@dhein Would it be correct to say that it's not always a case of purely playing devil's advocate, but rather, an issue that appears black and white to your conversant is genuinely ambiguous to you? That way, even if you lean towards their side, it would actually be disingenuous of you to say "obviously you're right, but here's why I think the wrong people think the way they do." Correct me if I'm wrong. Because I often find myself in that spot. — Bridgeburners 53 secs ago

I concur, this is very good advice. One thing I would add: sometimes, acknowledging the weirdness in a situation can actually make it less weird. I personally would feel more comfortable saying something like, "How are you?" "Fine." "I feel like every time I see you I ask the same question. Today I have a weird question. What are your thoughts on [interesting, accessible, non-contentious issue]?" — Karen Lowe 1 min ago

When I say smoking is part of my routine, I mean there are specific moments I feel the need to do it (just before my job, right after I arrive at home etc.). When I'm on vacation, these opportunities never come and do I don't feel the need to light a cigarette. Thank you so much! Your response really helped me to define the best way to converse about this. — Cphrreiuslo 23 secs ago
