Q: Scientist Couple Raises Alient Baby

user117551Can't think of the name of a science fiction movie where a scientist couple secretly raises a female alien baby. The baby has a tail, and grows into an adult in a matter of months (or weeks). During adolescence, she starts becoming aggressive toward the woman scientist. IIRC, it was a competition...

Q: What American film was mentioned in Cixin Liu's The Dark Forest?

Invisible TrihedronIn The Dark Forest, p. 298, Cixin Liu's character, Rey Diaz, described a dead man's switch. Rey Diaz brought down his left hand and covered the cradle with his sleeve. "I was taught this wonderful idea not by an expert in nuclear strategy but by an American film. In it, a man has one of those...

Q: What is the name of this Sci-Fi Circular Interface Seen on Computers and Holograms?

SeeDerekEngineerMany Sci-Fi movies and video games have this circular interface used on touch-screens and interfaces. What is this structure's name? Who first designed it/where did it come from? Is there a math or computer science concept behind it that influences its structure, or is it just to "look cool"...

Q: Does a specific character write the Cosmere books?

StormblessedThe Ars Arcanum section that is in most Cosmere books is known to be written by Khriss, as shown in Arcanum Unbounded. Is there some specific Worldsinger or god or Shard or something who in-universe is the one writing all the actual books, or is the explanation just that it’s a book in our unive...

Thee_bearded1I remember this book. Early 2000’s is when I read it. The book was about a teenage boy who turns out to be part alien (I think). He was really good at gymnastics his eyes did this crazy dilating thing that would freak out his friend and he had a motorcycle by the end of the book. An invasion occu...

Shouldn't we not vote to delete a bad self-answer that is an actual answer? amflare did that
But it still could be valuable

From the review page is it obvious that it's a self-answer?

4:14 AM
@DavidW Not extremely
Like it doesn't say specifically it's one
But you can see the question
And the user who wrote the question
I guess if the question were too long you'd have to purposefully check by scroling down

user117558There's this cartoon show and in one episode they get trapped in a game show. The host is some weird alien that stands on a floating disk. The only way out is if they win the show.

Q: Did the Jedi Order use corporal punishment?

user117559I just read a fanfiction, where a padawan is spanked for disobeying. Do you think this is realistic? Was Coporal punishment allowed?

Q: Why doesn’t Shrek the Third start with a storybook opening?

Alex DownsAll the other Shrek films start with a storybook opening. But Shrek the Third doesn’t. Why?

@Jenayah I've tried it on mobile once

@Gallifreyan still playing?

Nope

11:21 AM
Why, do you play?

Yeah I've been playing a bit (like, two weeks?), was wondering if anyone would be up for trade or something
No idea how this stuff works though :P

Q: What does "D.Wiz, X.J. (sorc), S. of Mag. Q." stand for in the Harry Potter: Film Wizardry book?

Q: VHS animated movie forest where a scientist and people collecting flowers that they took to a tower

user117564I think there was a scientist with some others that wanted to collect some flowers, and brought them back in a tower. I remember and a guy with wheelchair. It was not western or anime, I think it had bad graphics, it reminded of Smurfs.

What's new and exciting?

1:36 PM
Mmmmh... Something's in the works, but I'm the kind not to speak about some stuff until it's done, don't wanna jinx it and all :D
Other than that it's a rainy day. Car crashed on the tramway line this morning so I had to walk and take the bus, which doesn't stop right before my workplace.
Arrived late and soaked, always a nice way to begin the day hahahah
Nothing really exciting, though.
You? :)

Иво НедевIn the episode where they are finally able to put together Merlin's weapon and send it to the Ori galaxy, Vala points out that she's pretty sure the one part that didn't make it into the rig is the time-delay device. This means they switch the weapon on in our galaxy and send it via the Stargat...

Q: Was Dama Fortuna from Fiona’s Prologue the witch that Fiona mentioned in Shrek 1?

Alex DownsIn Shrek 1, Fiona said, “When I was a little girl, a witch cast a spell on me.” Some people think she was on about the “witch” aka fortune teller, Dama Fortuna from the deleted scene “Fiona’s Prologue.” Is that true or not?

4:22 PM
@SQB agreed, especially in light of your edit. @TheLethalCarrot, care to explain the Leave Closed vote?

4:37 PM
@Randal'Thor inspired by the Shrek opening question?

@SQB I suspect people are voting for the user not the post :-/
Especially given the lightning-fast Reopen review with three Leave Closed votes in under 2 minutes.

One of which was later changed into a Reopen vote *ahem*

@Jenayah ;-)

@Valorum As you know, I'm not very knowledgeable about the Star Wars franchise. Sure, I could probably find the answer on the web, but SE is supposed to be a place where popular questions can get well-supported answers (in contrast to the dross elsewhere on the web), regardless of Googlability. I suspect a lot of people will wonder the same thing, and if this post helps them to find the right answer fast, then ... mission accomplished. — Rand al'Thor ♦ 3 mins ago
@Randal'Thor eeeeeeh... While not wrong, this misses out the point of "show your research" though. It's fine if one doesn't get anything on Google, but should still say it.
It's not about the SW thing. I don't really care about that

I've asked lots of questions which I could have answered myself but preferred to let someone else have the fun of researching and answering.

It's about the "sure, you can ask every on-topic, not too broad, clear question, even if it's already answered somewhere else on the net, or is clearly trying to whore rep and badges." That, sure. But in any case, yeah, one is supposed to show research
oh, that reminds me of another thing, sec

@Jenayah I wasn’t haha

Q: Why don't Rogue One and Solo have opening crawls?

Rand al'ThorThe opening crawl is one of the most distinctive feature of Star Wars films. But only the numbered episodes have it, not Rogue One or Solo which are also part of the Star Wars franchise. Why is this?

It's not about screwing reviews.

@closevoters how the duck is this unclear? — Stormblessed 42 secs ago

To whoever voted to close as too broad, WTF? How many movies fitting that scenario can you quote? oO — Jenayah 1 min ago

@Stormblessed because Fortuna isn’t a character in Shrek just his made up name for something he’s trying to make canon
Also using duck or WTF is not exactly fit for course on SE and probably violates the CoC (though I’m not 100%) if it does. You can disagree with users without using “strong” language

yeah I saw it got edited
my bad I guess, didn't mean that as rude towards the closevoter, rather the WTDuckness of the movie

Aye, I understand but still the comment stood fine without the WTF

Anyone know anything about the upcoming Dune films?

@fredsbend @Seamusthedog perhaps? I don't know, I'm just pinging you because you asked a couple Dune questions, so maybe you're following updates on the next movies

I guess it's slated for 2020 sometime. An article a few months ago said they started shooting. space.com/new-dune-movie-adaptation-begins-filming.html
I guess I know as much as the next guy, so maybe I'm just feeling for opinions.

Asking for opinions in chat is perfectly okay

I'm recently a fan, but I'd say I'm quickly becoming a big one. I'm also frequently disappointed in feature films these days.
I want to get excited for it, but i don't want to be burned.

Q: Was it coincidence that Game of Thrones and Endgame ended in a similar way and were released within weeks of each other?

Randy ZeitmanWas it coincidence that Game of Thrones and Endgame ended in a similar way and were released within weeks of each other? They both ended the same way ... with a group of 'avengers' only able to win because they were able to completely delete the opponents.

I'm seeing Javier Bardem as Stilgar. That will be interesting, in a good way. I'm kind of tired of Jason Momoa (as Duncan Idaho). If they can kick off this movie into a series, Idaho becomes a very big character. Timothée Chalamet is cast as Paul. I'd say he looks exactly as I'd imagine Paul Atreides, but I've never seen him in anything. I like seeing unknown talent.

Villeneuve says he's committed to doing two movies, so he doesn't have to chop the story too much. That's good. I bet they'll split the two right after Paul and Jessica are taken in with the Fremen. There's a natural pause in the story there, where three years pass and Paul marries and becomes a proper Fremen and poised to become their leader.
As for Villeneuve, I've seen only one of his films listed here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_Villeneuve#Filmography Blade Runner
Idk, it was okay. I didn't really understand the first one either, so maybe that's the problem.
