Hey guys!
Could someone help me out with a little conceptual question? It's this: Electric potential difference in a simple circuit gives rise to an electric vector field, which, in turn, 'drives' electric current. But, surely, this electric field is not uniform. So, why is electric current (which is a measure of how fast the charge is moving, I guess) constant throughout the circuit?

16
Q: Why doesn't the electric field inside a wire in a circuit fall off with distance from the battery?

millsmessWe studied electric fields due to point charges. The magnitude of these fields decreases with the square of the distance from the point charge. It seems to me that we could treat the positive terminal of a battery as a point charge. So, I would conclude that the magnitude of the electric field s...

@JohanLiebert Thanks! This had been bugging me for quite a few days!

hello sir :-) @dmckee---ex-moderatorkitten After so long :)

In an effort to provide some kind of continuity for those who asked, I've started a blog just so there is a place to get me on the internet.
8
After all, it would be gauche to just provide a link to the one of the various "replace stack exchange" efforts that I'm currently looking at...
@user8718165 I'm not back in any substantive sense—just leaving a trail of breadcrumbs—but hello to you as well.
For those who might be wondering, it only take about a week for the twitching need to answer questions on the site to fade.

@dmckee---ex-moderatorkitten Hope you are happy and doing well. Really, I never expected to see you leave like that all of a sudden. ::sad::

vzn
6:05 AM
@dmckee---ex-moderatorkitten lol "toddler thermodynamics," hilarious. yeah know the feeling, wish there were "solid" alternatives to most major social media sites eg SE, facebook, reddit, wikipedia etc. user generated content is both very valuable and oft-mistreated at the same time. :(

6:29 AM
@PM2Ring Flipboard, Medium?
How do people expect NLP to work properly without giving the AI eyes and ears so it can make the proper associations and not just play with letters.

6:45 AM
A lot of people probably haven't really thought it through
but in general people seem to lean more toward limiting an AI's power as opposed to giving it access to huge amounts of information about their daily lives

7:37 AM
@DavidZ That limitation is what prevents the AI from working properly. If they really want AI that "understands", they need to supply it with visual and auditory data so when it reads "car", it knows what it actually looks like. It's like putting a new born child in a dark chamber and trying to raise it properly by only giving it text to read.

8:02 AM
morning
That Battelles Rencontres book is a pretty nice book
It was basically a state of the art conference on theoretical physics
it has a lot of introduction of important concepts

1 hour later…
9:03 AM
What are the highlights

It's a very miscellaneous sort of book
Lie groups, PDEs on manifolds, spacetime stuff, cosmology, quantum gravity, Everett interpretation, renormalization, perturbation theory, just random differential geometry presentations

Howdy folks

tips hat
It's on libgen, if you don't want to spend 250 dollaridoos on it
It's a very "mathematicians meet physicists" sort of conference
Bringing us the secrets of homotopy theory and whatnot

Did it help with the GR measurement stuff

No, that was unrelated
But you know what did?
Turns out Mr. Volker Perlick wrote a whole bunch of papers on the topic
Stuff of that nature

10:07 AM
@Slereah When was this conference?

1968
It was the Woodstock of theoretical physics

Ah, I suspected as much. I don't think you can find that sort of topic spread today
which is a bit of a shame, really

Playing Disco Elysium @ACuriousMind?
Or is it just how you look like now

Both

It's been a tough year
I tried playing it yesterday but at some point a bad guy said very mean things to me
and Ijust collapsed
I had been sober for an entire day so I was in no shape to hear such harsh words

10:16 AM
At least you survived getting out of your room, sounds like
It's possible to die from just turning on the lights

10:35 AM
USA or China? Where would you go?

@NovaliumCompany Why not put hell in the list as well
None of these are very enticing choices

@ACuriousMind I almost died from sitting on a particularly uncomfortable chair
But then again, I suppose the protagonist does look like the kind of character who could die from such thing

10:53 AM
Ah, the chair
I had to backtrack and scavenge for healing items to survive that one :P

Get the Mystical Pillow of Comfort

11:09 AM
@Slereah I don't think they are hell.
For living, maybe. But for opportunities, no.

@Slereah The thing about this game is that I'm not even sure if you made that up or not

@ACuriousMind If it does exist, I haven't found it yet
It's kind of a weird setting because I'm still not 100% sure what era it's supposed to be
I'm guessing "basically modern era but alternative history"
Sometimes I think the future, but I don't think there's a single futuristic thing in it?

@Slereah It's the disco era!
(and alternative history/world, yes)

But then where are the flared trousers

11:25 AM
@Slereah People with style don't run around in Martinaise

If you go around long enough you can assemble yourself a pretty snazzy outfit

Who wants to join me on the quest of building superintelligence?

@Slereah I'm afraid I looked horrible until the end because the modifiers I wanted were on the not-snazzy stuff

Where is that "AI revolution" that everyone is talking about? I only see neural nets being applied to everything possible.

I've had a neural net in my head since I was a baby
Nothing amazing
It took years of training it to even recognize a dog
Very poorly optimized

11:34 AM
ha.
How do the neurons in the brain know how to reorganize and reconnect?
(so that it makes sense)

12:00 PM
Reward mechanism
Connections that lead to the good things are reinforced

12:56 PM
thanks for dropping by @dmckee---ex-moderatorkitten with your trail of breadcrumbs :-)
and thank you to whoever pinned that message :P

1:14 PM
The phrases "intuition", "common sense" and "physical meaning" are overrated.

1:30 PM
Indeed they are

1:56 PM
Would appreciate feedback on my most recent answer if anybody has any!

2:55 PM
China > USA

Well I mean, I know you have to say this
So they don't send you to jail

I live in Bulgaria (for now)

They have a long reach!

Guys, I need your advice on something.

@JakeRose I left a comment, but I'm still curious to know how you came to this line of reasoning - Count Iblis in the comments made exactly the same mistake. Coincidence or is there some source making people think the expectation value is a norm?

2:59 PM
My mom has been learning Mandarin Chinese for the past 5 months, literally non-stop, using applications, books... I think I'll try to learn the language in another way. I will surround myself with chineese sounding and reading stuff (e.g Making my google chineese or something like that) What do you think about that?
(subconsciouss learning)

@NovaliumCompany Immersing yourself in a language only works well after you've acquired a basic competency in it - otherwise you have no good starting point. With Mandarin (and other Chinese languages) in particular, you also have the problem that the written language reflects the spoken language in a way very dissimilar to European languages.

yeah :P
Anyways, I'll learn it. I'll find a way.

E.g. I've certainly acquired most of my English vocabulary from just consuming English media, but that wouldn't have worked if someone hadn't taught me some basic words and grammar first.

I'll start with basic words and grammar and then subconscious learning (e.g watching chineese movies, googling chineese words that I don't understand, making my google to chineese...)

Echoing ACM's point above, coming from a background of Indo-European languages, spoken and written Mandarin may as well be two separate languages you have to learn (and that in turn makes each one even harder)

3:33 PM
@ACuriousMind why would you say it isn’t the norm?

What if I come up with a superintelligence AI algorithm and I'm willing to give it to the world only if it gives me Facebook, Apple and Microsoft?
yay

Ah no I see
yep fair wnough
will remove the intuitive part of my answer.

@JakeRose Note that if it were the norm, you could've stopped right there: $\lvert \lvert A\lvert \alpha \rangle \rvert \rvert = 0$ implies $A\lvert \alpha \rangle = 0$ directly.

Q: What is the fastest moving macroscopic object people have made?

Colin McLartyThe Parker Solar Probe will move at 690,000 km/h (430,000 mph), or 0.064% the speed of light, at its closest approaches to the sun. Parker Solar Probe top speed Will that be the highest speed yet achieved by a manufactured, visible-size object? If not, what is? I have tagged this question a...

Does this qualify as big list type question?

@JohanLiebert It qualifies as "not about physics".

3:48 PM
Also that question is answered in the Guinness book of world records

Hello, Hello , Hello . Is anybody in there?

@JakeRose Your edit left the first sentence dangling (it talks about the intuitive view that's no longer there) and you have a stray square - your equation should be $a_n\lvert \lvert \langle \alpha \vert a_n\rangle\rvert\rvert^2 = 0$.
Furthermore, you assume that $A$ is diagonalizable. OP didn't really constrain $A$ to be that.

4:08 PM
@Knight Why did that happen to you, the suspension?

user434058
@ACuriousMind The no. of upvotes kinda put me off from flagging it....

@FakeMod See the meta post.

@FakeMod Many people upvote questions they find interesting. But what they find interesting and what is on-topic for our site need not align.

user434058
@Knight I just saw that after asking you...... I don't know what to say

user434058
@ACuriousMind Noted!

4:17 PM
@FakeMod How'd ya doing brother?

user434058
@Knight Stay well!

user434058
@Knight Good! Just created the account to ask a question which i asked and suddenly knew the answer for so deleted it.

user434058
Now I have also requested for this account's deletion

@FakeMod What?

user434058
@Knight Yeah I was simultaneously searching for it on the internet, and got an answer .... So deleted the question

4:19 PM
Okay

user434058
I might drop in occassionally creating new temporary accounts to just ask a single question and delete them afterwards....

user434058
@ACuriousMind Is what I am doing okay/acceptable?? Don't ban me for it!

@FakeMod I think you're doing a little wrong.

@FakeMod As long as you don't do anything you couldn't do with a single permanent account, it's not forbidden

@Knight were you sockpuppeting?

4:24 PM
@JohanLiebert I'm ready for all kinds of interrogation .

@Knight I am not interrogating but I just wanted to say that you can have multiple account but the only thing that you need to take care is that you don't upvote your own post, etc. If you think this is a false accusation then you can contact community managers.

@JohanLiebert I contacted them but as you know we don't ever get any reply.

If you intend to continue this conversation, please continue it elsewhere. The h bar is not the place for discussing individual suspensions.

user434058
@ACuriousMind Oh I only have one account at a time... So no problem, i suppose

The "info" says "General Chat". Please define "general" so as to contain all the possible cases.

4:31 PM
@Knight It is also not the place for disingenuous questions. I've asked you nicely, I will not ask again.

I'm ready for all kinds of atrocity.

@FakeMod I wonder why you're doing this, though - why not keep the accounts. Is it easier for you not to spend so much time on the site if you don't have a permanent account?

@Knight if you wish we can continue this in general chat or FB. Where do you wish?

@JohanLiebert Okay.

user434058
@ACuriousMind Yes! It is :) ! I only create accounts for a day or two. When I am account-less, I don't have even the tiniest desire to visit the site (good for me). Moreover, I always get the association bonus whenever I create a new account, so I can upvote and participate in chat (if needed). I know this is as dumb as it could be, but it is the best of both the worlds. I can have an account(=addiction) according to my wishes :)

4:39 PM
@FakeMod I would suggest you not to upvote/downvote because your votes aren't locked and as soon as your account is deleted simultaneously your votes disappear too.

Yeah, the votes will not be permanent on these accounts either, that's right.

user434058
@JohanLiebert Yeah, but it doesn't even harm to vote.

Well, you may confuse the recipients of the votes with the 'user was removed' rep loss messages :P

@FakeMod and they may get sad too!

user434058
@JohanLiebert That's a good reason, I agree!!

user434058
4:41 PM
But the user removed notice alleviates the pain, at least for me :)

user434058
@ACuriousMind That's awesome!!!! You have given a reason to me to vote :P

4:57 PM
@FakeMod As a friend I want to know that do you want to curb that addiction ? Or you want to keep this addiction but controlling only upto JEE. Addiction should be controlled, addiction is a latin word whose meaning is "become a slave"

Q: Rare earth magnet is launched through the loop of copper wire. How long does it take to travel through it?

MaaliruiskuTo calculate the induced voltage of moving magnet through coil, it is essential to know how fast the magnet travels through it. Let’s assume a magnet is launched from outside through the coil. How do you calculate, how much the magnet loses velocity (assuming no friction and no air resistance)? ...

@Knight addicere means nothing of the sort.
addictio itself means "award", and the English meaning stems from the rewarding feeling addicts have when they follow their compulsion.

user434058
5:12 PM
@Knight I am not sure whether I will contribute after JEE or not, but most probably I will. However that doesn't matter right now :) Who knows what I have in store for me....

user434058
I get a passionate about the stuff I like and thus it is easy to get addicted. In a sense, I am vulnerable when it comes to the stuff that I like.

user434058
@Knight Also I will, hopefully * :P * , be learning (out of my interest) higher physics and mathematics while studying engineering (after JEE), so I might want some people to help me out while self-studying, and PSE seems the best place for this :)

@ACuriousMind My source of information about the word "addiction" was this

Hmm, the full etymology is apparently much more complicated than a single meaning: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/16066359.2018.1543412

my favorite example of a word no one really knows the origin of is "strawberry"
see for instance this oxford university press blog: blog.oup.com/2015/04/strawberry-word-origin-etymology

ACM, yes I agree.

@Semiclassical English seems to have a penchant for bizarre fruit names of uncertain origin, see also: pineapple :P

though when it comes to examples of words with unexpected origins, I like the fact that "passion" and "patient" both derive from the latin verb pati

A: Molecule vs Crystal

Ashleyno entiendo nada de lo que habeis puesto, se supone que es la diferencia entre molécula y cristal, no las definiciones de estas o la diferencia de líquido y fluido o que si el H2O es noseque.... Google Translates this post as: I do not understand anything that you have put, it is assumed that...

I have added the translation of this post there (actually from translation it looks like a comment). What is the most appropriate thing to do. (i.e., if the post isn't in English)

translating it or flagging it for deletion are really the only two options, aside from leaving a comment for the poster that all posts are expected to be in English here

Mark WaliamsFind out the best and quality internet packages and subscribe to one of them according to your need and enjoy with your friends and family members. https://thepackageshub.com/ufone-net-packages/

Do spams come this often to our site or is it a recent trend?

@ACuriousMind If it doesn't make sense to you, that doesn't mean it doesn't have a sense.

@JohanLiebert "Often" compared to SO? No. "Often" compared to how often you've noticed it so far? Almost certainly yes.

@ACuriousMind One thing that I have noticed from these spammers' profile is that they almost always have their account on SO. I think they get directed towards here through HNQ?

I'm afraid the inner lives of spammers are a mystery to me. They almost certainly have accounts on SO though because it's the most lucrative target as it has the highest traffic.

Do we too have the "Charcoal" thing which detects spam post. I have seen it on mother meta.

6:58 PM
@JohanLiebert Yes, Smokey is active across the network. Here's its recent true positive list for physics

@ZeroTheHero Nice! I love funky blues. And that blues harp player is excellent too. I've been an amateur blues player since the mid 1970s. I'm starting to get arthritis in my hands, so I rarely play guitar these days. But I can still do some nice stuff on blues harp, maybe not quite as good as that guy playing with Robben, though. ;)
@ZeroTheHero Here's a blues-rock tune, originally by Traffic, that you may enjoy. Davy Knowles is from the Isle of Mann, Matthew Curry is from the USA. They are both excellent guitarists, but I think Davy has the edge.
