@Xirema almost certain. There's no such thing as taking an action without doing something. When you take the attack action, it means you must attack something right? There's no such thing as saying you take an action and then doing nothing related to it.

@trogdor That's totally fair :)

> French indie studio Tactical Adventures has announced Solasta: Crown of the Magister.

The game is planned for a Windows PC release (via Steam), and has a Kickstarter campaign set for sometime later this Summer.

Solasta: Crown of the Magister is a tactical, dungeon crawling RPG based on the 5th Edition ruleset where players control a band of four adventurers.

The game places a heavy emphasis on verticality and manipulating light to combat the creatures that lurk in the darkest corners of the tombs and caves you’ll be exploring. You can watch an animated teaser trailer above, and check

Q: My players like to search everything. What do they find?

MaxwellI am currently running a D&D 4e campaign. Every time my players defeat/subdue the monsters in a room, they decide to search the room. However, I never have anything interesting for them to find. I realize that sometimes the answer is just, "You find nothing," but I don't think that that should al...

Mornin'
I rewatched some episodes of the 1990's Men in Black: The Series cartoon. I liked it when I was a wee lad --- there's so much fun you can derive out of the basic premise of secretive suits defending Earth from negative alien influence (while also protecting the good among them).
On re-watch, at least the first episodes have a bit too cartoony flow to them for my current tastes, particularly with Jay being portrayed as a relatively ineffective comedy sidekick to a much more serious business Kay.
I like the Agent U gag (where their boss says something like "You did a good job" and the protagonists mistake he meant them) but I can't stop wondering how they translated it.
Stuff like that is really difficult to get across languages, English is "lucky" in that "did" is the same in its relevant conjugations.

5:06 AM
I just noticed the full tag wiki. It reads way too much like an ad for my liking. Anyone want to take a shot at revising the wording to be a little less promotional?

I don't know enough of the platform to write about it, but I would otherwise

5:39 AM
@V2Blast I was trying to edit it but basically just come to deleting almost all of it. I'm not sure how to make it is a good tag.

6:02 AM
@V2Blast I made a new version. I left out most of the information about the tool and made it into a tag wiki. I'm not sure about the wording of my section on not using it for tool-recommendations though.

@linksassin I cleaned it up a bit. Otherwise, seems better to me

@V2Blast It certainly looked like an ad before. I checked their wiki and homepage in case it had been copy-paste from there but didn't seem to match.
Unrelated note: I just lost my Fanatic streak with >60 days for the second time. So frustrating.

I wonder how long my current streak is, I don't think the site tracks it after one's earned the badge.

The Koakookaroo is a large, bear-like creature with gigantic, fluffy ears, that can move extremely fast by jumping, and also flight capable. Not overly smart, chaotically aggressive, and finds everything hilarious
She sketched it for me, and much like everyone else, found it very disturbing. She then said she was going to draw it again in bleach.
(Which was a typo from "black"... But I found it hilarious)

bleach is an appropriate tool
cleanse the abomination

@BESW remind me tomorrow to read this!

@V2Blast Read this tomorrow!

@BESW I specifically phrased it "remind me tomorrow" so I wouldn't get a response like this :P
instead of "remind me to read this tomorrow"

I specifically ignored your careful phrasing.

Q: Gold per encounter with looted equipment

Matthew StorelliHere's my scenario: CR 1 encounter (fast-paced) party is to receive 400 gold for the encounter. If I use, for example, a troglodyte, equipment is listed as 1 club, and 3 javelins for a total equipment value of 3 gold. When rewarding the remaining gold for the encounter should I assume half price...

How's it going?

neck make ouchie
other than that good

@goodguy5 :( You went to see someone about that recently right?

... kinda?

This is tight muscles/tendons in my upper back/neck.
Whereas the other problem is discs.

Though, honestly, I might also have disc issues in my neck.

Oh gotcha. Getting my back-adjacent problems mixed up.
Either way, I'm really sorry to hear that.

I'm in the market for just getting the whole spine replaced.

Gimme a metal one, terminator style

@goodguy5 oooooh if we are doing that I am so down yes good

@goodguy5 goodguyT5

@goodguy5 The thing on top 100% looks like a button. We should probably press the button

It makes the whole thing collapse, like one of those little string toys where you push the base.

user15026
I am totally imagining people just randomly crumpling now

1:15 PM
@goodguy5 Spending a decent chunk of money on regular massages was probably the second best investment decision that I have made.

I've tried that for my lower back, but it didn't help (before I knew it was discs).

I should give it a shot for my neck and shoulders....

and/or get wife to do it.

@Ash Terminators seem a lot less scary once you know you can just bop them lightly on the head to have them collapse.

a shiny metal spine would be cool
I have to be careful with mine cause I slipped a disk (I think) a while ago

@goodguy5 I'm a fan of Esalen message and similar certified massage systems as they come with a quality standard. While I think it is unlikely to treat spinal disk problems, it certainly helps in reducing symptoms (after communicating your issues).

@Akixkisu Did you run that Vagabond game yet?

How did it go or how is it going?

1:28 PM
@goodguy5 prep is all done, it is on Wednesday, your answer was a tremendous help :)

^_^

Happy to help

did anyone end up redeeming that PHB code? If not I can repost

@Rubiksmoose Did you just delete my answer by accident? If not I would appreciate an explanation of some form.

That answer on the gm for hire question is bad, right?

@Someone_Evil whoa did I? Link please?

a delete is, in fact, a super downvote

@goodguy5 Yeah, not a good answer. Honestly, I'm not sur about the question.

@Someone_Evil Yikes. That was going for a comment deletion, but I must have hit the wrong "delete" button. Thanks for letting me know and sorry about that!

@goodguy5 I can't really figure ou the question's intent. Are they just looking for per capita statistics?
It almost feels like they're rying to assess the market size to determine if it's a good business.

@Rubiksmoose No worries, just got real confused after the rep dropped by 100 (which I assume comes back after a few moments)

1:45 PM

Ah, there we are. All good.

^ In case anyone missed it. 50% off DNDBeyond PHB. First come first serve ^

@Someone_Evil Phew!

IDK if it's been redeemed. I'm not sure if I can check without actually redeeming the code
@NautArch I bought the new Essentials kit btw so that content should be unlocked for the chatizen campaign
in theory

2:03 PM
@Rubiksmoose re: the GM-for-hire question. Confirmed to be for market research, I don't think that's off-topic per se, but it feels weird.

@NautArch it does feel weird. There are plenty of examples of people doing what they're asking about but the stats gathering is... odd

@G.Moylan Right, it's pure market research. If it was asking about how to be one, or about interactions, that's much more ontopic.

@NautArch aren't there firms that make money doiing that kind of thing?
@G.Moylan "hey there Marketing Research Firm, how viable would it be for me to enter this market?"

Yeah. Besides the fact that it feels weird in part because it is definitely an uncommon type of request, some of the oddness might come from the fact that I doubt seriously that this kind of data is out there and publically available/shareable. note that this does not affect its topicality though

2:18 PM
Is it topical, though? Sure it's about GMing RPGs but the question isn't actually asking anything relevant to running an RPG. It's not a "are GMs-for-hire good/bad?" or "How should I go about becoming a GM-For-Hire?" question
it's asking us to do market research, which is literally someone's job somewhere
asking us if we've heard of GMs-for-hire is on-topic, imo, but asking us for statistical analysis of the market doesn't seem so
at least to me

@G.Moylan Well, here's my take at the moment: It is about the RPG industry and that is something that is reasonably within the expertise of this site I think. Not everything on this site has to be about running or playing the game. We also have topics about publishing and licensing for example as well.
I think it is asking a lot of answerers though and I doubt the complete answer they are looking for will be something that is immediately available here (if ever), but I'm reasonably confident it is on-topic at least.

2:34 PM
@Rubiksmoose fair. I do agree that it is asking a lot of a potential answerer. I'm not sure we're going to get a fully-qualified answer to the typical standards of this stack, though. or even if we can. The research just may not be available to us. It seems like it would be a lot of small cash-based "businesses" and those seem like they would be incredibly difficult to analyze, particularly for people without the proper tools

@Ash Target acquired?

GcL
@G.Moylan Seems like it's asking for someone to find sources and make an extrapolation. Similar to /r/theydidthemath

@G.Moylan For sure, answering this one will be very difficult and may not be possible at all to our standards. But we are fine having very hard or impossible questions hanging around because at some point we might be able to answer or that 1 in a million source might come around. That is, as long as the questions don't cause problems in the meantime.

Although @GcL and @Rubiksmoose it looks like OP edited and put a more-actionable question on their post, now. Seems much easier to answer

@G.Moylan Yup! The new version is much better. I think it provides a stricter bar for what counts so in that way I think it will make it harder. But also easier in the sense that it is much clearer now exactly what data is requested.

2:40 PM
The more specific the question, the easier it is to answer!

@G.Moylan "What kind of roll(s) is required in order to perform a fastball special from the back of a tamed trex-mount and dropkick a tyrannical mayor through his ballroom window under the light of a full moon?"

GcL
@goodguy5 What kind of roll to do it successfully? A good one.

@goodguy5 You need a Wild Magic Sorc 10/BM Fighter 5 with the Magic Initiate: Druid feat
@G.Moylan and then you roll percentile with advantage

3:01 PM
@goodguy5 You're playing Exalted, right?

ha

Or some kind of Fate game?

@goodguy5 Barrel.

I can't for the life of me remember how to find the xp needed to level. dalp?

@goodguy5 D&D?

3:10 PM
yea 5e

@Rubiksmoose I voted to close as too broad. That first question is just really really broad. I think all three make it too broad, but definitely the first.

thanks, boo

I'm not sure if that's total experience or experience per level.
I think that's total.

@Yuuki it's total.

3:17 PM
@NautArch same, 2 and 3 are definitely answerable and there are somewhat decent data sets available.

@Akixkisu Yeah, they even fit 'standard site questions' pretty well. I think we do need to keep them together for sake of clarity, but probably technically should be separated. The first question is way above our scope here, though.

@NautArch Huh. Well I don't see it as that broad honestly. With the data at hand, it would be trivial to answer in a very short amount of space.
The difficulty from my view seems to be in obtaining the data, not in providing it back as an answer.

@Rubiksmoose "In which countries it is more usual and how common is it in those countries?" In order to know that, you need to have market data for each country. Anecdotal evidence for commonality is useless.

@NautArch Yup. Agreed.

@Rubiksmoose And pulling that data together is NOT an RPG thing. It's a business thing.

3:24 PM
@NautArch That means it is going to be very difficult or impossible to find that exact data.

@Rubiksmoose Unless it does exist somewhere. There are companies whose business is in determining market data.
But this isn't the right place to ask that. It's about a business model, not about playing an RPG.

Kindof like that question asking how much people would pay to rent an RPG gaming room

@NautArch It might not be an RPG player thing, but it certainly is an aspect of RPGs. The RPG industry consists of many roles beyond player/GM. We also host questions on publishing and licensing which also don't speak to experience actually playing the game. But I also don't see how that objection makes this question Broad. You seem to be arguing that it is off-topic instead because it doesn't have to do with RPGs

GcL
@NautArch Seems like enough of a crossover for me. Most question of how to deal with a problem with other players are interpersonal skills questions, but we accept them here.
@G.Moylan "Would" is probably not an answerable question. Estimation of the average that people do pay to rent a suitable space for running a table top rpg for 6 people is an answerable question.

@GcL true

3:29 PM
@GcL I'll leave it to others, but for hard data that isn't totally unrelated to RPGs, this seems off topic. It's just hard financial data. I guess there could be someeone here who knows here to find it.
@GcL Yes, but again. A limited subset of data is not going to be reliable information to build a business plan from.
An answer not only has to answer it, but they're going to have show the pricing to support it.
But what one place charges in one country may be totally different than another.

GcL
Those seems like problems for the people writing answers.

@GcL Or it's an indication that this isn't the right place for the question.
There's also a real concern that the querent isn't aware of what a useful answer will be.

GcL
Is the perceived difficulty in answering a question criteria for exclusion?

@NautArch I'm with you up until you say that the problems you are seeing make this question not on-topic here, which I'm not sure I really understand.

@GcL I' not saying it's about difficulty, i'm saying this is the wrong place to ask a question about hardmarket data.
I still think the other two questions are on-topic and answerable here. I don't think the first one is.

GcL
3:35 PM
@NautArch What is hardmarket data?

@GcL hard data on market statistics

Proposal: Allow the question for now, maybe move the discussion to meta and make note of why such questions could be an issue. If such questions do become problematic later for the stack, then we could discuss new policy for auto-closing as off-topic.

@NautArch What difference do you see between the first and the other two questions?

GcL
@NautArch What is hard data? I'm having difficulty imagining what that looks like.

They are all market research questions, so I'm not sure I see any substantial difference. Am I missing something here?
FWIW, we've already probably crossed the line and this should likely be asked about on Meta.
(not that people can't continue to discuss it here)

3:38 PM
@Rubiksmoose first question requires sales/services data - and what constitutes 'more or less common'? How does a user answer that and what makes their answer useful/trustworthy? The 2nd and 3rd are directly answerable by folks here who have used these services.

@NautArch Those are certainly some valid improvements that can be made to the question. But what in there makes it off-topic?

GcL
As an answerer, I would probably state what is more common or less common. Either as an assumption or from a source. I imagine useful answers might have some sources from which an extrapolation is made similar to how /r/theydidthemath operates.

@Rubiksmoose AlthoughI guess technically they aren't asking ANY of those questions (as I write a meta), they're asking where to find this information.

Q: Are market research questions on topic here?

NautArchThis question came up recently and it's primary focus is to provide market research information to the querent to help them determine if this is a viable business. I'm not entirely sure all of the contents of that question are within our domain here. The first question: In which countries i...

@G.Moylan FYI, the question of whether a Twinned Spell has multiple Attack Rolls or not is something that I've seen hashed out multiple times prior, and there are a lot of Gish-like builds that very specifically depend on the "Twinned Spell → Two Attack Rolls" property when applied to spells like Booming Blade.
So if it's definitely the case that Twinned Spell does not confer multiple Attack Rolls, that breaks quite a few builds. ;)

3:54 PM
so you're saying that there's one or two melee attacks?
oh I see
phrasing didn't register in my head for a sec

@G.Moylan For a spell like Booming Blade, the common interpretation is that there's two melee attacks, not least of which because the spell itself says you have to make a Melee Attack as part of its description. If Twinning the spell didn't duplicate that part of the description, then it's not really duplicating the spell.

it just feels wrong that you would get an additional melee swing out of that.

Granted, that doesn't strictly mean that all other spells must follow that rule when Twinned, but it's definitely the case for Booming Blade.

"I get two targets, therefore I get to swing my sword again"

@Rubiksmoose you probably declined my flag, but this comment is part of the answer rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/74648/… could you please remove it?

3:57 PM
it's just weird. I get a magic spell can fork in midair, but swinging a sword "twice because magic says so" is weird to me

swinging a sword twice because magic says so is exactly how the ua artificer's extra attack works

I mean, when a Dex-Sorcerer is out-melee-ing the Fighter by upcasting Shadow Blade and then Twin-casting Booming Blade with a Quickened Green Flame Blade, I can certainly understand the trepidation. ;)
(Although that is 3 Sorcery Points per turn, or 1 if you don't bother with the Quickened spell)

at higher levels 3 isn't that bad

@Akixkisu ah I see! I've removed. In cases like that sometimes it can be helpful to type a custom message to let us know why it is NLN (or whatever). I didn't catch the bit at the bottom (and we don't always have the time to go through and read the question, answer, and all the comments thoroughly to try to figure it out).

it just feels wrong. idk, I guess I typed faster than my brain was processing the specifics of what I was saying

4:01 PM
@Rubiksmoose no problem, I frequently do that when it is unclear, just forgot to do that in this case (and it does look very relevant).

Tangent: does anyone else get just a twinge uncomfortable using the term "Gish"? It feels like I'm unwittingly using a Slur, though to what I have no idea. =/
> You ----ing GISH!
Nobody else feel that?

well now that you've said it I'm going to
thanks, Roko

Oops.

@Akixkisu No worries, and it does look like a case where it would have been fairly easy to spot. In the future, if you feel strongly you (I think) can just throw another flag up on there with a custom message saying "actually this is why this should be removed"

@Xirema I've felt that way as well. And I don't even know what gish means. :|

4:05 PM
@JohnP It's a caste of Githyanki known in D&D Lore for their "Spellsword" abilities, and has since become a shorthand term for any D&D character that tries to blend Spellcasting and Martial prowess in their combat.

@JohnP In case you are interested then: What is the etymology of the term 'Gish'?

@Sdjz Thank you.

Though it means skilled in the language of origin, right?

@Xirema Punchy McSpellFist

Also, for various reasons, Paladins and Rangers don't usually "count" when discussing what is and is not a Gish.

4:11 PM
In Githyanki it means skilled, but as someone from the outside, you could use it as a derogative.

Are bards considered Gish? (Gishy? Gishish?)

I think part of the implication is that a "Spellsword" is

- As good or nearly as good at their spellcasting as their more traditional spellcasting counterparts, BUT
- Fights in melee combat most of the time
So while Paladins, Rangers, Eldritch Knights, etc., might be potential examples, the more clear-cut examples are more like Bladesingers and Swords/Valor Bards.
(Maybe the Stone Sorcerer that was introduced as Unearthed Arcana?)

@Xirema It should encompass most characters that fall into the "Fighter/Mage" style

4:26 PM
@MikeQ Geralt.

in my head gish means specifically a combo of arcane casting class and martial class

Q: Does this house rule, for determining hit point maximum, make characters weaker than RAW?

OmlukainRecently my friend had mentioned that he was using a house rule for his players to calculate their hit point maximum, which I am both curious & hesitant to try with my players. His way of determining hit points is (Str mod + Con mod + 4) per level, with a minimum of 1 per level (including first ...

@JohnP He's not that magically competent though. He knows the equivalent of some cantrips, but nothing major
@G.Moylan maybe some level 1 spells
he's a far superior swordsman

@G.Moylan True, but you can build the spells to be as much/more as the swordsmanship if you choose. It is a much more limited array of spells than a typical caster, though.
I keep thinking I want to play it through again just to get all the gwent decks, but man...such a long process.

@JohnP i had absolutely zero interest in gwent in any of the witcher games.

4:42 PM
@NautArch I got interested in it during my...2nd? 3rd? playthrough. It's a fun diversion.
hey @Ash. How is it having husband around?

user15026
It's lovely! Today we are being supremely lazy so far and it is amazing.

Cool!

@NautArch good thing it's only in the third game, then :P

4:59 PM
@G.Moylan I thought there wa a gwent in witcher 2? (i never played one)

@NautArch 2 had dice poker, boxing, and arm wrestling as mini games

@G.Moylan well then. I definitely still don't have any interest in it in 3 :)

@NautArch The mini-games were among the highlights of the game

5:18 PM
@MikeQ I just couldn't get into it. ALso skipped the boxing sidequest.

5:32 PM
@NautArch Boxing sidequest was jacked, the mechanics were not that great.

5:57 PM
@JohnP I'm almost done with Shadow of the Tomb Raider. That game has been a lot of fun.
Debating about what game to pick up next. Having a hard time getting FO4 DLC because it's more expensive than when i got the game itself :)

@NautArch I'd avoid it. IIRC, the FO4 DLC wasn't particularly attention-grabbing.
Although I haven't touched Nuka World yet.
Far Harbor wasn't that great and Automatron just added a bunch of workshop stuff and a paper-thin story quest.

@Yuuki really? I thought far harbor was supposed to be good?

@NautArch I mean, it's probably one of the better DLCs but FO4's aren't that great to begin with.
So pretty low bar to clear.

@Yuuki good to know to definitely wait until they're at 75%+ off

If you really enjoyed the base FO4 game, then maybe consider picking up Far Harbor and/or Nuka World but you weren't satisfied with vanilla FO4, the DLCs aren't going to change your mind.
It's just more of the same.
Unlike New Vegas, which I contend has the best DLC in any game I've played.

6:11 PM
@Yuuki I think I was one of the few satisfied. I enjoyed it, but definitely not paying more for DLC than original game.
Right now, debating between We Happy Few and Monster Hunter World.

I'm a bit biased when I say MHW.

is it an rpg?

Monster Hunter is my favorite gaming franchise, I think I've spent at least 100-200 hours on every entry since MHFU.

I don'tt hink I fully understand it's mechanics

@NautArch Not really.

6:12 PM
@Yuuki Is it single player?

It's not an RPG in the sense that you level a character.
@NautArch You can play it solo but you don't have to.

@Yuuki I prefer single-player

In Monster Hunter, the core gameplay loop is you taking quests/hunts targeting a specific monster, you kill or capture said monster, you use that monster's parts to make better weapons and armor, which enables you to hunt more monsters.
Your character power derives solely from the equipment you make from other monsters and your accumulated skill.

@Yuuki hmm. I can't tell if I like the sound of that or not :)

It's a very grindy game but unlike most grinders I've played, I actually enjoy the grinding part of the game.
Monster AI means each hunt will be subtly different from the last.

6:16 PM
One more thing: it's almost all boss battles

A lot of skill comes not just from knowing how to use your particular weapon type but also learning monster tells.

@Yuuki Is it more interesting in terms of the hunt than 'hunting' some of Witcher 3 monster quests?

@NautArch I haven't played too much Witcher 3 so I can't really compare.

The hunt and grind is the core gameplay loop.

But tracking isn't a major part of the gameplay, though MHW does add some tracking mechanics and makes it overall easier.

6:18 PM
I've also been debating if one of the openworld explortion games would be good to play with my 7 year old (No Man's Sky / Subnatical/ Astroneer)

MHW is probably the most newcomer-friendly entry in the series so if you were ever interested in the franchise, MHW is probably the best entry point.

@MikeQ Imean, hunt and grind seem the core gameplay of most games.

@NautArch I love Subnautica and Astroneer, although Subnautica is singleplayer only.

@Yuuki really? I thought it was multi. Dang. That ones out :(

Subnautica is fantastic

6:19 PM
@NautArch Er, to clarify... For MH, the grindyness is at least polished, and meant to be fun and exciting. It's not just grind as filler.

Astroneer, I think, is more fun for kids since there's less jump-scare horror.

It has some performance issues though

@Yuuki Does No Man's Sky have jump scare? Or just subnautica?

@NautArch Subnautica does, sort of

There's no active hostile mobs in Astroneer, unlike Subnautica.

6:20 PM
is it simple/fun enough for a 7 year old? (astroneer)

I personally think so.

The vast majority of our gaming is Rocket League/Lego City/Sonic All Star Racing (PC man's mariokart)

You might have to help them out in regards to planning their first planetary journey, since rockets only have limited capacity.
But I think one of the recent updates this year made planning easier.

@NautArch Point-and-click adventure/puzzle games can be fun activities for parent-kid bonding. May want to look into those.

Child of Light is a good parent-child experience, I think.

6:22 PM
I dunno. Maybe too tactical for a young child player.

@MikeQ Hmm. We'd tried Trine, but that was a bit over their pay grade.
I was doing most of the puzzle solving and just trying to direct them where to go.

@NautArch No no, I mean point-and-click puzzles, those deriving from Myst and older LucasArts games and such.
(Myst itself is probably too obtuse for young children, but there are many others that expand and polish on the premise)

@MikeQ I really wish they'd remake Fools Errand. Puzzles still above their paygrade, but that game was amazing.

@MikeQ It's actually specifically designed around being played by a parent and child. The firefly/faerie is intended to be played by the child, IIRC.
Or maybe the parent, I can't recall.

@Yuuki I just dono't want it to devolve back to me playing the Trine wizard and drawing boxes/lines to solve everything.

6:27 PM
There's a point-and-click puzzle series called The Room. Kinda short, but the puzzles were clever. Unrelated to the Tommy Wiseau movie. I'd recommend those for parent-child co-op.

@MikeQ I second the recommendation of Tommy Wiseau movies for parent-child co-op!

Do not involve Tommy Wiseau's "The Room" for any co-op activity with young children

oh hey mike

I think Minecraft's one of those games that appeals to a very wide demographic of gamers, from young to old and "casual" to "hardcore" (as much as I dislike those labels)

@NautArch There's also the Sam & Max series, although you should give it a parent-scan beforehand, since some of the humor and themes are a bit mature-ish

6:30 PM
@kviiri My group of friends and I do a modpack run-through every other year.

Portal 2?
co-op mode

@MikeQ yeah, i've heard really good things about most of those.

@G.Moylan I don't really like Portal 2 co-op mode mostly because every level inevitably ends up with one person figuring it out and then griping at how the other person doesn't understand the instructions they're giving them.

@NautArch TL;DR Ideally you want a game with puzzle difficulties within the cognitive scope of a typical 7-year old, but just tricky enough that they'll ask you for help (if/when needed)

@G.Moylan Puzzles aren't good co-op, imo.

6:32 PM
@Yuuki that can happen with any co-op puzzle game, though

@Yuuki It's like when mom tried to tell me how to tie my shoelaces, using only words I had no idea what they meant in the context.

@kviiri "what's an aglet?"

@MikeQ kinda, but honestly just looking for a fun game to play with him. Have a 5 year old as well, but harder to find something that she can play, too.
I did love playing Fool's Errand with my dad when it came out.

@G.Moylan also @NautArch mentioned some puzzle games, so I thought I'd recommend one I've played and enjoyed

@NautArch Ah, so 2+ controllers? Hard to wrong with Minecraft.

6:34 PM
@NautArch If you want an addictive, simple and broad-appeal game, I think Peggle is pretty good

The last puzzle game that I played and enjoyed was Baba Is You.
Which doesn't have co-op, IIRC.

And yeah, Minecraft is definitely a good one if you want something a bit more creative. It's like a huge virtual lego set.

there can be some scary stuff in Minecraft, fyi. Getting jumped by a spider is definitely unpleasant. There's also a Hell analogue.

@G.Moylan I think you can play in creative mode which doesn't have spiders or other enemies?
Not sure if it has the Netherworld. Or whatever it's called

I'm currently playing a Minecraft modpack designed around playing in Peaceful mode.

6:36 PM
The Nether-stuff is a bit creepy, but seems to be tame enough for kids

It's called athe Nether and yes there's a Creative mode, there's also a Peaceful mode for the normal game but that kinda defeats the point

If you're not playing on Peaceful, I suppose the Ghast's sounds could freak you out.
@G.Moylan Depends on what you think the point is.

@Yuuki that sound. "WHERE IS IT COMING FROM?!?"

@G.Moylan It's coming from inside the house, because someone forgot to install light fixtures

@Yuuki the "Story mode" of the game is designed around you defeating the dragon and the Wither

6:37 PM
For me, I play Survival to see what I can build without spawning stuff in.

@G.Moylan The last time I played Minecraft, there wasn't any mode with enemies or such, and I still had good fun with it.

I don't particularly care about the "story".

I reckon having a shared creative outlet with the kid(s) is fun enough on it own.

I've played Minecraft since it was in Alpha, and I've enjoyed it really regardless of what "mode" it's in.
But the game does have an "end" technically in defeating the dragon and wither. You can obviously play beyond that , but a lot of the struggle of the game is in finding and fighting those two

@TheDyingOfLight By the way, it looks like you've got some reopen votes. Looking forward to the analysis of your homebrew system.

6:39 PM
It kinda freaks me out that late teenagers are old enough to have childhood nostalgia about Minecraft.

@kviiri yeah it's bizarre. That and the fact that people were born after the 9/11 attack in the US and now only read about it in history books

I thought of this when I heard a group of teenagers on a train talk about their childhood nostalgia towards Minecraft. :)

argh. Reading a review of "we happy few" that compare it to bioshock. Which I didn't enjoy (i think i'm in the minority there.)

Bioshock has strong points and weak points throughout the whole series

@G.Moylan When someday my grandchildren work on their school essays and ask me where I was when I heard the news of the 9/11 attacks, I can truthfully reply that I was out in the field, harvesting potatoes. I might also mention that it was pretty much the only time I did that, but it'd ruin the fun.

6:41 PM
@kviiri heck I'd try to keep that in the story as much as possible

@kviiri I was waking up on 9/12 when I heard news of the 9/11 attacks.

hooray for time zones!

Not really, I just spent all my time with my nose in books.
So I literally went the whole day without finding out what happened.
Thought it was odd that we went home earlier, but whatever, The Bridge to Terabithia was getting to a good part.

I used to go to this public farming plot where you could drop your kids on Summer days if they liked garderning, they'd get free meals and stuff to do, plus of course a share of the harvest. I recall potatoes being so plentiful they just told us to take all we wanted.
So nay, I did not lead a particularly rural experience --- more like agrarian themed Summer activities for us suburban kids.

ah gotcha. Yeah it was weird for me too. I didn't really understand the gravity if what people were telling me until I saw the buildings on fire on the TV

6:46 PM
I don't think our teachers showed us the TV news that day but again, nose in books, they could've shown us and I might not have been paying attention at all.

I recall being just old enough to understand that this was serious business. I'm not sure if I thought I'd still think about its impact twenty years from then.

yeah, I was 13 and I saw it on the news when I got home from school in the afternoon

I was in school at the time and they brought out a TV. I think I understood how serious it was but especially because I had been on top of one of them towers a couple months earlier.

they didn't show us in school but I definitely saw it at home. I just remember not "getting it." I didn't even know what the World Trade Center was and I had just been in New York

and as I recall I watched the news for a few minutes and then I called my best friend to make sure they knew

6:49 PM
then like I said I saw the buildings on fire and people panicking and I started to understand that it was a big deal. I've only really come to appreciate the severity of it within the past couple years though, as I've done my own reading on the subject and seen the aftermath unfold

9/11's had a pretty long tail as far as repercussions of terrorist cats goes

Q: How should characters be punished for failing faction missions?

StuperUserThere is a faction mission in Waterdeep for the Harpers to: However, the Harper in our party has failed in a way that is not obvious to them (the player or the character). How can/should the faction punish the character failure? Unforeseen consequences, the removal of privileges, being set on...

To pivot back to Minecraft, the continuous update loop of video games means a kid might play the same game from pre-school to adulthood without ever being old-fashioned. I was the subject of much ridicule at school for having a hobbyist interest in games less than a decade old instead of playing WoW like the rest.
(or rather, for refusing to shut up about it, for that was the nature of my social awkwardness back then)

Whoa
When did the question filter get updated?

@williamporter Question filter?

6:52 PM
Y'know

oh when you try to ask and it suggests things that are similar?

The newest, active, featured tabs
and crap
Now we've got that nice filter button next to it

I wonder if that's what they tried to implement the other day that crashed the site

6:54 PM
@Yuuki yeah it's at the top now

GcL
@Rubiksmoose I was in a morning anthropology course that had the live news on the auditorium projector. Front row seats to a nightmare as the 2nd plane hit. Really terrifying part was how many of our friends enlisted in the following months.
