Yay, somebody solved the Strange Summation one
And the Ailing Assassin one, too :)

Avi
1:45 AM
S + Steamed sounds like esteemed
but unfortunately not sure how to make a rebus out of it

2:05 AM
@GarethMcCaughan Archipelego and balasz were the same person.
He told me a few days ago.
It’s pretty wild how much the score on his girls name question has varied. It’s been as high as +19 and now it’s at +7

2:48 AM
@Avi Without the additional hint, there was absolutely no way to know to turn numbers around: it was a "guess what I'm thinking" puzzle and there was no reason one of the answers (I'm thinking specifically of mine) was worse than the one you intended.
Unless there's something I'm missing.

@Avi archipelego and balasz are the same person and he deleted both accounts.

Avi
@msh210 You’re right :(
Looks like the only good puzzle was the Ailing Assassin one
Mistake unit for puzzle? (8)

3:57 AM
@Avi this wouldn't happen to be an indirect anagram, would it?

Avi
No-no + gram = NONOGRAM
nope :)
wait, I screwed up
wait, did I?
not sure if "Puzzle" is an acceptable def
actually, it probably is - drink is acceptable for ALE, after all

Q: Is full crosswords allowed here?

Ankit SharmaI am new here and came across this question, I felt it fall on the category of "too broad" of otehr sites. Am I right to this conclusion or it's allowed here?

3 hours later…
9:34 AM
@jafe That's the king-making Earl of WARWICK = (A + R) in W.WI + C(ounty) (cor)K

that's correct

CCCC: Retired hack was hit in two different places for cover-up (9)

just realized i used "resistance" in the c4 here, the c4 in OK's room, and in this friday's crossword... need to come up with some new material (head shake)

I haven't looked at your (alledgedly too broad!) crossword yet abd I don't know what you posted in OK's room, but here "Resistance" fits the surface better than Romeo would ...

could have maybe tried to put another "king" there somehow

10:05 AM
@jafe Where do you have crosswords published?

"Elves, Hobbits and Dwarves" is one.

just here :)

Oh, I see. Sorry, I'm not active on PSE: I didn't realize you publish a crossword weekly

1 hour later…
11:15 AM
Those contradictions I got while trying to solve Avi's nonogram? They were because some of the numbers were off the edge of my screen :-).

12:03 PM
@GarethMcCaughan Archipelego just claimed someone else deleted his username.
Is that even possible? Or is he just trying to get attention and sympathy?

12:16 PM
Sometimes moderators will delete users when there is sockpuppet abuse (or other abuse, but that's the sort that most often leads to deletions) going on. I will, for obvious reasons, not comment on whether we have done that in this case or why.

@ThomasMarkov There are some interesting SE meta posts about sockpuppetry (e.g. here and here) - worth a read, although nobody will post about how it is detected, since that would enable people to beat the system and thus defeat the whole point of the detection mechanisms :)

Gotcha. Well Archipelego told me he was also balasz.com. So yeah.

12:38 PM
@ThomasMarkov Nothing wrong with having two accounts, as long as they don't both vote on the same thing (or similar duplicative activities) or for one another.

yeah, you occasionally come up with posts on other SE sites where it's perfectly reasonable to post with an alternate account
like if you'r asking "how to tell my employer that X" it kind of defeats the purpose if your employer knows your SE account and can find out X from your post
harder to come up with a legitimate example on puzzling though

Whaddaya think of "X Y jumped" to mean X with Y removed, in a CC?
Like: Rap by "Sets Muddled": "The cow jumped over the moon" (4)
(Personally I don't think it's good but I'm willing to be convinced. :-) )
@jafe People might have all sorts of reasons that might seem weird or insufficient to you and me. But as long as they're not doing anything wrong with the accounts, no problem. Oh, I shoulda mentioned, another big no-no for a duplicate account (besides what I said, voting vel sim.) is ban evasion: using another account while one is suspended, question-banned, or the like.

1:02 PM
yeah

By the way, you say it's not pronounced like "café" or "safe" (not that I woulda guessed the latter). So how is it pronounced?

rhymes with taffy/daffy
at least that's how i say it in english... in finnish it's more like ['jɑfe]

ah
so pretty close to café, but with initial stress

yeah

@jafe Finally it becomes clear! I've been going with a soft J and 'YAR-FAY' for ages...! :)

1:14 PM
With ultimate stress, it'd mean "handsome" or "nice" in Hebrew. Fwiw.

cool :P

Gtg. GAmen

Avi
1:57 PM
@GarethMcCaughan Oh no!

Yeah, the puzzle was clearly "too broad".

Avi
XD
OH
PUZZLE IDEA
awh
was going to make a rebus with a wiiiide 2
and etc. for all the other close reasons
unfortunately, with the new set of close reasons, the puzzle won't be future-proof
not to mention, I'm not familiar with the new sets of close reasons

Avi
2:17 PM
Hmmm, found this by googling "rebus"
so far I see:
"Backing up"
"No one to blame"
"Right between the eyes"
"Jack in the box"
"Down payment"

quarterback

Avi

Avi
@jafe sounds about right

Avi
sleeping periodically?

identical twins

Avi
I think that's all of them :)

Bedroom, because there's room between the letters?

Avi
yeahhhh
much better

2:27 PM
The way/weigh/whey one could also be three-way something.

Avi
in any case, it's probably better for me to think of original rebuses

"sleeping periodically"? Is that a thing? "sleeping period" seems more likely but that doesn't seem very satisfactory either.

Avi
sleeping period is probably it

Sleeping pill, if "pill" were a name for something small and round like a dot.

Avi
that sounds better, but not sure if it fits better

2:32 PM
The thing after the "sleeping" is not easy to discern. It looks like a dot, but could also be a comma.

Avi
Is "on college, ist" a valid rebus for "oncologist"?
or "on college is t"
I think the first would be more valid than the second if going for a sound-based rebus

I see you've decided to let sleeping dots lie.

Q: Elevator probability

NiranchanThere are 10 floors and there are 8 elevators. What it is the probability that all the elevators will arrive at the same time in floor number 4. Assume all the elevators are randomly moving and they can move up or down and they take equal time between floors.

1 hour later…
4:03 PM
No two ways about it.
for the way weigh whey clue

Avi
Nice! That fits perfectly
I think the B E D one could also be Bedspread

theres a preacher i watch from time to time who says no two ways about it all the time.
i think youre right in the bed one
which ones are we still missing?
did we get "Sleeping."
the dot on sleeping may just be a stray mark from scanning a page. Theres on in the twins box as well.

4:28 PM
"Bedspread" sounds good. I don't buy "no two ways about it".
(Not because it isn't a standard phrase -- it certainly is -- but because I don't see how you get from three things pronounced like "way" to that. Just because 2 and 3 are different numbers? Seems very weak.)

that's not a dot next to the "sleeping", looks more like a small L

Q: Unusual series of events

user63710If you are alert, you might clearly see an object in your imagination when you read the sentence: "It lasted only from CTScan to Face Palm." What is the object?

@GarethMcCaughan
this guy is pretty salty.

Avi
The question has an open bounty and cannot be closed, according to the error message when I try to flag it

I've deleted Archipelago's answer that was just complaining that we didn't delete all his questions.
(Because it's not an answer.)

I deleted the other such (non)answer and told them to go to our Meta or bug the CMs if they want to take issue with how moderation has affected them or their post(s).

4:40 PM
i dont get why he doesnt just stick to balasz.com
he did tell me he was mad balasz kept getting downvoted and the archipelego account puzzles were getting upvoted

Some of the ones he posted as Archipelago were less obviously bad than most of the ones he posted as balazs.com.

tbh im a little salty we'll never know what her name was or see her bosoms.

Also, after a while of posting puzzles that seem probably-bad everyone is liable to go "oh no not again" and downvote rather than giving the benefit of the doubt. Not so much for a new account whose questions might turn out to be good.

@Avi Considering the font in the rebus, I wonder if it's intended to be "Sleeping Beauty"?

i guess that makes sense

4:43 PM
@jafe In which case I'd say that one is "sleeping at the wheel" as in WEE (little) + L...

@ThomasMarkov I am informed that there are a number of places on the internet where one can go to see bosoms.

oh snap, Ive solved part of the clue
the 25 reefs are the 25 solid answers that were already given, the chameleon is arch/balasz
so you cant close a question with a bounty?

@Stiv Or "sleeping with one eye (i) [open]"?

I suspect some had a reasonable intended answer but that is unfortunately a very different thing from having a reasonable intended solution path. These feel way too much like “guess what I’m thinking”, and “oh here’s some hints that, if you know the answer, are clearly valid” - but none of that helps a solver find a path toward that solution, so you either happen upon an answer and a realization that it works, or you don’t. I dislike things solved by recognition, not by solving clues.

he ansered it again

4:49 PM
Yeah that’s definitely not ok.

he did it again
is there anything you guys are able to do about this besides continually deleting his posts?
grinding out my "deputy" badge lol

@ThomasMarkov Thanks for keeping an eye on this. The issue has been dealt with, at least for the time-being.

Avi
I believe the major problem was

now im watching for balasz.com to pop up in the feed.

Avi
not having clear solutions, and not having clear hints
like, even if there is lateral thinking in a problem
as time goes on, the hints should become less and less lateral
from lateralization to literalization :o

5:04 PM
i think the last hint on the girls name riddle was pretty explicit, I just couldnt figure it out.
of course, it could have been just more hand-waving and abstraction.

Avi
big REEEEE
my nonogram is nonosolvable

*Insert comment about required “hints” not being hints here*

Avi
which I kind of expected with monocolor, but 4 hints isn't enough to force a unique solution :(
Hint: This is not a hint.
^How I feel most cryptic hints end up going
Next hint: That was a hint.

@GarethMcCaughan did you see the hint I added to my cipher yesterday? Wanted to be sure youd seen it before I added more.

Avi
hmmmmm

5:09 PM
Yes, I saw that. I have given it maybe 10 minutes of thought and not yet figured out exactly what's going on, though it certainly seems like there ought to be enough information now :-).

Avi
how would you make a nonogram on a torus

Avi
or tori, consumptively
what's up mr markov

make the nonogram as usual, but then have it so that the image needs to shifted up or down so many rows to make it make sense.

I think it was entirely deliberate that balazs.com didn't give useful hints. There is (was? haven't checked) some blurb on their profile page saying something like "people here are too used to things that are exercises rather than real puzzles, so I'm posting puzzles that don't make it clear from the outset what you have to do to solve them".

Avi
5:10 PM
wow

The trouble is that "guess what random things were in my head when I wrote this" doesn't tend to make a good puzzle, and it's not clear that any of their puzzles were anything better than that.

"There is a drawback posting these puzzles on a forum where the majority of users actually prefer doing exercises. That means they know what the exact method of solving is, or they feel they have at least a framework of a plan at the beginning. Regarding my problems however, they will find themselves in a situation that is unusual and uncomfortable to them."
the only unusual and uncomfortable situation was him spamming

Avi
the interesting thing about puzzles is the aha moment
the hard thing about crafting puzzles is getting people to the aha moment without banging their head straight through the desk
4

Did that mkae sense Avi? then your nonogram would be topologically a torus, and would just need to be "rotated" to reveal the image.

Avi
I was thinking
a numerical nonogram
where you place numbers as such
i.e. interpreted on one rotation, there are numbers placed as per the top and left sides
interpreted on another rotation, the same holds true
where "is there a number" is the filled square concept
and choosing the numbers is the hard part
but honestly, that sounds more like "make the puzzle for me" than an actual puzzle
needs more precision to not become busywork

5:14 PM
a metapuzzle

Avi
a metapuzzle is like

i had an idea earlier for a "guess the riddle" puzzle where the riddle is several potential solutions and you have to figure out what was asked

Avi
sounds more like a [situation] puzzle
there was this one bottle
where if you pour too much wine into it
it starts leaking out the bottom
what was it called?
more like a cup, honestly
Oh, derp! The nonogram wasn't machine solvable, but some simple human elimination tactics make quick work of it

If it's human-solvable but not machine-solvable then you need to improve your machine.

Avi
well i'm just using a dinky donkey online solver
I can't be bothered to write a solver myself

5:24 PM
And if your machine is employing human-elimination tactics, then you need to shut it down fast.

Avi
ba dum... tss

Avi
5:37 PM
hmm, used a different machine and it solved it lickety split
rip
in any case the important part is the rebus

Avi
5:48 PM
does anybody know a word that means "switch" that starts with O?
as in, An Organic (switch) of Occupation
maybe an Organic Overhaul of Occupation?

overturn?

Avi
I don't believe overturn has the connotation of refresh?
it's more like abolish imo

Avi
6:10 PM
is it "a surplus of funds" or "surplus funds"?
looks like the latter

6:40 PM
I think you can say both, but the former has the possible meaning of "many funds, more of them than are required" as opposed to "lots of money, more than is required" and I don't think the latter does.
(It could with carefully constructed context, but normally it wouldn't.)

Avi
ah, funds as in money market fund or something of that ilk

Avi
7:25 PM
reeeeeee
I'm 10x salty
why could a machine figure this out
and I can't?
only 66 squares to go x.x

Q: A Box of Puzzle Blocks

TSLFA cubical box is required to contain a set of wooden blocks (right parallelepiped solids) that have different edges and colors. No two blocks has the same dimensional measurement. All blocks have unique dimensions (integer units),thus no square faces. What is the smallest box's inside dimensions?

8:24 PM
is using logarithms worthy of a "mathematics" tag?
well, I hope not

How are you "using" them?

Avi
conversion of bases

But that's only part of a bigger puzzle, eg a decryption of some sort?

yes

balazs com! This is my question, so either give me access to it or close it. Sending the same message "don't create sockpuppet accounts" doesn't achieve anything.

Avi
aha

ive already gotten 4-5 helpful flags toward the deputy badge from him today
i wonder if anyone called the phone number on that riddle

Avi
9:10 PM
xD
amazing that he somehow expected people to make the leap from "lj36" to Lyndon B. Johnson

i just sent an email asking what kind of help he needs
maybe thats the riddle

Avi
and then each part of the sentence is probably its own thing

email kicked back nonexistent
though that being the solution would have been more straightforward than whatever it actually is

Avi
and all together there's probably some random connection that nobody ever would have thought of except balazs.com
he identified that lj36 was lyndon b johnson
but it's not the whole puzzle

I bet Archipelego could solve it

lol
maybe you should try base conversion first

@GarethMcCaughan I think the main chunk of the puzzle lies in figuring out the rebus, so keep at it! :)

Avi
indeed

I also feel that the rebus is where the tricksiness lies, which is why I didn't post the nonogram solution :-).

Avi
I appreciate that the nonogram is posted
so that the people who have difficulty in solving the nonogram
can at least attempt the rebus

Yeah, been on and off all day.

I feel like this is a convoluted advertisement for their website

@Avi Ah, yeah, examples have to be clued as such. drink is not acceptable for ale, really... so it would be have to be "puzzle, for example" or "puzzle, for one" etc.

I’d find it hard to believe it’s related to the nanotechnology website.

11:06 PM
Yeah. Then again the behaviour is baffling

HTM
@ThomasMarkov I get redirected to a boxing website

@GarethMcCaughan ^^^ (yeah he's still doing it )

@HTM Really? Last time I checked it was also a nanotech site
This is strange

it depends on if you spell it balasz or balazs

Hmm, I work for a company that would potentially use their tech, maybe I’ll call them and tell them someone is slandering their name

11:18 PM
I think Balazs is a common Hungarian name. zs and sz are at least as different as, say, s and z in English.

@Avi I think I’m close in your rebus, haven’t gotten something that satisfies me yet.
Aight, Avis rebus has led me to a cosmetics store in Portugal...no way that’s it right?
