@bwDraco That X1 question was rather fortuitous for me... we just got some devices in that have that exact slot on them.

GUYS THE SEVER IS STILL DOWN
Ah no it just recovered

@rahuldottech <3 :D

morning

8:35 AM
@rahuldottech your face seems to be down...

@JourneymanGeek It's not: xn--9ck.co
wait were you cracking a second grade joke

Well glad to see you got it...
Also your url is in punycode

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I know
easier to type unless I'm on mobile
On mobile I have a shortcut for the whole URL

Xn-9ck is hardly funny

@JourneymanGeek I know, I'll figure something out
I also have no idea what I should host on there.

8:48 AM
Which is always a useful thing to decide before buying a domain

I did tell him to go for fias.co

the irony of that is rather nice

One vote more til repcap :o

A: What computer port is this?

Michael FrankIt's used for an ethernet adapter. This range of laptop is too thin to put a full sized RJ-45 port in, so they use this port to extend out. If you didn't receive one in the box, you should be able to buy one from Lenovo directly. Part Name: ThinkPad Ethernet Extension Adapter Gen 2 Part Number:...

Oh, it's HNQ.
lols

@DavidPostill I looked into it. Unavailable
Redirects to ma.tt
@JourneymanGeek nah this is fun

9:05 AM
fun until it's time for domain renewal and there's 30 domains all wants $20 for the next year!

@MichaelFrank I drop the ones that I haven't managed to find a use for within a year

@MichaelFrank hah. Also since you basically can subdomain all the things ...
Hence nearly all my stuff being on one domain

@JourneymanGeek meh
oh btw it doesn't matter if the link you click on is in punycode, since the browser will still show the unicode version

anyone know what snore toast is?
its appeared in my startmenu

Toast is that notification thing isn't it?
so I guess it'd make that go to sleep?

9:11 AM
Also, neither SE chat nor reddit text boxes will accept a URL with a unicode domain name for the markdown link syntax
> A command line application capable of creating Windows Toast notifications.
@djsmiley2k yes
@djsmiley2k not really lol
I'm really angry that someone snatched rahul.dev before I could
@Burgi It's a part of KDE apparently

i don't remember installing anything that needed it

hmmm...
nope
its been installed as part of a laravel site

@rahuldottech how dare they!

9:43 AM
Oh my god Quora is cancer
They can't answer a single question without inserting a dozen unrelated images into the text
Lmao, look at this HN discussion on Theranos from 2013: news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6349349
> It's odd how little information is provided about the actual new technologies behind this.
> it's weird how the founders' background is all about "dropped out from here" and "dropped out from there". Is dropping out an achievement?
> Strangely designed web-site. When you open it you don't understand what they provide. Is it a service, app, or idea? Device or standard? Then while clicking through sections you see some clipartish generic-looking pictures of people and ipad screens. Only the small vial with blood promises some useful information but no descriptive text or images provide any detail (why this small vial is better and experience is less painful than generic tests?). So after skimming the site reveals nothing you get irritated and leave. There's so much interesting things on Hacker News.
> > Wow. That board of directors is a sight to behold. Looks more like a panel at the World Economic Forum. How on earth did the founder manage to get such high-profile backers?
through liiiiiiiesssss

@jou I feel like writing a canonical post, can I write one on all the different ways in which you can make a WindowsToGo drive?

@rahuldottech that's probably a question for meta

@JourneymanGeek eugh just say yes

No
;p
cause even as a mod, that's what I'd do

1:00 PM
lol okay I'll post on meta then

Anyone use Https Everywhere extension? Today, I got an update of that extension and it resolves the certificate issue in Firefox.

@Biswapriyo What about it?

Bob
@Biswapriyo uhm, the cert issue has nothing to do with that extension
@rahuldottech nothing illegal

@Bob Yeah, yeah
Creating WindowsToGo drives isn't illegal

1:17 PM
@Bob All other extensions installed shows that warning but not that one.

Bob
@Biswapriyo update your firefox
it's a firefox bug that was fixed in 66.0.4/66.0.5
anything else that doesn't get automatically re-verified is an addon without an extension id and needs to be reinstalled from amo

@Bob Oh, what a consequence, I got it just now (~1 ms).

It appears in the feed items FWIW

1:32 PM
Whoo downvotes

DVs on meta work differently

@Burgi As in they don't affect my total rep? Yeah, I know

@rahuldottech and its agreement/disagreement too
which is true of main meta, where its true too.

Yeah

On the contrary—monospaced fonts are harder to read precisely because each letter occupies the same amount of horizontal space. Thereby, there is one less factor that differentiates letters, which makes it harder to tell them apart. — Tin Man Nov 11 '18 at 14:01
TIL. Personally, I've always found monospace fonts to be the most readable, but I appear to be in the minority with that
Also, they're apparently more readable to people with dyslexia (I'm not dyslexic).

4:12 PM
So did we reach a consensus on the Windows To Go post?

It's a bit early, give it some time

Hmm ok
+2/-2 lmao

Meta posts can take quite a while for folks to weigh in
The way I see it there's nothing stopping you just writing a self-answer question
I'm not entirely sure why it needs to be canonical

@bertieb Well, the question would be too broad, I think

Can still already VTC older questions as duplicates of newer ones

4:17 PM
"What are the different ways in which I can create WTG drives, and what are their respective advantages and disadvantages?"

It's possible
I think a naïve "I'd like to boot Windows from a USB drive and I've heard there's a feature called WindowsToGo which might achieve this. How might I create a WTG drive?" might be okay
"different ways" is implicit, and "advantages and disadvantages" is reasonably implicit too

@bertieb And there would be half a dozen snarky comments asking me to perform a basic web search
I'd honestly rather just wait for an "ok" from a mod or the community

@rahuldottech So?
Flag them a unconstructive

@bertieb //shrug

I mean, if you actually post a self-answer question it's fairly obvious you know what you're talking about
Also, if it can really be answered with a basic search do we really need a canonical post on it?
(to play Devil's advocate)

4:22 PM
@bertieb It can't be answered with a basic search, see my meta as to why

Then I wouldn't sweat the comments

but is there enough traffic for @rahuldottech to spend his time doing a canonical post?

@Burgi I'd honestly just write it and put it on my blog anyway

i haven't seen any WTG questions in the new questions list

For my future reference, and anyone else looking to make WTG drives
And to point to each time someone asks me what is going on when they see me use a WTG drive in person, which happens more often than you'd think

4:27 PM
@Burgi Submit that as an answer
I'll probably submit my own "just write one" as an answer
folks can vote

4:59 PM
Hmm, doing a system update has changed a green colour my terminal uses

5:11 PM
Fortunately, after a brief skirmish, I seem to have gained the upper hand in the battle against my internal organs, at least until they learn to read and find out the mean stuff I've said about them.

Also tmux going to 2.9 'broke' some stuff
Unless... ah, byobu is an AUR package
will need to update that too

Just as I had expected, the cells are mounted horizontally. It's a lot lighter than the Jackery SuperCharge 20000 because it has 6 cells rather than 8 and uses plastic construction, but delivers similar capacity due to the use of higher-capacity cells.
On second thought, I'm not so sure it's eight cells...
Perhaps four 20700 cells?
(yes, there are 4800 mAh 20700 cells)

@JourneymanGeek @bwDraco
I'm thinking of getting this for college:

Hmm?

Here's a review Linus just put out: youtu.be/sXLdIYL30tw
According to comments on HN, it makes for a brilliant note taking device with a long battery life
It's also cheap enough that I wouldn't have to constantly worry about it getting stolen/damaged

Consider a Windows on Snapdragon device?

7:30 PM
Also, lots of potential for custom mods!
@bwDraco what's the cheapest for one?

Not as moddable, but can run Win32 apps, and Arm64/AArch64 desktop apps are becoming available (including Firefox).
Designed primarily to run Windows Store apps, but desktop app options are growing.
Options at lower price points seem to be rather hard to find, though.
Hmm. Instead of an Arm-based solution, how about the Surface Go?
brb.
It's probably the perfect cheap Windows tablet for students. Starts at US$400, uses a Y-series Pentium Gold processor (not Atom-type, just low-powered).

8:11 PM
@rahuldottech i sawe he did a review, is there a predicted price?

8:41 PM
So, colours being subtly different lead to me registering on launchpad to submit a bug on the byobu project
I have no idea what the heck I was doing before I decided to update
Fell deep down the rabbit hole on this one
Also I could swear a few minutes ago it was around 8ish

I'm not super-familiar with specialty open-source hardware of the sort @rahuldottech was initially looking at. I'd probably stick with familiar PC hardware for actual student use, and get a separate device for hacking around with.
So... do you need a hackable, moddable, open-source solution, or just a simple computing solution for note-taking and stuff in university?
2
(I am purposely avoiding the word "college" in this context because it's not widely used outside of the United States in reference to postsecondary education)
I'm actually thinking that as a basic device for student use, the Surface Go is probably the best answer.
But I have concerns about price; at Rs. 38,599 for the 4/64 model, this is well above the US$399 we'd pay for the same.
(8/128 at Rs. 50,999; in the US, it's $549)
Is this kind of pricing premium typical for electronics in India?

@bwDraco This is an excellent point
I've lost track of the number of times I've chosen something moddable and hackable over something that, er, works well
and stopped using the thing as a result
that being said, these things have gotten a lot better over time
but it's still worth considering where along the openness spectrum of 'Apple-to-Richard M Stallman' you want to base your decisions on

This might be a silly question... but how do you change what shell you drop into when using ssh?
