Q: Great resources for making and keeping friends and why?

PoidahKeeping and making friends especially when you are older is difficult. I am really keen to hear about great resources - courses, sites, youtube channels that you have found personally helpful. However, what is probably more helpful is specific reasons why and how has that resource helped you? ...

Morning everyone!

@scohe001 Oh no, this I know :p what I meant is that the reported "comment" was actually an answer to the question, but I guess it's just that the commenter simply deleted their comment and posted it as an answer instead.

@avazula Morning!

6:04 AM
@AJ how is it going today?

A J
@avazula Good. Sitting empty at work since two days.
how about you?

@AJ nothing left to do?
Lots of work, but the mood is good. I really love my new job, and yesterday I had enough energy and motivation to depth clean my kitchen. I'm much less stressed now :p

A J
@avazula I have to fix bugs in production as they come, but since there is none, I have nothing to do. I am reading news rn.

@AJ does it feel good to be able to unwind a little?

A J
yes, it does.
I also went on a picnic with whole family on Sunday as the weather was pretty pleasant.

6:20 AM
that is nice
temperatures have decreased here... it's raining today. Such a relief

A J
so is here

7:13 AM
:)

7:48 AM
It's quiet in here lately. How many people are enjoying summer vacations? :)

8:01 AM
@Tinkeringbell vacation’s over. Back to classes and internship interview preparation now.

Oof! Mine still has to start :) Next week, yay!

going for a short trip too next week :P
o/

8:21 AM
Cool, where are you going to?

@Tinkeringbell heading to Albufeira, Algarve, not too fancy :p
I live in Portugal anyways so i'm not gonna exit the country :)
3h train time

Sounds nice!

yeah :D

8:43 AM
I need to do some tests. The environment where I usually do them is broken. I can do them in prod. This sounds like a terrible idea... (But I have been waiting for this environment for the last 45 minutes, so I might do them in prod and try to not do an action I shouldn't have done...)

I just had the tester complain my code wasn't working, turns out his test was wrong. Always a nice feeling of satisfaction ;)
Now I hope he'll do a test that'll work. Would be nice to finally have that code tested and running...

@Tinkeringbell What kind of test is it? Web service testing?

@Ælis Nah, there's supposed to be some code that merges two things into one other thing if they're within 10 cm of each other. He picked something to test with that was closer to 50cm apart ;)

@Tinkeringbell Wrong use case then. Happens to me all the time. And then I'm like "Is this suppose to do that?"

Yep :) Bit my fault too, I usually put the specs in the e-mail with the patches, forgot to do that this time (because I already sent them before his vacation, weeks ago XD)

9:12 AM
Seems like my test environment has a mysterious bug that nobody knows where it comes from. If I ask Alex, they tell me to go ask Bob (because the bug isn't on their end). If I ask Bob, they tell me to go ask Charlie and if I ask Charlie, they tell me to go ask Alex... ><
After one hour, it's now fixed \o/ It was a cache issue. Weird bug are always because of the cache it seems

\o/

hmm, some poor dude just came to me with some issue, apparently he's trying to upgrade our .NET version from 4.6.1 to 4.7.2. It's causing a lot of headaches

@Ash If you have any suggestion reading that are similar to "A long way to a small, angry planet", I'm all ear. I absolutly loved it (and the other books by this same author) but I seem to be unable to find other books who have the same ambiance :(

10:16 AM
where are the flags? :o
There's no flag to handle o_o

I think things have been slow. Not that many great questions and not that many answers to flag NAA as such :P

@avazula Maybe you should dig up some old stuff if you want some work to do :p

It's been... I think more than a week since we hit HNQ

@Tinkeringbell A little less, but my HNQ question was really not that hot (I was surprise to see it in the HNQ)

@Ælis I don't have time for that :p

10:21 AM
Pfff :P

erh, I just work too much :)
Last week the accountant blamed me because of my insane amount of overtime

@avazula Did you listen to them and decided to do less overtime then? (or no overtime at all)
@avazula Also, I don't know this accountant, but I already like them :p

@Ælis I don't have much choice. I'm still on probation, we have a product to launch by September, the whole IT team has an insane schedule, ... I left at 4PM last Friday, my coworker said "you're leaving already?", I reminded them I had already worked for 42 hours ^^

@avazula :/ Maybe you should try going to work later then? There is still a month to go before September, burning yourself out doesn't seem like a good idea :/

10:36 AM
@Ælis I prefer working in the mornings :) but no worries, I already slowed down a bit. I can't do more than 44hours anyways otherwise I'll be grounded haha

@avazula I prefer too, but when it's the only solution for me to not work overtime, well... In any case, I'm glad to know that you already slowed down and that you won't work more than 44h a week :)

@Ælis and now I have some more time! Yesterday I baked granola bars :D

@avazula Oh, nice!

@Ælis It's so good. Well, not for my diet, but the taste... yum

@avazula Ahah x) I'm not so fan of granola bars (unless if there is a lot of chocolat in it) but I definitively enjoy them (without chocolat) when I'm hungry (my stomack is really happy with them :p )

10:48 AM
@Ælis I tried a recipe with oats, almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, agave syrup, grape oil and chocolate chips. It's so good and filling!

@avazula With all that, it must definitiely be filling!

Am I not making you hungry before lunch? :p

Nah, I'm not hungry for "fat" stuff during the summer. I'm more straving for fruits and vegetables. Also, I just eat full container of blueberries, so I'm fine :p
Alright, time for me to go eat now!

Have fun!

> "So here are some tips I've found useful to have those kind of difficult conversations." Isn't that enough ? It indicates that I've used those strategies for similar conversations. Detailing what those conversations were about seems unnecessary.
Doesn't seem good enough to me, but I don't really know what to answer

1:42 PM
@avazula ahh my b

Is it just me or have things been pretty quiet lately?

@scohe001 Both. You have been pretty quiet lately and things have been pretty quiet lately :p

Nah, it's been quiet.

Haha well played :p
How have you been lately, @Ælis?
(Also does this ping you? @Ael ooh it does!)

@scohe001 Yep ^^
@scohe001 Fine I guess. I just want a part-time terribly badly. I had a one week holiday who allowed me to rest and realize how nice it was to have free time and feel well rested and now I want more of that.
And you, are you planning any vacation soon?

@Ælis haha I 110% feel you. Coming from college only a few years ago it still feels weird to be in the summer months and still be working :(
@Ælis well I just got back from my camping trip and I had another short vacation a few weeks before that...so I'm all out of time for the foreseeable future :/
What'd you end up doing for your holiday?

3:27 PM
@scohe001 Arf, vacation are always too short
@scohe001 I took one week at the ocean/beach where I saw my extended family which is always nice (at least for this part of them). And I'm going to take one week in August (near the 15th) to go to the mountain (I like moutain more than beach but I like seeing this part of my extended family even more than going to the mountain)

Ooh that sounds like a lot of fun! I grew up living right next to the beach--beach days with the family are the best :)
Mountain sounds awesome too tho! Are you a hiker?

@scohe001 Not really, I kind of hate sport x) But I love the quietness and the landscape plus the fact that there are a lot of wild blueberries (the delicious French kind, not the American kind) where we go and I always pick and eat a lot of them :P

Ooh that sounds amazing!! Before we left to Yosemite, I had read this and some other similar blog posts, but despite our searching we didn't end up finding any wild fruits that were edible :(
A quiet mountain with a bunch of blueberries sounds like heaven though. I'm super jealous

4:15 PM
@scohe001 (Sorry for the long response, something came up at work). Honestly, I can imagine doing hikking in the mountain (which I sometimes do with my parents, even if I'm not a fan) without finding anything to eat. I even know what flowers I can safely eat ^^
@scohe001 Growing up near the beach would make a lot of people jealous too (I might be part of them :p )

4:51 PM
The site is down :(

Everything is down apparently
And it almost seems like chat messages are posted twice, but don't panic: refreshing your page will show only 1 ;)

Interesting that chat is fine but the site is broken

@Rainbacon They're pretty separated, I believe

5:42 PM
Oh, I guess we're back
@ExtrovertedMainMan Ummm, so that question just happened.
@ExtrovertedMainMan Feels like it could be a troll question, but that's just a gut feeling

@Rainbacon Perhaps it's time to rephrase the 'why people interact the way they do' in the help center :/

Maybe?

user15026
@Ælis What sort of things did you love about it, in particular? That should help me try to find some new things to recommend. :)

@Rainbacon I'm having a vacation coming up. I'll postpone until then ;)
Probably put it up on meta first too ;)

5:57 PM
Doing anything fun for your vacation?

@Rainbacon Crocheting the kit I showed in here yesterday, I ordered a book I talked about with Ash on Twitter, and I have two other books that I've half-read that I'm also going to finish. I have Stardew Valley on the Switch and promised @TheTinyMan we'd try a co-op game if we can find a suitable timespot :)
Oh... and I have to clean my room.
Which is usually fun because I find stuff I no longer knew I had XD
Maybe I'm going to visit a zoo with my brother, if he has time to spare. Otherwise, I'll likely visit one by myself (but that's not half as fun)
That's about it, I think :D

user15026
@Tinkeringbell You will have to let me know what you think of Because Internet!

user15026
I liked it quite a bit.

@Ash Will do! It really does look good, I already like it :)

Sounds relaxing (except the cleaning part)

6:01 PM
@Rainbacon Oh, I'll do the cleaning when my parent's aren't home... then it's just as relaxing: I can just move stuff out of my room one by one to their bedroom, clean/dust, and move back... and I don't have to do it all in one day!
My cleaning strategy is usually 'it gets worse before it gets better' which doesn't really work if mom is home, but works great if she isn't and just sees the end result when she's back :)

Q: Is it time to finally cut my family out of my life?

MinefieldI've recently had a few huge blowups with my family that has shown me how I am both viewed and treated, and I think it's about time that I just cut ties altogether. I guess that I just want to make sure that I'm not overreacting before I pull the trigger. Sorry, this ended up a lot longer than ...

@Tinkeringbell Oh geez when does your vacation start again? :-D

@TheTinyMan Friday afternoon!

Nice! :-D

Yeah, I'm kinda looking forward to it. It also means though that this week is kinda crazy wrt coding: I'm trying to fix something that just keeps presenting more and more edge-cases :/

6:35 PM
@Ash It wasn't stereotypical, there was a lot of diversity in it, the characters were deep and touching. They made you feel feelings. I think that last part is the most important for me: being able to be sad with the character and also happy with them. For that, you need real, 3 dimensional characters. Also, the love stories weren't taking all the place. There was just a part of the story but not such an important one.
(Also, thanks for agreeing to help me :D )

@Ælis (same thing just happened to me--don't even worry!) I agree with not being able to hike without food. I always bring a bunch of bars and snacks. There's nothing like eating outside :)
@Ælis heh I'm one of those jealous people too. We don't exactly have "beaches" out here in Texas. It's something I miss

@scohe001 I was more talking about the food you found but I do absolutely always have food with me when hiking. Most of the time it's because I'm going to picnic, but I also take "emergency food" with me

@Tinkeringbell ahh so it's not so much that things have been quiet. It's just that everything is getting deleted :p

Man now I'm craving some Stardew Valley! ;-)

@Ælis ooh picnics are the bomb dot com. Do you guys have a lot of nature in France?

6:49 PM
@scohe001 That looks like a weird question to me Oo Don't you have a lot of nature too??? I guess, proportionally, we probably have less nature but we still have a lot of it (and it's the green kind of nature, the one that I love the most)

@Ælis we have EVERYTHING! Mountain, sea, land, you name it :D

@Ælis idk I mean some states here in the US don't really have any good hikes or trails while others (Oregon/Washington) have a crazy amount of gorgeous nature
@avazula holy moly, y'all have LAND? Time to go to France

@scohe001 ... I mean, countryside. Don't make fun of me like that :p

@TheTinyMan Hah! Too bad I just started a new game all for myself! :P

@scohe001 Well, we have a crazy amount of different kind of nature in a relatively small area. That what is so great about France, you have every kind of nature available in very few amount of time

6:53 PM
@avazula hehe I couldn't resist :p
@Ælis dang that's pretty cool. Reminds me of Israel. They used to say you could go from snowboarding in the morning to sipping a margarita on the beach that night. @Mith can you confirm?

@Ælis How're your tundras and your snow? ;-)
@Tinkeringbell That's fine, I'm sure we'll make another one on Saturday! ^.^

@TheTinyMan We will!

Maybe I'll create two farms in the meantime! >.<

Hahaha XD I'm not that easily jealous!

Guess I'll have to work harder to make that happen, huh?

7:00 PM
@TheTinyMan Melting... Your "eternal snow" is getting fewer and fewer every years :(
@scohe001 We can do that in France as well, it's pretty nice :)

@Ælis In the Alps?

@TheTinyMan How? I'm the kind of person that cares for her farms! I don't just create a bunch of them just to let them go to waste! :P

user15026
@Ælis You might like Kaia Sonderby's books (start with Testing Pandora, then Failure to Communicate, then Tone of Voice)

@avazula It the Alps for snowboarding and then the Mediterranean for the beach

@Ælis ha, right :) I'm used to the Pyrénées, I guess it's a bit harder over there

7:05 PM
@avazula But probably still doable, right? Unless there isn't any road?

@Ælis I guess you'd have to drive a bit more but otherwise it seems doable

@Ælis Oh man I didn't actually expect it would have snow since it wasn't explicitly named, now I feel bad... D:
@Tinkeringbell I dunno. I'll come do donuts in your yard or something. :-P
The other dev lead where I work and I were talking about emigrating to The Netherlands today, apparently he's looked into it too :-P So I'll bring my minivan just to do some donuts!

@TheTinyMan my yard doesn't even exist yet :P Still needs to be built :P

@Tinkeringbell I'll write "Tiny was here" in the wet concrete!

@Ash The summary looks promising, thanks! Too bad these books don't seem to be available in French though :/ Maybe I should start reading more stuff in English, even if it's harder and I don't like it as much
@TheTinyMan If it makes you feel better, we don't actually have tundras ^^

7:18 PM
@Ælis Nope, still feel like a big meanie!

user15026
@Ælis I will see if I can find some other things as well, this was just my first immediate thought :)

@Ash Thanks! Don't hesitate to ping me at any time for books recommendation! :D

user15026
You might like Rachel Caine's Honors series, that starts with "Honor Among Thieves"

7:33 PM
@scohe001 In the winter, when there's snow, yes. It takes about eight-nine hours to get from the Chermon (snow) to Eilat (beach, the other end of the country). And less if you want to head to somewhere not quite as far - it can take like four hours to get from snow to beach.

@Ash damn that's a really cool sounding premise. And an awesome way to talk a whole lot about autism without making it seem unnatural or forced
@Mithrandir I'm jealous, that sounds amazing!

The snow is kinda disappointing, though... not really worth it. Just head to the beach :P

@Ash That sounds promising too :) Do you know her other books "The Weather Warden"?

user15026
@Ælis I've not read any of her other stuff

user15026
@scohe001 I really, really loved the books. They're so fun

7:44 PM
@Ash Oh, I love fun books. That makes it a "+1" for this one!

@Mithrandir Can you make snowmen or have snowball fights with it? :-D

8:03 PM
@TheTinyMan Debatable.
With all the people trudging around, most of it has been turned to icy slush anyway. If you want proper snow, don't head to the popular places.

That's fair enough, haha

Q: Forgiveness a mistake or a blessing

Q: Coworker mumbles to herself when working, is it okay to ask her to stop?

YohanRothMy coworker that sits right next to me keeps mumbling to herself when she types or reads, not too loud, low-voice mumble that I can hear without understanding words. Is it okay if I ask her to stop doing it? Is it rude? It really irritates me and disturbs me from my own thinking, but I do not kn...
