It's an MSI GP60 2qf (leopard pro) laptop
But since disk-read-write is abstraction anyways, I expect a view of the abstraction, not the underlying metal access. - I also just realized that I cannot run the system monitor as root, nor does it display any root processes (even though I set processes to "all")
iotop, after an initial "startup" of several minutes started showing some data, nothing out of the ordanary so far, but then again I'm not in the process of a cold-start anyways (20+ minute startup is only when I just boot the system, after that restarting any tool I use is fast).

Wait, you're having slow boot ups? Now I am lost at what you are actually asking..

1:02 AM
@Terrance Well it's not the booting, it's the loading of the development suite (webstorm, postgres docker, nginx dev server docker, flow server, pgadmin server) - but only in a just booted system. The main thing that really stalls are webstorm and the flow server, with the whole system becoming unresponsive yet not reporting high cpu.
Webstorm tells me it is busy "indexing files", so I suspect that means it is due to hdd access, but I can't seem to tell that from the OS side.
I could buy an SSD for ~150 euros, but if that isn't the problem it 150 euro thrown through the drain: since the laptop is getting older I won't keep it that long anymore anyways.

@paul23 any SSD is a improvement
and you can reuse it anyway
I threw a cheap chinese SSD into a c2d and it was awesome.
and since the laptop died, I can throw it into another system if needed

Well I could reuse, however laptops typically void warrantee when you open the case, on top of that laptops have few slots available (typically none free): so in practice you wouldn't reuse it. And due to my current living circustances I can't see me switching to a desktop the next few years

You'd void the warranty to replace it anyway.
could even stick it into a (fast) disk enclosure.
also no one will likely check. I've done the switcharoo a few times

Yes, but warranty of my laptop has passed after 2 years: so I can easily open it now. A new future laptop will probably have a better SSD than the one I can buy right now anyways. (2 years ago, when I bought this one it was uncommon to have a larger than 100GB ssd in laptops, nowadays 1TB ssds are common in new laptops).
It's also 150 euros that I need to get from somewhere.

1:22 AM
eh, what's your price/size requirement? and are you willing to take an educated risk on brands? ;p
I'm pretty sure I've been running a 250gb ssd over the past 7 years. If you're looking at smaller sizes - sandisk has a budget line, or there's a few chinese manufacturers who're pretty cheap - I've been running a "kingdian" and like it enough that I'm debating getting a 1tb SSD from them

1:50 AM
Well I most definitely want an Europe based company, both do I feel bad of sending value to outside countries, as well as I have bad experiences getting my rights regarding support set straight by countries outside europe (even though since they sell to a european customer they have to follow european law).
For example: whenever one buys any goods through a digital medium (phone, internet) I have -by law- a 2 month full money back guarantee, even if I used it (apart from consumables like food and gasoline).
While it's already hard to get this right, it's even harder to get the "full money" back, which. - again by law- includes any service like sending costs and return-sending costs or removal costs. This is the "risk for the seller".

@Terrance I've been at AU for almost 11 months and mostly active since last 5-6 months. I've seen I guess 6-7 questions like that. In some people post question from another site or even from same site and ask for explanation here. Same title, same body but with one extra line, "Can someone help me to understand this?" Some asks as a new question, some posts as an answer asking for explanation of another answer.
I remember once there was a question, something like "How to install drivers for <some wireless device>? [duplicate]" I asked OP why they used [duplicate] in the title, it is misleading and can cause users that it is already closed as duplicate. Then chili555 made a comment: "It is now a [duplicate] [duplicate]" after closing it as a duplicate of some other question. xD

@Rinzwind That's why he has a golden badge for wireless. I learnt many things from him, some directly and some indirectly. Also, on SE I never doubt a person who has a golden badge in thats particular tag with an appreciable score and posts. :)

@blade19899 that’s the first time I heard of Tox, I only know Wire:

Hi
I more or less followed this guide in order to mount my share folder on my Ubuntu 18.04 VM (guest): gist.github.com/estorgio/1d679f962e8209f8a9232f7593683265
I'm using VirtualBox on a Mac host
I can copy a file from the host OS (Mac) to the shared folder and I will see this newly added file in the guest VM (Ubuntu 18.04), but I cannot add a file to the shared folder from the guest OS
I get the following error
Ok, I found a solution. I was copying the file using the drag and drop. But using sudo from the terminal solved the issue. Is there a way not to require sudo?

@Rinzwind Honestly saying I admire some of the people here like, you, Oli, muru, Zanna, dessert, Fabby (of course), chili555, pomsky, karel, terdon, Radu, Byte Commander, Sergiy and many more (I couldn't even remember their name). Although I never interacted with Oli, Byte Commander, muru and Radu (inactive for 3 long years) but I do admire them.
Hey @terdon Can you please convert this answer into a comment? Though it's not an answer but might be useful as a comment.

@Kulfy If you believe the NAA answer should be converted into a comment I would suggest a mod flag stating exactly where the comment whould be placed on this answer. terdon is pretty active but there are manymore mod's on the page. :)

Hi all.
I'm new here

@Videonauth I posted here since terdon is active here. And thank you Videonauth. I'll raise a mod flag as well. :)
@VarunChhangani Welcome to Ask Ubuntu!!! :)

11:59 AM
@Kulfy yes, please use flags for that sort of thing. That way, there's a record, and any mod can do it. If you ping me, I have to drop what I'm doing and rush to see. If I don't deal with it, nobody else will because nobody else will know.
Actually, the link given in that answer is just the same as the information in N0rbert's answer above.

@terdon Ah!! Sorry for that. I'll keep this thing in mind in future :)
@terdon I didn't notice link in N0rbert's answer. Well thank you very much :)

@Kulfy Thanks! :)
@Kulfy No, the link in the answer you flagged was pointing to another answer. That other answer just repeated what was in N0rbert's.

@terdon Oh I see. I need to be more observant.

@Kulfy Oh, no, that wasn't a rebuke! That was very easy to miss.

I am going to London on Sunday. What should I do? It may be my last visit for some years

@Zanna if by bus do NOT try to make a u-turn on Kensignton Street.

2:33 PM
haha surely it would be out of my hands if the bus driver tried that

@Zanna How come? That sounds ominous!
Here, @Rinzwind, a poem dedicated to the (possibly fictitious) day you pass Oli in rep.
> What are we waiting for, assembled in the forum?

Rinzwind is due here today.

Why isn’t anything going on in Meta?
Why are the moderators sitting there without legislating?

Because Rinzwind is coming today.
What’s the point of moderators making laws now?
Once Rinzwind is here, he’ll do the legislating.

Why did our highest rep user get up so early,
and why is he sitting enthroned at the city’s main gate,
in state, wearing the crown?

Because Rinziwind is coming today
and the highest rep user’s waiting to receive him.

@terdon haha not really... it's also my first non-work visit in a couple of years

@Zanna Are you a peanuts fan?
If so, the exhibition of Charles Schultz' work is apparently really worth seeing.
I'm afraid I don't really know what's on much :( There's a show on in the Royal Academy of Arts that's supposed to be great. Do let me know if you decide to go to that, my GF works there! Maybe we can meet :)

my mum is going to that, but I am not really interested, so wondering what else to do ^_^

@terdon Ummm.. may be. Can't confirm now. I'm not able to see deleted posts cause I'm still a <10k user ;-)
@Rinzwind I admire them because of different reasons not because of reputation. Rinzwind will you start "donating" your reputation after you surpass Oli?

completely off-topic question. I'm thinking of moving from Ubuntu to arch, but have really only used Ubuntu. Managed to install Arch on a USB (several days of reading and struggling) - other than loading my regular set of programs (or a reasonable alternative) is there anything I should watch out for?

4:42 PM
@Rinzwind Nice, thanks. Just answered.

@CharlesGreen I’ve set up an Arch machine recently und found this very helpful:

@CharlesGreen Not really. Make 200% sure you follow the Installation Guide to the letter.
It's just another Linux, there are no radical differences. You'll have to learn pacman instead of apt, but everything else is pretty standard.

@terdon nice! any reason you’re using md5sum instead of sha256 as in the question?

@dessert Because md5sum is a standalone command and I don't need to screw around with openssl. This cannot be for any sort of security reason, so I don't see any benefit in using sha.
Let me clarify that though.

@dessert Thanks for the link - I'll review this one
@terdon I did have to make a few changes to the install instructios to boot from usb drive reliably- this was why the "several days of reading". Ubuntu (might) make things too easy with their graphical installer!

4:49 PM
Yes, the installation is easier on Ubuntu. I've installed Arch a few times now, though never on a USB, and I found that any deviation from the guide would screw things up, but everything worked if I followed it exactly.
I've been a happy Arch user for about 3 years or so now.

@terdon openssl? /usr/bin/sha256sum is part of coreutils – am I misunderstanding something here?

@terdon They have a specific page for install to USB (nice!) and recommend alterations to mkinitcpio.conf, and the grub-install command needs a couple of options set.

while we’re on it, seems to be an ambiguous and quite useless tag
covers it nicely IMO

@dessert Yes. You are misunderstanding the level of my ignorance.
Thanks, I changed it to that. Since the other answer was using an openssl approach, I didn't even think to check for a standalone :)
@CharlesGreen Oh, you're using grub? why?

glad to be of help :)

4:59 PM
I had all sorts of issues installing grub and found it much easier to just use the EFI loader instead.

5:11 PM
@terdon 'Cause I know no better? Now I gotta go figure out how to use the EFI loader. Took me forever to realize I need to install efibootmgr to make grub work.

@CharlesGreen I just blindly went to install grub and it took me ages to figure out I was only making my life harder for no reason.
That was my first EFI system, I think, so I didn't even know the booloader was optional. But optional it is, and I advise you not to install it unless you really need it for some reason.

me: did Windows for ages - got fed up - loaded Ubuntu - learned about grub...
@terdon So, basically I make an EFI partition, and just mark the main partition as bootable?
and install efibootmgr at some point?

@CharlesGreen I don't really remember anymore to tell you the truth. Just do whatever the guide says :)

Hello brother, I am not a pro in linux/ubuntu. I am facing a problem. if anyone helps me out for this issue, I will be grateful.

@ThomasWard So leave it alone for a while. Then it can be closed. And it can live as a kind of wiki. But frankly I don't like this manual
There are bad practices
Why is he fixed on posting it here

I have two laptops. The previous one had Windows 8 + Ubuntu. Few drivers. Probably two of them.
New one has 240 GB SSD + 1TB of HDD attached to my CD Drive.
While I was copying my previous files to new laptop via rsync. my new laptop charge went down to zero. then when I rebooted my laptop, I find that it's not mounting anymore.

`sudo e2fsck -f /dev/sdb1` command says
```
@ssi-anik Please post a question on the main site where everyone can see it and benefit from the answers. it will also help to have everything laid out clearly and well formatted.
@terdon I tried to format it. it's not formatting. okay. posting it on the main site. hope someone helps me out in the mid of my night. scared to lose the files. :(
@ssi-anik wait, what about your backup?
8:11 PM
@dessert It's on another laptop. still intact. but had some extra GB of files on my current laptop. If I have to format it, it'll be all gone.
@ssi-anik do you have a separate /home partition where the files are stored? if yes, just don’t format that. if no, simply boot from a live cd/usb and backup the files before repairing the system. I would do the latter in any case, really – never fiddle with your system without expecting full data loss.
@dessert On my new laptop, I have 240 GB ssd solely for ubuntu related files and my 1TB hdd is for my backups and other stuffs. imgur.com/a/U161V3M
@dessert And, I tried to take the back from my previous laptop to my 1TB hdd, which doesn't (probably shouldn't) contain any boot related files.
@terdon a question has been asked, askubuntu.com/questions/1122321/…
sounds like a nice setup :) why don’t you just make a new install instead of copying the OS? I always prefer that, Ubuntu installs really fast and it’s a clean new environment. If you just copy over the dotfiles and hidden directories (most importantly ~/.config) in your home directory, settings are preserved.
8:28 PM
@dessert no, i didn't copy the os. I transferred my documents and other stuff. didn't touch the OS. previous laptop had sort of 320 GB of data. what's what I was copying.
please include that and all the information you gave here in your question by editing it
@dessert all the information are passed to that question. the images are given in the comment.
@Pilot6 Ask them that.
@Pilot6 That is the plan now.
the other parts though, 2 and 3 and on wards are staying closed though
that's a non-negotiable :P
@ssi-anik Do as the comment says: remove the NTFS HDD and run CHKDSK /F on a friend's computer.
How to do that is a hardware question: off-topic here
@ssi-anik Ah, that's much clearer, thanks!
@ThomasWard You should change glasses: your laser-eyes aren't coming through as well any more...
How have you been? Long time no see!
@Fabby okay man. thanks. <3
How come there are so many people here on a Friday-night??? Don't you all have parties to go to???
@ThomasWard I agree 100% with that. Already asked, no reply
@ThomasWard Sleep & Dreams is better than Rock & Roll...
Good night!
Hey Rinzy. Which game are you playing nowadays???
@Fabby I drink randomly, not on Fryday's
@Pilot6 I don't drink during the week.
I can drink during the weekend, but don't have to...
I did las Saturday. The wine was so good.. I drank too mach and couldn't find my glasses the next day
8:56 PM
But then: both grandfathers were alcoholics, and I've never had a hangover in my entire life so I'm prone to alcoholism.
@Pilot6 :D :D :D
The glasses we the most expensive that I had ))
:O
You still haven't found them???
But I didn't drink that good wine for a long time
What do you like? Red/ White? French / Italian / South African, ...
I did find them finally. I called the place where the party was, asked a lot of people to remember if I had them on when left... no dice
The wine was French
And found them at home
on the piano keyboard
8:58 PM
@Pilot6 Which region?
@Pilot6 :D
The first place to look is the last place you looked...
I don't remember, because it was a bit unusual, not that I know. I need to find out
I want to buy it again
The only red wines I love are Bourgogne and Veronese...
The latter because I've been drinking it since I was 2...
I used to be an expert in bordeaux
... back in the time when children were made to drink 1/5 wine and 4/5 boild spring water.
I don't like Bourgogne really
9:00 PM
@Pilot6 Urgh! Awful!
@Pilot6 Good! I'll bring you all the Bordeaux I have...
Well I had to, I worked for a distribution company. They gave lots for free, some was not bad
(not much as most people klnow I don't like it)
I know that many people don't like it.
I will find out what that wine was. I drank two bottles ))
And I don't remember how I got homwe
Blackout! Never had one of those though my sister had one when she was 16...
She never had one again (that I'm aware of)
Everyone had white and all were OK
(at least you didn't wake up in a cell...)4
BRB
9:18 PM
Warum bist du nicht in die Bierstube???
>:-)
@Fabby „in der Bierstube“, „in“ erfordert Dativ, wenn es einen Ort angibt und Akkusativ für eine Richtung, also „in der Bierstube sein“ vs. „in die Bierstube gehen“
If you want to wake me, just make a mistake. ;)
@dessert :D :D :D
I should change jobs and find a company that allows me to follow German courses again.
0:-)
I don't use any Dative, Genitive, Accusative, ... None of that nonsense!
That's why my Russian is so bad...
I don't conjugate anything: all infinitive and normative.
The problem is: my pronunciation is so good people think I'm taking the mickey...
It is too difficult. I started studying Italian, but it's so tough. Later I found out that most of Italians don't use most of that staff
@Pilot6 stuff...
:D
9:28 PM
Staff = the people reporting into you.
I know
Sorry!
But I randomly mix them up
Italian is easy!
or a long wooden stick
9:29 PM
Especially on Friday night
I forget how words are spelled in Russian as well
I used to mix up then and than until recently...
That's just because I learned to program before learning to speak English...
It is like wierd weird ))
or of course and off course
But staff and stuff both exist, but I have to focus to pick a correct one
(first is "naturally", second one is "not going in the right direction" )
Yeah... Your English is so good, I wouldn't have guessed you're Russian.
9:31 PM
off course mustn't be a common one
Typical Russian mistakes are never using "a" or "the" or "to be"...
@Pilot6 Ships or airplanes.
My English is good, because I first learned writing in it, before Russian
(or mixing up "a" and "the")
But that was very long ago
Now not so good
@Pilot6 Holy shit moly!
9:33 PM
))
@Pilot6 Still good.
I studied in an English school when I was a kid in LA
What's the secret of speaking a foreign language well?
No idea
If you need to speak French: drink French wine
If you need to speak Russian: drink vodka
If you need to speak Italian: drink Grappa
If you need to speak Dutch: drink genever
If you need to speak German: drink beer.
:D :D :D
All drunk people all over the workd understand one another...
9:36 PM
Oh I know why I write in Russian not so good. I don't drink vodka
I remember having a great night out in a bar in Moscow, even exchanged phone numbers only to find out the next day she didn't speak anything except Russian, bit she understood me all evening long...
@Pilot6 :D :D :D
I drink French wine, have a French wife, but know only a couple of words in French
@Pilot6 Do you know what "Je m'en fout" actually means???
Spelling in French is awful, you can never remember that
No
@Pilot6 It's the easiest language to spell in the world!
@Pilot6 I don't give a fuck F-word...
9:38 PM
My wife is saying the same )
But I don't agree
And it's allowed in business language because there is one that's worse!!!
Je m'en branle!
@Pilot6 the only difficult thing is ê...
You'll get a ban again soon I guess
all the other stuff is easy.
That what my American boss was always saying
@Pilot6 the automatic ban is not very good with foreign languages.
and that's why I'm not translating the last one.
9:40 PM
We could try Chineese. But I have no idea how they type
one expletive every couple of days that doesn't get flagged, passes right through the automatic filtering.
Ah! For Chinese we need @SergiyKolodyazhnyy
Sergiy, no response yet.
Has anyone summoned Chinese-speaking Ukrainian ?
I'll re--iterate Monday.
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Really?
@Pilot6 你觉得呢?That is to say, what do you think ?
9:43 PM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy yes!
How do you type that?
It must be unreal
BRB
On windows - their Pinyin input method. On Ubantu - sogou pinyin (which has fctix as backend). Buggy app, sometimes goes into high CPU usage, but works wonderfully and much better than standard stuff available on Ubantu :)
Is it pressing many keys at a time. I've never seen it. Need to find some video
@Pilot6 simple!
9:46 PM
Oh, it seems everyone can type in Chinese here
There's multiple input methods though. Pinyin is phonetic. Multiple words can correspond to different words, some might be different in tone (Mandarin is tonal language), so ma brings up selection of multiple characters and I select the one necessary. There's radical based inputs, like Wu Bi and Cang Jie input methods. I wanted to learn Wu Bi at one point, just as always "ain't nobody got time for that"
@Fabby It's missing Will Smith's face
Incredible
@Fabby It's alright. I actually have signed up for something. Long drive, not particularly happy, though at least it's immediate hire and 16/hr which is a nice raise above my 11 at university. But all that probably will go into gas money
@Pilot6 You haven't heard me speaking yet :)
I could write numbers when I was a kid, but have no idea how to do it on a keyboard
Wow, speaking is hard with all those tones
My writing isn't particularly good, though. I mostly type.
9:50 PM
It seems impossible for me to learn anything of this kind
Well, mandarin is not that difficult once you get used to the 4 tones. Cantonese has 6. Vietnamese , too. I actually intended to learn both. I used to work in a VN restaurant and picked up a couple of phrases, and at one point was after a Guangzhou girl ( which is in Mainland, but in those areas - Shenzhen, Guangzhou - they speak Cantonese )."
Mandarin is national language and is taught in schools. Although most places have Jia Xiang Hua - home town language, which is the way of saying "local dialect
@dessert :D :D :D Starred!
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Very interesting. How you got there?
@Pilot6 It's possible to learn anything, at least basic rudimentary things. laoshu55000 on youtube is a polyglot who focuses initial learning on introduction and interview, and builts up from there. I've learned to play a tune on hulusi by mere 20-30 minute practice in matter of like 2-3 weeks.
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy If they would be hiring frantically, I would have heard something already...
9:54 PM
I've learned Mandarin just out of loneliness and curiosity. Originally intended to learn Japanese, but then when I came to the US there were no Japanese in my English class in high school, but I picked up couple of phrases from friends. Then started learning on my own
@Pilot6 The real reason: He digs Chinese girls...
Fabby is on point ^
I do
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy The Japanese are frantically looking for any IT people that can speak Japanese and English...
immediate "green card" I've been told.
@Fabby Let them wait till I learn Japanese to the level of my Mandarin, that'll be about 5 years
@Fabby That's what I thought
9:55 PM
(or whatever the colour of the permanent visa to Japan is)
But the learning itself was just "whatever I can find" initially. Books in the library, movies, and of course friends - I was lucky enough to stick around two best friends with whom I only spoke mandarin and whose english wasn't that great, so I would also write some of their essays for classes :)
My dad learns any language in a couple of weeks to be able to talk
@Pilot6 Guess why I moved to Moscow?
>:-)
Like Arabic, Hungarian, etc
@Fabby Also after girls?
@Pilot6 One particular girl:
9:57 PM
Oh that makes sense
Eventually in 2016 I went to a summer camp, met someone special, we broke up , so I went to Shanghai to find her in 2017's winter and stayed there for a month. So yeah. That's my language learning story
That makes sense for sure
And where is she now?
Living in my flat in Moscow?
@Pilot6 So long as you target specific phrases and specific context, you can do that as well. There's sort of finite amount of what is necessary for introductions, basic situations, etc. Of course, there are infinite possibilities
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy That's a good experience really
I mean the previos post
10:00 PM
:49273779 I appreciate the minimalism. The less clutter the better
My problem I can't remember words
@Pilot6 Huh?
@Pilot6 My problem is: I can't remember people's names!
@Pilot6 Previous post meaning mine ?
I forget everything the next day, names too
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy yup
10:02 PM
@Fabby Neither can I. But my name is easy enough - just use 4 letters. Serg. And people remember that as "google search" or "electricity surge"
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy The problem is: my name is unique world-wide...
so if you google my name, it's me...
@Fabby ))))))))))
Not many of my first name... Not many of my last name, none other combined together.
Everyone abroad cal me Dimitri, the Greek variant
@Pilot6 Well, I think she's still in Shanghai. She was doing her Masters degree there. At the time when I went there to make up she already had a new boyfriend, and seemingly has changed from how I remembered her in 2016. I've gone to a lot of lengths to regain her contact, and by last year's summer we sort of argued again when I was drunk, and she deleted me. Along with another person whom I met in Shanghai - that girl is also an interesting magical story
Same name (different last name), same year of birth, almost same month and day - off by like 5 born in nearby province
10:06 PM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Anyway you have what to recall
And nearly died because of her on the last day in Shanghai, btw XD
@Pilot6 Yeah, plenty to recall. Quite an experience and a good bit of personality development
What an interesting life
I am falling asleep 1am again here. Good night!
Mostly my life isn't that interesting. It's series of hiccups, occasional failures, family drama, and being stuck with something for years, like my university. I started ubuntu actually because I was unhappy with my university life and believed I couldn't code. At that time I failed C programming twice
@Pilot6 спокойной ночи
We can continue tomorrow that was really interesting @SergiyKolodyazhnyy but I really am typing with my nose
@Fabby Пока
10:10 PM
@Pilot6 Don't force yourself. Good night !
In the meantime, I somehow managed to break my Deepin desktop - that is a part of it, because dock is not loading. And have to install Cinnamon in VM just to test if one of my indicators works there, because someone asked on GitHub
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Urgh!!!
Add to that recently slow internet because my ISP is having some sort of issues :)
Can't you switch to 3G or 4G?
or get another ISP???
Well, I maybe could. It's just not been a priority with job search. Our contract with them is like 10 years old by now
Call them and ask them when you can get out of your contract so you can switch.
They'll triage you to the top of the list.
Easier to keep a customer than to make a new one.
BRB Need another drink and a bag of chips.
