Q: How do I stop my classmates from overusing class property?

OspreyMy classmates simply love doodling on the whiteboard. Using our class markers. Not only do I find it useless and annoying (it often causes chaos with what they write) it uses up ink. Just a week after we’ve bought the markers, they run out. A month later, the entire set is deprived of ink. My cla...

Q: How to ask for landlord's address to be included on lease

mastifftrentonI'm looking to rent a basement suite. The landlord showed me the lease he had written (he argued the standard one provided by the government is too long and complicated, which I tend to agree). His lease doesn't have his address on it. If it comes to legal matters, I would need his address to ser...

Q: How to talk to a friend that just lost an eye

TevlicMy friend just lost an eye on an accident and I don't know how to deal with it or what to tell him. He seems to have a good sense of humor about it but I can only imagine how bad it feels. Is there any specific stuff I should be aware of, or topics I should avoid?

Q: Friend gave away my stuff - how to move forward from this?

SwirronI have a collection that happens to match the theme of two recent parties. This collection I’ve been growing and adding to from a young age. It has some moderate monetary value. It’s value is mostly sentimental, though it’s not my most precious possession. For party 1 I volunteered to bring the ...

@ExtrovertedMainMan Heh you just need functional ears

6:59 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ ahem (raises eyebrow) :)

There was this comedian that said the best way to deal with such unfortunate and uncontrollable events is to just mock their misery out of existence

It might be important to consider that I am deaf :) I understand it is meant as a joke, and I can take a joke.

Now, I'd understand if someone is upset and they would be even more upset if you don't tiptoe around them, but that feels like trying to ignore the issue and having to accept the bitter reality in the end, at least to me. I came to this realization and it's how I dealt with my condition, and it's the best thing I ever did
After that other thing I did the other day, and that thing I did to that guy, and what I said to that woman at that situation, and some other things.
@ElizB Ow. Um, sorry

Would you like some assistance taking that foot out of your mouth, @M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ?

I'm too cheeky to be doing that
ESPECIALLY in front of you, wizard

7:07 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Well, if you can fit an entire foot in your cheek... I'm not going to disturb that.

Only if it's your baby foot, cutie :p
Ow yuck
How's the knee doing?

Look, I didn't stick my foot in your mouth; you stuck your own foot in your mouth.
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ It mostly bends. A bit sore, healing. Scabbing. A bit unpleasant.

OK then, how are the pants doing

They have ceased to be. They are ex-pants.

Maybe you can ask on expantriates.SE on what to do with them
Bah dum tis
ssssssss

7:10 PM
...what did I do to deserve this?

Provoked a dog?

Be younger

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ No worries, I know the intent wasn't malicious. Just a friendly reminder that people who have been born without senses do exist and we get by just fine :)

@ElizB Well, the joke was about the very sentence in the title, nothing else. Sign language is pretty awesome in itself.
And I do admire such people more than the normal person. It's not a self-righteous false sense of sympathy, mind you.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Yeah, I completely understand. I think it's funny, heh. It made me think of how society views the norm as "100% functioning senses" and how I'm just not the norm and now the guy in the question is not 100% normal as per society's views.
Are they your inspiration?

7:24 PM
@ElizB Well, the norm lost its magic to me long ago

@ElizB I was going to tell him that he was fine as long as @El'endiaStarman doesn't hear him, but I was unsure about how in taste that would be.

@ElizB They're usually way calmer, more calculated, and wiser than the average person. Or rather, "normal" person

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ huh, interesting thought. How come?

It's an observation. Correlation doesn't imply causation and blah blah blah
But I'm sure there is more to it.

Maybe our experience dealing with people that come up to us and wave their hands in our face and tell us (loudly) "CAN YOU UNDERSTAND ME??"
I've had that happen to me more than once

7:27 PM
And sometimes, the fewer things you take for granted, the more meaning you can make out of life. Now that one is also one personal lesson I learned.
@Mith you should learn it too. What is wrong with you

I laugh about that kind of thing often.
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Good philosophy. :)

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I know, I know

@Mithrandir self-righteous glare Juvenile ignorance shakes head

Hehe :) Sometimes I jump into those kinds of jokes about people who lose senses for whatever reason and go "ahem, I'm deaf, are ya making jokes about my kind?" and everyone gets their foot in their mouth.

How much younger are you, again? 16 months?

7:29 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ *pats @M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ on the head*

HOW DARE YOU

Oh my.

@ElizB Well to be fair, there are two types of jokes when it comes to things like that and I never try to do bad jokes. Just because people are laughing doesn't mean they're mocking. But I guess the guy would have every right to do so
@Alex You suck at stirring up the pot
A good provocative message would have entailed 16 all-caps messages.

He couldn't get the ladle out of the drawer.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Yeah, same here. Just thought I'd stir up something here :)

7:33 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ It was between that and "Now, now, children, settle down."

I saw that the intent wasn't malicious and I just stirred the pot, I guess

@Mithrandir English please. We don't speak Rowlingese in this chat

Better remove @Alex quickly, then.

haha rowlingese I like that

Rowlingese? Is that what it's called when you can edit your messages from a while back to pretend that what you say now is really what you meant all along?

7:35 PM
Guideline: If it's Mith, or a message directed at Mith, it's malicious unless proven otherwise.

What did @Mithrandir24601 do that he receives your wrath?

Mith's Marvelously Malicious Messages

Misdirection is yet another juvenile technique you've mastered.

@Alex Sounds like something the Weasleys would sell.

I feel hungry.

7:37 PM
Eat Mithrandir.

Talk about a non-sequitar.

@Alex Well, his foot wasn't particularly delicious, unlike most other baby feet
And he has a curse that makes dogs chase him
I don't want THAT

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Should I ask how many baby feet you've eaten?

No, you shouldn't.

Okay, how many?

7:40 PM
In retrospect, having M.A.R. and Alex in the same room was probably a huge mistake.

Should have seen me with Jim. o.o When I was your age. O.O
In another note, this guy never not makes sense:
Discussions of the "show research" close reason tend to be skewed by the fiction that the requirement exists to help answerers avoid replicating work that the question asker has already done. In fact, it exists (and is hugely popular) because it gives close voters an extremely convenient way to reject a question without having to assess the question's inherent value and interest. The point is to get rid of gallons and gallons of bathwater as quickly as possible—and if babies occasionally get tossed out in the course of the operation (and they do), that's really the babies' parents' fault. — Sven Yargs yesterday
@Alex Did you just use the grown up privilege

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Am I grown up?

Theoretically

@Mithrandir I was here first.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ But I am normal! Are you suggesting I'm not? :o (╮°-°)╮┳━━┳ ( ╯°□°)╯ ┻━━┻

7:43 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ So I used a theoretical privilege?

@Mithrandir24601 It's highly debatable whether someone that can tolerate having the same name as Mith-no-numbers is normal.
@Alex Na-uh
1 min ago, by M.A.R. ಠ_ಠ
Theoretically

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ If I wasn't so obsessed with my name I'd change it to Mithrandir.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ So, that's the polite version of 'yes, you [well me, but I'm narrating this as from your point of view :P ] are not normal'? :P
@Alex Mithralexir?

I dunno, my account is just 101 on IPS.

When did being normal become so desirable?
@Mithrandir24601 In another chatroom it has already been asserted that I am Mithrandir.

7:46 PM
@Alex Normal distributions are curvy ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

@Alex Ahh, sometimes normality can be a great desire. At other times, normality is boring
@Alex Looking at the rooms you're in, I can see why

in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Oct 9 '18 at 19:34, by Alex
@Jenayah Alex=Mithrandir=TheLethalCarrot=Edlorhiad

@Mithrandir24601 But at all times, normality is a nightmare in a chemistry exam.

@Mithrandir24601 Well I overlap with Mithrandir in a few of them... but then again Mithrandir is in just about every room.

I think YOU asserted that. That's cheating

7:48 PM
@Alex First two, maybe; second two, nope
@Alex Ahh, but it's whether or not the numberless one is active in those rooms

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ But I didn't just invent it out of nothing. I was interpreting an earlier remark by someone else:
in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Oct 9 '18 at 19:23, by Jenayah
oh wait no, that jet lag is confirmed for you Mith but I don't know about Alex

"the numberless one" AW COME THE HECK ON. Why am I the only one who realizes he's definitely evil?

@Mithrandir24601 Is numberless like soulless?

Dunno but I had to come up with some way to differentiate between us

You could have gone with "evil", as M.A.R. suggests.

7:51 PM
It's so obvious I know I can blame him if a tsunami hits Atlantis.

But why? Us wizards mods wizards have to stick together sometimes

He's manipulating you

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ That's what you think mwahahahaha

Or maybe manipulating him is what you think you're doing
I'm having a sudden urge to make nested "you think"s

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ We came close to a Hurricane Mithrandir a few times:
Hurricane Mitch was the second-deadliest Atlantic hurricane on record, causing over 11,000 fatalities in Central America, with over 7,000 occurring in Honduras alone due to the catastrophic flooding it wrought, due to the slow motion of the storm. It was the deadliest hurricane in Central America, surpassing Hurricane Fifi–Orlene, which killed slightly fewer people there in 1974. The thirteenth named storm, ninth hurricane, and third major hurricane of the 1998 Atlantic hurricane season, Mitch formed in the western Caribbean Sea on October 22, and after drifting through extremely favorable conditions...
Hurricane Maria was a deadly Category 5 hurricane that devastated Dominica, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico in September 2017. It is regarded as the worst natural disaster on record to affect those islands and is also the deadliest Atlantic hurricane since Jeanne in 2004. The tenth-most intense Atlantic hurricane on record and the most intense tropical cyclone worldwide in 2017, Maria was the thirteenth named storm, eighth consecutive hurricane, fourth major hurricane, second Category 5 hurricane, and deadliest storm of the hyperactive 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. At its peak, t...
Hurricane Michelle was the fifth costliest tropical cyclone in Cuban history and strongest of the 2001 Atlantic hurricane season. The thirteenth named storm and seventh hurricane that year, Michelle developed from a tropical wave that had traversed into the western Caribbean Sea on October 29; the wave had initially moved off the coast of Africa 13 days prior. In its early developmental stages, the depression meandered over Nicaragua, later paralleling the Mosquito Coast before intensifying into tropical storm intensity on November 1; Michelle was upgraded to hurricane strength the following day...

7:55 PM
Hurricane Onebox

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Or at least you think you have an urge to do so.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I was just trying to push your comments out of sight.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I know the feeling

Hey, Mith Master of Scripts, maybe you have a script that can automatically post a bunch of oneboxes after every message from M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ?

Sorry.

8:11 PM
@Alex Oh, teaming up with HIM now, I see
You made a grave mistake, um, dweller.
Alex sounds like a dweller's name.

What is a dweller?

Like you know, they enter a time portal and end up in a medieval weird ass world and suddenly they're supposed to be the protagonist. Or everyone pretends they are.

I would never be a protagonist.

Inorite, those guys suck.
@Mith is a protagonist.

I'm pretty sure I'm always the antagonist.

8:19 PM
Yeah right.

Oooh, a story with only antagonists. Sounds interesting.

@Alex Only if Jar Jar Binks here is an antagonist
OK, I going to my villainous slumber. Night

Now I can get back to the answer I was being distracted from finishing.

Q: How to respond to people asking you to 'like' more

EpicnoobIt happens fairly often: someone in the family buys a 'cool new thing', and posts pictures of it on social media like Whatsapp. Sometimes something interesting pops up that deserves a comment from me, but usually it is something I do not really care about. Now I'm being asked by family to 'like'...

8:43 PM
@Alex See: A Song of Ice and Fire or Malazan book of the Fallen

@Mithrandir24601 My time on Science Fiction & Fantasy has scared me away from the first one at least.

@Alex aSoIaF isn't perfect (my view is that the books could be condensed a bit, really) but it's got a good plot so far (the author hasn't published anything in years and seems to want more and more books in the series, so I'm not sure if we'll see the end). I disagree with a lot of people on SFF about the TV show at least
Malazan though just keeps getting better and better. By the half-way point, I considered it the best epic fantasy I've read
