done, and if it could be feasible/practical to use springs as a battery. An answer saying "I made a charger with a spring" doesn't really answer if it's feasible or address why you wouldn't do it, and it seems to be a charger not a battery anyways, which is also different.
@JohnRennie But I guess my point is, in this case it's not even a crappy answer. It is literally not an answer to the question. I have no more information about why you wouldn't use springs as a battery after reading that. I don't even get any information about the feasibility of it because he seems to be making a charger, not a battery.
@JohnRennie When a question gets roomba'd for low score and age, all answers are deleted by community, too. The only other "deletion by community" is for spam or r/a flags
@JohnRennie But without knowing how this operates, it's not clear if it's even storing energy, or if it's just just springs as part of the energy transfer. A charger is very different than a battery, at least definitionally, because one stores energy and the other just transmits it. Plus no one else even DV'd the answer so it still looks like it's well received even though it's almost objectively bad.
Anyhow the no. 1 most annoying thing about reviews, by a long way, is the 20 review limit. And that's obviously here to stay since years of moaning about it have had no effect.
@JohnRennie I agree. And yet I can currently raise 100 flags a day now, which I never get close to that. I feel like there should be at least some sort of increase for trusted users. Or maybe a separation of posts you are the first one to VTC and the posts you VTC in the queue
I don't like VTC too much in the queues because then I can't VTC new questions if I have used up all my votes in the queue
@Knight I realized that what I said was already clarified in your post therefore I deleted my comment. After that I haven't yet compared it with other post. Nor I was able to think what $\omega \cdot r$ might mean so I can't say much about it.
@Knight Comment flags get marked as "helpful" when the comment they refer to is deleted. In this case you should not interpret this as the moderator handling the flag agreeing with you - the comment was deleted because the comment it referred to was deleted.
@Knight yes I think he was a bit rude. He could have pointed out something (if any) in much more gentler manner. Anyway rudeness of a high rep is what lead to the fragmentation of the earlier Physics. SE community.
There is nothing rude or inappropriate about David voicing his opinion that your answer is incorrect, regardless of whether it actually is correct or not.
So I usually try to do about half of my votes in the queue and then that reserves the other half for if I encounter a new question I think should be closed
@ACuriousMind Yes I totally agree with that, but He is showing no signs for understanding about what I’m saying. You see @JohanLiebert he got me in just one go, Jalfred (he commented) has not replied till now and we can assume that he got satiated.
@AaronStevens Back when I wasn't a mod I always first went through the new questions to VTC "fresh" ones and only spent the remainder in the queue. But, yes, sadly, on many days there weren't enough votes at all.
@ACuriousMind I feel like I would be fine with about 20 VTCs in the close queue and 20 VTCs for questions that currently have not VTCs on them. But maybe that is too much power :P
@JohanLiebert I am not so concerned with making sure the queue is cleared as much as I am of just running out of votes in general. But thanks for the aid :)
@AaronStevens It would lead to a weird side-effect where people could effectively do 40 reviews by opening the first twenty questions from the queue in a different tab and vote on them there
Oh, you meant question with no VTCs on them yet, hmm...
@ACuriousMind @JohanLiebert What happened? I told to keep an eye on him because he is doing so good, I really didn’t understand what was the need of the word “omniuos” here. Just observe that Semoi, he is working too good.
@Knight Oh! But it really didn't sound that good when commented. It looked like I am a CBI agent and you have hired me to look at a particular users. 😂
@Knight It was the initial way you said it. Without context it sounds odd. You could have said something like "Semoi has lately been making some pretty good posts. You should make sure to look out for more of his posts."
The line about doing you a favor is mostly at fault here, I think - when someone says "Do me a favor and keep an eye on X", X is usually something that leads to trouble, not something good. (And I'm not quite sure how this is doing you a favor in the case when X has no potential for trouble)
@Knight it came like surprise element so I didn't knew what to say and how to interpret it. But I believed that you had good intentions. But it still seems a bit odd. :-)
@Knight I didn't say it sounded unconventional. I said it sounds like a criticism. Like you're suspicious of him, for some reason.
But as I said a while ago, I often find your use of English rather strange, and you often say things that are misunderstood, or you misunderstand other people.
@PM2Ring hahahaha, sir when I misunderstood other people? It would nice to know. I really respect you therefore I asked you to see that post of mine in meta.
@Knight Uhhh, no, but I used "referring" there in a confusing way, I'll admit. The following happened: You flagged comment B. Comment B was a reply to comment A. A was not aimed at improving or clarifying the post (it was your comment telling him you'd flag his comments - don't do that, by the way, just flag), so it was deleted. B no longer made sense, so it was deleted, too.
@Knight When you first started posting in this room I assumed that English is not your mother tongue. But you said that you were born in the USA. So I was puzzled why your English is so bad. But after reading that meta post of yours I get the feeling that English may not be the only language you speak at home.
Anyone has seen that video of Jimmy Kimmel (in which he is dressed as pig)? I believe that the girl were actors rather that being unaware of the case. Anyway what he did was psychologically wrong if the kids were unaware.
Some cats will purr if you look at them nicely, others only when they're really relaxed and content. Like humans, they vary greatly in their expression of affection :P
@JohanLiebert If it's purring it's probably just looking for attention and someone to pet it (though I wouldn't recommend petting random cats as some can be pretty aggressive)
@Knight I find your use of English a little unusual. I assumed that English wasn't your mother tongue, so I was a little surprised when you said you were in the USA.
Growing up, we had an old grumpy cat that I only ever heard purring when one of us was sick. He'd climb up to the "patient" and start purring loudly. The rest of the time, you could be happy if he didn't claw at you :P
@PM2Ring Sir English and that regional dialect both are taught to me. So, therefore I assumed that it was right to say that English is one of my mother tongue.
@AaronStevens My cat was evil. He would relentlessly attack anyone who didn't live in the house, and would still sometimes attack us. I miss the guy, but not having an arm full of cuts is nice.
@JMac Yeah I had a nice cat growing up. My brother's cat doesn't like anyone except him and his wife. They are going to have a baby in May, so we will see what happens then :P
But yeah... I will just be sitting at the table and then all of a sudden my arm is getting clawed
@Knight So you led me to believe that either you were just very bad at communicating, or that you were simply lying for some reason. That's probably not what you intended...
I like how google shows me "Arizona Public Service" before "American Physical Society". Yes google, I'm looking up power companies in Arizona for some reason...
@Knight So you should have explained that English isn't your only language. And then I would have been more tolerant of all your grammatical errors and strange ways of expressing things.
@PM2Ring Please first tell me are you talking friendly to me or did I do something which caused an irritation to you? I beg your forgiveness if I have ever done something wrong to you.
@JohanLiebert They're often ignored if they can be, but sometimes bad grammar/word choice can lead to conversations where two people wind up talking about different things right past each other.
@Knight You didn't irritate me, exactly. I assumed that you didn't intend to mislead me, but I got the feeling that you weren't being completely honest with me.
@enumaris (read this in a Morgan Freeman voice for maximum effect) "Little did enumaris know that the video he made was about to become the biggest internet meme of all time."
@PM2Ring Sir there you see, you are talking to me for my sake (lying to you may result me losing a great man like you) but see other people here they are thinking that I’m mocking you. I knew you were talking about my goodness only otherwise why will a self-taught mathematician would spend a time on me.
@JohanLiebert What JMac said. Chat is a little more relaxed than the main site, but we still need clear communication here, especially when we're discussing technical matters. On the main site, answers and questions should use good English.
Videos of yourself are so weird to watch when you rarely record yourself doing anything. I had to do a little interview video with a company we work with and when I watched it again it was just so weird seeing a recording of myself. After all these years I still find it so jarring to hear myself recorded and played back to me.
@enumaris Yeah I was helping a company we work with make a video on what it's like to collaborate with them. Going back to review the footage to decide if we would use it was so awkward. Especially stuff like "you're sitting awkwardly in the chair, so try not to do that next time". So then you're like distracted by the way you're sitting for the next try.
@enumaris We had movie magic on our side. Basically we did like three runs, first one was like ".... uh.... well... um..." but by the third try I basically had a script in my head. Thankfully it was also only like 2 mins of footage.
Skynet is srsly becoming reality man...yesterday I saw another article about how the army is using ML on infrared imagery to do facial recognition in the dark
Hinglish, a portmanteau of Hindi and English, is the macaronic hybrid use of English and languages of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, involving code-switching between these languages whereby they are freely interchanged within a sentence or between sentences. The word Hinglish is first recorded in 1967. Other colloquial portmanteau words for Hindi-influenced English include: Hindish (recorded from 1972), Hindlish (1985), Henglish (1993) and Hinlish (2013).While the name is based on the Hindi language, it does not refer exclusively to Hindi, but "is used in India, with English words blending...
BTW, there's a Sandbox chatroom where you can experiment with stuff. You can sometimes run into interesting bots that people are testing in there. chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/1/sandbox
@PM2Ring I usually go to meta sites when I want to know how some feature works but it sometimes gets hard because I don't know what to call many of these things.
@JMac Yeah, a while back. I think they understood that it was early in the process of when interviews normally take place, so I don't think a reply was warranted.
I said that like they emailed me an offer and I never replied haha. When we talked in person they said they would love for me to join the lab. I forget what all was said, but I know the idea was that they knew it was still early on
@enumaris Yes, I know
I just got the email from the position I was just talking about today, so I figure I have some time to think things through
@JMac I probably will want to go over and talk to them again just to reaffirm the offer, make sure I fully understand all that I would be doing, etc. just to make sure I still think it is a good fit
