Q: science fiction

RickThere was a man who encounters an older person in a house that he has barricaded himself into, but does not know why. They are attacked by flying lights. The older person (an alien)starts becoming younger...Eventually they end up at Stone Henge and later he ends up on another planet where when a ...

@NapoleonWilson it's the abs gutter that come from having to balance your walk, when your boobs are bigger than your feet.

I see.
@Marvin No shit, eh?

@NapoleonWilson I'm even surprised this is long enough to have passed as a title.

@Marvin is that too broad? It doesn’t have a media type, could take maybe 5x as long to find without any restrictions on format

I'd err on the side of no, as there still are some rather unique elements.
How many stories take place on a planet where being stressed makes you younger?

12:15 AM
"Story" heavily implies a written medium, though.

that too

If not even a short story.
You neither call books nor films "stories" really, unless you're making a point specifically about their stories.
(Which isn't saying more clarity would hurt the question.)
(Or that one more "too broad"-closed ID question was a bad idea in general.) ;-)

@NapoleonWilson they never said “story” except in tags

Oh, right, I forgot the original title was...not what it is now.

@NapoleonWilson Do you dislike ID questions?

12:19 AM
@Stormblessed cough cough laughs and dies of choke

@Stormblessed I'm just joking around. Keep enjoying 'em!
AndresF's comment will hit the fantasy enthusiasts where it hurts, though.

@NapoleonWilson I thought fantasy is just advanced science fiction.

Like this.
Kind of.

Because they...don't bother with explaining it? ;-)
Thus making it "purer".

12:25 AM
Any sufficiently advanced science-fiction is indistinguishable from fantasy.
2

If they explained it, I'd be out of business.
Actually, I wouldn't. I would just post answers disagreeing with the explanations, which I sometimes do anyway.
@Jenayah Funny, I recently answered a question about that on Mi Yodeya.

So if we're back to that story-ID, it's not too broad, it's a book, and I'm pretty sure the answer I'm currently writing is correct. ;)

How'd ya know it's a book, though? (Unless you're so bold as to posit your answer as correct.) ;-)

@NapoleonWilson considering I found the text, and it seems like quite a match, I think it is :)

> Can't argue with a confident [wo]man.

12:31 AM
@NapoleonWilson as expected from Napoleon Wilson. :)

Yeah. Second time today.
I need to close a few tabs, or something.

Argh, wrong room.

Oh, this Jewish April Fool's thing is on?

Kind of.
But it lasts for two weeks.

The room is like...super black and everything, though. It's not like mixing up two beta sites. ;-)

12:47 AM
Yeah, I just clicked on the wrong tab and already pressed enter before I could stop myself.

Zimmer and Wallfisch really managed to bring the appeal of Vangelis over to the 21st century, though. Similar to how Villeneuve managed to transport the film's atmosphere into modern appeal. Let's see if whoever will do the music for Dune takes some inspiration from Toto, though. ;-)

Fantasy is purer, because science fiction is false advertising.
Fantasy is sugar water.
Most science fiction is also sugar water, but it's sugar water that's sold as a dietary supplement.
And even worse, it doesn't even have as much sugar!

I think it might just be a troll

Q: Cartoon Jack-o'-Lantern

OngoThis is a cartoon I remember seeing an episode of as a preview on a VHS tape in the early 2000s. He knows when you're on Tinder
He knows when you send tweets
He knows when you've been bad or good
Because his computer skills are l33ts
That Santa Claus is seriously creepy.
Apparently he "sees you when you're sleeping."
That's stalker behavior!
And what's even worse is that he's spying on kids too. And "he knows when you're awake" - he watches people sleep the whole night.
And we're told that we'd "better" not get upset when we hear that this dubious individual is coming to town.

Q: Dystopian books where society is split into 3 classes: lower, middle and untouchables, teenagers are trained to be killers

KateI’m trying to identify a book by a rather vague plot line that I’ve been given... Society is split into three classes. The lower, middle and untouchables. Teenagers are trained to be SAS type killers.

@Marvin sounds a bit like a misremembered version of Divergent
@TheLethalCarrot I disagree; your comment, which explicitly mentions acceptance, more gives that impression; mine is more a "please see this link". I don't think it's too forceful.

Mine says you can do this yours says you're supposed to do this
The supposed is what I was talking about, shouldda been clearer

Mine says that this link contains instructions on what you should do; I'm saying "please see the link for what it says you should do"
And... yeah, for story-ID in particular, yes, they are supposed to accept the answer in any case (less so for other types of questions).
In any case, they've accepted, so both comments are obsolete ;)

9:27 AM
Well no they aren't "supposed" to, acceptance is always the prerogative of the OP, which is why comments/edits/whatever form the OP decides to use to say "yes this is it" count

Yes, they count, but it's not ideal. It's ideal that they actually accept.

True, my whole point is that "supposed" implies they should/must accept an answer whereas they don't have to
It is entirely up to them if they want to or not

@Marvin just from this description I'd guess Divergent:
> In a post-apocalyptic Chicago, survivors are divided into five factions based on their dispositions: Abnegation, the selfless; Amity, the peaceful; Candor, the honest; Dauntless, the brave; and Erudite, the intelligent. [...] After receiving the results, test takers choose a faction at the Choosing Ceremony, no matter what their results were. Those who do not complete initiation into their new faction become "factionless" and are forced to live in poverty on the streets of the city.
> Sixteen-year-old Beatrice Prior is born into an Abnegation family. She doesn't feel she belongs in Abnegation because she doesn't see herself as selfless. Her aptitude test results are inconclusive and indicate aptitude for three factions – Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless.
> Initiation into Dauntless is composed of three stages. The first involves learning how to handle guns and knives and hand-to-hand combat with other initiates.
Society is divided; "factionless" are the very low class; plot focuses on a teenage main character who is trained to be a killer

I know this may be a bit OT, but since we once had a discussion about the Hobbit animated movie in this room (and how some characters weren't exactly loyal to the original depiction in the book - see lizardman Gollum or laser-eye Smaug) I though it would be fun to post this picture here.

Hint: the only thing in the picture that may actually give a little clue is the girl on the flying thing on the top right.

@Marvin There's some info in there. Timeframe, character's name. That's helpful. And then there's the other stuff: "people lived in cities". That's less helpful.

None of my fanfictions take place in cities.

right, they take place in a Restaurant.

7:38 PM
@Marvin is there a tag for everything on AO3? Some of what I'm skimming through has more lines of tags than of summary.

Now I want to find a site with .

Stack Exchange.

holy crap, I just typed "popopo" as an AO3 tag for kicks and IT WAS ONE
> “I have good news and bad news.”
“Okay, shoot.”
“I met my soulmate today.”
“Good news?”
“Maybe. Bad news is he’s an idiot who fell in a tiger enclosure at the zoo trying to get a camera out of tree.”
“Oh my god, is he okay?”
“Concussion and lots of bruises and a sprain or two. I think."

The first words your soulmate says to you are written on your skin - Keith was born with 'Hi my name is - ' written over his heart. Lance has 'Holy fuck, are you okay?' scrawled on his arm.
LOL

NishKapish.

7:48 PM
Well the characters have a mark or whatever and that mark is the first word their "soulmate" tell them
So as one in the pair is a moron who fell into the tiger's enclosure, when they met one said "Hi my name is" and the other interrupted him with "Holy fuck are you OK" so they both have what the other told them tattoed on their arms
So a guy is walking around with "Holy fuck are you kay" on his arm and that's funny

Wישא,ד ןא כרםצ?
What's it from?
This time it was an accident.

it was part of the results in that fanfic-ID search
Another one:
> The soulmate tattoo thing is all well and good - the first words your soulmate will speak to you are etched on your arm from birth, and it made finding true love easier, supposedly.

It gets a little bit difficult when the tattoo says, in inky black letters, “shut the fuck up.”
AHAH! Found it!

8:05 PM
The soulmate plot line (in fan fiction or otherwise) usually is an excuse to get two people who hate each other together, in my experience.

Actually... who wants a free story-ID answer? I'm fine with general violence and sex, but I'm not linking to something tagged with child abuse and homophobia.
Always by CantSpeakFae. Make of that what you wish.

@Jenayah Tagged by the author?

Found with summary:"your mum" and tagged "Soulmate Identifying mark"
@Adamant how do I know?

@Jenayah oh I see
I've seen soulmates in regular fiction

Summary was relatively okay though:
> "I don't give a fuck what your mum told you." He said, his voice surprisingly gentle. "Or anyone else, for that matter, because that's not God's name on your arm. It's mine."

8:08 PM
Trinity and Neo from the Matrix probably count.

Seriously though, how do I know whether the tagged was added by the author? Other people can add tags?
The tag is "internalized homophobia"

I misunderstood and thought the story was tagged as homophobic (not "having homophobic characters") , and I was confused as to why someone would tag their own story that way.

ah
well that's still a no for me, especially when adding child abuse in the mix
that thing has basically every NSFW tag you cna think of.

Yeah.

@Stormblessed oh, the Lockhart one

Also, someone might be pissed. It's a Buffy fanfic.

I’d edit the post, but then it’d be bumped up...

8:20 PM
If you answer it's going to be bumped up anyways.

It’s quite vague
@Jenayah I’m not going to

Spike and Angel?

@Adamant no idea

That's actually canon I think.
I actually just assumed it was Harry Potter when I first saw it.
I mean, 90% of our fanfiction questions are, right?

well this was a fanfic which didn't know which work it was on

8:26 PM
OK so 132 Harry Potter fanfiction questions
172 total or something
So a good 3/4 are Harry Potter.

@Adamant they're not all story-ID though
we had that discussion before

Right

sec

My favorite Harry Potter fanfiction is called not Methods of Rationality and not My Immortal. ;)
Idk I heard the Draco trilogy was well written. But, you know, OOC Malfoy.

yeah, starting here:

(yes, I am aware fanfic-id is 95% HP, but the question remains)
You know, finding that transcript yields a funny result
for the record I found it because I knew I had corrected @Alex on his stats as not all fanfic tag is story-ID
and Alex often replies "good point" when someone makes, well, a good point
so this is the query I used... chat.stackexchange.com/… (search for "good point" and Alex's id)

8:32 PM
Ah I see

Turns out that out of the 11 times @Alex said "good point", I was the one making a good point ahahah

@Jenayah I apply to you Ron's comment about Hermione.

@Alex which one?

@Jenayah After she corrects him about Wingardium Leviosa.

just quote the thing already, I'm lazy :P

8:35 PM
@Jenayah It's no wonder no one can stand her

HEY!

@Jenayah In order to not let that get to your head, I can correct this comment.

But it's like, canon Malfoy: whiny, spoiled, average-looking cowardly rich bigot. Popular fan fic portrayal of Malfoy: kind, attractive, half-Veela potions whiz and smolderingly sexy.
Well. They're both blond.

Now I'm going to go cry in the girl's bathroom and you and your best friend will have to save me from a troll.
Uh. That sounds different when said on the Internet than in Hogwart's context.

Mar 3 at 21:23, by Mithrandir
@Alex Don't look at me. I have no friends :P
@Jenayah It looks like most of my "fair point"s were to you as well.

8:40 PM
@Alex 5/7, not bad

Stop making so many good points already.

:D

Or else I need to find a new line.
On the other hand, ~28% of all my messages have been to you, so that might account for some of the statistics.

Did you count that with the replies?

8:45 PM
Because there are also lots of time we talk to each other without the reply button :P
like... right now

@Jenayah Good point.

One more to my collection!

So maybe, like ~47%

possible. Hard to calculate exactly.

That is pretty intense.
Consider that of other frequent users, such as Mithrandir, TheLethalCarrot, and Stormblessed, I only have ~500 total replies.

8:49 PM
Well, we probably are the two most active chatters here.

Though you have nearly 2.5 times as many messages as me.
So
I'll

@Alex aaaaaand failed :D

@Jenayah The annoying three messages per five seconds limitation got me.

:D

@Alex Well, if you and I have to save Jenayah from a troll, you can stick your wand up the troll's nose.

I knew there must be a reason not to master wandless magic...

LOL

8:59 PM
But if it does come down to dirtying my wand vs saving Jenayah... it's a tough choice.

HEY!

Sep 5 '18 at 17:23, by Alex
@Jenayah I hope you weren't insulted by my joke.

Dec 20 '18 at 21:37, by Jenayah
@Alex nah, no worries. But you've told me to tell you before, and my answer still stays, if you annoy me I'll tell you :)
Now go calculate how many of those are to me.

I'll be waiting.
Oh hey, the story-ID which I thought wasn't a dupe is actually totally a dupe.

9:15 PM
21/47.
You either need to start worrying, or I need to stop apologizing.

ahah

Q: What is Tony Stark injecting into himself in Iron Man 3?

Johnny BonesIn the beginning of Iron Man 3 (2013), Tony injects something into his forearm. He then attempts to get his suit to come to him. After it fails, he licks his arm, rubs it and tries again, at which time it works. Is it ever explained, either in the movie or the comic book source, what he's inje...

@SmokeDetector well that's a new kind of R/A. It promotes the site you're on.
