@GcL oh man.

GcL
I felt really bad for one guy I lived with in DC who had been in the national guard to pay for school. He did four tours of duty.

Afternoon all, rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/150900/… Just got closed while I was editing it to make it more specific. Before I go ahead to vote to reopen, is that legit?

@GcL I'm not sure if I knew anyone who went out and enlisted. I think I was too young for the direct affect.

@Rubiksmoose does that edit make it worth a reopen?

It's a duplicate question.
The question is essentially the same as the linked question and the answer in the linked question covers the dupe.

it's a probably a duplicate but possibly not precisely of the linked question because I think you are also confused about what spell levels are
Fire Bolt is a cantrip, not a 1st level spell.

I'm fine with spell levels, the reason I ask is that the Magic Initiate limits the power of 1st level spells, but not cantrips.

GcL
Interestingly, fire bolt would then use the INT score as the spell-casting modifier.

then the duplicate perfectly encompasses your question

GcL
@StuperUser Doesn't limit the power of the spells. You can still upcast them if you have higher level slots from some other class... e.g. druid.
nm

7:11 PM
cantrips are based on character level, not specific level in any classes.

GcL
not through the feat
Oh, wait... you learn the spell can cast it at it's lowest level... which doesn't preclude you from upcasting it.
It doesn't say, you can ONLY cast it at it's lowest level.... just in case you don't have any spell slots from a spellcaster class.
There's probably a Q&A on here about that already.

@GcL I think magic initiate is weird about that, hang on

> Lexicological Chaos: Whenever you succeed on an attack roll with a zero-level spell, the target must succeed on a DC10 Dexterity save or fall prone.

Q: Can you cast a magic initiate spell using spell slots?

Tobias FizzlewigSay I play a wizard who learns cure wounds by taking magic initiate. Could I cast that spell using the Wizard's spell slots?

So now, all your cantrips can trip.

7:13 PM
Regardless, that point isn't relevant for the sake of this question it seems right?

@Yuuki trippy

yeah, it's irrelevant for this question.

@StuperUser It looks like a dupe to me. Though maybe I'm missing some of the finer point of what you are asking. At the very least it is confusing because you ask about a cantrip and then specifically point to the line about 1st level spells in your comment that doesn't seem to apply here.
Is there something we are missing?

I don't think you can upcast cantrips.

nope

7:16 PM
You can't

IIRC, cantrip casting doesn't even behave like regular spellcasting with regards to most mechanics.

No, cantrips don't require spell slots and scale in power based on character level instead

it still uses the Spell Attack action and uses your spell save DC and all that, it just doesn't cost you spell slots and can't be empowered beyond your character levelling up

GcL
They're the communism of spells

Take back the means of spell slot preparation.

7:18 PM
the only difference between casting a cantrip and casting a levelled spell is that it doesn't consume spell slots, it's otherwise mechanically the same as casting any spell

Hmm... might be a different system then.

I think that covers everything. The question needs untangling. I started asking it about the cantrip, which that dupe definitely covers. But like you said, got into the details about 1st level spell. Since the wording doesn't PROHIBIT upcasting, through other spell slots. I've got covered what I need.

GcL
@Carcer Except all the exceptions that specifically mention cantrips... like haste

well, the only two differences between casting a cantrip are...

GcL
Can't cast two spells per round unless one is a cantrip

7:19 PM
I remember a system where cantrips are basically treated as a separate spellcasting system, such that cantrips were in their own sub-block in a class statblock, separate from regular spellcasting.

@Carcer I had to read that like 6 times. my brain kept saying "cast a catnip"

GcL
battle casting feat... can use reaction to cast a cantrip instead of opportunity attack.

Seems weird that this feat grants a single slot for 3d6 and a cantrip for 4d10

@GcL ad the Cantrip is cast as the Action. a Minor but important detail

it's not "or"

GcL
7:19 PM
@goodguy5 Wasn't catnap an AD&D spell?
@G.Moylan are there bonus action cantrips?

@GcL the magical equivalent of a conk on the head

cantrips do eventually become more powerful that 1st level spells in some cases but that's a very high level development
then you're better off using those 1st level slots for other stuff than damaging attacks, sure

@GcL not that I know of but people get weird with the use of the Quicken metamagic option that can lead to unintended circumstances

GcL
Fairy fire is amazingly effective vs tanks

mage armour never goes out of fashion

7:21 PM
Shield, too
+5 AC is hawt

GcL
emporer's new mage armor
@G.Moylan also not getting magic missile nuked

@GcL lol yes that too

GcL
@G.Moylan So upset to get hit by L5 magic missile. Just ruins a whole encounter really.... bleeding all over the place.

Bane is also really good for stealth segments.
Once you cast it, nobody cares who you are until you put on a mask.

that one was a stretch

7:23 PM
No, that's Alter Self.

GcL
I'll give it to him. Better than spending his time studying the blade

@GcL Shillelagh.

GcL
Good example

Q: Can you use a reaction to affect initiative rolls?

FrazzleUKExpanding upon this question in a tweet at Jeremy Crawford who confirms once again that Initiative is a skill check and can be modified by things that modify ability checks. Cutting Words states When a creature that you can see within 60 feet of you makes an attack roll, an ability check, o...

Which is also the basis of my concept of a Gish Druid, who uses Shillelagh and Polearm Mastery as a Spores Druid to output a large amount of melee damage.
It quickly drops off in power after Tier 2 though, so it's only really effective below level 11.

7:31 PM
I was thinking about spells with letters swapped and what they would be. Sacred Flume - a 5 ft. long hollow log of hardwood appears and falls into a nearby body of water. Any water from the resulting splash that comes in contact with a creature is treated as holy water for one round.

And of course, its best levels are 2-4, before the Martial classes get their Extra Attacks.
@Yuuki The Adventure Zone gave a magic item to Merle that let him do that to his spells once a day.
I don't think it ever got much use though, sadly.

@Xirema Like so many TAZ magic items.

Manor Illusion - an image of a massive house springs into being before your eyes.

@Rubiksmoose I feel like they blew their "Magic Item Effectiveness" budget on the Slicer of T'pir Weir Isles and couldn't afford to make anything else effective ever again. XD

Fare Bolt - Target must succeed on DC12 Dexterity save or an amount of gold equivalent to $3 USD grows legs, jumps out of their wallet, and runs away.

7:35 PM
@Xirema That was so amazing. I loved that moment so much.

Guido-nce - A voice directs you to the nearest object fitting your query, speaking in a strong New Jersey Italian accent.

@Xirema For Reference. I went with the version that included Griffin's (The DM) panic attack when he realized what was about to happen.

@Xirema I had to pause it I was laughing so hard when I figured out what was happening.

Poisson Spray - An amount equivalent to 1d4 per character level of fish fly towards your target.
If you could re-arrange letters, Spare The Dying could become Spear The Dying. A completely different spell.

@Xirema I don't think they used the letter swapping one to its full potential either (though as a DM I basically had a heart attack when they allowed it in)

7:42 PM
Produce Flame - a disembodied voice yells at your target about their perceived shortcomings (see Vicious Mockery).

Wash - makes you really clean. 33% chance you can never wash again

> Find Steer. You have a male cow. It won't be very helpful for your burgeoning Ranching entrepreneur.

**Summon Lesser Damon** - Private James Ryan appears.
**Summon Greater Damon** - Jason Bourne appears.
damn you, multiline paste

@Carcer Summon Lesser Damon - the puppet from Team America: World Police

> Fig Cloud. A mass of figs occupies a target area.
> Hunter's Mack. Some dude named Hunter appears and kisses your target.

8:08 PM
> Altar Self. You take on the appearance of a Parish Minister for one hour.

quick rubiks, reopen that question so you can instead close it as too broad

> Animate Lead. You land the starring role in Pixar's next hit movie. You'll earn a lot of money but as the lead of an Animated Movie, it probably won't increase your reputation in the industry.

user15026
@Xirema hahahahah

> Arcane Dye. Your Wizard Robe becomes cool as heck.
> Arcane COh, uhhhhhhh.......... Maybe we should skip that one.....

OK well, now I'm not sure how to guide that "strongest spell question"
It would have been interesting if they asked about spell slots across editions

8:16 PM
> Floating Di—

@Carcer hahaha

@Rubiksmoose The strongest spell is definitely Poison Spray because alcohol is a poison.

How is the answer to that question not just Wish, in all Editions?

@Xirema And thus Poison Spray has the highest ratio of alcohol-to-slots for all spells.

@Xirema That's... a good point. Though now the question has moved one. It probably would have been? I don't know enough about other editions (though I've heard 5e actually weakened wish).
@Yuuki Oh and the spray really increases the surface area of the alcohol too!

8:22 PM
@Xirema because Karsus's Avatar exists

@Carcer the reason I removed the comments is that I'm honestly not sure that these are good questions and so splitting them up is just going to make things worse context-wise.

fair enough

Though definitely it would be the only way to go from here to get it reopened.

they're answerable, albeit not particularly engaging questions

I'm not even sure they are answerable. Not without specifying a lot of stuff. The spell Q would essentially turn into a ridiculous charop question for one thing I think. (eg magic items allowed, sorcerer metamagic, wizard school, allies help, how long to prepare, etc.)
Either that or the boring interpretation which would be to find the spell that has the most d6 of damage and then also mention wish.

@Rubiksmoose i'm waiting for @DavidCoffron for an edge-case spectacular :)

where can I find the meta on asking homebrew questions, again?
I have a spell I would like evaluated

Q: Is there any way for a Half-Orc Sorcerer to get proficiency with a heavy weapon?

Yash CapoorI have a player playing a half orc sorcerer who's partially in denial about his magic. Wants to be a melee fighter. Recently, the party beat a group of orcs who were putting him down for being half-human. He wants to use the greataxe the leader was using. The weapon master feat is limited to sim...

@HotRPGQuestions Thanks but that's not what I was looking for

@NautArch hahaha. I'm pretty sure he found a loop that just made the damage infinite right?

8:30 PM
@Rubiksmoose it was glorious
useless. but glorious.

So ridiculous lol.

A: Can you escape from Web or Moonbeam using readied movement?

Medix2You can at least escape from web Web is a more straightforward case; as you've shown it says: "Each creature that starts its turn in the webs or that enters them during its turn must make a Dexterity saving throw" Emphasis mine And if you already took the Ready action to move on your previ...

> "including moobeam"
moobeam!
that's a good one

@NautArch I was summoned? What for may I ask?
Been real busy at work so haven't got much stacking in

@DavidCoffron I think it was this: rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/150909/…

9:06 PM
Two letters instead of one but Divine Curd.
Holy Aura-chs.

9:20 PM
Dee Pennyway wrote a thread on Twitter about the benefits of descriptive play over performative play.

I didn't want to totally hijack the conversation earlier, but I dusted off my probability calculator to evaluate my Gish Sorcerer template vs a Champion GWF/GWM Fighter.

@BESW Nicholas Masyk elaborates on how descriptive play creates more equitable table dynamics and character-driven stories.
@Xirema That is a great many numbers.

Important Notes:

- The Sorcerer only uses Booming Blade. I didn't factor in Green Flame Blade, cast regularly or with a Bonus Action from being Quickened. Secondary Damage from Booming Blade is also not factored in because it depends on enemy behavior
- Sorcerer "Shadow" rows involve use of the Shadow Blade spell, cast at the highest level possible
- Sorcerer x1 attacks are made normally; x2 attacks are made by Twinning out Booming Blade against two targets, at the cost of 1 Sorcery Point per round
TL;DR: It's surprisingly competitive with a GWF/GWM Fighter, even if in the long term the Fighter wins out; but the Sorcerer also has their normal spellcasting behind it.

@Xirema AAAAH numbers!

Pretty good for what I consider to be a proper Gish build. 8)

9:32 PM
@Xirema So you are basically deciding between action surge, indomitable, and fighter subclass stuff vs sorcerer spells

@DavidCoffron Yeah, in essence.

@Xirema I'm glad to see my sorcerer build validated (a while ago I made an optimized melee sorcerer)

@DavidCoffron XD

Although mine was Strength based and used a greatsword to great effect
(Githyanki for the proficiency)

Well there you go. I think the extra Dex is a little too valuable to give up, since with Mage Armor, that's 18AC with no other modifiers.
Find a way to get Shield Proficiency and get 20/21/22/23 depending on how good a Shield you can find; boost to 28 with judicious use of the Shield spell...

9:35 PM
@Xirema Well I went for moderately armored and got the AC from that, so its just a different approach. Not quite as optimized

@DavidCoffron There you go.
Also benefit from the Sorcerer's innate proficiency to Constitution Saving Throws to help keep your Shadow Blade active for the full duration.

We started at level 10 (so there only 2 levels waiting period to get to max Strength instead of the bunch of time waiting to get max Strength and medium armor)
Then again... I started with 18 strength because it was rolled stats, so it may be a bit of a bad demonstration
Might be best to grab the typical 1 level in cleric to get shields and heavy armor if you do the strength build

@DavidCoffron But that 4 Sorcery Points per Short Rest optimization tho....

@NautArch @Rubiksmoose When I need damage comparison, I always go here.

@Xirema (Please try as hard as you can to imagine that I said that with a straight face)

9:38 PM
@Xirema You mean the literally worst capstone?
At least monks can benefit from theirs (ki points per initiative) in some situations (grueling dungeons). 4 sorc points is so meh
Like. That's 10 points per day on average (2-3 short rests in my experience)
Actuallly... put that way, it isn't bad
Maybe it isn't the worst, but definitely bottom half

@DavidCoffron The best case scenario is like 4-6 extra 1st level spells per day.
Or a single extra 5th level spell a day.

or a clutch metamagic use

It's not nothing, but from a level 20 feature, it's pretty awful.

@Xirema Not if you use it for other things. I could see it being useful in a heavy-encountered adventuring day for mor Hounds of Ill Omen uses\
3 more Hounds can be quite nice
I think the biggest thing detracting from sorcerer capstone is they don't get much else at the 4th tier. Bards also have a fairly mediocre capstone, but they just got level 18 magical secrets 2 levels earlier

@DavidCoffron Yeah, but Hound of Ill Omen is actually just straight-up broken. It's a little unfair to judge the value of all Sorcery Points used by that one feature. =P

9:45 PM
Sorcerers get their fairly mediocre transformation from their bloodline
@Xirema If I say you are wrong, I'd be lying xD
Hound of Ill Omen is like a repeatebly Heightened Spell Metamagic. It's so good
@Xirema Although, I've never had a GM try to kill it; it might be less good if your enemies target it down (then it's just an expensive Heightened Spell)

And when it's not that, it's also a spammable companion that

- knocks creatures prone after dealing damage
- gains advantage from adjacent allies
- can thwart retreating enemies
- is summonable as a Bonus Action (meaning you can still cast spells with your Action on the same turn!)
Hound of Ill Omen + Hold Person/Hold Monster.

@Xirema I never considered it for its Prone. At a DC 13, most enemies you want to blow 3 SP on succeed anyway

@DavidCoffron It's a Strength Saving Throw though.
Even a lot of high Strength creatures don't actually have proficiency in Strength Saving Throws.

@Xirema That's true. I've only been a shadow sorcerer at level 12+, so it didn't come up. It might be really good for the prone at 6-10
Still think it's not that great if your enemy targets it
But still top tier for a level 6 sorc bloodline feature

10:14 PM
@Xirema can it give you snuggles during downtime, though? XD

Ben
10:36 PM
@Akixkisu I was actually going to do one up today lol

11:09 PM
@Yuuki I've never had that experience with Portal 2 co-op, but I played the co-op with my twin brother.
also, hi everyone!

Ben
What would be better to determine a random 25% chance. A d4, a d8, or a d20
or a d12.
Actually... I think I'll go with the d12. Because that's odd; which makes it perfect haha.

> 'No Thank You Evil!' assumes every kid has a companion, and that’s a great piece of tech, since it gives the GM a “voice” in the scene, even if there are no other characters present. (Rob Donoghue, "Playing with the Dude")

Q: Can you move between the attacks of a Twinned Booming Blade

Medix2Under "Moving Between Attacks" it says: "If you take an action that includes more than one weapon attack, you can break up your movement even further by moving between those attacks..." If you were to twin booming blade then this would be an action that includes more than one weapon attack....
