@Jenayah There were just a few actually.

@Alex right but they were kinda misguided IMO

Q: Fantasy book with a telepathic, poison-spitting snake named Me

Joseph MontanaroI think I read this book sometime in the early to mid 00's, but I have no idea how old it was at the time. From what I remember, the main character (male I think) finds himself in a fantasy world where he is able to telepathically communicate with some (maybe all?) animals. Most particularly, he...

I mean sure the language was crude but the conversation seemed pretty okay between readers and nobody looked offended
although one said they didn't want to pursue much

I'm guessing you didn't read to the end?

It's...likely part of a bigger issue in that room we maybe rather shouldn't delve too much into.

6:07 PM
@Alex ...
goes into shame hiding

No need for that.

ah, duck. I genuinely thought this was about a regular book.
Shoot me.

Does anyone play Quizup here?

Do you want to play Harry Potter

6:12 PM
Oh, I don't play it, sorry. ;-)
(I'm also quite limited on Harry Potter knowledge, I guess.)

What's that?

I mean, I've seen all the films, but...I couldn't confidently name the exact spell wizards use to excrete in public.

No, let me cut to the chase: does it require an account?

I have an encyclopedic knowledge of HP
Quizup is a quiz app where you can play quizzes on hundreds of topics against opponents
You can use Google account
@NapoleonWilson lol

mmmh then no for now, especially since I really ought to clean that Google account of mine

6:15 PM
Ah, we have something similar here. (The quiz app, not the public relief.)

Dual Quiz?

I'm surprised that Pottermore didn't delete that tweet

It's been around the Chamber of Secrets page for ages

Just imagining the founders cleaning shit up literally during the early days of Hogwarts

how 'bout no

6:17 PM
Agreed

oh hey @Adamant long time no see

Adamant is a smart guy

6:40 PM
@Jenayah Hello everyone!

waves

I've been occupied with my research. Sadly not on anything as interesting as the electromagnetic powers of Storm, though.

What kind of research?

@Jenayah biophysics
yeast

what are you trying to do with it? :)
If you're allowed/willing to share

6:43 PM
I'm trying to understand it. So far I'm not sure I do...but I'm getting there.
@Alex It's actually really logical when you think about it. Familiars = the most popular topic in Harry Potter fan-fiction that's not a ship.
Obviously the basilisk has to be one, and the others will always correspond with the Founders' animals.

I guess I have to read more fanfiction then.

And the secret rooms make sense as a generalization of the Chamber of Secrets.

@Adamant I hope that will go well then :)

@Adamant That does sound like a biophysical problem, though. (At least if we believe the premise that it's mutation rather than arbitrary wizardry.)

@Jenayah Thanks.

6:46 PM
@Adamant HP fanfic writers are interested in boats now? runs

@Jenayah you know.....

@Jenayah Well boats are a key element of Harry Potter.

@Alex right, you can't get to Hogwarts without a good ship. At least not if you're a first year

How about a fanfiction where someone bewitches the boats to take the first years to Durmstrang instead of Hogwarts?

goes Googling

6:48 PM
Watch there be one...

there's probably but I'm lazy

Jenoogle = Jelazy.

Dec 22 '18 at 21:11, by Jenayah
I won't search HP fanfic for stuff other than rep points and number of story-id answers :)

So if I post it as a question you'll search for it?

With that much detail? No

6:52 PM
I'll add a few details.
Hagrid gets eaten by the Giant Squid while trying to save them.

oO

Karkaroff is a Hungarian Horntail animagus.

you seem to have a pretty good thing going, just write it so I can ID it later when your readers have forgotten its title

I really should write a fanfiction...

You know, I think there is plenty of good fanfiction out there. It's hard to sort through the low-quality stuff to find it, but it does exist.

6:54 PM
Yeah, I've even read a few of them.

That's the problem with (a) not having any cost to publish it and (b) having a target audience of the original works that just exactly comes of age while reading it.
That's how you end up with the common level of creativity being who can do whom in the most awesome position.

And some need a proofreader, badly.
The one I posted an answer about a few hours ago had probably hundreds of typos/spelling mistakes/grammar mistakes.

7:09 PM
You can get a beta by searching on DLP
I have written a lot of fanfiction but it's extremely NSFW

@NeoDarwin ?
beta what?

A beta reader is usually an unpaid test reader of an unreleased work of literature or other writing (similar to beta testing in software), who gives feedback from the point of view of an average reader to the author. A beta reader is not a professional and can therefore provide advice and comments in the opinions of an average reader. This feedback is used by the writer to fix remaining issues with plot, pacing, and consistency. The beta reader also serves as a sounding board to see if the book has had the intended emotional impact. == Origin == "Beta reader" is an English term originally borrowed...

7:27 PM
@Adamant I'm old. I read this, and my immediate thought was that I didn't remember ships in Harry Potter - nothing nautical at all, outside of the attempt to get the locket Horcrux in HBP.
In other words, ships, not 'ships.

@RDFozz The Durmstrang ship in Goblet of Fire.

@Alex Good catch - forgot about that!
I should really read on further into the transcript instead tossing out these comments the second I read the item that makes me think them, shouldn't I? :-)

No, that would eliminate half the fun.

@Jenayah ...zoid.

@NapoleonWilson "You're a 'droid, and I'm a 'noid."

7:33 PM
@xkcd Dude, that's what caused all these weird EMPs and lightning storms in The Core. Gotta take that serious!

How would Hogwarts people arrive at other schools?

@Alex alright
@Alex the boats for first years
@NapoleonWilson fair nuff
@NeoDarwin Carriages maybe?

@Jenayah Indeed, I mentioned those in my fanfiction above. But I wouldn't technically call those "ships".

meh

Unless the fanfiction is about Harry + boat.

7:42 PM
Is the boat real fast?

Unknown. But Uncle Vernon's boat enhanced by Hagrid's umbrella is fast.

Can I get some more opinions on this question being a "duplicate" scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/203091/… the question tagged as a duplicate seems to be clearly asking something else

@Alex t'was a joke about BArry Allen, one of the major superheroes named "The Flash" :)

@Alex ah, now that actually sounds like something I might read.

@Jenayah You expected me to get that?

7:45 PM
@JMac let me reread that

@Adamant Could be interesting, I guess.

@Alex meh, I throw references all around and almost nobody ever gets them

@Jenayah Keep trying.

@JMac first of all, I can and will only speak for myself, not the other close-voters. At the time of closing I voted to close as I thought even if the answer wasn't on the dupe yet, it should be - I'm one of these "let's gather every tied info in one place" nitpickers. Hence the "correct" thing to do would have been to comment there/ start a bounty (OP can't yet, though). On further reading I'd think they're different enough to be separate
To be honest though that's not something I'd have said if it wasn't for your answer
In any case, voted to reopen.

Q: Damsel in distress adventure/fantasy movie

DalilaDefinitely a feature length movie. Probably in theaters at some point, but might have been a 'made for tv movie'. It was on TV by 1999 or earlier (I remember which house I lived in when I saw it on TV, and I moved out of that house in 1999, so it must have been then or earlier). My best gues...

scifi.stackexchange.com/q/203405/98028 I've seen this on this site
I know I have

Nov 4 '18 at 21:53, by Jenayah
you sure you might not have stumbled upon the movie some day?

@JMac The two questions certainly do sound alike. I've added a note to highlight the difference (the original question was simply asking for how compounding worked mechanically; this question is saying that the compounding process seems to result in getting more power out than was put into the system, and wants to know to know where that comes from).
^ I would have voted to reopen, but I already did that a while ago.

@RDFozz Your vote is still there. For now, at least.

@Jenayah Okay, just trying to figure out if it's worth trying to get reopened with a meta question. I don't have access to votes, so I can't see if the reopen process is going well or not. I was surprised it wasn't a duplicate BTW, I probably looked for 5 minutes + before i actually tried to answer

@JMac It currently has two reopen votes.

Q: Did Obi-Wan ever find out about Anakin going to Tatooine during Ep. II?

Scott.BellWe know Anakin told Palpatine about his stop in Tatooine during AOTC because Palpatine tells him he doesn't have to pretend around him since he knows about the massacre at the Tusken village. But there seems to be no indication of anyone else knowing about him (Anakin) visiting Tatooine and seein...

okay, I might try to get some meta attention on it in a day or two, not really sure yet, thanks

@Alex nope, I knew I had seen it and I found it :)
can't be sure if it's the one though and it most certainly is blatant admitted plagiarism so I'll take it down if Valorum wants the answer back ;p

@Jenayah I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
Especially as Valorum commented on this question and didn't post the answer.

@Alex maybe he didn't remember. Guy's IDed a lot of stuff

All the more reason why there's nothing wrong with it.

8:18 PM
@JMac in this room we have @Adamant whom, I think, knows Cosmere. Care to take a look? :)

@Jenayah Which question?

Can I get some more opinions on this question being a "duplicate" https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/203091/where-does-the-extra-power-come‌-from-in-compounding the question tagged as a duplicate seems to be clearly asking something else

I'd vote to reopen, but I can't do it right now, too busy.

Are you a scientist @Adamant

Give your reopen vote to a >3k proxy
poke @Alex maybe

8:20 PM
@NeoDarwin yes
PhD student

Very cool!!

@Jenayah I feel it would be improper for me to vote, as I don't understand either question.

@NeoDarwin Thank you Kanye

@Alex kidding ;p

(Yes, I don't just automatically vote for everything to be open.)

8:22 PM
Voldemort may be a snake fetishist but his aesthetics were lit

@Alex :o

You thought I do, eh?

Morsmorde is so cool

Nov 8 '18 at 0:08, by RDFozz
@Jenayah I'm shocked - simply shocked - to hear that!

@Jenayah My gold badge is actually 8-4 in favor of closing.

8:24 PM
alright

Well there are a lot of Harry Potter questions that have already been asked.

You can always dig deeper

@NeoDarwin r/nocontext

😎
Who keeps on deleting my comments
😫

eh - if the movie above wasn't in the "risque" grounds, then it's totally not Barbarian queen :P
@NeoDarwin what kind of comments?

8:33 PM
Oh nvm it was a misunderstanding. I provided a quote requested for an answer in the comments and it was added to the post after crediting me

case closed then :)

@NeoDarwin That's pretty normal. Comments are viewed as temporary (you can't always see them all without effort, and they can be moved to a chat room). Whenever the contents of a comment are edited into the post, the comment will probably be removed (unless it had other info not edited in).

furthermore comments aren't searchable
via SE search, that is. Google has them indexed (as it does with everything)

8:49 PM
@Jenayah Indeed that's how I found this:

No worries. I drop into chat every week or so, but mostly just to see if my name has been mentioned — Valorum Oct 7 '18 at 19:40

Q: Sci-fi book in Cyrillic with a white monkey on a pedestal in a Martian landscape screaming a ray of ice

user1978019I saw someone reading a book in Cyrillic. The cover looked like trashy or pulpy scifi. I don't remember if it looked old or new, but if I had to guess I would say it was from the 60s-80s. It had a white monkey on a pedestal in a Martian landscape screaming a ray of ice (or so it seemed). I've do...

Q: Why does Commander Riker assume that the simulation isn't real?

Q: Story (novel) about immortal people who can turn into dragons

enumarisI read this story probably ~15-20 years ago - I don't know if the story is much older. I believe the story is in the form of a novel and not a short story, but I'm not 100% sure. The plot details I can remember are: There are immortal people who can turn into dragons. The protagonist was one of...

Q: Trying to Find a Sci Fi Game Book from My Childhood

BlazeI need help, and if this group can't help me, nobody can. I'm trying to find a book from my childhood. It was from sometime in the early 80s. It was a game in an oversized book (almost a magazine), kind of like a cross between a Choose Your Own Adventure book, a tabletop RPG, and a giant comic b...
