@Adamant I'm old. I read this, and my immediate thought was that I didn't remember ships in Harry Potter - nothing nautical at all, outside of the attempt to get the locket Horcrux in HBP.

@JMac first of all, I can and will only speak for myself, not the other close-voters. At the time of closing I voted to close as I thought even if the answer wasn't on the dupe yet, it should be - I'm one of these "let's gather every tied info in one place" nitpickers. Hence the "correct" thing to do would have been to comment there/ start a bounty (OP can't yet, though). On further reading I'd think they're different enough to be separate

@JMac The two questions certainly do sound alike. I've added a note to highlight the difference (the original question was simply asking for how compounding worked mechanically; this question is saying that the compounding process seems to result in getting more power out than was put into the system, and wants to know to know where that comes from).
