Q: Short story about a game of baseball with aliens for the fate of humanity, involves a "trick ankle"

FuzzyBootsI asked about this nine years ago on the TvTropes YKTS section, and for no answers. Recently, I decided to check again, and saw that I'd commented on an unaccepted (and possibly wrong) answer that it was indeed the story I was looking for. It was a science fiction story that I read in the early ...

This does not really answer the question. If you have a different question, you can ask it by clicking Ask Question. You can also add a bounty to draw more attention to this question once you have enough reputation. - From ReviewStormblessed 32 secs ago
Shouldn’t it be “this does not answer the question”? The “really” makes the wording much weaker

Q: Boy's faces crushed with a millstone as coming-of-age ritual: short story identification

emchristiansenPlease help me identify a short story. In the story, there is a village in which the coming-of-age ritual for men involves crushing their faces with a millstone. The boy lays his head under the millstone, and the millstone is lowered until it breaks the nose and the bones of the face. The protag...

Q: What was the use of the doll?

AdamantIn the series Typewriter (2019), it was clearly very important to Fakeer to have the doll that resembled him. That's why he demanded a piece of wood in prison and spent so much time whittling by hand (and, one assumes, a bit of magic). It was clearly useful in some sense to the attempt to revive ...

Q: "That's no (inanimate object), that's my WIFE!" (mid 1970's audio media)

uhohI've searched several different ways and I find what look like they could be references to the line I am thinking of, but I can't find an authoritative reference. I am remembering an audio media story circa mid 1970's that could have been a radio play or possibly an album or single and possibly ...

Q: which Iain M Banks short stories have been adapted for Radio

@OrangeDog Any reason you removed the character tag? It seems to be useful and character tags are okay as tags... especially on Marvel questions. — TheLethalCarrot 5 mins ago
was removed so ready for deletion, not adding back straight away to avoid an edit war. Will see why they removed it first

Hey there was another one to tag

Grmbl
Don't want to go into an edit war either, I'm the one who retagged one of them

Well I've edited it back in, won't do the others though cos of 5-in-15 so add them back if you want
The other older question FWIW: scifi.stackexchange.com/q/63495/58193
And the other one that doesn't have it now: scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/216555/…

I would but that'd look like piling on at that point
Also better to space 'em out
Cluttering of the homepage blah blah blah

Would keep pushing down my two [mcu] answers from yesterday so yeah don't ;P

Q: How do you pronounce "Hain"?

DaveInCazThe planet Hain is referenced in numerous books of Le Guin's Hainish cycle. I always imagined it would rhyme with "rain" but I've recently heard it pronounced more like "hay - een" on an audiobook. Is there any definitive information for how it should be pronounced?

Q: Could you willingly cast yourself into Mount Doom with the One Ring?

jamesdwalkerI'm aware that no-one can willingly cast the One Ring into Mount Doom, but could you do it if you jumped in with it? Tolkien Letter 246 seemed to imply that this was a potential path for Frodo or Gollum if he had achieved redemption, but I'm not sure if this was actually possible in the story as...

Q: What storyline do the characters of Death and Return of Superman follow?

King of NESThis was a SNES game from the late 90s, where you get to play as several different Supermen. Superman Superboy Man of Steel Viator(?) Q: Can we move the question statistics to under the tags?

TheLethalCoderFrom Catija's answer to my related question about why the question statistics were moved I understand why it had to happen. However, the placement for me still feels odd. It interrupts the flow of the question having some "noise" information, for most, in between the title and body. Most people a...

I'm surprised this scifi.stackexchange.com/q/216712/98028 is downvoted that much. It's not very interesting, sure, but the usual "likely reasons for downvote" aren't there, no profanity, no rant, no sex. Meh questions don't usually get downvoted that much

The examples given probably aren't helping it

Well yeah but my point is that (IMO) they're just meh
It's not, you know, the kind of "would the ring work if Frodo put it on his balls" crap
Where the example given is just utter crap when you could have replaced it with, IDK, a toe

@Jenayah Don't give people ideas!

Point being it doesn't reek of bad faith
@TheLethalCarrot I've seen it asked twice here already...

4:20 PM
Oh yeah it certainly doesn't seem to be asked in bad faith

I won't loose sleep over it but while I'd have expected 1-2 downvotes, 5 seems more than I'd have tought

I downvoted it but I think I was the first or second downvoter
I don't think I'd have sent it into the basement

4:37 PM
@Jenayah Because they seem to have completely misunderstood what Taskmaster does.
Taskmaster doesn't have any power to change their form, so they can't turn into another person at all, let alone a pregnant one.

@Adamant I don't disagree with that, but I'd be surprised if the 4 other downvotes came from Taskmaster fans. Character is relatively unknown
By "4 other downvotes", I'm assuming TLC isn't a Taskmaster fan
And thus his vote wasn't because of OP misunderstanding the character... But I'm assuming

Maybe so. But it's kind of like asking whether Batman can freeze things with his heat vision.

See, I'd expect downvotes on that. Because SFF users, even non-fans, have a vague idea of who Batman is. And might think it's stupid.
But Taskmaster? I wouldn't expect most people to open the thing in the first place
Well I guess the character will get a bump in attention with the Black Widow movie but still

Holy duck, that luck! A tree in the square outside fell because of the wind. The trunk fell right between the two cars parked in front of it. All they got was foliage and some branches
Well shit, that made me realize something. If the west tree falls down as well, I don't have a kitchen wall anymore.
So hum... Let's hope the crazy weather slows down a bit? 😅

It’s weird how posts with lots of off-topic comments get locked. Shouldn’t they just do something like lock the comments instead?

@Stormblessed There's no comment lock.
Only posts can be locked.

...despite years of requests...

Give it 6 to 8 weeks years decades

6:43 PM
SE can be motivated to do it much faster in just two easy steps: (1) Come up with an argument that the lack of comment locks is somehow unwelcoming to new users. (2) Complain about it on Twitter.

Here!
Oh wait... we weren't taking roll call? Never mind.

It’s weird to write an answer I think is really really good and get no upvotes, downvotes, or comments
I guess it’s cause I edited the question after posting it so it didn’t look like there was a new answer

7:34 PM
Voting is random and largely incomprehensible.
Nothing weird about it.

@Null Looks like the problem is older than I thought:
The old system worked great. I am very disappointed that Jeff was so spineless as to give into the complaints of a few new users who did not understand the system. — GEOCHET Aug 26 '09 at 13:54

Q: Nickleodeon special with puppets as "Goblins", looking for a Crown

Russ RainfordI have a new show to ask about. This one was a late 80s/ early 90s Nickleodeon or Nick Jr special, utlizing puppets and live action cast members. Russ RainfordThis is likely a scan from post 2005 [given Supergirl's outfi], but I don;t know if it was from an Outsiders comic, *Teen Titans** or some other story. If anyone has any idea, I would be curious as to what caused supergirl to just jump Nightwing that way.
