My perspective on "whether or not": english.stackexchange.com/a/73227/17084
I'd love to hear other people's opinions on this.

2:35 AM
Anybody alive?

I think I disagree with your answer. Let me read it again, just to be sure.
Yeah, it's a good answer, up until the last sentence. I find I don't care whether or not anyone joins me ... to be perfectly correct.

2:54 AM
@timothymh Billions of people!

Has anyone else noticed that after a few days have passed, the comments under an answer sometimes appear in a different order from the order in which they were posted?
I have a comment, under someone's answer, that's actually a reply to a comment that appears two places BELOW it.

@DavidWallace It should be "I don't care whether anyone joins me;" the "or not" is completely unnecessary. Not that it's incorrect, just "less correct", as I said.

@DavidWallace Link?

@Mahnax Nice.

@Mahnax No.

3:00 AM
@DavidWallace Uh… why not?

@timothymh I find "correct" to be a binary condition. It's either correct or it isn't - there's no "less correct". And in this case, it's correct.
That's not to say that I don't understand your point of view; of course I do. I just happen not to agree with you.

@DavidWallace I have an idea as to why that might occur, but I can't confirm it if I don't have an example to look at. Is there any reason why you won't link to it?

@Mahnax I just thought someone might know why it would occur. That's OK. It's not terribly important.

Well, if something gets enough comments, then some of them are hidden; the highest-voted comments will be certain to appear, and the ones related to those might also appear. Just a guess.

Nah. Both my comment and the earlier one appear, without my needing to click the "more comments" link. The earlier one just appears after mine.

3:12 AM
Does yours have more upvotes?

No. All three have the same number.

Huh, interesting.
tosses awful theories out the window

It's just a caveat, I suppose, against holding dialogues within comments. Like sometimes they end up not making sense.
I just upvoted the comment that was in between mine and its predecessor, just as an experiment; and it didn't affect the order.

I see.

Hey, happy Canada Day.

3:22 AM
Yes, to you as well.

For me, it has already passed.
But I never knew it existed until yesterday.

Hello.

Hi doggy.

I wish you a great Canaday as well!

Hi Cerby.
So what did you do to inspire such a magnificent work of art?

3:27 AM
Hello, which work of art is this?

The Hibiscus of the Linnaea.

Ohh.
Yeah that is very nice. No idea.

Well, very sweet. Whatever the reason.

Yeah.

Well, I'm off, bye.

3:31 AM
Bye.

Bye!
So what's this penthouse room about?

M&M were posting some pictures of penthouses there earlier.
Mahnax and Meysam.

You mean, top-floor flats? Or the magazine?

The former, of course.
Though I must admit I thought of the latter first.

3:40 AM
Yeah, otherwise I would have suggested you replace "of" with "from".
But boys will be boys, so anything's possible.

@DavidWallace Oh, haha, so that was the only thing that concerned you...
@DavidWallace But these boys are so well behaved!
It's bed time.
Not for you, probably.
Bye!

No, not for me. Sleep well though.
Bye.

Ciao!

4:00 AM
Huh, I opened this chat window, but then watched a movie on youtube and didn't notice that people were chatting here

4:23 AM
@DavidWallace As outlined in other answers as well as mine, "whether" introducing a binary option stands perfectly well on its own—"or not" isn't needed. I'm finding it hard to express the difference without the ability to use vocal inflection.
(I've just posted a comment which may make it clearer...)

Nice catch, Jasper.

user19161
@Mahnax As always, Matt.

user19161
I remember this one because Daniel answered it.

user19161
I also think we have been downvoting too many duplicates. Firstly, the duplicate may not be searchable. Secondly, even if it is, I think we should vote based on the quality of the question itself, not whether it is duplicate. Sure, one can always close it or delete it.

5:26 AM
> This question does not show any research effort
One moment.
If they had bothered to search at all, they would have found it.
Also, if the title had been more specific, it would have popped up as a similar question.

user19161
@Mahnax Depends on how the search is done.

user19161
@Mahnax Sure you are a free man.

If they had bothered to Google search, they would have easily found the answer.
IMO, that demonstrates a complete lack of research.

user19161
@Mahnax In any case, I am glad my comments got two upvotes.

5:33 AM
@JasperLoy Of course.

user19161
@Mahnax By the way, that comment was autogenerated and disappears when the question is closed.

@JasperLoy I know.

6:10 AM
Hi @Gigi!

Hey @Mahnax.

@Gigili Are you still in Canada?

Nope.

Did you enjoy your trip?

A lot.
You were extremely busy all the time! How was the Canada Day or whatever it's called?

6:18 AM
Ah, it was just a day of work.

I thought Sundays were a day of rest?

@DavidWallace Umm, not for Mahnax.

Right. People want fast food, every day of the week.

He refused to meet me there, which is really something.
How are you today @David?

Mahnax did that? Gee, that is something!

6:21 AM
@Gigili I refused? I was busy!

@Gigili Umm, much as I was last time we spoke.
but thank you for asking.

@Mahnax You refused because you were busy is what I said.

@Gigili Oh, alright.

You're back home now, I take it?

@DavidWallace Umm, anything I can do?
I am, yes.

6:23 AM
@Gigili Could you make me chicken soup?
Or bring me grapes?

@DavidWallace Are you sick?

@Mahnax I didn't go to work today.
@Gigili Are you feeling rested? Or are you suffering from jetlag?

@DavidWallace Aww.

@DavidWallace Umm, hum? Sure!
@DavidWallace Both?

@Gigili Gee; you're so nice!

user19161
6:40 AM
@KitFox Happy birthday!

user19161
@Gigili Contradiction.

user19161
8:13 AM
@david I see you answered many questions today.

user19161
8:25 AM
@Gigili Now I can't find out how the meeting went because it did not exist.

@JasperLoy Huh?

mfadelWhich is correct? better from these sentences: I listen, go,read and learn from experts, or I listen to, go with, read and learn from experts I talk here about propositions (to, with, from) related to the word "experts", what is the best use?

Q: If I write two phrasal verbs with difference prepositions consecutively, can I omit the first preposition?

David Give or take away something from someone. The problem in this sentence is that normally one would say "Give to" or "take away from" someone, but what should I write when I want to refer to both alternatives?

user19161
9:33 AM
@DavidWallace 45 is small.

user19161
@RegDwightΒВB Done.

@JasperLoy Yeah, I know. But in proportion to the intelligence needed to produce the answer, it seems huge.

@DavidWallace that one will have to get closed. It's a dupe of a dupe of a dupe of a dupe.

user19161
@RegDwightΒВB And they are all somewhere on the site I know.

The answer getting three upvotes is no surprise. But the question?

user19161
9:43 AM
Oh I remember you gave Kit a birthday present last year @reg.

@JasperLoy Interesting, what was it?

You transitively pissed someone? That's an achievement. Also, a federal offence.

user19161
@Gigili It has something to do with "gigili".

user19161
@RegDwightΒВB Haha, maybe you will know who I am referring to, shh...

user19161
10:12 AM
@reg I see you have been promoting ELL in the comments.

Aye.
We need to get more actual pineapples to support that site.

user19161
Hmm, I don't think I'll join that site.

You're one yourself, feel free to support it.

user19161
What I would like if I owned SE is for all GR questions to be allowed.

@Gigili I proposed it, duh. It had my support from the very first second.
@JasperLoy Some of your answers might get migrated. That site will have a Jasper Loy.

user19161
10:15 AM
@Gigili Well, like I said I don't consider myself a pineapple but I know others do. You really need to live in my country to know that English is the main language.

user19161
@RegDwightΒВB What will happen to the rep here and there? Minus rep here and plus rep there?

@RegDwightΒВB Would you go through all questions and answers again to decide if they should get migrated?
@JasperLoy I meant Reg.

user19161
@Gigili But to add, many people speak English so badly that Americans won't understand them. But half of those can speak proper English as well.

@JasperLoy sure.
@Gigili it depends. Really old stuff is usually not migrated, but there have been exceptions. I remember us getting three-year old questions from SO.

user19161
@RegDwightΒВB Hmm, then I think I will join it then. Damn!

user19161
10:24 AM
Oh dear, the migration might be so huge that I will lose my 20k here!

@JasperLoy It's still a long, loooong way to go.

user19161
@RegDwightΒВB Yeah, I might be dead by then.

You should propose BlackHumor.SE.

11:12 AM
@JasperLoy That must have been painful!
@JasperLoy My memory of Singapore differs. I'm sure I heard more Mandarin than English while I was there.

@DavidWallace Because of a kidney stone blocking the urine flow?

Hey, am I the only person who is against the ELL proposal? I don't see what possible purpose it would serve, other than keeping Reg's feathers a little less ruffled.

11:50 AM
@DavidWallace I thought I was the one.
Or the only one.
Or whatever.

user19161
@DavidWallace Actually now that I think about it, I agree with you too.

user19161
What kinds of questions would really be on-topic there? There will still be a general reference for questions to be closed.

user19161
So I propose the nuking of ELL. QED.

user19161

Oh, happy birthday, KitFox!

@DavidWallace the idea is to accommodate all valid and interesting questions that are still too basic for a site for "linguists, etymologists, and serious English enthusiasts".

Thanks.

user19161
@former Now you have to remove that too? :-)

12:23 PM
Oh ja, alles gute zum Geburstag.

user19161
@RegDwightΒВB accommodate

@RegDwightΒВB Danke.

user19161
@RegDwightΒВB That sounds like Arabic somehow. Maybe I have been in the Islam room too much.

@JasperLoy You need to stay out of there!

user19161
@DavidWallace Yeah I pissed some people there too.

12:25 PM
and I need to go to bed. Good night all.

Good night.

The thing is, all other language sites are fundamentally different from ELU. Translations are on-topic. Painfully basic questions are on-topic. Etc. There is no equivalent for GLU, RLU, JLU for English.

user19161
@RegDwightΒВB Then would everything be on-topic for that site?

No. Only everything that is on-topic on those other sites.

user19161
Put in another way what is off-topic there?

12:26 PM
Asking for egg-salad sandwich recipes would still be off-topic, sorry.

user19161
I like my a the better best answer. I think it should be upvoted.

Hey, happy birthday Kit. smooch

user19161
@Gigili Smooch actually has many meanings.

@JasperLoy I meant the best one.

12:31 PM
@JasperLoy Name three.

1. smooch
2. ...
3. profit

user19161
@Robusto I will give you four. Kiss or dance as verb or noun.

Schwach.
@JasperLoy buzzer
Anyway, nobody uses "smooch" to mean "dance" these days.
Nobody except pineapples.

Pineapples do not dance.

user19161
They do in the fruit advertisements.

12:39 PM

You call that fruit?

IAfanasovI'm learning English grammar with the book by Raymond Murphy: "English Grammar in Use [3rd Edition]". Someone put that on the list for ELL.

user19161
@RegDwightΒВB Geezis.

12:47 PM
@JasperLoy what?
I thought you saw no point in having a second site?

user19161
@RegDwightΒВB But yes, that can confuse pineapples.

There are many, many things that can confuse pinapples. Legitimately.
Whether to use "give me a chair" vs. "give me the chair" is a very important question. Thousands of people are having it this very second. I don't see a point in not providing an SE venue for such questions.
But this site that venue is not.

@RegDwightΒВB Let's not forget the ever popular "Give me a chair" vs. "Give me an chair."

@Robusto well I left out the ever-so-popular "give me an chair" vs. "give me chair".

user19161
@Robusto That one is for ELC. English Language for Children.

12:52 PM

user19161
Hey @cpx, has your copy of CGE arrived?

1:43 PM
@KitFox just over 8 hours of cycling. I went the wrong way for a mile, but my friends flagged down a car to catch me up and tell me. I forgot my cycling shoes, so I had to go with my slip-ons that I drive in. they only slipped off once. Over all we had a good ride. We might even consider doing it again.

Hah. Forgetting the cycling shoes. Wouldn't happen to me.
Just mount LOOK pedals and be done.

Indeed! Can you even cycle with those talons?

Being one with your bicycle is a huge advantage.

seems like you'd still need shoes...

That is not the point.
The point of this conversation (check the transcript) is that you'd need shoes that would be impossible to forget.

1:49 PM
well, if forgetting shoes is my problem I'm sure it is
@RegDwightΒВB and since pedals aren't shoes I would still have forgotten them

But then you wouldn't be able to cycle.
That would've taught you.

lol
I see

Cycling 100 km in your Homer Simpson slippers won't teach you shit.
If anything, it will teach you the opposite of what's good.
Next time you'll probably forget your bike. Who needs a bike? You've got the slippers, you can walk!

make do and mend, that's what I say!
@RegDwightΒВB luckily I cycled down to the van rental place and put the bicycle in the van at the earliest opportunity.

See, you had to cycle there.
That's the weakest link.
One day you will walk there, only to wonder how come you have nothing to put in the van but slippers.

1:54 PM
:D one day. But not last Friday.

There are very many more days than last Fridays.
Your chances are not improving.

my chances of remembering my bicycle last Friday are 100%
quantum mechanics not withstanding

And I am sure you will appreciate being reminded of that the day you stand in a middle of some bog with no bike and no shoes.

I'll have shoes!
I've never forgotten to wear shoes out of my flat

2:10 PM
@RegDwightΒВB Hey, he's English, not Irish.

@RegDwightΒВB It won't teach you shit, but it will teach you to shit.

In the words of a great Irish singer, thanks for the information.
